I recently did a lens replacement for some high quality sunglasses for which I needed a prescription change. Besides placing the same SPH in both eyes although I showed them an Optometrist prescription that asked a different SPH for each eye, I just checked the "refurbished" sunglasses UV protection with the UV flashlight test and the $20 bill. Although they told me the tinted lenses would have UV blocking protection, these lenses FAILED the UV blocking test. I would be damaging my eyes if I would keep using them!!!! Came here to get some prescription lenses installed into some sunglasses I bought at a fancy grocery store down the road. $85 got me a colored tint plus some strong lenses. No service fee, no hassles, no surprise costs, no upselling. When glasses need to be fixed as the lens fell off after wearing it only for 5 times (as they are cheap quality), one gets to see the rude salespeople. We have been using them for all our eyeglass needs for over 15 year and have always been very pleased with the quality of the services, and pricing which is also very reasonable. We're tried other stores, and they don't compare by service or cost at 88. In addition, all of the staff is just so helpful and pleasant to deal with. This place is a complete scam. I went in to have my new eyeglass prescription filled, and they made the lenses the same day. Unfortunately, when I tried on the glasses, my vision was actually worse than with my old prescription--blurrier, not clearer. When I raised the issue, the salesperson suggested I see their in-house optometrist, implying my original prescription might be incorrect. I agreed, hoping this would resolve the problem. The optometrist said there was only a very minor difference from my original prescription but wrote a new one anyway. I assumed the store would replace the lenses using the updated prescription. Instead, the salesperson tried to convince me that the glasses I had already complained about were "fine" and that updating the lenses wasn't necessary. I was then charged for the eye exam. It was clear they were far more interested in collecting an exam fee than in correcting my vision. This place operates like an eyeglass mill--focused on selling cheap glasses as quickly as possible, whether they actually work or not. Don't waste your time or money here. Go to a reputable optician. Went to some opticians on the Upper East and West sides and was quoted between $750 and $850 for the lenses alone Saw other helpers loved this place, so went out of my way to go there with an old pair of frames. Great value for quality lenses in a sea of overpriced optical stores trying to upsell you. Spent hundreds on frame+lenses and then spent $80 on frames+lens from an online discount store -- shockingly similar success for glasses on opposite ends of the spectrum. Then I went to 88 Optical to upgrade my new prescription in old frames that I brought in ($80 for lenses with blue-blocking coating), which have been my favorite glasses to use out of all my purchases. My eyes didn't need an "adjustment" period and they don't get strained. Also, I replaced lenses without a prescription in my favorite sunglasses -- recommend 88 Optical for all of it. Large selection of frames here, as well. No-nonsense and focused on efficiency rather than holding your hand. Best to come in knowing what you want. read more

To start with, let's get the name straight: it's "Optical 88", not what is listed. It's a fantastic place. The optometrists give a good eye exam. (My experiences with whomever does the eye exam for ophthalmologists is generally quite negative.) They provide excellent service, are highly skilled, friendly, and very polite. Came in on President's day. No wait surprisingly for me, so I lucked out I feel. 1. Repairs Need to replace a screw on pair of sunglasses and needed to fix bent metal for eye glasses Was NOT expecting it to be a free service and to be literally under 5 minutes. Guy there was very efficient, helpful and informative about the reality of the longevity of the bent glasses. (I deff regret getting a high end brand and will def avoid name brands for plastic frames in future- i didnt get my glasses from here) 2. Was hoping they offered strabismus services but unfortunately they dont have the equipment. No hassle, no grilling me if I was an existing customer. I broke two glasses and didnt want to buy a new one so I've been trying to fix them. Went to a place by Union square and they immediately told me they cant fix my glasses. One of the customers overheard our conversation and suggested I check out optical 88. On my way here, my Uber driver also recommended optical 88 so I had my hopes up. Purchased new Gentle Monster glasses and the employees recommended coming to 88 Optical to get them fitted with my prescription (they told me it would be $80) The actual cost for high index (1.67) lenses in 2019 is $160. If you want to save a little more you could pay $120 for 1.60 index lenses, but the standard in the current market is 1.67 so they have been marketing order lenses as their "high index lenses". If you want even thinner lenses, they will charge $260 for 1.74 high index lenses. (With anti glare and anti scratch coating) In terms of the quality, it's okay. I'm a little skeptical of whether or not I was given the 1.67 vs 1.60 but I guess I'd just have to trust them. read more

When I went to get my eyes rechecked, I simply asked the eye doctor if there was any way my prescription could get better and before I even finished asking she said in a rude tone, "NO." She didn't even offer any preventive measures on not getting even worse eyesight. Did not even try to communicate with me. The staff behind the case was also not nice. Pricey for what I'm used to (on public health insurance) because I'm generally an online glasses kind of gal, but COME HERE IF YOU JUST BROKE OR LOST YOUR GLASSES AND NEED SAME-DAY CUTTING OR LENS FITTING. This is like, my to-go emergency optician if I break or lose my glasses (which has happened to me 6-7 times in the last 12 years, yay for being autistic!). They also have nice frames if you're willing to pay more. In 2017, I came here after I lost my glasses. I am a tutor, work in EMS, need to drive, and basically can't be walking around blind while I wait for glasses to arrive to some other store or from an online service. (I also had ordered replacements online.) Their frames weren't cheap but and they don't accept Medicaid but I was in desperate need. They did same-day cutting for me for free, right before closing, and I'll never forget how grateful I was to have a pair of working glasses in my hand. They made a big show of how much they could custom-cut the lenses to match my Asian features and ensure that the "sweet spot of focus" matched my face shape, as opposed to online glass orders which are not able to do this. This turned out to be noticeably true, but not enough to dissuade me from ordering online for "nicer" frames (because I'm on public health insurance, okay?). In 2018, I also came here a second time to have lenses cut into a new frame. I'll still always love the second pair of frames I got from them from yet another emergency glass cutting. (Alas, I lost them a few months ago!) When I am in a better financial situation, I'm considering coming here to fit online polycarbonate lenses into an extremely impact-resistant and flexible pair of frames as currently, my frames tend to break before the lenses do. read more

Not only are they speedy and half the price of anywhere else when it comes to lenses, they are magicians when it comes to repairing frames. There's nothing these guys can't do.
