This was a nice find on 5th Avenue. We walked past it on our way down the street, but stopped by on our back. The seating on the 2nd floor overlooking the shopping area is the best for people watching. We started with table side guacamole and it was good. We asked the preparer to add a little more spice to heat it up and it was added flavor. The main meals were very good and the menu has many options. My wife ordered a mango margarita and it was great. We enjoyed our lunch here and we will be back on our next visit to Playa Del Carmen. read more

On our last night in Playa del Carmen last week, Daniel picked this spot for dinner and I am so happy he did. The location is fabulous. it is on the main strip on 5th Ave but on the second floor overlooking the hustle and bustle below. You get a great view with a romantic, peaceful atmosphere. The décor has a tropical vibe with lots of plants. The hostess, server and manager were all super nice and helped us choose the best items on the diverse menu. We started with some ceviche and stuffed jalapenos. Both were delicious. I order a glass of Malbec from Argentina- happy they had a decent wine selection as many places in Mexico only have good beer or tequila. For my entrée, I had bacon wrapped tiger shrimp on a bed of mashed potatoes. Yum!! Daniel had a lobster pasta dish and it was quite good too though I think we both preferred mine. The price was very reasonable - for 2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine it was $77 USD before tip. It would be nearly impossible to have that much for that price at a fine dining place here. The wife and I came here while on a mini vacation and we were not disappointed at all. How could you lose with the wide open restaurant area overlooking the downtown Playa Del Carmen shopping district where on one side has some Mexican music playing with accordions and guitars and the other sides showing some Old Navy action. The warm breeze and music playing made a great atmosphere. As for the restaurant, outside of the beautiful scenery, was a plethora of authentic options from steak to seafood and is a definite change from all of the burritos and churros that you find elsewhere but it was a very nice change and the quality was impeccable. I had the salmon egg rolls that were crispy and delicious and decadent at the same time with a great crunch and a smoky flavor with the dipping sauce. The wife started with a bisque that was smoky in flavor and they called it tortilla soup and she loved every minute of it (she said key is to throw all the fixins in the pool) Then we both had the flank steak that came on a giant cutting board with some fingerling type potatoes and small pile of veggies but the steak was perfectly cooked and was tender and the flavor was divine! I had the margarita and they made a non alcoholic strawberry one for the wife that she loved. For dessert we had the cheesecake with coffee to top off a perfect evening with GREAT service and attentive staff to be there for our every whim. When we come back, we will be here ... it really made our stay that much more memorable. read more

I really want to give this place 5 stars, but I just can't do it! Madre Tierra is a great place with an open air dining room on the second floor. The food was delicious except for the steak for us. :( The staff was absolutely wonderful and super polite.They were very attentive without being overbearing, and this was easily the best service we had for food (which means I am excluding bars). They are a seafood and steak grill, and for our fancy meal of the trip, we decided to come here after having tacos for many days and many many meals. I opted for the Surf & Turf, which is a soft beef fillet with pepper sauce and lobster tail. The lobster was delicious, but they were kind of small. I felt like they would not be legal size in the states, but I'm not sure of the rules for Mexico. I would definitely get the lobster again though. The steak on the other hand, was just as described on the menu: beef fillet. I'm not sure what cut of meat it was, but it was not quite as good as I expected. I was expecting a nice juicy cut of meat, but it was not juicy, and it really detracted from the experience. Others in my party agreed that their steaks were just meh as well. Should you come here for a meal though, for goodness sake, get the Caesar salad. The dressing is made tableside, and their party trick is cracking the egg with a spoon and fork. It's really neat, and I have been practicing at home. They serve the dressing over a few leaves of romaine lettuce, and you can choose if you want anchovies or not. I would definitely go back here with a hope that the steak is better. Everything else was spectacular. read more

Walk by this restaurant randomly. The staff was friendly and attentive. The service is was good. Got our drinks right away and food right after that. They made the guacamole right in front of us. That was a good touch on presentation. We order tocos shrimp and beef steak with shrimp. The shrimp taco was good but the beef smelled and taste not fresh. It seems like it was out for a long time before cooking that's why it had after taste and smell. When we ask the server if its actually beef the manager confirmed that it was but we just told him our feedback. After that we didn't feel like continuing to eat got our check and left. Located on the tourist rich section of 5th Ave, Madre Tierra is a solid choice on it's own for typical steakhouse fare. But when you couple it with the outstanding service from Maria our server (she's amazing, speaks several languages and we watched her flawlessly switch from English at our table to French at the next and Spanish to her fellow workers) and Leila at the bar (ask her for a wine suggestion, she is spot on!), it bumps that solid experience up a star as the staff here really makes this place a place to return to! We stopped in a couple of times on our recent trip to Playa. The first time was for a "wine break", (you definitely need those as you walk along the shopping center). We were quickly shown to seats at the bar and began to talk wine with Leila. She came up with several local suggestions and all were quite good! One in our group ordered a "zombie" drink, aptly named as it has several different kinds of alcohol in it and know that they limit you to three for a reason! When we returned for dinner, we were quickly shown to a table in the non smoking section and Maria was great at sharing some of her favorites on the menu and making adjustments for some dietary issues in our group. While they have several kinds of steak on the menu, we really couldn't see much difference between the rib eye and the sirloin in terms of size or thickness. But the steaks were flavorful and come with a few small potatoes and grilled onions. Also- be sure to check the doneness of your steak as while mine was perfect, two in the group had to send their's back for a little more cooking. But the surf and turf with lobster was quite good. And don't forget to leave room for dessert. The strawberries flambe prepared table side was delicious as was the brownie with ice cream. So the next time you are walking down 5th Ave, look up. Or you might miss this spot on the 2nd level and the wonderful service and wine that are within! And the food isn't bad either! read more

- ordered the surf and turf w/ a side of grilled seasonal vegetables (came with a side of al dente pasta) - the sides are all $3 US each, a steal compared to other restaurants in the area, - I had wanted to compare warm water lobster to cold water lobster for a while so this gave me that opportunity, unfortunately my lobster was overcooked, so I feel like I'll have to try spiny lobster again under different circumstances (as it stands, Maine lobster FTW!) - very strange that they don't list sides with any of their entrees despite them all coming with one - the pasta mixed with one of the accompanying sauces (garlic infused olive oil) was absolutely amazing (I'd get the surf n turf again just for that) - steak was done well, soft and flavorful - though probably a health violation in NY, I absolutely adored their resident cat who I was told was "the boss" of the restaurant read more

I just ate there with my husband. The service is good, guacamole was made in front of us. We got rib-eye and filet mignon. The first one had like 30% of fat and both come with a side of vegetables. The overall quality of the food doesn't worth the money we pay for it. For the type of restaurant, the food should be better. Dry meat. I give credit only because they were able to accommodate a large group (19 people) for dinner on a Saturday night. The majority of us ordered the steak and lobster. My plate came out how I ordered (steak medium rare ) & tasted decent after drenching it in the chimichurri sauce. My friend ordered her steak medium rare as well, but came out well done & dry, so she kindly asked if she could get another steak in the way she ordered. The waiter apologized and took the plate back. Her second steak came out pretty quickly, we cut into the middle to see if it was cooked.. This time they hadn't cooked it enough where the steak was almost ice cold!! She returned the entire dish. The worst part was that they still included my friends dish on the bill. We asked to have it taken away since she didn't eat it & they did take it off. BUT I've been to many restaurants with great service and they always offer to take an item off the bill if a customer was not satisfied. I really enjoyed this place on all levels: food, service and ambience/decor. It's rare you get a place anywhere that can/will do a traditional table-side caesar salad, and it was very solid. The table-side guacamole was also very good. All of our dishes (steak, shrimp, pasta) were certainly B+/A- and the prices more than fair. The service was exceptional (Maria, from Columbia, and several other supporting staff). Friendly, easy, attentive and professional. The stylish treehouse decor overlooking 5th was beautiful and made my wife and I not want to leave if it weren't for our teenage daughter haranguing me to get her a cheap henna tattoo (I'm fairly certain those are from India and not Mexico, honey...). The restaurant is located on the second floor just above 5th Avenue, which is nice because you aren't right in the thick of all the craziness of the street but you can still watch all the excitement down below. I had a surf and turf combo with New York Steak and Lobster. Steak was really good. The lobster was a little over cooked but still good. It came with a side of sautéed vegetables which was also very good. My wife had the Picanha and said it was really good as well. Best ceviche de pescado I have ever eaten and the tacos were also great. It's on the corner directly opposite the yellow Hacienda Tequila. The ambiance is great and the combination of the high ceilings and the fans keep it cool even on a blazingly hot day like the one we chose to visit. The look of the place is nice; cute decor and friendly staff. However, the speed of service was awful and the food itself made us angry for consuming the calories. I swear the tortilla soup was canned campbell's tomato soup and the mussels tasted old/previously frozen. Don't even get me started on the breaded cheese appetizer. The table-side guacamole was flavorful and well done, and the salad had a nice dressing, but those are the only nice things I can say about the food. There is so much delicious food in Playa -- I would say do not waste your time here if the taste of what you're eating is important to you. read more

This was one of the best meals we had here. My husband and I both had the Seafood combination with grilled fish, shrimp, octopus and squid cooked "ajillo" style. It was so fresh and cooked to perfection. Another guest had the lobster tacos and loved them as well. They have a children's menu as well and my kids enjoyed the chicken tenders and fries. The food was really good food. The steaks and lobsters were cooked perfectly. The grouper was delicious as was the tequila shrimp. Very nice ambiance impeccable service, and the prices are fair. This is not an authentic Mexican seafood restaurant, more of an American steak and seafood place. Very nice place to relax and have a great meal. read more
