Pooh and I came here for supper. We wanted some place quiet and this fit the bill. It's off of Fifth Avenue and surrounded by trees. We ordered a bottle of red wine since we're eating steak. The wine was robust I ordered the T-bone steak and Pooh ordered the Fillet Mignon. Both of us asked for medium rare but both were more rare than medium. Still the steak melted in my mouth. Our server, Damian was great. He brought out a tray with the different cuts of steaks to show us what each looked like (see photo). He did the same for the desserts (see photo) I ordered the Lime Charlotte and Pooh chocolate mousse. I had no idea what a Charlotte was but it was amazing. It was like a key lime pie without the crust but layers of cake with chunks of lime curd throughout-sublime truly Pooh loved his mousse. Had an amazing dinner here. Set off 5th Ave in a nice courtyard. They brought us out a brochetta app as we waited. We ordered the Barrata app and it was fresh and great. I ordered the ribeye steak with the Alfredo pasta. The steak was cooked perfectly and the Alfredo was very creamy and rich. My wife had the malinaesa and the chicken had the perfect crunch to the outside and tender on the inside. The flavored were also great and it was served over angle hair pasta. Our dinner did not match the picture! All three of us ordered the filet special, and the glass of wine that accompanied it was the best part. Unfortunately, the waiter was rude and dismissed our complaints about our meals. I ordered my steak medium-rare, but it was cooked to medium. Sadly, my potatoes and vegetables were undercooked--cold, white, and completely raw. My husband and son ordered their steaks medium, yet theirs came out still mooing, and their side dishes were also raw and cold. Though their steaks were sent back for additional cooking, nothing was done about the side dishes. When my steak was returned, it was overcooked, even though I had specifically requested that it not be touched again. The potatoes and veggies remained unchanged. I ended up sending my plate back, having barely eaten anything, yet we were still charged full price for all three filets. As a poor compensation, they offered us plates of oily potatoes and vegetables that were still undercooked. Have you ever bitten into a raw potato at a dinner where you paid good money? It was quite unpleasant! The waiter was not only rude but almost abusive, showing no signs of apology at all. So we didn't order a steak at this steakhouse...because we saw how well they were preparing their seafood! The Seafood Scampi, Mussels, and Calamari were all excellent (and yes, we did overeat here). The scampi was excellent, nicely seasoned with large and perfectly cooked seafood! The Mussels were my favorite here-the broth was perfect for toast dipping! The appetizer of Fried Calamari was nicely done, not too rubbery and a nice accompanying dipping marinara sauce. Great service, cozy/romantic spot in the courtyard off of 5th Av. The only negative was the gringo electric guitarist musician in front of the restaurant that was so loud that it deterred from our meal. Luckily he left after no one tipped him so another good musician stepped in. Came here specifically to taste their meat. While they do offer some well-prepared steaks, they are seemingly still constrained by the beef quality in Playa. When the maître de came to present us the raw steaks (a custom at this spot) they were clearly paler and less marbled than what we look for back home. That said, the ribeye was well-executed. Though it didn't have as much intra-muscular fat as I'd like, the fat it did have was flavorful and well-rendered. They cooked my steak exactly as I ordered it (Medium). It was indeed tender on the bite. So I think this is a good kitchen and restaurant. Unfortunately, the level of beef is naturally constrained by the paucity of local fresh beef slaughterhouses in the region. read more

Kudos and enormous thanks to Giusey and Mauricio at 500 Gramos Grill for providing a beautiful atmosphere full of warmth and shelter from the rain, flawlessly prepared, presented and served delicious meals, excellent service and keeping our drinks full, and surprising us with a delicious desert. It was a love fest, full of amazement and warmth with an incredible group . It was a grim, rainy night before arriving at 500 Gramos Grill where we were welcomed with a beautiful setting and candlelight dinner. Although admin, Amanda Tucker, and the PB official photographer , had requested that I not post my "Poor quality and blurry pics" I still must share my blurred vision of the event. As any Biter knows, we have a fondness of starting our events with drinks, followed by my favorite bruschetta, which was a huge hit. Some Biters commented that it was so extraordinary that some never liked bruschetta before or even tomatoes! Entrees consisted of a delicious pork rib special with grilled veggies and potatoes, the best steaks in Playa, vegetarian pasta, and do much more. We got the filet, the ribeye, the shrimp scampi pasta to share. The steaks were SO tender! Really amazing. Great flavors and well-seasoned. The shrimp scampi pasta was a standout - GIANT shrimp on the plate, savory white wine-garlic-parsley sauce and al dente pasta. We saw a seafood pasta on another table that had tons of mussels, crabs, etc. No skimping here. We are always happy when a steakhouse does other food well and we'd happily come back for pasta alone. I was wanting a steak and no more nachos or tacos, so I looked up a good spot and found this gem. It's behind a sign that is for a store. First of all the staff was so accommodating. I even met the chef and owner. I got some bruschetta and it was amazing. Perfectly blended and the bread was very tasty. It had a nice crunch to it, which I love. My drinks were blended very well as well. They made everything as I requested. My drink was stiff and my water was kept full. The steak was so delicious. Not chewy or overdone. The worst dinner on my 8 day trip to Cancun and PDC. Wow - usually Yelp reviews are reliable, but not this one. Started with my cocktail - asked for a gin martini and out came a G&T. Considering I ordered in English, understandable although I specifically asked for no vermouth. Salads next - my Caesar had thinly fried onions on top that completely overwhelmed the flavor profile. My gal ordered the house salad - it had pecans and Kalamata olives with a sweet dressing and odd flavor. Maybe the kitchen is looking for balance? Now to the steaks - we both ordered filets which tasted like poor quality meat, lacked flavor and had whole red peppercorns on top. Vegetables were undercooked and onions dominated the flavor. The potatoes were undercooked and flavorless. We sent both entrees back. The management offered free desert and a shot of tequila - I said no, I paid for my drinks and crappy salad and got them to remove the entrees but had to negotiate it. Avoid at all costs. read more

While staying at the Paradisus, we were told about Sal Steak Cave. With so-so reviews -- we were huge fans of Passion -- and prices for a tomahawk steak around $150 (same as NYC) we passed. Locals recommended 500 Gramos and we were thankful they did. Prosciutto plate is a great starter for a group of 4. We also splurged for the large bone-in cowboy ribeye with a side of shrimp scampi. Holy cow that's a ton of food for less than one- third the price of the Sal tomahawk. Dessert.... to not order the tiramisu and chocolate mouse, well you might as well just not eat. Two of the most exceptional deserts we ever had and both made on premises. Friendly staff, many from the US. The casual outdoor atmosphere along with the saxophonist next door made for an amazing sunset. We'll be sure to visit next time we're in town. Thank you! read more

I really wanna give this place a 3.5 star, arg! If only that was an option. My friends and I stumbled upon this place, I enjoyed that it was in a more quiet area on 5th Avenue. The bruschetta is a provided appetizer on the house, good. Our food was also good, we got the seafood pasta, vegetable pasta with shrimp added, and the cream pasta. The pastas were good but not the best we've ever had. We also got the T-bone steak to share..... that is where we went wrong. It was so hard to cut through and chew. It was pretty disappointing honestly. Our drinks were pretty good as well and the decor was nice! The service was good. The owner who is from Ohio is very personable; he greets each of his guests and ensures the highest level of customer service. His staff are very professional, very polite and overall extremely welcoming. The food is simply amazing!! My steak was cooked to perfection and the presentation was beautiful. I've been to other well known restaurants around Mexico and paid way more than what I received. At 500 Gramos it's quite the opposite you get way more than what you'll pay.. We stayed very close to 5th Avenue In Playa Del Carmen and wanted to have a special dinner to celebrate our anniversary! We called ahead to book a reservation but ended up going 1 hour earlier which wasn't a problem at all because they sat us right away. Everyone was extremely friendly. The service and atmosphere alone is 10/10 and the food was EFFIN amazing. Less than $80 for a Hal's dinner is a good bang for your buck. The cocktails were amazing as well. This place was great! Reviews are accurate. If you need a break from Mexican cuisine, this place is very nice: Italian influence (burrata is so refreshing, and solid pasta - cooked correctly "al dente") and steaks (very good and also properly cooked steaks - I mention this as so many places in PDC mess steaks up). Did I mention the desserts? They will make you feel happy. We liked the place so much that we went there twice (second time for the birthday of one of the kids) - it's the only place we visited twice during our 2 weeks stay in PDC (given the selection of places in this area, it's easy to try things out). Not only that but the staff works very hard to ensure that things are sailing smoothly, showing patience and interest for guests (which in our case was challenging as the second time around, we had a larger group ~14 people and they made things work for us without a problem). read more

I went here in December 2020, mid height of the pandemic. First, yes, they are 100% complying with the states safety standards. All outdoor seating, everyone is wearing a mask, and all of the tables are appropriately spaced apart. I would say I felt safer eating here than even in the U.S. Second, the food. Oh. My. God. I am a steak connoisseur. I have visited high end steak houses all across the United States and Canada, and I can confirm, the quality of the steaks here rival the best. You ask for medium rare? You get medium rare. It's juicy, flavored perfectly, and served alongside vegetables and potatoes equally flavored well. The wine pairings are perfection, the deserts plentiful, and the appetizers are the highest quality. As a true foodie this place spoke to my heart. Also, finish your meal with one of their cappuccinos for the smoothest, creamiest after dinner coffee you've ever had. Third, the service. It was perfection start to finish. I could not have asked for better service. Oscar was a delight and personable, the owner fabulous as ever. And finally, the cost. Absolutely 100% worth it.
