This reviews is to give the general public a warning against incredibly poor customer service and malpractice. Do not take your car to this place for anything! I've owned my 92 Ford pick up for 10 years. I took my vehicle to this place for a general smog test. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my car before taking it here. I was called by the office secretary and informed that the car would not pass smog. She told me there was all kinds of hazard light signals read by their equipment on my dashboard which would not allow my vehicle to pass smog. That was odd for me to hear considering there were no vehicle alarms or hazard alarms before I dropped the vehicle off. When I picked my truck up, I noticed no apparent alarm lights in the dashboard panel. Instead I found that the digital dash was totally blank. Again, this was not an issue with my car before I dropped it off. I asked the secretary can I return the car to them, and can her technician reverse whatever happened so that I can at least see my odometer in the dash. She told me that they had done nothing to the car, they simply put it on their diagnostic machine, and that was it? I told her that this is unacceptable and I would like the vehicle returned to me the way I dropped it off. I could not see my odometer for the mileage or any other digital readings in the dash. Neither did I see any lights that she claimed were lit inside of my dashboard as hazards or alarms. The secretary covered for her mechanic and said continuously that he did nothing to my car. My simple response was if you guys noticed that there were alarm lights going off inside of the dash how can you claim that you did not do nothing to my car? Where are the alarm lights that she claimed her technician noticed making the vehicle non-smoggable? She was clearly lying and covering for her mechanic. This business showed no interest in customer service or addressing my concerns. I would warn anyone to avoid this type of business as they don't even act as if they are appreciative to have new customers like myself. I would not advise anyone to take their car to this place, and I would like to warn the public about their inept mechanics, their rude careless secretary, and horrible customer service. My husband brought my daughters beetle in for the AC. My husband had already looked at it and had asked to to check the control module, 2 hours later he's told the compressor needs to be replaced, no mention of the module. So they ordered the compressor and put it in, doesn't work and they think it's defective, so they ordered another. Put that in and still doesn't work! Then lo and behold what's the problem? The CONTROL MODULE! After 4 workdays (6 including the weekend). My daughter ended up paying close to $900+ and it still wasn't fixed. Disappointed. read more

I have a 1983 Dodge van that I wanted to get back on the road after being inop for 18 years. I found a shop that managed to get it running, but they broke more than they fixed. It was unsafe and I was afraid to drive it. I went to two classic car repair places in Tracy begging for help, but they wouldn't touch it because of smog requirements. Both recommended I take it to Joe's Smog Shack as Joe was the best mechanic on old vehicles needing smog certs. So glad I did. Eva heard my story, took pity on me, and Joe took my van as a project. Joe went through the van and found and fixed a litany of issues (bad manifold gaskets, cracked steering column, gear selector, replaced the carburetor, cleaned, charged and rewired the A/C, heater, new hoses and nozzles for windshield washer, wiper motor, and even replaced my backup beeper). I needed to get my car smogged and I ended up at Joe's Shack for the first time. Customer service was awesome. It felt like I knew the guys for years. They were so nice. BUYER BEWARE: A friend of mine took their car here with an engine mis-fire (the engine was shaking and running really bad, for you non-technical types). The problem was that there was oil leaking into the spark plug tube which filled up with oil and caused the misfire (basically it needed valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube gaskets). To do this job correctly on their vehicle, one must remove the intake manifold to get to the rear valve cover to replace the gaskets. The mechanic didn't bother, he only sucked the oil out of the tubes and put RTV Gasket maker on the spark plug boot in hopes it wouldn't leak again. Of course within 45 days it was doing the same thing again. I ended up fixing it for them the second time because this shop's pathetic 30day warranty had already ran out, so I know for a fact what was NOT done correctly. ______________________________________________________________ I also had a bad experience at this place when I went in for smog check. NOTE When you get a smog check your car needs to be warmed up first. I had warmed up my car nicely before heading over there and when I showed up, I had to wait a little while, which ended up cooling the catalytic converters down. The mechanic tried to sell me new O2 sensors saying they needed it, and I told them NO, take the car for a ride and come back and retest it. Sure enough, it passed just fine after it was warmed up. I definitely won't be going back to this place for ANY reason! read more

It so weird how all of these reviews are based on no experience of their own. No, i don't agree with his response. But here is a real review of my experience a few weeks ago. I went in for a smog check. Joe ran and diagnosed my vehicle before attempting to smog, to make sure the vehicle was running right. (I had my battery unplugged, auto fail) I fixed the easy problem, and did what he said. Again, he helped me for no charge. Don't know the man. Never been to the smog shop! A week later I go back, again before charging me he confirms everything is correct and smogs my vehicle. Pass. No problems. Lady at the front desk was sincerely nice to me and all other guests who came in regardless or gender or race. There is no racist stuff on the wall. I am a competent home mechanic however, after weeks of issues with my 2008 XKR and the check engine light, I was recommended to try Joe's - Best thing I have done in a longtime. On arrival, the shop was busy which is a good sign; the ladies in reception where polite and helpful and I chose to drop my car off with them. I left the car for a day to diagnose and Joe called me personally to advise status, this was a difficult issue to diagnose. The following day they located a bad drivers side Catalytic converter, ordered a replacement and had the car back to me Friday. I drove it for the weekend to set the monitors and just came back from having the smog and certificate issued. The Jag runs great now and I wish I would have gone sooner to see Joe. Overall a great experience and, with a car that is not main stream and quirky I am left impressed at their work. Simple things like a floor mat caught my attention as normally from tire shops to dealers, the techs don't care about the interior, not the case at Joe's. I would recommend this shop to anyone and I will be back with my next car when it needs a smog. read more

The mechanic I took it to tried calling joes smog shack to get information on the parts to investigate any possible warranties or recalls since the part was supposedly new. Joes smog shack was incredibly rude to the mechanic and refused to give any information regarding where they got the parts, meaning I had to pay to replace the parts all over again. read more

This Shop is Awesome! I have been taking my wife's car and my truck to this shop for smog checks, oil changes, water pump replacement on the auto, and recently a transmission replacement on my truck. I've been doing business with them for almost 2 years. Service is excellent! The knowledgeable and professional staff was helpful in determining the problems and gave a clear explanation on how to repair it. I had a recall issue on my LX 570, fixed at Lexus in Pleasanton. They said it would take one day and gave me a loaner car (-standard for a Lexus recall issue). It took them 3 extra days, "waiting for a part", but was fine since I had a loaner. When they called to say the recall issue was done, they said I needed new front brake pads and rotor resurfacing, which they strongly suggested doing before I picked it up. I declined (since dealer work is very expensive) and a trusted source recommended Joe's. When I called, Eva gave me an excellent/ inexpensive estimate, and explained why rotors should be replaced and not resurfaced. She was also (rightly) suspicious that I had no prior brake noises or problems, and arranged for Joe to take a quick look at my brakes, later that day. Joe was quick, honest, and nice enough to let me know that I still had a few hundred miles left till the brake pads & rotors needed replacing. They would also charge a lot less than the dealer and others I had called. Finally, it was a relief that the need was not urgent, especially with my busy schedule. Thanks and kudos to Eva and Joe!! I have met a lot of dishonest mechanics and that's why I do all my own work but unfortunately for us car owners California is a real unfriendly place. This guy tells me over the phone that he can smog my porsche boxster. Now I told him over the phone multiple times if he had experience working on this particular car and he affirmatively said yes. In order to do a smog check on a boxster you need to partially disassemble the soft top convertible remove some molding and the speaker box and the engine cover so they can do a visual inspection of the emission components. He assured me that he had done this in the past. I take the car in and go out to watch him. I see him struggle to operate the convertible top which insists of a release hatch and an electric motor. So at this point I wisely asked him to get out and give me my paperwork and my keys as he has obviously never worked on this particular car. read more
