It took me two months of searching a variety of different locations before I found Westway, and I'd do it again to find such a wonderful, openminded, professional, friendly, and welcoming boutique shop. I was given no hassle when I arrived with a script in hand and only needing glasses. They were the only shop from my multi-month search that had even one pair I was willing to consider wearing for the next year, let alone the three I found. The prices are great. Even if you were paying out of pocket, Westway prices things reasonably. Their OOP price for the glasses (with lens treatment add-ons) I chose was equal to what I've paid at other places after all the insurance coverages and discounts were calculated. Oscar never once pressured me with an upsell to get a second pair of glasses or sunglasses, and he gave really solid recommendations after quickly catching on to my sense of style. And my finished glasses were ready in less than a week! As if that weren't enough, Oscar effortlessly passed the test I do every time I shop for glasses. I go to the women's section first. I wait for someone to redirect me to the men's section. I say something like, "You never know what you'll find...", and I await their response. Oscar's? "Ok!" I went to Westway Vision to get a new prescription for glasses and contact lenses. Overall, the experience was very pleasant. Looks like a mom-and-pop shop where everything is manual and written on paper but you'll get a very welcoming feel as you step in. Dr Tanzil was very thorough during the eye test, and Fran was very patient in answering all my questions about costs and options. Cost of glasses seemed reasonable to me but this cost varies depending on vision insurance. They have a two week trial for contact lenses, and I'll probably go back to them to get my contact lenses. read more

I don't know how this place gets such good ratings. I was just there for an eye exam and it was awful. The eye doctor acted like he was interrogating me. He was going so fast through questions about me that I could barely keep up. Guessing he was ready to go home. When he asked me about family history I said that my grandmother had cataracts. He then asked if she took eye drops every day (my granny died 15 year ago so how would I know that?). When I said I don't know, he quickly said oh she must have had surgery for glaucoma then. Like what?? I told you she had cataracts, why don't you believe me? He then took a look at my contacts and said I have astigmatism. I said yes I do. He said you said no to having it early. Oh my god, really you are going to correct me like that, it was rude and unnecessary. We then began the eye test. He started with a very blurry set of letters and wanted me to let him know when it got sharper. I really couldn't tell when it was getting sharper so I said I didn't know. He was like just tell me when it's getting sharper. I again said I don't know. I was really trying guys. I can't remember what he said after that but he was stuck on this part of the test that wasn't working for me so why wouldn't he just move on? Finally I asked if he wanted me to run home and get my glasses and contact information as he seemed to really need that (I've not had that info with me many times to other eye docs and it hasn't been an issue). He thought that would be a good idea. I walked out and half way through my walk called and canceled. I think it was the eye doctor speaking. All he could say was "if that's what you want". Dr. Oscar Araya is the best eye doctor I have ever been to. Efficient and feels like he is respecting your time without rushing you, but also thorough and patient. You can tell he knows what he is doing and is also very knowledgeable and cares for his patients. The staff there is also incredibly kind and helpful. Even though my work office is no longer near this business, I'll continue to make the trek uptown to this office because I cannot imagine going to another eye doctor. read more

i live in Manhattan & this is THE best place to come to get glasses or contacts. Fran, Oscar & the Dr are the most honest, easy-going, informative yet not pushy..... The eye exam is primo & more accurate than others i've gotten. I came here in 2017, went somewhere else last year & this year i'm back after checking 7 other places. They really are amazing & there's a reason they've survived here so long. I never write reviews, but in this situation, I can't not. It's my first time in NYC and we are celebrating my birthday. Our second day of a week long trip, we are at breakfast and.....my contact rips. Just one. I have no spares. I don't have my glasses. I am as blind as a bat. I am trying to think quickly, as I know I don't have long until this causes me a migraine. We quickly find an optical place and I explain my predicament. The lady rudely tells me they cannot help me unless I order a whole box of contacts. I call another optical place. They cannot help me until the doctor can see me on Monday. I am literally standing in the street starting to cry when, thank goodness, I find Westway. Not only did they help me get my contact replaced, but they were so, so kind and friendly! New Yorkers have a bad reputation in the Midwest where I'm from as being rude and unhelpful. I'm here to tell you this could not have been further from the truth with this crew. I will probably never see any of them again, but I have to let you (and them!) know that, if I lived here, their customer service and kindness alone would have earned them a lifetime customer today. I wish every doctor was as thorough, courteous, and accomodating as Dr. Tanzil, Fran, and the other guy whose name I don't remember (sorry other guy) !! Beyond the standard eye appointment, Westway once saw me with an hours notice for an irritating pressure which turned out to be a small infection! Dr. Tanzil provided me with a consultation, a box of drops, and I was out the door. No Charge :) Now, I don't flatter myself that my personality is particularly memorable, and yet every time I call Fran knows who I am and how long it's been since I've been in for an appointment. This place came recommended to me by a former co-worker, and I back it. Fran doesn't seem to work here anymore (alas), but Dr. Tanzil, though brusque, is great. He's everything I could want in a doctor: fast, comprehensive, and pretty funny. I've been happy with both pairs of glasses I've bought here, and both of them cost me less than $10 (thanks, insurance!). You might experience a bit of up-selling on the frames, but just be firm. I decided to come here because it was right around the corner from my apartment and it also takes my insurance, but more importantly because of the great reviews I read on YELP. Westway is not impressive from the outside, but don't let that deter you! While it may not have as wide a selection of frames as the bigger chains, there are still more than enough brands and designs from you to choose from and the prices are very affordable. Fran has an encyclopedic knowledge of the styles and colors and even if they don't have something in stock, she can order it for you or show you something similar. She is helpful, friendly and puts you at ease immediately and does not try to upsell you (big plus!). Some people may find Dr. Tanzil 'brusque' but he was professional and efficient and my eye examination took just 15 minutes. I was nervous because I had not had my eyes checked in a while, but he reassured me after the exams. I did end up getting super thin lens with anti-glare coating because of my high index, but with my insurance I only paid $203 out of pocket ($20 for frames, top-up $102 for lens and $71 for coating, $10 for eye exam co-pay) which was very reasonable considering the same pair would have cost upwards of $500 without insurance! I highly recommend Westway Optical and would definitely come back again :) read more

This place is wonderful. My contact lens prescription had expired and I was due to buy new lenses and new glasses (my current glasses are circa 2006 and I'm blind as a bat in them). I went searching for a good optometrist near my apartment, and came across Westway Vision. Dr. Tanzil is friendly and efficient, and definitely a good doctor. (I was a bit shocked by the air puff test though. That one is new on me.) Fran at the front desk is marvelous; she helped me pick out two terrific pairs of glasses, and we had a lot of fun doing so! They didn't accept my insurance (BCBS) but nothing cost more than I expected. The eye exam cost $130 and I got a months' worth of free contacts (score!). The frames ran between $165-195 and they had a deal on lenses - $50 off each set, so I think each set of lenses was something like $115. The whole thing ran me $740 out of pocket; pricey but worth it to me to support a nice shop run by nice people in my neighborhood! read more

Came here for my yearly vision exam (I mostly wear contacts but also get a glasses prescription). Great exam and prescription for both contacts and glasses is perfect. I'll be making this my regular optometrist! I didn't end up purchasing glasses from here because I wanted to try some WP's, but I did spend about 30 minutes looking at their glasses and trying a bunch on. The guy behind the counter was extremely helpful and knew what kinds of glasses would go well with my face type. I never write on Yelp but I had such a great experience that I cant help myself. I came with my girlfriend for eye exams for us, and quickly met Fran, Dr Tanzil and Dr. Theresa (Dr. Tanzil's wife...Don't think she actually works there, but incredibly nice person!). We made some friendly conversation then went in for our respective check-ups. I was given a clean bill of health, and told my prescription was so small that they couldn't in good conscience prescribe me glasses, except for night driving (funny enough that's what I was contemplating getting glasses for in the first place). I decided to see what they had, so Fran played around with some frames and found a few pairs that she thought would look good for me. The woman has amazing taste because I completely agreed with all of her choices! As for my girlfriend, she got some free samples of contacts and some other stuff and left super happy! Definitely coming back, I was telling my mother about my experience at Westway and I think I convinced her to get glasses there in the process. read more

They're nice here. Very thorough, efficient and a bit brusque (Dr. Tanzil), but I don't really care because I'm like that sometimes. I don't like doctors that take too much time, or those who don't take any time at all. He was a good mix of both for me. I LIKE doctors that are more straightforward and less wishy-washy. He also made sure to check my eyes multiple times... although I kept flubbing on my eye test, I think I might have been nervous to perform at my very best and ended up not relaxing my eyes. (I hate failing at anything). Answered all my questions well, and although I felt a slight bit of sales pressure, I have come to expect that from every store, and it didn't deter me. Their selection of glasses are thankfully not designer ones at $300+, but you have to watch out, because the nicest ones can be really expensive, regardless of name. Westway Vision is amazing, because they provided the best customer service I've ever gotten at an optical store . Fran is extremely attentive and knows exactly what you want and what looks good on your face. The only downside is that because the store is so small, they don't have the biggest selection (I wanted Ray Ban glasses and they only had 2-3 to choose from). I was about to go to another store to get the ones I wanted when I decided to price check from Westway anyway for having it shipped in. It was $75 cheaper! Overall I got the perfect glasses shipped to me within a few days, and after insurance it only came out to $15. Best. Deal. Ever. read more

I went to Westway Vision on a recommendation from a co-worker after putting off getting my eyes checked and new frames for months. I have had several mediocre and a couple of bad experiences with national chains and didn't want to go through that again. I was really pleased with Westway Vision. First, I was seen immediately by Dr. Tanzil, who like the reviewing below said, is brusque, but really good and nice. After finding out that apart from my vision, my eyes were in great shape, I went to pick out some frames. I wish I knew the name of the women working the counter, because she was amazing. I showed her my eight year old frames and told her I was looking for something similar, but bigger and off she went. Since I have a very small face, it was harder to find glasses that fit me well, but she had a very good knowledge of her inventory and knew where to look. She also scrutinized the frames to make sure they fit my face properly. I didn't experience any up selling in the frames, but she did suggest the glare-free lenses. At $140 I was skeptical, but once I saw the difference, plus the insurance discount, I was sold. This place is friendly and has great customer service. Additionally, the exam was only $45 without insurance (I only have "discounts). Lastly, my new glasses will be ready on Thursday! That's the fastest I've ever had new lenses put in, on top of new glasses! I definitely recommend Westway Vision. read more

Contrary to so many other reviewers here, my experience with the only optometrist at Westway was a true nightmare. Because of my poor vision (myopic, astigmatic, & bad mid-range), it has always taken longer than usual for doctors to find lenses that allow me to see clearly, without headaches & dizziness. Despite warning him of my history before we started -- and even offering to pay more for the fitting -- the doctor became increasingly frustrated because none of the lens combinations he tried was acceptable. He blamed me repeatedly for not answering all of his questions "with a simple A or B". (My answer would commonly be that lens A allowed me to read more letters on the eye chart, but that they looked too blurry. Lens B was much sharper but I couldn't make out some of the letters.) As hIs frustration turned to anger, I told him I would have to leave because he was becoming abusive. He apologized and said that he knew he could become impatient & would control himself better. (Having seen much more skilled optometrists in past years, it was obvious to me that he was not competent enough to "balance" the corrections for astigmatism and myopia to arrive at an appropriate fitting for me -- and was taking out his frustration on me.) We finally finished the eye exam, even though I was not comfortable with the final result. I eventually decided not to have the Rx filled because I did not want to have contact with this mean-spirited, out of control, and marginally competent doctor again. Kudos to the rest of the staff -- especially Fran -- who were incredibly helpful, and even went out of their way to repair my old glasses which had broken. CONCLUSION: If your eyes are easy to fit for lenses, you'll probably be satisfied with the optometrist and with Westway. The prices are quite reasonable. ...... However, if you need a more thorough fitting, complicated prescription, competent doctor, or wider range of frame choices, STAY AWAY. This is assembly-line optometry, with a touch of cruelty if your problem requires any extra time. read more
