I love visiting rooftops when I travel and I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, the weather turned on us right as we arrived and it started to rain and became windy so we ended up having to huddle inside to sip our cocktails and snack. While I enjoyed my pineapple daiquiri and fries, my friend's brussel sprouts were so disappointing that we've joked about them many times since. We stopped into The Dewberry while exploring Charleston to celebrate our 10th anniversary. This is a stunning hotel with a luxury feel from the moment you step foot inside the building. We decided to have an anniversary champagne toast in the Living Room lobby bar & lounge. We had our little one with us and they were even kind enough to offer us a highchair for him. This isn't the kind of place I would have expected to even have one, but we were pleasantly surprised by just how baby-friendly Charleston was as a whole. Their brass bar is so beautiful and it was a nice place to lounge for a bit and recoup from the heat. My husband & I are definitely hotel enthusiasts and The Dewberry was top notch. A quick detour from King Street and you see the Dewberry peering over Francis Marion Square. The architecture is not the normal Charleston look but somehow it fits in and is peaceful. Walking in feels warm and inviting as you check in and get brought tea and refreshments. The staff is friendly and super helpful with advice for restaurants and the surrounding area. The Dewberry- Not a 5 star experience The website proudly states they were a 2024 Michelin star recipient! That sounds amazing until you arrive and find out Henrietta's is permanently closed. But do keep that deceitful website unupdated to lure in more unsuspecting guests. Did I say deceitful website? Do NOT beleive the room pics! I got a 1 bedroom suite which sounds extravagant for such a facility. But it's not. I've had more room at MOST roach Motels... yes the ones with the doors on the outside. There was no space to unpack. None. Everything was cramped without space for two people to pass each other in the room. So about 290 square feet for a 1 bedroom SUITE! It's not what I would call a suite. No refrigerator. No coffee maker. Uncomfortable bed and furniture. The wicker chair at the desk was insanely uncomfortable. The Spanish Inquisition called and they want their confession device back. Speaking of disregarding the rights of people... The City of Charleston is already on the wrong side of history supporting slavery and firing the first shots of the War of Succession, or the war of we like slaves and will kill to keep them. The Dewberry continues this tradition of trampling the rights of the people people by taking a giant crap on the constitutional right to Keep and Bear Arms. Signs everywhere clearly deny all American citizens who stay there the ability to do so while armed. Furthermore, they don't provide for additional security after disarming their guests. So feel free to keep your constitutional rights in your vehicle. The deceitful website says guests MAY make use of the valet parking but that's not true. Guests MUST use valet parking for another $50 a day cash grab. So yeah... not a secure way to secure one's armaments. The TV might say Welcome (YOUR NAME) but it feels like a lost guesture when they cant spell your naeme correctly. The rooftop bar is advertised on the website but you have to be in a special club to be granted access. But you don't want it. The menu is VERY limited and the drinks start at $20. I stay a lot of places and most have a 24 hour cancelation policy. But not the Dewberry! Nope. It's a whopping 72 hours and it's easy to see why. They want to pretend to be a luxury facility but when you get there and realize how crappy it is you can't shorten your trip for a day without being charged over $500 a night. More in my case since I upgraded to a room much worse than a Days Inn or Motel 6 and I'm sorry if it seems like I'm disparaging those institutions. They at least provide services on par with their costs. The website says they'll charge you a nights cost for cancelling inside of 72 hours. Go ahead and try to check out a day early, they also happy to charge you! I checked out early, eating the cost and it was worth it. The employees were great, though despite their efforts cannot overcome the experience of The Dewberry Will. Never. Repeat. read more

The location is great, as are the super-luxurious rooms. The staff couldn't be friendlier and more professional. The decor is elegant. But a few downsides. (1) The "dining room" is more like a lobby: almost no real tables so you end up sitting on a much-too-low chair front of a coffee table. (2) The rooms are noisy. The building was originally a federal office building, not built for quietness. You can hear your neighbors, and the slamming of other guests' doors is really annoying. (3) You have to go to the lobby and get a pass to get up to the rooftop lounge, which is jammed with the public. read more

Our very favorite place to stay in CHS. They have the most comfortable rooms, the best views, the most accommodating staff, and the best room service. Located in the heart of the city, the Dewberry is within walking distance of many attractions and restaurants. We had our two young kiddos staying with us, and the staff made them feel right at home, with special desserts and other daily treats. We will stay again (and again)! I hopped in The Living Room for a small nibble. I wasn't quite ready for alcohol so I settled for the Dewberry Tea Frizz mocktail and it was soooooooo yummy!!!! It was not pure sugar and a great balance of flavors. My wonderful waitress (I believe her name tag said Abby/Abigail and she had long blonde hair) really encouraged me to try it and I'm so grateful I did!!!! LUXURY! The interior design gives classy but old school proper. Our room was very CLEAN, plus they give you more towels then you need which a girl can appreciate! We stayed in the Charleston flat with a tub next to a big window. Super relaxing after a long day of walking around CHS! Beautiful view from the upstairs restaurant. Lauren at the front desk was very accommodating, asked all right questions and made sure we got the most out of our stay. Champagne prices for boxed wine service. Let me start by saying that the room was well appointed and the property is very nice- My wife and I stay primarily at the ritz, Regis and any very nice little hotel such as the Dewberry any chance we get - however for 1200 per night, I expect at least 2 ply toilet paper, housekeeping to hang robes, possibly turn down and restocking of the minibar. Further, the citrus rooftop bar is lovely, but the staff is miserable and they make certain you know it. I have worked both sides of the bar and will tell you that we are 100% the clientele that this establishment is targeting. It's a shame as we are frequent visitors to Charleston and we're looking for a home away from home. I hope the Dewberry takes note of this review- place could be a gem. read more

The Dewberry has a lot going for it, but it needs some major polishing. The pros are the very friendly staff (valet, front desk, dining venues), the car service (you can get dropped off anywhere in downtown and borrow an in-house car for a few hours on a first come-first serve basis), nice decor in the common areas and a really pleasant smell. The food offered on site is pretty good and the ambiance at both restaurants is really nice. The cons mainly have to do with the facilities. Our room was a double queen and very spacious, but several outlets didn't work, one of the shades didn't go up more than a few feet, the shower didn't drain well, the toilet was loud and made a loud gunshot sound when flushed, and the carpet throughout the hotel needs to go. It looked like someone gave birth on the carpet outside our room and I saw stains like this elsewhere throughout the hotel. Seriously, just do away with the carpet altogether and put in hardwood floors or something that resembles hardwood. Carpet is so foul in a hotel, God knows what's in it. Also, the coffee was horrible. Overall, the Dewberry has the makings of an amazing hotel, but someone needs to come in and give it a major overhaul starting with those nasty carpets and the broken down infrastructure in the rooms. read more

5 star 48 hours in Charleston starting with the Dewberry. Many would take away a star as they are under renovation but we are not high maintenance when it comes to that type of thing. The place is immaculate and the service is top notch. Our room was luxurious and one of the most comfortable beds I have stayed in. My husband and I stayed in a king suite room and enjoyed every minute of our stay here. The furniture was solid, decor in the room was cozy, and there were two wall mounted flat screen TVs (one in the living area and one in the bedroom). My favorite part was the massive bathroom: it had double sinks and the water pressure in the shower was amazing. The location is pretty central and the hotel also has a valet service that does drop offs for free within a certain distance from the hotel. One thing I will say is the fee to park your car may not be worth it as you can find cheaper parking in the area. Overall, the valet service, concierge, and staff were all super friendly - we definitely experienced true southern hospitality during our stay! read more

My husband and I spent an anniversary weekend in the city for the first time, and based on recommendations we stayed Mount Pleasant side the first two days and switched to the downtown area our last night to enjoy a luxury hotel closer to everything. We booked a king suite here and overall were somewhat disappointed. Pros: The building is beautiful, the front desk/valet folks were super kind, and the location was great. Room size was smaller but still enjoyable for us. Cons: The wait for the Citrus Club (a huge reason we booked here) was awkward-- you check in on the first floor and have to go back down for a pass, which seemed a little inconvenient. The drinks were around $20 each and weren't really worth that price. Two elevators were not enough for the Saturday night crowd/Sunday morning exodus (we waited about 20 minutes trying to take an elevator out). The whole experience just didn't seem worth the price, especially when we had a way better experience at a hotel half the price the two nights prior. Overall if you're staying in Charleston for a quick getaway, I'd opt for a cheaper option/better experience in Mount Pleasant. read more

I didn't feel like service or quality was shortened like some hotels. Room service was still an experience. The house car drivers were pleasant. Christopher, Carly, Justin, and Suzanne were extremely helpful. The Curtis Club was a breeze! Great view. I grew up in Charleston and this experience really gave me a different view of Charleston. The Jamaican beef patties were on point! I really enjoyed taking the complimentary bikes for a ride early Sunday Morning! So relaxing to ride all the way to the Waterfront park! I highly suggest! This place is simply the worst! It's extremely overrated, overpriced, and a terrible experience overall. The staff is extraordinarily rude and pretentious. They act as if they are working for The George V in Paris when they are actually in South Carolina!? From the moment my wife and I walked in, we were hit with attitude. The front desk staff is rude; the male bartender ("mature" guy) is the most arrogant rude person at the hotel, and that's saying something as the competition is quite stiff. The rooftop bar "guards" act as if they are running Studio 54 in 1981, protecting Mick & Bianca. It appears this dump caters to the less experienced traveler, and this is how they get away with their antics. If you are an experienced traveler, do not waste your time and money and stay here, as there are too many better options. The one saving grace was a young lady named Kiley who works in the bar/lounge/restaurant area. She is sweet, kind, and extremely client-centric. She should be running the place! read more

We stayed here for 3 nights.. the photos make the room look grand. In actuality they are small. They are pretty. Exactly like photos in that sense. The girl at the front desk with the heavy accent was VERY rude and condescending. Just seemed annoyed every time I walked up. I was hoping every time not to get her as the other staff was nice... with the exception of the bar tender who wouldn't give me a glass of water bc he said the bar wasn't open even though he was standing behind the bar. Cons: Bad TV in the rooms super out dated, on top of that no movies and no smart TV. ( this sucks bc it rains a ton and there is down time in the room) we got poured on drenched wet and they wouldn't upgrade our room to a tub room even though it was available. What makes the Dewberry so special? The magic is their customer service...it is extraordinary! The hotel is very nice but on par with other luxe hotels. The real difference is the people that work there. We needed an executive board room for meetings and since no one had booked it, they gave us one for free with their compliments. We ordered room service and it was delicious. Plus having a drink from the rooftop citrus bar with real citrus trees and views is the holy city and water is divine. read more
