We have been coming to 59 Alm House frequently. The food has been excellent every time except last night. I ordered the Thanksgiving dinner which I do on a fairly regular basis and it was like eating a container of Morton salt. The stuffing was so salty and crunchy and the turkey was extremely salty as well. Our server was magnificent as usual. We brought friends with us and they were underwhelmed with their dinners as well. This used to be our favorite restaurant now I'm not so sure. And we are sad. I did forget to mention how loud it was in the restaurant, that was the first time that happened too. read more

I have eaten here probably a dozen times. The food is hit or miss. The good items are exceptional, but the other half of the menu is unbearable. The last few times the service has taken a turn for the worse. Honestly, the hickory old fashioned is the only thing that keeps my interest here. The most recent visit will be the final one. Our food was all brought out at once despite asking for one plate first and the rest after. The Brie plate was not cooked well at all and even after sending it back, I got the same plate again, and it still wasn't heated to where it needed to be. We barely saw a server once our order was taken What really killed the experience however was when I asked for the Philadelphia Union CHAMPIONSHIP to be put on one of the 7 tvs in the bar area and I was quickly told nope. I understand soccer isn't the most popular but it's a local team in the championship and 4 tv's had Tennessee vs Georgia, and as far as I could tell 4 people at the bar were watching the one TV with Penn State playing. I hope the 6-7 Miller lites they order over the course of 3 hours is enough to sustain your business over the $100-$150 we spend twice a month. read more

Went here for a quick note. You supposedly need reservations, but the hostess seated us even though we did not have reservations. Sensed a bit of an attitude from the hostess. Didn't really dig that. Waitress was great. Very attentive and fast. Ordered some beer and were served quick. We both had crab cake sandwiches which were awesome. Nice atmosphere. Priced decently. Worth a trip, but make a reservation. Don't want the hostess to give you attitude. read more

First night back at Almshouse in a few months! We sat outside and I really enjoyed having the space away from the heavier crowd. We started with the roasted cauliflower app and the bang bang shrimp. They were so filling I could only eat half my entree, which was the blackened mahi mahi tacos. Food is always good here and we have been going on a regular basis forever. They messed up all our orders slightly this time but we enjoy the space, food and atmosphere so we will always return. read more

I like trying new places and wanted to give this place a go. It appears that there are multiple seating areas: a regular dining room, a bar where there are many regular tables (where we sat), and a covered deck. In the bar area, they had some televisions on the walls showing various sporting events. Even though there didn't appear to be any noise reducing strategies in the room, we never had a problem with communication- people were cheering whatever they were watching; though I'm sure a more raucous crowd might make it a little harder to hear. My wife started with a soup special: the crab bisque. She loved it. I liked it too as I had a taste. So often bisques can be really creamy (thick), but this wasn't. It was a nice portion size too. As it was on the 'specials' menu, I hope it's a regular special that we can enjoy when going back. I had a garden salad starter that was good. My wife had the dinner special salad with strawberries and goat cheese that she liked very much. I had the 'blues' burger. It was really good. Even though there a lot of ingredients on it, the meat still had a lot of flavor on its own! For dessert, my wife had the chocolate decadence, while I had the chocolate chip skillet cookie. They topped off the meal perfectly for the both of us. As for the service (I see others had issues with their poor reviews), we didn't have a problem. To begin, we made a reservation for 6:45, arrived on time and the girls at the front desk were a mess. We waited for over 15 minutes after seeing the hostess. One was wearing a dress so short it appeared to be a teddie nightgown and when we checked in on the time for our table, she said "oh I forgot about you, but you'll be next". Once seated at our table, we were greeted by the smell of Windex as the bus boy was cleaning up the table with the familiar blue liquid. Not sure window cleaner counts as a disinfectant. The waitress was great and clearly having to try to apologize for how backed up the bar was .. meanwhile there were four people behind the bar. Our grilled squid appetizer was delicious, once we received our forks .. the food arrived first. The blood orange cocktail with Buffalo Trace was delicious! There was a big gap of time between receiving the appetizer and the main course, which made both of us wish for bread or something to snack on. The dinner was really tasty! I've heard great things about 59 Almshouse from my boyfriend and his family, to which whom are local to the area. My boyfriend and I decided to pop in for lunch before my flight home. We were seated by the outdoor bar area which we thought would be a great idea since you usually have constant service in front of you. We were sadly mistaken. We sat down and looked over the menu while our waiter attended to some guests across from us at the bar. Once she came back after about 10 minutes..she asked if we knew what we wanted to order, which we did at this point because we were pretty hungry to begin with. She took our order twice..because she forgot it within a few minutes. Not once did she ask if we would like anything to drink. No water, nothing. A gentlemen came by to straighten up the bar and gave us some water which I appreciated. The food was really tasty which is why I went with 4 stars versus 3. I got the braised brisket entree and my boyfriend got the chipotle bbq chicken flatbread. There were be long spans of time before she would come check on us. We even debated not asking for beers because we knew it would take so much longer than it should. There was a couple sitting near us that sat down AFTER us, ate, paid their bill, and left before we even got our check. In the end, I was ready to go because our service was so poor. Here's the deal, anytime I go somewhere new, I always order a burger because it's the one thing every place will have. And if they give it any attention to detail, the rest of the menu will follow. Well, the details were certainly there. They had several options for burgers, I chose one and it was amazing. Huge portions and delicious. The fries were perfectly seasoned and crunchy and the aioli that accompanied my burger was flavorful. The slaw that came with it the real star. It was fresh and briney and a real palate cleanser. I also had a Mac and cheese which was really good. My only issue was that it was I ordered mid rare and it was a tad bit over done. Service 5/5 This is a rare thing. I'm particular with service but this place was kind to me. I sat at the bar and the bartender, Larry, broke the ice and we hit it off immediately. Eventually he even brought the manager, Anthony, who introduced himself and made it feel like I've been going here for years. Ambience 5/5 This place is super clean throughout. It used to be another establishment and I believe under new ownership, cleaned up its act. There are two dining halls and it's pretty kid friendly. Very modern. It's great for happy hour. Totally impressed! I had a gift card that I've held on to because I wanted to enjoy the outside area of almshouse. Tried a little bit of everything and there was nothing that disappointed, even the drinks. The sweet potato fries were awesome. The cookie skillet made the meal. Even when it started to rain they happily accommodated us inside. We only had to wait 5 min max for a table on a Friday night. You won't find seasonal home-from-college-for-the-summer staff or people without experience. Our waitress and the others seemed very experienced and knowledgeable about the menu. The manager made his rounds to make sure that all the patrons were satisfied also. I am definitely coming back to give the brunch menu a try! I recommend this place to all! read more

Went for our anniversary dinner. I had delicious Lamb Chops, wife had a steak. Both cooked perfectly, with very nice side veggies and carbs. Started with equally delicious Mediterranean grilled veggies plate and Calamari. They get an A+ for the food, and prices are not cheap but are very fair. One star off, because the waitress was not helpful in guiding me when ordering - I basically re-ordered my side-veggies when ordering the Med. grilled veggies, which the waitress should have known and tipped me off to. Also overcharged on some wine, which we corrected easily enough. Our advice: don't over-order, portions are satisfying, and if unclear about what might accompany your entree, ASK. But be confident that the food will be very, very good. Oh, also, it's a loud dining room even with relatively few patrons; they need some sound-dampening drapes or wall-coverings. read more

59 Almhouse has not disappointed us yet. Whether we stop in for a few drinks or an entire meal, we have left satisfied each time. Of special note is the outside bar with a phenomenal bartender. This gentleman is quick with orders and makes a mean old fashioned. My husband remarked that it was the best he'd ever had. We will keep coming back. We do wish, however, that they would consider a truffle fries appetizer or even a fried pickle happy hour snack. Just an idea to make an already great place perfect ;) read more

Bar looks cool but yeah COVID. Wide variety of beers on tap and great cocktail list. They don't seem to enforce time limits on tables so reservations can still wait a bit. Had the tilefish on special for dinner and it was excellent. Very big portions for entrees. Very much enjoyed the poke bowl as well. Always wanted to eat here and recently had the opportunity. I found the restaurant too loud with the server rarely checking in. It seems to be more of trendy drink place then attention to food, as one person in the party had only minimally satisfactory meal that could be purchased at the local grocery hot bar. Finally, the restroom door lock compromised as you'll get a drunk visitor when you are doing your business. You lost me as a return customer. read more

Love this place. My wife and I have been going there a lot lately with friends and sitting outside at the bar. We try to get there early to beat the crowd. Larry, the bartender, provides great service and makes tasty drinks. The beer choice is extensive and we haven't been disappointed with the food. The sticky rice bowls are fantastic. I had the tuna entree last week and it was great. It's all relative but for me, I think the prices are reasonable. Finally, the place looks great. Just came home from a dinner for my granddaughter's birthday at 59Almshouse. This was our first time at the restaurant but my son and his family live not far away in NJ and they'll definitely be back again! Unfortunately, my daughter and I live in FL and don't get up here very often. We enjoyed the surroundings and the eclectic decor. The food was excellent and the portions were more than generous. I had never had cod before and was a bit apprehensive but boy, did I love that dish. It was definitely one of the very best seafood dishes Ive ever had and the sauce was addictive!!! My son's brisket was a standout and the ribs were divine. The server, though I didn't get her name, was excellent. I only wish I could go back on a regular basis and I'd actually kill for the cod recipe,if the chef wouldn't mind sharing with a very happy (and well fed) customer! I came here a few weeks back and had given this place a bad review. Luckily, the manager apologized for my bad experience, telling me that it was an abnormal experience and that I should come back and give it another shot... so I did, and I have changed my review from 2 to 5 stars! I ordered the Mediterranean plate with chicken. It was REALLY good. My best friend ordered some kind of an over-the-top burger that was also delicious! Recently visited on a Tuesday, and was seated in the room where the bar was. A little too noisy for my taste, but the food was very good I ordered the strawberry salad with tuna. It was accompanied with a white balsamic dressing that I felt was a bit bland. My mate ordered a hamburger which came with a delicious and flavorful mayo. I recommend getting some of that as a side to add to the dressing it comes with. I've had a few dinners here. I really like the sweet potato burger as well. She took our beverage order and then came back to get our dinner order. We then received our salads and were not approached again until our waitress came to our table to say hello and apologize for not being able to meet us earlier. Now I strongly support and respect Yelpers, but either their rating is due to past owners, or they've made recent changes other don't know about? We came in on Thursday evening during their Happy Hour! $5 appetizers and drinks was the draw for sure, and our family just down the street that validates this place just made it a no brainer! The two varieties of wings we ordered were fantastic! My favorite, the smoked wings, was just perfect in smokey crispness and loaded flavor! The buffalo wings, while usually not my favorite, was equally as good and something I wouldn't hesitate to reorder! We waited while she seated another party of two then return to her stand to take another customer phone call. Finally looking up, we're informed it will be a 20 minute wAit for a table.
