At first, I thought he was telling me about the well-known convenience store and gas station, but when I looked it up, I realized I was in for more than a ready-made hot dog. Phew! The place was hopping on a Friday night, but the staff was able to keep up with the demand. I enjoyed the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and green beans. I will start with the fact that this has been a staple in Vernal for a really long time, but after taking my family of seven to dinner this evening, I was overly not impressed with the service I received. Our server Alex, we learned as we paid at the end of the meal was new. The reason I do not give it 1 star is because the food quality and cleanliness of the restaurant is impeccable. Where the restaurant lacks will be training. Initially, we told her to give us another 5 minutes so we can look at the middle and help allow 3 children under 10 the time to figure out what they want. Instead, she kept coming back every 30 seconds, "Are you ready?" I respond "No" 30 seconds later, again, "Are you ready?" and so on. Next when it comes to the menu, the patty melt says "house salad or fries". She charged us. Clearly, she does not know the menu, and this is critical for a server to know the menu!!! Next my daughter wanted mac n cheese but while it came with a scone, she wanted fries instead. Not a upsell size fries, she charged for the SIDE OF FRIES. We also requested a side of scones to eat before our meals. She said "How many do you want?" I said a side She says "How many" I said 5? She said nope can't do that? I asked how many can I get? How many do you want and back and forth. Again a good server would know how to address how many I can get. I got to the register to dispute these items and the cashier told me "Sorry I do not have the ability to change anything" In summary, overall good restaurant but if the owners need to fix something is either train people and text them on the menu or get people who do not scam people out of extra money to increase their tip expectations. I read a review while waiting to order that said " have you ever thrown up in your mouth and then swallowed it? Do that instead of eating here"..... I was really hoping that was just a bad day type of review, turned out it was true. I would have eaten my own throw up than eat here ever again. I'm thankful we don't live in town and are only passing through. The chicken tenders were rubber, the mashed potatoes clearly frozen meal warmed up, the ribs were gross and the fish was iffy. The only thing I could stomach was the fried pickles. Our waitress was quiet and hard to understand but nice overall. The rest of the staff gave us rude looks the entire time. I usually order the liver and onions but this time I tried something they've added recently the sausage steak. It was good. The mashed potatoes are real not the quick whip kind. This is a great place and knows exactly what it is. - The food here is really great for what you're paying and is exactly what it is supposed to be. It's an old fashioned home cookin. I got the chicken and potatoes with the soup and salad and that was all just $13.99. The serving size is huge and the food is really nice. Stopped here tonight for dinner and to see my husbands old friend. He recommended the prime rib. It did not disappoint! Best my husband says he's ever had. My hamburger was also great. First time in for breakfast and all in all a good meal. Straight forward breakfast, eggs and meat with hash browns. Couple of omelette choices. Biscuits and gravy and of course pancakes and French toast. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette and my server recommended that I add tomato onions and jalapeño to it. She was right it hit the spot. I had sourdough toast with it and that was not your ordinary toast it was almost a half inch thick and crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It's hard to describe, but I think I expected more because of the entrance, sign, and location. When I see a place like this on a small town main street it's always inviting and is usually the community's crown jewel restaurant. I read a few reviews here on Yelp to get an idea of what to order, and started hoping that other reviews I was reading were just overly harsh. The service is 5 stars. They have fantastic staff who are very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The food was as many other reviews mentioned, below average. With our group we tried a little of everything. Chicken Parmigiana, Spaghetti, Kids meals, Fish and Chips, Beef ribs, the house cheeseburger (Ranch burger? I forget what it's called), and a seafood combo plate that had shrimp, halibut or cod, etc. The chicken parm was probably the best item from the consensus I heard. The guy who got the cheeseburger felt sick all night and ended up throwing up at 2 am. I got the fish and chips. The fish was pretty good and dense, almost like a steak. The chips were unfortunately VERY plain and basic with no seasoning. We still enjoyed our experience because we were having fun in Vernal and the staff was so inviting, but the food really could use a serious renovation. This place is worth stopping in. The food was good, my husband and I both had the chopped steak and grilled onion gravy, it was delicious! We could tell that everything was fresh and wasn't just your usual restaurant food which is what we have experienced when travelling. He had the vegetable soup and mine was the cheeseburger soup. Wasn't sure what that was but both were very tasty. The service was excellent and everyone was friendly with an hometown attitude. Which for myself I like to feel welcomed with a "make yourself at home" smile. They were busy but for a touristy place that is something you would expect. If we ever come back to Vernal I would love to stop back in and hope to see the same smiling faces. Personally I would not change anything about this quaint hometown restaurant. Found this place via google on the drive in. What a horrible experience. When we were seated, around 1:30 pm, there were two other tables in the entire establishment seated. We still had to wait for a table to be cleaned. We finally sat at our table and were handed menus. Out scouting elk. Came through vernal on way back to motel. Decided to give this place a try for supper. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Food was good and to top it all off dirt cheap. Being from Denver there is no way you can get a 3/4 pound hamburger steak for 11.99 with all the fixing. Soup salad and sides. Plus a scone?
