NARRATIVE: Arriving, I saw I was the only customer. After speaking with the technician for a few moments and after filling out a few forms, the technician took my car right into their center and began the work. The smog check took less than 15 minutes and the cost was below what I thought it would be. Nice and easy morning. SCENE: Smog Star Express is located at the end of Mars Court in the city of Tracy. They have plenty of signs directing you to their location around the back side of the last building. Brought my car here…read more My car failed smog...guy said bring it back after making "certain" repairs. Saying it would not pass "unless the car was driven a certain amount of miles". Didn't give an explanation of WHY the car had to be driven. So no, I shouldn't bring it back without a mechanics approval because it would fail. Took it somewhere else. The mechanic explained it wouldn't pass unless another mechanic looked at it prior to clear it and the mileage cleared because the computer had to reset. It needed a new temperature gauge. That could have been included in the conversation. Tried to make an extra quick couple bucks. Never will be back. And everyone I know in Tracy has been informed. Before getting into the truck, I specifically asked about the price and was told it would be $325 per hour. The trip took about one hour, so I reasonably expected a bill of around $325-$650 at most. However, after arriving, I was charged approximately $1,300. The company explained that I was being billed not only for the actual towing time, but also for the driver's travel time to reach me and for his return trip afterward. According to them, the driver needed nearly four hours of billable travel time for a route between Discovery Bay and Concord. This was never clearly explained before the tow began. I felt misled by the pricing and would not have agreed to the service had I known the true cost in advance. Make sure you get the total price in writing before accepting any service from this company. I would not recommend them.
