I've been using this shop for years because their duplicate keys always seem to work fine, unlike those U've had made at local hardware stores. Today I found myself locked out after my lock malfunctioned; my key kept turning without opening the deadbolt. 5th Avenue was able to send a locksmith out within an hour. After getting the lock open he initially said that I'd probably need a new lock, but after removing the lock discovered that there were loose screws. The lock worked fine once they were tightened and it was lubricated; he could easily have sold me a new lock, but saved me that considerable expense so I only had to pay their minimum service charge--not cheap, but well worth the cost IMO. read more

What a fantastic key shop! I came in just this morning to get a copy of a particularly difficult key of mine. It's for a very old lock and I'd had alternative places (like Ace Hardware) make a few copies of it that just wouldn't work. One visit to 5th Ave Key Shop (and 5 minutes later), I was walking away with a brand new key that cost me $3 (which was cheaper than Ace Hardware) -- and most importantly, worked. Had it not, the locksmith had already offered an alternative solution to come out to assess the door/fix the cylinders in the lock. I'm so pleased with the quality of service here and will definitely turn to this shop for all key-related things in the future. This was an important reminder to support local businesses! read more

I went in for a key copy and he made my key. He then said there's a $10 minimum for card, which is totally fine. I said I would go to the atm and get him cash. I asked for my personal keys back (not the key copy) and he refused to give them back to me. He became very rude and hostile and started fighting with me to not give me my keys back. I thought he was going to do something sketchy with my car key since he wouldn't give it back. I finally got the keys back from him literally fighting him tooth and nail. He originally said the price was $4 and when I came back to give him $5, he only gave me 10 cents in change. DO NOT come here unless you want to be treated rudely and get ripped off. Very disappointed and will be going back to the key guys on 5th. read more

I love this place. Respectable, pleasant, and professional! After getting grief from the disrespectful idiot at "Bath Avenue Hardware" who kept messing up on my bottom lock key, I found nirvana in Park Slope. The guy looked at the faulty copy from "Bath Beach Hardware" and told me that the machine used cut way too deep and was not the proper machine for cutting a duplicate for certain types of keys. He offered to repair the faulty key, but it was beyond repair. Since this guy at "5th Avenue Key Shop" knew his business, I decided to have two keys made, one for me and the other for my brother. I was even told that if there were any problems, the keys would be taken care of without a hassle. These keys work! Worth paying $2 for each duplicate. Very happy! read more

Nicky turned up this morning just to do a quote after i'd received 2 quotes from other companies for up to $950 to replace/repair/fix problems we were having with 2 50+ year old locks. Nope no need to replace everything here, will just needs some new parts, i'll charge you $85 + parts of $15 Shazaam 20-25 mins later (about 10 mins each lock problems solved, both working perfectly and he cleaned up after himself). Cant reccomend Nicky enough, was happy to write that check out. read more

Never felt more discriminated than dealing with them. Came to have a key duplicated, after he looked at me then tells me that I have to bring the vehicle and documents proving I could own it, like I couldn't own it. And I needed a safe, instead of spending I rather take my money somewhere else.... Do not give them business!!!! read more

As a new Park Slope resident, I am so happy to have heard about 5th Ave Key Shop. After closing on our apartment we only received one exterior building key (there are two of us!) and no mailbox keys. A neighbor recommended this locksmith and I am so happy he did. Not only were they able to cut a copy of our more complex building key in no time, but they also came over and swiftly and efficiently opened up our mailbox and replaced the lock. DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS! Yes it's a movie but if you've never seen the movie, just come here to see it live on 5th Avenue. Price gouging & horrible customer service at its finest. These guys tried to charge me $125 (talked them down to $75) for a key that did not work, so we were locked out of our apartment overnight! AND they REFUSED to refund my money! They said it was not their problem that the key did not work (human error perhaps?) & they refused to try & redo the key or resolve the situation. I didn't realize keys cost so much these days but I need to start investing in brass! read more

5th Avenue Locksmith, as far as key making goes, is the best. I've used these guys a while now, and I've concluded that if they can't dupe your key, no one can. And the copies they make are sometimes better fitting in the lock than the one I copied! (I have no idea how that works). And they aren't expensive. NEVER any problems. These guys were prompt in an emergency this fall, and when their repairs developed a glitch later in the year, they came and revised the original repair, gratis. They also replaced another lock in the house for a modest cost. They were pleasant, professional and I would recommend them to anyone. (We're in Ft Greene/Clinton Hill, btw). When my wife was stranded outside in the rain because of an exterior door that wouldn't close and lock I gave 5th Avenue Key Shop a call. They said they could get someone over some time during the day, but quickly called back and were at the house within 30 minutes. The door was repaired and lockable soon after they arrived. I had a unique issue with a set of old entryway doors which are original to my brownstone. I needed doorknobs installed so that I could secure the doors AND I had 2 sets of non-matching vintage doorknobs which I wanted to use. Nicki came over, looked at the doors and what I needed, went back to the shop to tinker with what I had to make it work and came back for installation which included drilling a hole for the spindle in a faceplate. He did it all rather quickly for such an amazing price! I am so elated b/c I have had these doors for years and have been unable to get them to stay closed and locked! Now they do, AND my beautiful doorknobs are in place. Would absolutely recommend!! read more

Its truly not my style to publicly trash anyone, so I'll just share my experience with the #5thavekeyshop. I brought my car their to get an extra key made. Well not only they weren't able to give me a duplicate They messed up the originally key and triggered the anti theft system in which shut the whole car down. Then called me and told me to pick up my car. Claiming that it wasn't their falt.( I've already paid in full the $250.00 fee for the key). They said that they've been doing this for years and it had to be something wrong with the hardware in my car. Turns out the only one that can fix the problem is the Nissan dealer. Him and I went back and forth before he decided to have it towed to Nissan. A week and $952.00 in addition to $250.00 later, I got my car back. Nissan gave me a report on what was done to the car and told me whoever was trying to program an extra key for the car did the wrong programming. And when that happens the car shuts down. #5thavekeyshop aka Larry told me that Nissan were crooks and over charged me. And once again said to me that it wasn't his falt. That's my story folks. Needed to swap out cylinders on 2 old locks. Nicky, the technician, came within the time window initially confirmed, swapped out one cylinder and didn't have the model needed to swap out the 2nd lock. So he put in a temporary new cylinder, returned on Monday and put in the permanent high security cylinder we agreed on. Charged me only for one visit. And overall prices were much less than anywhere else I called, including Angie's List "Big Deal" offer! Would definitely use again. read more
