From the start, the hotel did not provide basic accessibility features:    *   I was told there was a pool lift--there was not.    *   The bathroom in the room lacked required grab bars around the toilet. The hotel did move us to a larger room that was described as having a roll-in shower. However, while it may have been considered "accessible" on paper, it was not usable in practice. The shower had a marble threshold that I could not get my walker over independently. The space itself was extremely tight (approximately 3'x3'), and the opening barely accommodated the walker. There was no shower seat, and only a fixed shower head, which meant I required assistance to use it at all. I even had to bring my walker into the shower, soaking it in the process. This is not functional accessibility. We spent hours on our first day trying to work through these issues with staff, which caused us to miss previously secured dinner reservations at Magnolia's. As a result, we ate at the hotel's restaurant, Grill 225, assuming the situation would be appropriately addressed. Instead, only $100 was taken off the bill, which did not reflect the time lost or the impact on our stay. What was most disappointing was the lack of meaningful engagement from management. We were repeatedly told things would be passed along, but no one in a decision-making position addressed the situation directly--even while senior leadership was on site. There were also inconsistencies in how amenities were described. The pool was presented as heated, but when we asked about it, one staff member struggled to explain before another stated plainly that it was "heated by the sun." That moment reflected a broader pattern where expectations set by the hotel did not match the reality on the ground. This experience was not just inconvenient--it created real barriers and safety concerns. For a hotel positioning itself as a luxury property, this level of inaccessibility and lack of accountability is unacceptable. I hope ownership takes this seriously and makes the necessary changes so future guests do not have the same experience.

From the lobby up to our suite, the hotel exuded classic Charleston charm. From the brass accents to the bedroom details. The suite was a reasonable size for two people sharing a double bed room, especially for a short turnaround stay. The colors, the view, there was nothing more I could have asked for. Guest services was attentive and very pleasant, and the door staff greeted us with genuine smiles. Overall, no complaints on service. There were a couple of drawbacks. The elevators were extremely slow and made some strange noises. The bathroom, as others on Yelp have described, felt like a "Tetris puzzle"you had to maneuver carefully between the sink, toilet, and tub. The tub itself was quite small, especially for a larger person. However, no one really vacations just to stay in their room. The hotel's location is unbeatable, right in downtown Charleston, with everything within perfect walking distance. Knowing what I know now, I would not let the few negatives outweigh the many positives of this quaint and charming hotel.

It used to look like you were stepping back into the parlor of one of the houses on the battery, including earthquake bolts from the 1800's in some of the rooms. Some of the guest rooms had canopy beds and all were quite romantic. I am southern and it was the epitome of old South beauty, grace and charm. It had a parlor like room off of the lobby where visitors sat, like they would have in olden days and the hotel served wine, cheese, crackers and grapes etc, and cookies at night. Guests used to sit and chat, play checkers and just relax. They now give out wine and later at night, they still have tasty cookies, but no one eats, drinks or really sits in the lobby because it is filled with some awful perfume or scent. Now the hotel looks like it belongs in Vegas. Red and black lacquer everywhere, in the lobby and rooms, the ladies room in the lobby is lit by red light bulbs, like a house of ill repute-see my photos. For some reason a designer seems to think this is a French look, but I think the French would be appalled. The French have beautiful understated tastes, think Christian Dior. I assure you, this is not what the French quarter of Charleston would have ever looked like. I sent some photos of the room and the lobby to a friend and she said that it looked like we were in a Disney hotel. She expected Mickey or Minnie to step out any moment. After that comment, that's all I could see -even the lobby floor and some fabrics in the furniture look like Alice and the white rabbit could show up. On top of that, if The Vendue management sees this review, please, please, please stop pumping that scent into the lobby. It's painful to just walk through to the elevator. All this said, the staff is wonderful. They're friendly, helpful and they must watch a video feed of the lobby because the minute you stop in the lobby they pop out from somewhere. There is no front desk. I'm glad for them, I would hate to have to spend my day in a lobby that was so heavily scented. I usually like scents, but this one burned my nose. I'd give the staff 5 stars and the look of the hotel one star since it is Charleston, since people come to Charleston for the southern beauty and charm. We think we'll look for a more Charleston charm-like place when we visit Charleston and save the red and black for our Disney visits and the lacquer for Vegas trips. If you are from other regions or countries, please don't think this look represents anything of Southern beauty or charm. It does not.

This is a charming, well-run inn of about six units that punches well above its size. Its location is truly ideal: just a block from where I had my dental procedure, and right next door to a wonderful family-owned Italian restaurant -- a lifesaver when you need good food close by (especially with a sore mouth!). Despite recovering, I still managed to explore a bit. Folly Beach is just 20 minutes away, Mount Pleasant is a quick 10-minute drive across the bridge, and downtown Charleston -- with its stunning antebellum homes and excellent dining -- is right down the road. Everything felt wonderfully accessible. The home is 3 stories and has a common living room area and kitchen. We walked through the neighborhood and gained knowledge about the value of the homes, community and the diversified living. This was an ideal place to stay because of the location. Close to shops, restaurants, and the hospital. There were guests staying there who had family members in hospital care and other tourists just exploring Charleston like us.

I chose the hotel, because I wanted to stay somewhere with historic charm (I wanted to feel I was in Charleston)! It was an all right stay. T he building (a historic house) was beautiful - especially the porch, where you can sit and enjoy your coffee in the morning. Our room was nice (it had the wallpaper and wood features I really wanted), especially the bathroom. But the room had seen better days (peeling wallpaper), wasn't the most functional (no outlets near the bed for charging phones), and had a strange basement room (down the stairs was a basement room with a TV, bar, and couch - it was a little creepy, but more than that, I just didn't think it was safe to have those steps so close to the bathroom door - someone who'd had a few too many drinks might just fall right down those steps. The location was okay/pretty good - not really in the heart of things, it was about a 15 minute walk to King Street. This worked for us on Saturday, because it was a lovely day and we had a chance to see a bit of the city (the 15 minutes is a great walk past restaurants and shops), but the weather on Sunday made the distance not so great. And FYI - the walk to the Battery would probably be an hour, but you can obviously Lyft/Uber or pedicab. The location was great if you want a little separation from the more touristy parts of downtown or a quieter neighborhood, but we did Uber more than we normally would on a weekend trip. My biggest gripe is that the hotel is a no-staff or self-service hotel (there's no one to check you in and you are sent the information you need to get into your room ahead of time by text). I've stayed in no-staff/self-service hotels on two other occasions. Sometimes it works out fine, but it really turns a hotel into an airbnb. You can't leave luggage with the front desk if you're checking out hours before your flight nor are there the amenities you might expect at a hotel with front desk staff. I didn't realize from the description on hotels.com that The Ashley was a no-staff/self-service hotel, and I probably wouldn't have booked it if I had known (because we had a 6pm flight and ended up having to store our bags in our friends' hotel). The staff (not on site but available by text) were responsive and helpful, but I think I just prefer a standard hotel. Overall, our stay was fine, but I probably wouldn't stay again.

As with any older house the bathrooms were very small and hard to maneuver. The carriage house had a musty smell which was not great. We absolutely loved the area and were aware that we were a little far from a lot of the touristy things but we were fine with that. We were walking distance from King Street which was nice. The fire pit and the porches are worth the stay - absolutely breathtaking. We spent a lot of time outside which was great. The snacks and drinks were very nice. The breakfast was good but it is a bagel sandwich which is a little too heavy for me. I would stay hear again.

Lovely high-quality hygiene products in the bathroom. The bathroom was a good size with flooring that was not slippery. The queen bed was very comfortable with tall refrigerator and even a dishwasher. There are lots of extra pillows for watching tv in bed. We'll definitely be back to The Iris on our next Charleston adventure.
