Had a good experience with Dave's Chimney Service years ago, specifically regarding raccoons in one of our chimneys and capping a chimney. But more recently they took a big deposit from us for a big chimney rebuild project and I much later discovered to my shock they never put us on their schedule to do the work. When I communicated with the owner about it, he was full of excuses and accusations and kept harassing me even after I asked for a refund and made clear I would not do any further business with them. I would not leave them a one-star review, as I did have some good prior experience with them. But my most recent experience eroded my trust and respect for the business and owner to a sufficient degree that I would not do business with them again. read more

Really bad experience, poor quality of work, expensive. I had a new crown. chimney cap, waterproofing, 2 bricks replaced. lead and a video inspection done by Dave's Chimney Service. They originally quoted $5200 and tacked on $500 when I went to sign. Not a good start but I needed the work done. First red flag was the $500 price increase. Second red flag they told me $1500 to $2200 for a chimney liner if I wanted it done in the future. When they gave me the actual quote it was $3500. Third red flag was the $250 charge for the video inspection that I later learned other chimney companies do for free. Forth red flag was the building inspector that came when I had my roof replaced a year later said the lead was not done to code. I had to pay the roofers an other $700 to redo their work. Fifth red flag 2 years later the crown looks like it is falling apart. I don't know what to say other than I think they are eater incompetent or scammers . read more

Lowell, MA 4/22/2019 Brick or Stone Tuck-Pointing Called for crumbling chimney and was given estimate by Juan for grind, repoint and waterproof damaged chimney and flashing along with brochures showing after pictures. First attempt at completing job was nothing like picture, chimney still crumbling and I reported to owner Dave. I requested refund but owner asked for 2nd chance. I advised for legal reason I would allow it. He came out with Juan, inspected work and assured me they would right the wrong. Juan and another worker came out and still my chimney looked nothing like they advertise. I even stood there after claiming they were done pointing out unrepaired cracks. When rinsing off my driveway Juan directed water toward car, backyard and pool instead of street as I asked. My driveway was a mess with mortar stains as well as mortar splatter on the 2 bottom rows of shingles, which I now need to paint. Owner never came out to reinspect work after clearly being taken advantage of 1st time. Said he would send someone out to clean mess and that other worker said I was happy with work. Told him I gave him 2nd chance, did not want them on my property and signed work paper just to get them off my property, as Juan was very confrontational when owner did come to house. Roofing contractor who also inspected 1st round of work repaired flashing and Dave did refund that amount. Very sad and discouraging when contractors take advantage of people this way. Especially when you explain you are unemployed and really do not have money for repairs. UPDATE*** Absolutely horrible experience! Was given pictures of what my chimney would look like after work completed. Not even close. Tried to resolve through BBB. Gave 2nd chance to correct and ended up with damage to house and driveway. Still getting water in basement too. I do not have the time or energy to take them to small claims court and will keep posting reviews until Dave refunds me in full, so I may have my chimney properly repaired. Run from this company as fast as you can. I called to make a chimney cleaning appointment. The guy told me they'd require a camera inspection in addition and would cost $475. A sweep should cost around $200 give or take. These guys are like car salesmen adding on needless stuff. My chimney is less than 12 years old and is in excellent condition. Dave's Chimney will give you the shaft. UPDATE: What a response. After your guy tried selling me a "required" add on, I think my language was milder than it could have been. Please don't hide behind supposed bruised pride. You folks are a rip-off plain and simple. No one should hire you ever. read more

Worst place ever to call for your chimney service. The owner is the rudest person in earth. Run from this company. Would have given negative stars if possible. The outside of our chimney looks horrible and $5,200 were paid for something that looks cheap. Prices are ridiculous. Would have given negative stars if possible! Cleaned chimney for years and always told me that everything was fine when done. This past fall, did a more detailed inspection and told me that level 3 creosote and couldn't clean. No change in wood amount or type burned. Clearly they hadn't been doing the job properly. Crew was obnoxious, tried to blame me. Claimed hadn't been cleaned last year. I produced receipt from them that proved it had. They were not the least bit contrite, but arrogant. Charge a lot for inspection. Office misled me about that. They now claim that fix involves destroying ceramic liner and replacing with stainless. Want $18000 to to that. I have a gas fireplace with a chimney in a two story house. Dave inspected it and told me all was okay and then I videoed him teaching me how to light my fire and to turn it off as I wasn't familiar with the system, I also asked how often I should have him out and instead of shystering me which he could have, he told me not to call unless I was having problems. They looked inside and advised me of what I already knew (fireplace is unsafe and needs extensive repair). Unfortunately, they could not help with my issue as I need interior masonry repair. They looked outside and advised of some masonry work there as well, but told me whoever does the inside, can most definitely assist with the outside. I will say that if they could do it, I would have hired them in a hearbeat! They didn't charge me one cent for the inspection and information. These guys are great! When you are working with people that have integrity, you can tell. This is definitely a company that has integrity. I originally went with a company that gave me a four hour window for arrival. This company gave me a one hour arrival window (11-12), and they actually arrived at right at 11:00. Sometimes schedules don't work as planned no matter what, but Dave called me a couple days prior to ask me if it was okay to move the start time from between 10-11 to 11-12. That is still only a one hour arrival window. No complaints at all. When they arrived, they were very professional and informative. He told me we didn't need to sweep the chimney, but it doesn't have a cap. Also, our damper (120 years old) wasn't working very well. So, I agreed to add a cap and damper. He and his partner were on the roof talking about the work, while I was in the house. I could hear them through the chimney. I knew they didn't think about what they were saying because of a few playful comments they might not have said in front of a customer, but something I also overheard impressed me. The head guy was telling the other guy what he was doing (might have been an apprenticeship). He made comment about doing the job right and making sure the highest work quality is applied. I was impressed by the conversation they didn't know I heard. In the end, if you want a responsive company that doesn't make you wait, then choose these guys. They will drive into Boston to do the job, and they will be fair and honest...and cheaper than the quote I got from the other company I tried. read more

On day of service, he called a couple times to let us know he was running a little late, but he still arrived within the estimated arrival timeframe. I had found Dave's Chimney about 6 years ago and they did an inspection and cleaned my chimney at that time. They had great reviews and did a good job. I needed a partial chimney cap and they found a way to add it while saving me some money. When I needed to get my chimney cleaned again I called them. It took several months to get an appointment but our fireplace was working fine so that wasn't a problem. We were scheduled for 10-1 slot, when they called the day before to confirm, they moved it to 9-12 slot, then called the following morning at 8:15 to say they were on their way. Three men showed up including Dave, they were very careful to keep everything clean and were very polite. What was new was that they used cameras to do detailed inspections throughout. They found "glaze" in my chimney (he showed me this on the camera), and a few minor issues with the mortar and recommended a new chimney liner. They also identified several areas that were not to code, things that had been there for 60 years- since the house was built- and had not caused a single issue. He also said that the same problems were probably in most houses built around that time. He said that he would have to complete ALL of the updates to bring everything up to current code in order to put in the new liner- the estimate was for $16,000- to fix a chimney I had no problems with. He would not just change the liner, because doing so would make him liable if something happened. Also, to maintain the warranty on the $6000 liner, I would need to have inspections every year, regardless of how often I used the fireplace. I brought in a different chimney company for a second opinion. They said my chimney was fine, no work needed at all. He said that if you could see a clear passage up a chimney without restriction, there was no need to put a camera in the chimney. Basically, if you look hard enough to find problems, you're going to find them. He also checked to see that our hot water heater had been changed over to a smaller diameter, which had been done already by our plumber. He did recommend I burn a creosote sweeping log, which I did. I will not be having Dave's team back again. If something hasn't caused a problem in 60 years, chances are it's not going to cause a problem. I don't expect that everything in an older home are going to meet today's building codes. I also can't justify paying $16,000 to fix a chimney. I think the biggest issue is that with the new tech they are finding things that would have been overlooked with the old way they used to do inspections- and maybe many of these things aren't worth addressing if there are no problems to begin with. read more

Dave's came and installed my wood burning insert. The guys were great, kept me informed and laid out what was going to be done. There were some issues with the install. The SS liner took much longer to go in than anticipated but eventually came in. They were finishing up and I had to step out, when I got back, they were finished but the faceplate was 2" off the chimney and with some scratches on the stone hearth. I called back two days later complaining that the install was unsatisfactory, and they knew it was an issue and came back and made things right, they had to chip away some firebrick to get the electrical conduit out of the way. The stove fit in nicely after that. However, the hearth is scratched up very bad. Poor job covering the hearth when sliding the stove in place. They were going to call around and see what they could do about the hearth, but I have not heard back. I'm pretty bummed. Paid good money for the insert and it looks great but my hearth is now scratched up and looks horrible. read more

I called Dave on a Friday around noon because my furnace stopped working and someone recommended him. I told him the situation and that we had two fireplaces that haven't been cleaned in a few years. I have never used his service before, he gave me a quote, and he had two guys over my house to clean one of my fireplaces within two hours. They looked at the other fireplace and said it didn't need a cleaning, and was ready to use- we weren't charged for this. I wish there were more businesses like this around. No other company would come out for free to provide me with an estimate. Repair was finally done and the guys arrived on time and and cleaned up after their work. I called Dave's Chimney Service, LLC to sweep the chimney's flue which I thought was all set until my boiler shut down (a month later) due to a clogged chimney with black soot throughout my living area and carbon monoxide detectors activating. I call them questioning their cleaning of the chimney flue, and they sent two technicians to the evaluate the concern. They determined that the chimney was not clean from the rooftop due to snow on the roof, that was never mentioned to me on day one of the chimney sweep and I was charged the full amount for their shoddy service. They also determined on the second visit that flue was too tight to keep the existing boiler connected to it. I would like to know why they didn't mention this to me on the first visit... now they want $8,950.00 to renovate the entire chimney and I end up losing the original fee as the chimney was never cleaned or evaluated properly. I was scammed on his service. They stated that the only way they will reimburse me is if I approve the overpriced renovation job of $8,950.00. read more

I am very impressed by the work of Dave's Chimney Service. I had work done on a leaking chimney six years ago and hired them to fix it. It had to be done on a cold January day which probably interfered with the adhesion of the materials used. When I noticed a small leak this summer , I called to see if they would look at it, as there was a 10 year guarantee on the work previously done. They immediately took care of it- no charge. I bought a wood stove fireplace insert, and easily dropped a 6 inch stainless steel flexible liner down the chimney. The liner was not aligning up with the wood stove and needed some work. I called Sweepnman in North Reading and they would not use my liner. They quoted over $3,000 to remove perfectly sound 25 year old clay liners, and drop their insulated 6 inch liner with a cleanout box outside to make for easy cleaning. I was hoping for at least a romantic dinner if I'm going to be *******. I called a mason and removed some bricks to help bring the liner into a fireplace. The estimate was $350, which was too good to be true. His brickwork was good but the Mason had no skill with metal insert and 90 degree elbows or any chimney knowledge. I was a dope . The mason crushed the liner and the hookup had poor vent flow , poor drafting. it took me hours to shove a bladder( Mini soccer ball ) up the insert and pump air to push out and reform the crushed areas. Dave's Chimney guys were great. They showed me why the 90 degree elbows weren't working and how by using stainless steel 45 degree elbows the draft would be a nice direct path . I almost was a dope again because I was about to go with a quote to knock out 20-30 bricks and put an outside cleaning box and T up to the wood stove. It would make cleaning the chimney from outside easy. Jerome showed me that the insert could be easily cleaned by opening the fireplace insert door shoving the flexible rod up the insert . So much for Sweepnman's self serving suggestion. Dave's office and crew were very organized and made many courtesy calls to arrange the estimate, and service call. They actually came earlier than predicted. Jerome and Carlos were friendly professional and knowledgeable. They sealed up the fireplace ceiling, wrapped the area with insulation, caulked everything nice and air tight. Well worth the $400.The woodstove drafts great even on the coldest days. read more

The first appt. was suppose to be between 8:30 and 11:00. At 11:30 my husband called and they said they we very busy. OK How about a call. We rescheduled and again no one came or even called us.
