We stopped at this little restaurant off the road at 10:30 in the morning to have breakfast. We ate out on the back porch in the cool shade. There were about 4 or 5 parties total. Enough to make you believe it must be a good place to eat, but not too many during this time of COVID. Our waitress, Pam, was extremely attentive and gave us her best service throughout our meal. My husband and I both ordered the Home Style Plate with two eggs any style, choice of meat, potatoes, and choice of bread. It was served hot and was very good. We both cleaned our plates. Great find in Clayton! I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and vegetable of the day (peas). You can add red or cream sauce on the steak in place of cream gravy. I chose a side of red along with the gravy on the steak. The red sauce is delicious and definitely homemade! The food was delicious, service was friendly and the place was clean. Great place to wait an hour for one cheese enchilada and a scrambled egg that is kind of warm. A plus is that if you wait thirty minutes they will bring you out some chips and salsa. It's a great way to kill time if you've been in a car and want to find out what it might be like to live in Clayton NM because you will be waiting long enough to set up a place of residence. I don't believe the owner will be calling any "team-meetings" about this review (not really that kind of place-which is fine) but maybe I can save a couple people from the urge to stop and eat if they are in any desire to reach a destination other than 87 restaurant itself. read more

Been there several times and always slow, poor quality, and overall not a good experience. Last time, and I do mean the last, our order was so slow, inefficient, and distasteful I asked to speak to the owner. After waiting, he never responded. Sent a Facebook message to the store privately and still no response. Not the way to run a business in a town the size of Clayton. read more

I had 3 meals at 87 while I stayed in Clayton. I had pork chops and mashed potatoes with a veggie which were very good; scrambled eggs and chorizo with beans, fried potatoes and a fresh tortilla which was fantastic; and I had the catfish dinner which was the best I have ever tasted! Light, crispy breading and fresh, firm, light, flakey inside. It was sooo good! The staff were pleasant and accommodating. I saw other plates come out of the kitchen that made my mouth water as well. I will be eating there again on my next visit... leaving a restaurant happy and satisfied is the best compliment to give, and I did each time! read more

We ate here as a family after a long weekend of skiing at Angel Fire on the way back to Oklahoma. Nice atmosphere for family and a great menu. Each of us had a little something different. I enjoyed the Chorizo burger which is a large hamburger/chorizo patty with your choice of cheese. I had to get pepper jack to make it a little spicier. The fries at this place were delicious. Wife had a Cobb salad, 12 yr old loved the Tuscan chicken sandwich, 11 yr old had catfish nuggets and the 9 yr old had corn dog bites. I tasted everything off their plates and it was all good. Alaina was our server. She did a great job recommending items and kept our glasses full. We hope to stop here our next time thru. read more

Quality was fair, but greasy, and the baked potato came out undercooked. Food seemed like it came out of cans. Not all breakfast items were available all day, despite claims that breakfast was available all day (i.e., oatmeal, which is what my child wanted). We stopped by the 87 restaurant on our way out of New Mexico. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside is very cute, clean and comfortable! Our server Elena was supper personable and loves to get to know her customers. She was very observant.Not once did I have to ask for a refill on drinks.The chips and salsa are made fresh the fries are hand cut, and the chicken fried steak is homemade. Well first off, the place was dirty. My chicken tacos came out incorrectly I had asked for sorta don got hard, not a big deal though. The food quality was really poor. The rice was crunchy and the chicken was either badly grilled or frozen. We waited around 25 minutes for a table, and they acted like it was an inconvenience. I would give 0 if I could. read more

When we returned to Clayton, we wanted to see if 87 had changed....I have to say it has but, not for the worse. The service is quicker than before and the quality is still excellent. Great little restaurant in a quaint little town. We stopped here after a long, early morning drive on our very long way home to Kansas. Our two small children don't like to sit very long on long drives, so of course they wanted to be out of their seats playing around. They weren't too crazy, but they would occasionally be in the way of the two waitresses busily going by. Both of the waitresses were very patient with our little ones and were very sweet to them. This goes a long way in my book when it comes to being a family friendly restaurant. The food was very good, which was also a plus! My husband ordered the breakfast enchiladas and they were absolutely delicious!! I shared a very large plate of eggs, home style potatoes, bacon and toast with my two kids. Everything was very good and tasted WAY better than what you would get at a Denny's. I'm so glad we stopped to eat here. Great food and friendly service!! read more

We arrived about an hour before closing on a Saturday night. There was still a good crowd here, and we opted for a table outside instead of waiting for a large enough table inside. The service was attentive, and there were a lot of good menu options. We had a variety of plates, from the kids' Alfredo to burritos and enchiladas to breakfast plates. Generous servings, and everything was delicious. We needed to-go boxes for the leftovers and didn't even have room for dessert--unusual for this crew! We would recommend. read more

Let me count the ways... the "cheese" was grossly rubbery, as was the "chicken". Even the tortilla was inedible. Good service with below-average to average food. I ordered the chicken alfredo. The garlic toast was good, but the chicken was not that great and was greasy. The kids got the chicken strip dinner. It just did not seem that fresh and was very greasy. My wife ate her enchiladas, but did not care for them that much. She said the rice was overcooked and would not touch it. The only thing this place needs is MORE customers. Hubby noticed this place when we stopped for gas at Love's in Clayton. It was a bit after 2PM so no other customers when we arrived. We were given chips and salsa when we were seated. Hubby and I had the 87 burger with fries. Both were definitely homemade and great! Tired and just a little hungry, we arrived in Clayton and had a delightful experience at the 87 Restaurant. We ordered a taco platter to share, with an extra taco, two soft and two hard. All we're fresh and delicious, with soft rice and yummy whole beans on the side. The taco meat was a bit dry and crispy but still tasted good (3 Stars maybe?), especially with the fresh homemade salsa. Monique was our server and did an excellent job on her first day! Friendly, attentive staff overall. We will come back on our next trip through Clayton. read more
