This was one of the best Sichuan restaurants I have tried in New Jersey. We ordered the Black Truffle Beef Fried Rice, Garlic Morning Glory, Snakehead Fish Filet w. Pickled Cabbage & Chili, and Sichuan Spicy Cold Jelly. The Fish Fillet soup was definitely the standout. I absolutely love this dish and order it each time we go for Sichuan food. I really enjoyed the way 62 Secret Kitchen makes this soup. The broth was nice and tangy but the pickles still retained some of their kick. The fish was super tender and the soup was loaded with meat and vegetables. I also really loved the Black Truffle Fried Rice. The beef was really tender and the rice was so flavorful and comforting. I just wish the truffle flavor came through a little more! The Spicy Cold Jelly was just okay for me. It was brutally spicy without much other flavor. The Garlic Morning Glory were super yummy and not too greasy. The leaves were still perfectly crunchy. The inside of the restaurant is so nice and sunlit in the early evening. We sat by the window, which I found really romantic. I loved looking out to the sidewalk and watching people pass by. I also think the service was top notch. Jersey City is getting more and more Chinese spots, and 62 Secret Kitchen is one of the highest rated ones right now. They focus on sichuan and shanghainese dishes, but what really caught my attention was the FREE hanfu experience! It was pretty busy even on a rainy Monday, which says a lot about how popular it is in the neighborhood. It's located near Exchange Place/Grove St PATH! ＊Noodle w. Shredded Beef & Chili Pepper 小椒牛肉絲拌麵 $16 ** Their dry mix noodles totally exceeded my expectations! So saucy, perfectly bouncy noodles, and they didn't skimp on the bell peppers or beef at all. ＊Fried Bean Gluten 蘇式烤麩 $13 * My all-time favorite appetizer! The presentation was a little fancier than other spots, and the portion size matched the price as there were plenty of pieces of bean gluten. ＊Braised Abalone with pork Belly and Quail Egg 鮑魚元寶紅燒肉 $38 A "lucky dish" as abalone shaped like little gold ingots. The abalone was really tender, though I was hoping the pork belly would be melt-in-your-mouth. It came in a hot stone pot to keep it warm. The thick hongxiao sauce made me want a bowl of rice to soak it all up! ＊Tea-Infused Chicken with Mint 香茶薄荷葉香酥雞 $25 I could hardly taste the tea flavor in chicken, but the crispy mint really stole the show! The chicken stayed juicy and tender, and thankfully it wasn't too "yeet hay" after all lol. ＊Osmanthus Milk & Fermented Rice 桂花冰酥酪 $10 ** They've got many traditional, nourishing desserts, like pear soup, black sesame paste, and brown sugar fried sticky rice, but we went for floral and refreshing. Solid winter comfort food. We ordered the seasonal lamb stew and it really hit the spot on a cold day. The lamb was very tender and the broth was rich without being too heavy. Slightly spicy but adjustable. Definitely a rice killer. The shrimp with chives had a generous amount of shrimp and tasted fresh, just needed rice to balance the saltiness. Came here on a blistery Sun night. Thankfully it was very easy to park. The hot tea helped us defrost while we perused the incredibly large menu on their tablet. From what we ordered, loved the blue crabs with rice cakes. The sauce was incredibly addictive. The rice cakes had a nice chew and the crab meat sweet. Oh. My. Jebus. I found Shanghainese Pork and Cabbage Noodle Soup on this side of the Hudson. And it's not only good....It's EXCELLENT! Yes, yes, the dish by which all Shanghai restaurants are judged is XLBs. We didn't get them (*horrified gasps*). Instead, we ordered this noodle soup because it is my personal Shanghai culinary litmus test--and 62 SK passed with flying colors! The noodles were kiu kiu, the pork was buttery tender, the mustard greens were delightfully crunchy--and most important of all, the broth was an umami nirvana. I'm going to throw hands: 62 Secret Kitchen's version surpasses Nan Xiang's, Din Tai Fung's and most of NYC's Shanghainese restaurants. It's that good. Everything else we got was stellar too. The Fresh Chicken in Wine Sauce (AKA Drunken Chicken) was tender and succulent. The Shanghai Meatball with Salted Egg Yolk (AKA Lions Head) was perfectly braised, though a tad too sweet for my liking. And the savory Sauteed Blue Crab with Rice Cake was that perfect dish to ward off the lingering early spring evening chill. Throw in the lovely modern yet traditional Chinese decor and friendly, attentive service (despite the place being packed), and you've got what's easily the best Chinese restaurant in downtown Jersey City. 10 years ago, a restaurant like this probably never would've survived in the area. This is our second time at this Chinese restaurant, and it's just as good as the first! We ordered 1 whole Peking duck, vegfies, soup dumplings, the scallion pancake -- every single dish was excellent. The duck was crispy and super flavorful, and the sides of wrap, cucumber, and scallion were generous and perfectly balanced. The veggies were cooked al dente, just right, and the soup dumplings were filled with plenty of rich broth. The decor is beautiful -- very authentically Chinese, intimate yet elegant, and family-friendly at the same time. The staff were amazing, and we really enjoyed our meal. Pretty decent spot to dine if you are craving chinese food. Their pork soup dumplings were all broken at the bottom due to how thin the skin was but then the top part of the dumpling was so thick and doughy. We also tried their steak and peppers, pretty spicy but solid meal to fill you up. Their pekking duck was soft and tender. They gave a generous amount of wrap and cucumbers with scallion. I just didn't like how the restaurant was empty when we went but was seated RIGHT next to a woman eating by herself. We ended up getting the scallion pancakes & the blue crab with rice cake. Scallion pancakes were good and crispy but could've used some sauce on the side to dip it in. Got takeout of beef and pepper soup noodles, scallion pancake with beef, and braised beef with potatoes. Soup noodles were flavorful with a good amount of meat and peppers. The portion of braised beef had a good mix of tendon, brisket and flank meat with large chunks potatoes coated in a thick sauce, scallion pancake with beef came in 4 pieces and was still crunchy by the time I got it home! It was freezing outside so they recommended a selection of hot tea. We chose a fruit tea that was absolutely amazing. I started with the Steamed Pork and crap soup dumplings and the ShangHai Shaomai both were so good they did want it would take 15 minutes for those to come out. Main dishes I chose the Rice Cake w/ Shredded Pork and cabbage and she got the sautéed greed beans with poke added. Both dishes were big and packed full of flavor.
