The Beaches Motel & Cottages - Caked on soap on shower head

    The Beaches Motel & Cottages

If you're looking for an affordable, well-appointed, comfortable place to stay, near Maine's…read moresouthern coastal beaches, this could be an ideal choice. This charming, vintage motel + cottages is on Route 1, close to Wells and Ogunquit, and just a short drive from Kennebunk and York. I mentioned "vintage" because this is exactly the kind of vacation lodging your parents or grandparents enjoyed. Typical of that era, the rooms are cozy and face a swimming pool in the center of the property. In the early days, cute rooms like these were ideal for families planning to spend most of the day at local beaches. Also - typical of some vintage lodging - there are baseboard heaters (and a thermostat in the room), in addition to a wall-mounted a/c unit. However, the owners have done an excellent job of providing the modern features that today's guests may expect. The beds are sturdy and the bedding was immaculate, with pillows that provided both comfort and support. In addition to a microwave and mini-fridge (with a freezer compartment) our room had a cute table and chairs for relaxing, eating, or using as a desk. The wall-mounted big-screen TV was perfectly placed, and - since we travel with our own Roku - it was easy to access our favorite shows. (A Roku is not necessary for guests to enjoy a wide range of programming.) And Internet service was excellent, as well as secure. We also had a sturdy luggage rack plus a wardrobe with shelves as well as space for hanging up clothes. The water in the bathroom was nice and hot, though the water pressure in the shower varied considerably. Nevertheless, the towels - like the bedding - were top quality. I've noticed that some previous guests had commented on what they perceived as dirt in their rooms. When we arrived, our room was absolutely immaculate in every respect. What newcomers to this area may not realize is that - in vintage lodging - the door to the outside may not fit snugly. So, since The Beaches is next to Route 1, there's quite a bit of dust churned up by traffic, and some of it can drift in, especially if you leave the front door open. (Note: We didn't experience much traffic noise, and - as I'm writing this - I had to pause and listen, to even notice the sound of passing cars.) Also, the walls - being from an earlier era - are fairly thin. You may hear your neighbors. We travel with a small "white noise" generator, for times when we go to bed early. However, we'd moved to this hotel from a nearby 3-star hotel which - though recently built, and charging at least 2x more than The Beaches - had noise levels in that were unbearable. After our third night at that other hotel, we were eager to leave. All in all, though Google suggests this is a 1-star hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by how much The Beaches provides, in addition to a prime location that's convenient to everything the southern Maine coast has to offer. If you're a fan of vintage lodging, this is a great deal and a fun place to stay at alone, as a couple, or with your family.

I was a bit early, so I called the number that was provided for assistance. No response. When I did get into my room, I was so disappointed. Had the warmth & charm of a haunted house. No closet? No clock? No hair dryer? Scuffed up walls. Shower head with soap from previous guests. Toiletries in packets like ketchup instead of bottles. Rusted metal kitchen set. Furniture looks like it was bought at a yard sale. Window screen was damaged & ripped open. Wanted to sleep with the window open by was concerned about safety. (Window was right by the door.) Ended up packing all my belongings in the middle of the night & driving home. I worked for the airlines so I've seen many hotel rooms. Paid for 3 days, stayed 9 hours. This was by far the worst. So much for my vacation. Scary place.

We stayed in the contemporary cottage for a week and we stayed in unit #46. I'd like to say that…read morethis is NOT a good unit if you have kids. While it was clean, it had huge furniture that took up a lot of space, the TV's were old outdated tube tv's, the one in the bedroom didn't work and the grill needed to be replaced. There were roman blinds that were a death trap for kids and the flatscreen should have been tethered to the wall. However, we did look at a few other units on our stay and they were so nice and cute with nice furniture/decor. The other units seemed more open because of the appropriate sized furniture and decorating. We loved the contemporary feel of the kitchen and the washer and dryer was so awesome. It was so nice coming home to no laundry! We also looked at the condos and they are beautiful and spacious. Each unit is individually owned, so it's the owners taste on the furniture and decorating style. Unit 46 would probably be suitable for an older couple or someone who had older kids. We booked late and got last minute reservations so that is what we ended up with. When booking ask for a nicely decorated unit! There are 2 pools, a hot tub and a little wading pool for kids, all very clean. The grounds are kept up very nicely. Everyone who was there was extremely nice, most of the people that stayed there are owners, all friendly and very nice. It felt very homey our entire stay. The view is very pretty. I would absolutely stay here again. It really is a little hidden gem. I would just ask to stay in a different unit. Our stay was fabulous and we had such a great week. We felt like we didn't even need to leave the property our kids loved the pool and made a bunch of friends to play with. We will be back next summer for sure!

There are lots of things we appreciate: clean, fresh-smelling rooms, good AC, good blackout curtains, and good water pressure in the shower. But there's more: a very friendly front desk staff who prepare chocolate chip cookies every afternoon, a free hot breakfast, pleasant-enough pool (heated just barely by our standards) and a good fitness room. There are a few things that didn't quite match up for us: the hot breakfast is a bit hit-or-miss depending on your preferences; there are very few places to eat close by; and a trip to Kennebunkport can take 15 minutes with moderate traffic. Bottom line: we like Hampton Inns, and this seems a good one, the positives definitely outweighing the negatives, and it's fairly priced for this area during the summer months.

It was almost 3:30. They said that room was not ready yet. I asked would it be ready by 4. No guarantees. Ok. Only other room ready was on the 3rd floor. Ok. I'll take that one. I paid my room by points, made a reservation by credit card and still insisted they swipe my card for $50 of incidentals. bTW, I never have incidentals. Room. 4 stars. Large plenty of extra space. Comfortable extra chaise in addition to the desk chair. Dumb position of microwave (could not read the small numbers) under the TV and the coffee machine on a pullout shelf at floor level. Ridiculous. Nice spacious bathroom with walk in shower. Thermostat allowed you to adjust for heat or cool and it worked well. Breakfast 2 stars. Canned hash and powdered scrambled eggs. Waffle iron coated with stuck on waffle. Coffee is tepid. (As is the all day lobby coffee and "hot" water). Hotel environment 4 stars. Common areas were clean. Computer for business, extensive commissary, gym and pool all available. Parking was plentiful on our stay. Not many places to replenish supplies or get a quick meal within 1/4 mile except a convenience store next door charging almost 10% higher for gas than on the Maine Turnpike.
