The best Hawaiian food has made its way out to Hillsboro. I used to frequent their food cart in downtown, and then their location off 26, so nice to see that the aloha empire is expanding. This location is across the street from the Hillsboro airport on ne 25th. It's a small house with parking out front and in the back. Food is legit. All your local favorites - loco moco, Korean chicken, shoyu chicken, kalua pig, etc can't decide what to get? Go for the combo I've had most of the items here and they're all good. 808 Grinds in Hillsboro is a cute Hawaiian comfort food restaurant. Although 808 Grinds is a small local chain, the quality of the food is exceedingly better than more commonly known Hawaiian chains like L&L and Ono's. My cousin, sister, and I arrived at 808 Grinds around 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening. I was under the impression it was a fast casual restaurant where you go up to a register to order and then self-serve seating. To my surprise, it was actually a sit down restaurant where tables are waited on. The place had a good amount of people, but there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We opted to sit inside. Although one of the employees wiped off our table, the table top felt really sticky and needed a good scrub down. Customer service was great. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive, and knowledgable of the menu. I also thought that our food came out quickly. We had the rainbow poke to share. It consisted of chunks of tuna and salmon poke on top of wonton chips. The portion of poke was super generous, and the poke tasted fresh. The sauces and seasoning on top brought everything together. For my entree I had the tofu poke salad. It tasted fine, and I liked that 808 Grinds used fried, firm tofu. I was disappointed, however, that it lacked the greens I was expecting a salad to have. It had chopped scallions, some tomato slices, and onions but neither lettuce nor other raw greens. I had one of the spam musubis. You can order them individually, but it came as a better deal when you got 2. I thought the spam musubi was going to be standard until I realized that there was not only teriyaki sauce but also furikake in between the rice and spam. The furikake was a nice touch and added another layer of flavor. I tried a piece of the 808 fried chicken, and I really enjoyed it. The chicken (thigh meat) was juicy and tender on the inside. For being skinless, the chicken bite did have a crispiness to it. I wasn't a fan of the mac salad. It had too much black pepper. read more

We went here on Saturday evening for an early dinner. We didnt really know what to expect. We were greeted at the front and offered seats I side (where it was kind of loud and stuffy) or outside on the not crowded patio in the shade. We chose to sit outside and enjoy the evening. We could hear the concert going on at the fairgrounds kind of faintly and the evening was getting cooler. It took a few minutes for the waitress to get to us but once she did we were offered menus and drinks. My husband ordered a luau punch whick we expected to be from the bar. We were surprised when she delivered it in a can. I had a beer on tap which was actually really good. (Darnit I cant remember the name!) The appetizers pork wontons were pretty good so we had high hopes for dinner! My husband ordered the special blackened mahi with an Asian slaw. I had the chef's teriyaki pork. I should have ordered the garlic shrimp but our waitress made the pork sound yummy. Hubby said the mahi was cooked just right, not dry and warmly treated with blackened spices. The Asian slaw didnt have much flavor though. My pork was sadly overcooked and difficult to eat since we weren't served knives. The macaroni salad that came with it was bland. I loved that our waitress was so eager to please. She wasnt old enough to serve alcohol and was so adorable when she admitted she had no idea what beer to recommend. The patio was great, and the parking, located in back, is convenient and plentiful. Very great family favorite for authentic Hawaiian proteins often well seasoned with tasty sauces and fresh white rice side. We love the chicken katsu, shoyu and kalibi ribs (the meat comes off the bones perfectly with fat cooked down). Only wish pricing was a little more affordable but even for the cost and it's worth it to have a quality fast Togo family meal for busy week days we've really made this is our go to Hawaiian favorite. read more

I decided to treat myself with their short ribs and for $23, there weren't very many short ribs. It felt like a rip off. They also don't even fill up their side dishes all the way. I got the Mac salad and was surprised that the container was only half way full. I've previously tried their 808 Fried Chicken and I found it very dry, but decided to give them another shot today. I'm not sure if I will return, simply because it just isn't very good value for what you get. However, their chocolate haupia pie is out of this world and I highly recommend it. read more

I have always wanted to try this place since it is rated quite high. We ordered take out from the restaurant website (note: you can not order from GrubHub nor yelp, we have tried to find the restaurant but without luck). It was about 20 mins wait till our food is ready and when we arrived everything is already packed ready for us. The whole process is quite smooth. I love their food! I ordered the ginger pork and it is delicious. The pork is really well marinated and I love dipping me with the spicy mayo sauce. They put real grind ginger on the top of the pork, so if you don't like the taste of ginger, this might not be the dish for you. We also get the trifecta, which is a combo that contains shoyu chicken, kalua pig, and fried chicken. The friend chicken is ok not much flavor, but the shoyu chicken and kalua pig are so good. If this is your first time trying this restaurant, I would suggest you order this dish since it contains very diverse tastes and you can try a bit of everything. You can get a lot of different sauces come with the dishes, one thing we didn't know is the sambo sauce. It is actually a chili pepper sauce, and we had to order to figure out what it is. All entrees come with rice and macaroni salad, which you can substitute for the salad. Their macaroni salad is amazing and I love it a lot, so if you have not tried it yet, definitely worth a try. We also ordered their spam musubi as appetizers. It is sooooooo good!!! I know Hawaii dishes are famous for their spam, but this one definitely exceeds my expectation, and I love every piece of it! This is a great choice for Hawaiian food. It's a small establishment and nothing flashy, but the food is hands down solid. It was the perfect place to eat during the Oregon Airshow as well since it's adjacent to the Hillsboro Airport, and we could watch the planes fly overhead as we sat outside enjoying our meal. Been going to the one on Park lane for quite some time. Was super excited when I heard they were moving down the street from us. (They are in Vivi's old location and Vivi's moved into the building next door.) Honestly haven't had anything that I didn't like here. The first time I came here 2 years ago, it left me indifferent. 2 years later I feel like I appreciate the food and the quality more. The loco moco was hot to the last bite. Our pickle is that I'm pregnant and can't have sunny side up eggs, I asked for only one egg and grilled onions on my other patty and they up charge for the onions even though I only wanted one egg; seems like a questionable business decision when you would think onions are cheaper than eggs. Service was fine. Our cashier was really nice, the other worker definitely did not have the aloha spirit. Hopefully service is better after they reopen! read more

I'll admit, the Northeast didn't provide me much of an education in Hawaiian food. However, when I first came out here a few years back, a family acquaintance from the big island gave me a bit of useful advice: Go where the islanders go. In my area, that didn't really narrow it down. The Hawaiian Time chain, Roxy's Island Grill, Hawaiian Kine, Habu Smoke... all get a huge amount of love from the community. It's been a pleasure going through all of them, but my heart is still with the place closest to home. 808 Grinds moved into the old Vivi space and seemed to have a really tough act to follow. But then they put char siu sandwich on the board with the garlic furikake fries. They had me sample their hand-fried wontons and yellow cake. They let me combo up Kalbi ribs and katsu chicken. During the pandemic, they reconfigured the dining room into counter service and set up drinks (Pono Brewing!), desserts and souvenirs along the way. They kept everyone at a distance, moved the party outside and, eventually, added bands to the mix. I now genuinely love this place and use it as a carrot when performing terrible chores like wood splitting or pen mucking ("Just two more hours until 808"). There are place here with different variety and different takes on spice, sauce and breading, but 808 hits the mark every time. That it's always packed with people who either loved their time on the islands or miss them immensely is a testament to their welcoming atmosphere and consistency. read more

It's a smaller place so it fills up really fast, but the turn around time is pretty quick. I had the 808 Combo with the fried chicken and pulled pork, it comes with a Mac salad. My choices of sauces were the Spicy mayo and the soy ginger, truly elevated the taste of the food..!!! The chicken is exceptionally tender and the pulled pork was moist and juicy, with tons of flavor. This location has it all and the food quality is better than the other locations. I'm not saying I don't like the food at the other locations, but it went from good to better and it's noticeable. The atmosphere does help as well, but I did ask and the waitress let us know the main chef runs this location and is probably the reason why. Also, they have live music on Fridays and Saturdays, possibly more, but they happened to be playin on those nights. They also have a HH menu and it's pretty good. I have visited the islands 15 times and the food at 808 Grinds Hillsboro is authentic Hawai'ian style food. The menu has an abundance of pork, chicken, beef and salmon offerings. But there are also several excellent vegetarian choices and the owner is happy to accommodate dietary restrictions whenever possible. We were warmly greeted as soon as we entered. The aloha spirit lives here. You can feel it from the friendly, welcoming treatment you receive from everyone working here. Our server was cheerful and helpful. The man running the show in the kitchen is amazing. He truly shines with aloha spirit. 808 Grinds Hillsboro is open every day except Sunday 10:30am-8:30pm. I'll start by saying I LOVE 808 grinds. We absolutely think the price is worth the quality of food 9/10 times, hands down. Today however was sadly a different story. The rainbow poke we received was very sinewey and had a strong fishy scent to it. My partner and I eat a lot of poke and it shouldn't taste overtly fishy or smell weird. Writing this review with hopes that the management checks in on how the people running their shops prepares food. It simply wasn't worth $18 and I'm now hesitant to order from them anytime soon. Okay, this place is legit and took a few pieces of Hawaii and planted it here in a 1500sqft Hillsboro, Oregon house. Will it grow palm trees and bring a warm sun with white sandy beaches?
