On February 23 I was able to finally get ahold of someone at 5 Star to discuss the leak detection report that was created at their direction (leak detection completed on 2/11). Our pool has a crack and was losing a lot of water daily. Their leak detection company did a temporary repair. I've gone back and forth with someone at their office about the applicability of the warranty and that crack repairs aren't covered. The warranty is clear that crack repairs aren't excluded-- it covers all work done at the pool. Regardless, they said they would send someone out. My pool has been leaking for over 3 months and it needs to be repaired. Today Jose called me to say that they initially warned us that our pool was "failing" and that it had old construction standards. NOTHING WAS COMMUNICATED TO US ABOUT THIS. Why would I elect to pay $16K+ to redo the pool if it was structurally failing? It literally makes zero sense. This company is plain lying and won't even come to look at the crack. At the very least, come see the crack with your own eyes and HONOR YOUR WARRANTY! I've been practically begging Jose for the last month to put us on the schedule to come look at this crack and today when he told me no since our pool is allegedly failing, I asked if I needed to get in contact with an attorney. He then hung up in my ear. The unprofessionalism of this company is actually astounding. Next step will be reporting to the BBB, the Contractor's State Licensing Board, and their insurance (if they have any). Then onto litigation I suppose. read more

We recently purchased a house. The previous owner had used 5 star to resurface the pool shortly before selling it. She contacted them about repairs under warranty and did not get a response. We contacted them, and finally did get a response - they sent out someone to investigate. Then went MIA for a while. Then said repairs were scheduled for the coming week. No one showed up on the dates they gave. When I inquired, another person randomly showed up the next day (without notice) to look at the pool. Finally, after a few weeks and a couple emails to inquire, we were told it's not covered under warranty and they did not have time to do any repairs. So, I should find another company. Needless to say, that is very much our preference at this point. However, I would caution anyone considering working with them. They clearly do not stand behind their work and they are unbelievably poor communicators. read more

Don't look for them. After they take the money. Disappear. There is no service. It Has been looking for a variety of excuses, make up a variety of stories not to construction. Delayed my entire project by almost three years. Many mistakes were made in some of the early work. Like the walls and floor tiles cracked and no one came to repair them. Half of the swimming pool ran away, causing the pool foundation to rise and crack, the use of the wrong plumbing materials led to many problems. I'm suing them now. read more

We scheduled Tony to come out to provide an estimate to update our 30 year old pool. He informed us it would take up to 5 days to receive the estimate. We never received a quote. I called every week for 4 weeks to ask for our estimate. The office told us they would look into it and finally we were told to go ahead and go with someone else because they were too busy. We're experiencing some issues with the pool after 5 Star finished the job.. The pool is leaked, also the stamped concrete is cracked. The cracks on concrete have expanded and are getting worst. They are much wider and longer than before... March 21, 2015... 5 Star came and fixed the leak. Still other issues with concrete and coping around the pool need to be done. We contacted 5 Star's office also leaving message to Concho, but no one contacted us back. Finally after a few emails sending to office, plus text messages to Concho, Concho called us. I was hoping for a 5-star experience, but did not get one from the entire team. A couple days after leaving a message with the office asking for a quote, we were called back by Luis, who set up a time the next day to come by. He showed up on time, did the quote, was quick and efficient; since 5-star had redone our daughter's pool earlier in the year, we felt comfortable going without a second quote. Luis quickly wrote up a schedule of payments, one after the demo, one after the tiling, and one after the re-plastering. The first two payments were the bulk of the cost, with a small $1500 payment for the third (crucial) step. He estimated that it would take a week for the job since end of August was somewhat slow as people generally like access to their pool in the summer; but we figured we could easily go a week (of course this was before the 100 degree weather that came a week or two later ;-) The demo step was done on a Saturday, after getting the quote the day before. The re-tiling step happened early the following week. Both steps were done well and we were looking forward to the plastering. At this point, however, there was a 4-week delay. The short take: lots of promises, no-shows, no-call backs from messages left with the office and Luis; finally, 4 weeks after the tiling, when we were about to write this off and start looking for another company to finish the work, we tried again and were told they had scheduled a team to come out the next day, Tuesday. No one showed up. However, Wednesday morning at 7am a team arrived, and over the next two days completed the work. The plastering with a pebble surface looks great. So I'd give 4 or 5 stars to the teams that did the work, but no stars to the front office. They were pleasant enough to talk with, when you could get hold of them, but they need some training in customer communication. If they had been straightforward, and let us know there was going to be a several weeks' delay, or even let us know week-to-week the outlook on getting the job done, or even promptly returned our calls, it would have been fine. My advice: when you sign with this outfit, make sure final payment is half the bill, so even if they don't communicate, you will have some assurance that you will see them again! read more

An update on 5 Star Pool - We are still experiencing problems with our mastic splitting and peeling off. (6-19-14). I can't even get 5 Star to return my calls. I called the manufacturer of the caulk and they suggested that it was not applied properly. I just finished filling out a Better Business Bureau complaint request. We'll see how that goes. If that goes nowhere then I suppose I'll have to get another pool repair company to re install the mastic at an added expense. ********************* An update (8-28-14) - 5-Star came out and removed the old mastic and replaced it with a concrete caulk. Was looking to get a quote for a very large pool remodel. These guys' sales process leaves me wondering if they can't handle scheduling sales appointments, how can anyone have confidence that they will complete a job on schedule? Their sales guy called me and we talked on the phone. He said he'd call me back the next day to give me an answer on something that he had to ask his manager about.... Almost a week later, I finally get a call back, but from someone else named "Louise". He sets up a time with me to come by my place between 8:30 and 9:30 on a Saturday. OK.. Early, but I'm OK with that. So I sit around all morning long waiting for this guy to show up, only to finally find his card tucked into my front door. So apparently, he came by.. Knocked on the door.. Didn't get an immediate answer (I was probably out back or upstairs), so he decides to just leave. No phone call, no text, nothing. Wasted my entire morning sitting around for this guy. I don't know how their work is, because I didn't bother to waste anymore time on them. 5Star re-plastered and replaced the tiles for our pool. It was a much need upgrade and initially looked really good. Once they left I noticed a streak on the side wall. The didn't properly shutoff the water during plastering, so the water was dripping out of it while the plaster was curing and the pool was filling This caused a permanent streak (see pic). After completing the pool start up I noticed one of the two water return lines at the bottom of the pool had no flow. I called and was told they would speak to the owner/manger and get us on the schedule. No one ever showed. No return called. Called them again and they said they would check and get back to me. No on called. I tried calling them several more times with no answer. I decided to try and clean out the return line myself and found a they didn't remove the packing they put in it to prevent debris from entering (see pic) I would give them zero stars if I could. This is by far the worse pool company in the Tri-Valley both in customer service and workmanship. They caused a leak at my pool light and installed a water feature incorrectly. They left the project without correcting the problems. The state license board is aware of several complaints. It took them over 3 months to re-plaster my pool. They are quick to ask for payment once they finally got around to doing work. Luz in the office is rude and unprofessional and the owner "Concho" never met with me or tried to make it right. The WORST customer service ever....run don't walk away from 5 star pool plaster. 5 star cashed my checks in April and I have called every day since to have 5 star complete my re-plastering job. It took them a month after cashing my checks to finally plaster the pool. Not only did they leave a mess (empty water/Gatorade bottles and plaster all over the deck), but they didn't install the light or skimmer door to finish the job. To make matters worse, they broke the electrical sheathing in the pool house costing me even more money to fix their negligence. The office staff says that they are going to call back...but don't call. When I happen to get someone on the phone, they say that they are going to come out tomorrow and no one shows. Sometimes, someone from 5 star actually shows up but they leave saying that they can't do the work because they don't have the right skill set or are by themselves and need another person to complete the job. This ridiculous process has gone on since April. We just had our 20 year old pool redone by 5 star and they did a fantastic job. I had found them randomly on Google and got a bid. They demoed and then did Pebble plaster and rock coping and a rock waterfall facing. Completed start to finish in 4 days. The owner Concho was on site daily to make sure the job was on task and if any issues with us. Also they came by 3 times after the build was complete to clean , power wash and make minor repairs. In addition to great pricing, this company blew us away on their customer service and pride in workmanship. My wife and I decided to go with this company because they had favorable reviews and little issues as it seemed. All started out well until we got close to the end of the job. They have turned into a nightmare to deal with. Pool has been nothing but problems since they totally redid it. Did not notify me of needing permits nor did they pull any permits. Have had pool leaks since 24 hours after pool was filled and still do after 45+ days. In the middle of a drought and they don't think this is an issue. Told me they were not going to put up the child fence barrier because it was not part of the contract even though verbally I asked and was reassured it would be. I informed them about CA contractor law that they cannot work on something within code and then leave it out of code. Needless to say they hired someone competent to do the work. They replaced our entire deck, but took a shortcut and did not replace the skimmers and that has resulted in all the leaking. At least one of them is now sinking and one of tiles inside the skimmer has broken under the pressure. They did not care about the leak nor follow up on my repeated contacts so I had to hire a leak company to find them. Coping stone on top is separating form others as well. They also built a beautiful waterfall, but placed the large anchor rocks on the dirt and not an a foundation at all and they have settled creating cracks. They also never bothered to seal the waterfall to begin with and it has leaked since day one so we have been unable to use it. They also severed one of our irrigation lines during the deck building and brought heavy equipment into our yard without informing us and destroyed 400 sq feet of grass. To bring in the equipment they tore out a section of my fence too and then just dropped it in the ground without a concrete footing that was there to begin with. They claim to be pool experts but did not even realize there was an equalization port for the skimmer in the pool which was a hazard for my kids since it is suction. I have had to fight them every step of the way to get anything resolved. They seem to think fixing incompetent/illegal work is warranty work. I wish I had a review like this to read before we thought about using them because we would not have. I hope I can save someone else the hassle we are living through. In December 2015 I was awarded their entire bond of $12,500 due to the lack of quality work. The CSLB found several decificiencies in their work as well and noted other possible code violations. According to the Contra Costa County Permits Department a plot of all work was to submitted for the work to be performed and permits would have been issued against the work noted. However since no plot was done and no permit was pulled, I as the homeowner am now responsible for these issues. If you look them up on CSLB website you will see they changed their Bond Insurance Carrier at the turn of the year. They took bond insurance policy out with another company while they paid off the other bond they owed to the first company. This allowed them to keep their license. I find it a bit appalling that a company with these types of issues can continue to work with a clean license with no notation showing on CSLB. It is clear the CSLB is about keeping contractors working and not protecting consumers. I will eventually see them in court. read more

I have been slow to post a review because we had a fairly big project that required both months of time and follow up. I was very impressed with 5 star's ability to quote and start work last October. We already had a pool by another builder with a recognizable name in the area, installed 15 years ago. At the time, the other builder was a nightmare to deal with, had multiple delays and never gave us the pool we believed we contracted. So, I was really cautious and ready for disappointment when we interviewed multiple pool companies to remodel the mess of a pool we already owned. We selected 5 star because we felt their price was fair (not cheapest) and they seemed to have a great idea of how to build a pool, fire pit and patio that as proposed, exceeded our expectations. Then, they did just that: exceeded our expectations....every day!. They had a project manager who owned their work and addressed all our concerns as they occurred. We asked a lot of questions, including nights returning home from work after the crew was gone, that generated urgent calls to understand things like "where did our irrigation go?" and "why did you take away so much dirt?" The crews were friendly and professional. We always had our questions answered within the day. And, I loved that they would explain their work and clearly took pride in what they did. We had all the usual issues with unexpected surprises, like a wall that would have been out of proportion and drainage to be dealt with, and weather that refused to cooperate. This was famliar territory from our past pool experience. But this is where 5 star really made a difference. Rather than blame all the unknown surprises, they explained what the new information would mean to our project and then gave us options to resolve. As an example, we were delayed in getting the fill between brick pavers because the silicone grout was reacting to ground moisture so they said, we will be back in 10 weeks when the ground is dry. And they showed up, even though they had been paid in full. And, they relaid a bit of the patio that they didn't think looked right! Really, they did the right thing even though they had already been paid. Beat that! Not possible!!! And, they were actually apologetic that the weather had delayed finishing. We love our new pool and we have used it more in the past few months than all of the last 15 years of the old pool. People rave about the design, which I really have to credit to 5 Star. We had our pool completed in Dec. 2013 and we were thrilled, and singing five star praises, it was beautiful. Since then the tile in the spa has started falling off. We have been calling them since April 2015 and NO ONE will return our call. On our last call (early Aug 2015)we were assured we would get a call back the same day.....still no call back. I am going to go through the better business bureau and have reached out to an attorney. The lesson learned, a warranty is only as good as the company backing it. Looking to build a pool??? Quality of the work was pretty good for a BBQ island we got done, but communication was absolutely terrible with their sales person. They were chasing down payment when the job was not complete, the last day they were here left the final BBQ island and area including garden full of masonry dust, rubble all over our garden, ruined all of our chair covers and it seems they did not seal the tavertine which stained right away on first use.
