I saw that a lot of the reviews here were unimpressed and a little disappointed, but I decided to give 59 Almshouse a try anyway. I'm glad I did, because now I know never to go back there again to dine. The place is renovated and decorated well. The prices are expensive for what you get, but they're not that expensive. Ordering a side of something is $7, appetizers are generally $10+, meals are $20+. Our meal for 2 people (2 apps, 2 meals) ran us $80 with tax. The food, however, was not that good to justify it. We got the grilled wings and shrimp macaroni and cheese for apps. The wings were the best thing we ate, and honestly, they were some of the best wings I had. They were crispy, juicy, and a little spicy. The macaroni was not for me. The cheese sauce was very runny. I know some people like really runny cheese sauce, so if you do, that's your dish. The shrimp and noodles were average. Our meals were the roast chicken and crab cakes. The chicken itself was amazing. It was juicy, skin was crispy, and it was plated beautifully. The mashed potatoes it came with, however, felt like glue in my mouth/throat. It's a shame since the potatoes tasted good. The crab cakes were the biggest disappointment and why my review is 2 instead of 3 stars. They were served beautifully, as were all the other dishes, but the crab cakes were mushy on the inside-- no nice chunks of crab, too much breading. Not worth the $26 at all. For that, I expect something that tastes at least a little better than frozen crab cakes I can buy at the grocery store. In addition, our waitress did not impress us. Of course, amazing service is not expected, but it is worth noting that even the service is nothing but unremarkable. To conclude: the chicken here was outstanding, and it almost makes me want to come back. The crab cakes and other sides ensure that I stay away. However, we did not try their sandwiches/flatbreads, which I hear are excellent. It is quite possible they are excellent despite my experience, considering how great the chicken was. read more

My wife and I had dinner here and we were thoroughly impressed. Despite the wait (due to being new), the service was superb. Our waiter was very attentive to our needs and was very knowledgeable about the menu. He offered much insight into his menu favorites and what to pair together. We started with the Bacon Sampler and a bowl of the Homemade Chicken Soup, both of which were out of this world. If you like bacon on your bacon, the bacon sampler appetizer is for you! For our main course, we had the Almshouse Burger (Burger, BBQ Sauce, Pork Belly, and a Fried Egg) done medium rare and a regular Cheeseburger done medium. Both burgers came out perfectly cooked and were outstandingly delicious. The burgers were two of the best burgers we have eaten. We skipped dessert this time, but we definitely won't the next time we visit! We highly recommend this place. read more

I ate here for lunch with a friend recently on a weekday. The restaurant was not very crowded and we ordered 2 salads for lunch - the service was terrible! We waited about 30 mins for the salads to come out - we asked our waitress about the delay & she kept saying they'd be out shortly. They finally came & they were mediocre at best. The only nice thing I can say is I liked the decor of the restaurant but I won't be back due to the slow service I received while the restaurant wasn't even crowded! read more

The food here has always been great. I've been there a few times for lunch with my husband and my kids and always enjoyed of good service and delicious food. But the last time we visited we had a unpleasant experience with the waitress. She was a little rude and unsympathetic. For that reason I won't be back. Each of us were pleased with our dishes, the sticky rice bowl was delicious and the short ribs fell off of the bone. The skillet cookie for desert was a perfect ending to a really good meal. Three of us went at 5 on Friday. Half price drinks and appetizers. The beer selection is great and the hamburger sliders the best i ever had. Pricey at $12 for three sliders but at $6 at happy hour a bargain. Service was very good and the restaurant was busy but not crowded. The menu has some very interesting choices. Wife had a sweet potato burger which she enjoyed, i had a short rib grilled cheese that was very good but a little salty, and son had a barbecue chicken flatbread he really liked. Unfortunately no one had room for dessert, but the dessert menu looked great. Thats ok, we'll be back for dessert, this place is definitely worth another visit. It's always tough to give a brand new place a fair rating, so I like to go twice before I do, figuring newer places will always have issues. That said, I was pleasantly surprised to see that wasn't really the case here. First, I went with some co-workers for happy hour last Friday and had drinks and apps at the bar. Nice beer selection and the Rock Shrimp Mac-n-Cheese and Wagyu Sliders were both on point. The bartenders got a little backed up in the middle of it, but that's the closest I can come to a complaint. Went back last night for dinner with my wife. I love weeknights out because we were able to walk in at 7:30 and get a table right away. This time I had the Dry-Aged Ribeye, and my wife had the Free Range Chicken. The Ribeye was ridiculous...literally the best steak I've ever had, and I've eaten at some of the best steakhouses in the country. Wife said she loved the chicken too, and she must have, because she wouldn't even let me try it. We'll be back soon, and will definitely be in frequently for happy hour. read more

After discovering what Foie Gras is. I will not eat at your restaurant or recommend to anyone. The production of this fatty duck liver is one of the worst I've seen. I advise everyone who doesn't know what it is just Google Hudson Valley foie gras. Shame on your restaurant for serving this. If you do take it off the menu I would give your place another try. My first time there. Excellent food this evening but had the unfortunate experience of sitting at a long high top table next to the bar. Not only were we on the end next to the main "runway" for waiters and seating, but the noise level was painful. We should have asked to move. I visited last night and there were hardly any open seats at the bar, which is fine, it was busy at the time... Then I noticed a few teenagers sitting at the bar! Whether or not they were drinking, I have no idea. I did see them eating food. But either way, I would never want to sit at a bar with teenagers. That's what tables in the restaurant (or even the bar area) are for! The bartender didn't say a word to them and took their order as if it's normal practice. Very disappointed. We've been here before and have enjoyed it. Last night was an off night. Service was poor. I had to ask the hostess if anyone was waiting on us. Once we got someone's attention, service was slow. They got both my and my wife's orders wrong. They handled my mistake well by bringing a new dish. Been twice now for lunch. Decor very nice. Waitstaff very nice but service can be slow for no apparent reason. The menu is comprehensive and includes brunch on Sunday but I have yet to find a dish that is something I would rave about. Not bad tasting but unusually seasoned However the portions are generous. My biggest complaint is with one of the bar staff who gave me big attitude when I asked that my beer be properly filled. We stopped here not knowing what to expect and it was delicious! The whole staff was great, the food was amazing and the ambiance was perfect. The bar area was very cozy and there was also a dinning room for a more intimate experience. We had crab cakes, halibut and tuna steak all cooked to perfection! For dessert I recommend the hot chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream (from Tanner Bros) and Nutella drizzle, so good. I will definitely be back soon and am excited for the outdoor bar when the weather gets warmer. Try making a reservation on a Friday or Saturday because it gets crowded. My fiance went there just last night, since we are getting married up the street at Northampton Valley Country Club and are considering the restaurant for our rehearsal dinner. Needless to say, we're DEFINITELY booking it! The place was busy for a Wednesday night (that's how you know you're at a good spot), and even so, we were seated outside (lots of entertainment out on the road) with a less than 5 minute wait. Our server gave us waters, we ordered drinks and placed our food order - the calamari appetizer to share, I got the sweet potato burger, and my other half got the fish tacos. The calamari was tasty - it came on a bed of greens that you could honestly just pour their calamari thai-chili sauce over and eat as a salad! When the main entrees come out, we were shocked at how generous the portions were! My fiance's fish tacos had great cuts of fish and were piled high with all the delicious taco toppings. His tortilla chips were nice and crunchy, and they came with a side of black beans and salsa. He said that the fish tacos were some of the best ones he's had since he was in the Florida Keys on vacation! This is a big compliment! I took a risk with the sweet potato burger because I didn't really know what I was getting into and was intrigued...and it was AMAZING! A really different but delicious sandwich! I subbed a Caesar salad for the chips, and even that was on point. But back to the burger - it was HUGE. Half an avocado, the sweet potato burger, onion straws, and the big ol' buns! The maple mayo was a really nice touch, too! Overall, superb. The ambiance inside was lovely, and we can't wait to go back for dinner as well as host our rehearsal dinner there! The worse management I've ever witnessed. I had an open table reservation and had to wait 30 minutes for our table. The hostess and the manager walk around confused and have no clue what they're doing. The food is mediocre at that. I've been there twice and ordered the same meal and they tasted completely different both times. There is no consistency and I believe that has to do with management. Recently went there for dinner and was not impressed whatsoever. We were told it would be a 45 minute wait and it ended up being over 90 minutes before we sat down. Finally when it was time for our table to be ready the hostesses got our party number wrong and had to run around to get a table for the correct number. During the 90 minute wait we watched several tables sit empty for extended periods of time. The food was pretty good (hush puppies, grilled wings), but nothing amazing to overcome the underwhelming start to the night. One suggestion - get rid of the mandatory valet parking. The parking lot is, at most, 30-40 yards long and 30 yards wide. We don't need someone to park our car and get it for us, especially when they've gotten the wrong car. Overall, not impressed after the extensive wait (signs say open by Spring 2015, but doesn't open until October). Will continue to pick other options in Newtown, New Hope, and Doylestown. read more

Avoid The (Overpriced) '59 Clam Bake'!! I went here with my wife for an early Sunday night dinner at around 5:30. There was plenty of parking, and once inside, the wait for a table for 2 was only a couple of minutes. The establishment is well kept, with a beautiful bar area, and a very nice covered deck area. Neither the bar area or the deck were full at the time of our seating, but neither was offered as a seating choice. We were seated in the lower, back room, with the shades pulled down on every window, and no view at all (granted, the sun was very bright that afternoon). Our waitress arrived almost instantly, introduced herself, and took our drink order (only a cherry Pepsi at this point). She returned with the soda, and stopped back in a few minutes to take our orders. For appetizers we ordered the Tempura String Beans. For entrees my wife ordered the Jambalaya, and I had the '59 Clam Bake'. The '59 Clam Bake' is the most expensive dish on their menu, at almost $40, and is signature named after the restaurant itself. The tempura beans and my side Caesar salad arrived first. "If this was any indication of the food to come, we are in for a real treat" is the first thing I thought. The beans were served fresh and still hot, with a side of 2 dips (watch out for the Wasabi). The Caesar salad was excellent! I would imagine it was a handmade dressing, as it was perfectly balanced. I tried not to eat it all, saving room for my yet to come Clam Bake. My wife then ordered a drink from their fabulous list of drinks on the cocktail menu. She picked the 'Bucks County Social', with the waitress saying that it was her favorite. The drink arrived quickly, and my wife said it was amazing, and prompted me to take a sip. Wow, great drink!! A few minutes later the entrees arrived. The Jambalaya looked, and smelled, good. After eating, my wife said that it was passable, but nothing to write home about. Upon seeing the Clam Bake, I was immediately disappointed. There were only 3 mussels, 3 clams, and 2 shrimp on the plate along with an ear of corn (split in to 2 sections), and 3 small potatoes. There was however, one unimpressively sized lobster (although with its tail shell completely not cracked or split, and no utensils to open it up). The mussels and clams were SO dehydrated (at best description), and were glued/dried to the insides of their shells. The inner 'body' was completely dehydrated/reduced away, down to a thin 'film' on the shell. I couldn't even scrap the little thin layer of mollusk film on to a fork, to even attempt to eat it. (I can't believe I was even doing that looking back, as I now write it out in words.) Note to the chef (or the worker in the 59 Almshouse kitchen playing the role of a chef): The mussels should be soft, but have a tender chewiness to them when made correctly. Clams are usually served slightly chewy, and depending on how they are prepared, can come off as slightly rubbery (certainly not a rawhide/jerky texture). The lobster was SO waterlogged!! One can only imagine that this was boiled, in bulk, and left in the hot water until some unassuming customer orders one, and is only then finally removed and served. Eating the claw meat was like eating poorly stored sushi, almost gooey and runny. The lobster tail itself was not even able to maintain its own lobster tail shape once removed from the shell. I can't remember the last time, if ever, that I did not finish a lobster tail! The potatoes were uninspired, with no flavor, and clearly never introduced to anyone in the spice family. The corn on the cob was good, flavorful, and appeared to have some thought put in to it, but it is only an ear of corn. The cornbread was a pleasant surprise, as it was well prepared, and some of the better cornbread my wife has experienced. The '59 Clam Bake' dish as a whole was completely uninspired, with an inexcusable lack of flavor or spices. It was poorly prepared, resulting in horrible textures, and an almost inedible quality. For drinks, and bar food, this may be your place. If you are hungry for a good meal, or simply want a quality seafood dish, there are much better choices to be had! read more

For a restaurant that has been open for a little less than a month now, it seems like they finally have everything together. I attended the soft opening and it seemed like the biggest problem was the wait for food which leads to the kitchen not being prepared for a rush like that. Even though I waited for almost an hour for food, it was very good and different food for the area. I would say give this restaurant another chance, I went back a second time and the wait for food was under 30 minutes with very attentive waitress making sure we weren't left in the dark. We heard such great things and were very excited to try this as a night out with neighbors. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed in a number of things. First, the service was mediocre with no one checking in to see how the food was or refilling drinks. Second, the meals (only ordered apps and drinks) took excruciatingly long to arrive at the table and they did not arrive all at once so we had members of the party sitting without food for over 10 minutes until theirs arrived. Third, their prices just aren't worth what you get. It wasn't the worse food I ever ate, but certainly wasn't anything worth the price tag - over $130 for 3 alcoholic drinks, waters, and mediocre appetizers for four people. The atmosphere was nice, but the overall experience wasn't the best. Bottom line: we should have listened to our friends in regards to the price and wait and went elsewhere. Most likely won't be returning. We were very disappointed as we heard decent things a few months ago, but perhaps they are short staff or something because recently everyone seems to be having the same experience we did. read more

I went here for dinner and the food was excellent but the customer service was very poor. First it took a hour for our appetizers to come out. We got the bacon appetizer which was delicious. However, our entrees came out five minutes after our appetizer which was very disappointing. I had the southern cobb salad which was average. I spent a half hour waiting in line for the valet service. First they couldn't locate my car and then they couldn't find my keys. It was a very average experience, would of been more enjoyable if the customer service was better. Slightly disappointed since the restaurant is very aesthetically appealing. read more

I live in a Richboro. My wife and I come to 59 Almshouse at least three times a week. We have always found the food and service to be excellent . Servers are very friendly, the food is served in a reasonable amount of time. My wife and I also come here for lunch. This is a go to place for us. All of the important factors are known. Ughhh where do I start with this place? I've given it SO many chances (at least 15-20)and it consistently gets worse. They operate as if it's their first week open. It starts at the front door. Whomever is at the hostess stand always seems annoyed when you enter. Then once they take your name and number of people in your party they act all flustered trying to find a place for you. Even if you have a reservation, they're flustered (which btw when you call to make a reservation that is a problem too bc they are not the nicest over the phone) The restaurant could be empty but they act like they have nowhere to put you. Once you are finally seated the service is ALWAYS slow. We learned to always order our food when they come to take your drink order otherwise, you may not see them again for awhile to order your food. Tonight was the last time I will go back to this place as again same old same old with the rude, flustered hostess problems and slow service but the icing on the cake was watching a woman who is normally a waitress run the hostess stand and she was completely nasty to the customers coming in. We witnessed her get really nasty with this nice couple who patiently waited a long time for a table as did we. The kicker is that the entire left side of the restaurant was empty but people were being told at least a 30 minute wait. When people would ask why such a wait with the one side of the restaurant completely empty they would say we're not opening that side, rudely. Anyway, that's what she did to this couple when they asked except she was extremely rude to them and slammed down a menu. So not how you treat your customers. Anyway, seeing that was enough for our party to never go back. Such ashame too bc we really wanted to love this place bc the food is good but that doesn't make up for the poor attitudes in this place and consistently SLOW service. You should have it together by now 59........ you're no longer a new restaurant in town and there's plenty of new places popping up in Richboro to eat. FYI, Don't buy gift cards from them bc their gift card machine is always down. read more
