I've walked passed this appealing Village shop for years and always smile at the sign in the window: "We put lenses into any frame." It was only recently I looked at my late dad's round wire-rimmed frames from the Truman era, which I first discovered among my widowed mom's keepsakes in 1969 and had blue John Lennon-esque lenses put in, and decided several outgrown prescriptions later that it was time again for lenses, but I did not want my luck to run out on the handling of these sentimentally priceless specs, which I have both written an essay about and done an oil painting of, tited "Legacy." My aha moment arrived--the shop with the sign in the window! Michael, owner of 20/20 on E. 8th Street, is a rare breed: an independent small-business owner in a time of corporate chains, of the sort we New Yorkers remember from the last millennium and miss dearly. I instinctively knew I could trust him, a guy who "knows his onions," to handle the precious cargo with care. And because I did not intend to use them daily, and didn't want to spring for the high cost of progressive lenses like I have in my everyday glasses, he suggested I simply put in distance lenses and remove Dad's glasses for reading. Problem solved for a mere $95. And in 24 hours I picked them up. So he's not only reasonable, and meticulous--he detailed the rims and removed years of schmutz--Michael is quick too, as well as a humorous and an overall mensch, the sort of NYC craftsman/shopkeeper we all recall and wish we had more of. When I put on my father's glasses, something special happens, a sort of alchemy, so, thank you, Michael of 20/20, for restoring my faith in "shop local" and maintaining a true Village/village feel.

It's taken me way too long to write this review. This store is an gem. 35 years in the same location. You don't find places like this anymore. I want Michael (the owner) to pick out every pair of glasses I buy from now going forward. He has a talent for finding the perfect pair for your taste, face, and budget. He really considers the lines of your face, the shape and size of your head, your hair color, etc to make a good fit. **It feels like the difference between getting a perfectly tailored suit vs going to Men's Warehouse.** The glasses in stock are all gorgeous pieces, most handmade and imported from other countries. He also keeps a large collection of vintage frames on hand. All are really affordable (except for the rare, one of a kind collectors items.) I get complimented on my glasses all the time, across 4 different states and down south too. But more importantly, they make me feel absolutely fabulous and like a complete badass. Thank you Michael! Thank you Barry! Cheers from Virginia!

I don't know what's up with all the terrible reviews of this place, but I had a great experience. I walked in because they took my UFT insurance and looked like they had some interesting frames in the window. I already had my prescription and just needed frames and lenses. The guy working there let me try on about 30 pairs and first directed me to try on the pairs that were fully covered by my insurance. I ended up with a pair of Christopher Cloos. I went in on a Saturday and got them back that Monday. Progressive lenses take longer, he told me. They carry mostly small or independent designers--you won't find Gucci here--so you'll walk out with a bit more of a unique look.

    Look great! I do!

Stopped by after work (super grateful they have time slots for 6pm)- Dr. Stoica was very professional and personable, and took time to explain how my eyes are doing. She provided me with a referral to another specialist who could help me with an eye condition that's been on the horizon (like that hazy little house you see during the eye exam...!), so will hit them up next on my journey to not so terrible vision. Just great customer service across the board- if you're looking for an optometrist/glasses/contact lenses/a vision test for the DMV so they stop sending you guilt inducing reminder emails, look no further.

I was given no hassle when I arrived with a script in hand and only needing glasses. They were the only shop from my multi-month search that had even one pair I was willing to consider wearing for the next year, let alone the three I found. The prices are great. Even if you were paying out of pocket, Westway prices things reasonably. Their OOP price for the glasses (with lens treatment add-ons) I chose was equal to what I've paid at other places after all the insurance coverages and discounts were calculated. Oscar never once pressured me with an upsell to get a second pair of glasses or sunglasses, and he gave really solid recommendations after quickly catching on to my sense of style. And my finished glasses were ready in less than a week! As if that weren't enough, Oscar effortlessly passed the test I do every time I shop for glasses. I go to the women's section first. I wait for someone to redirect me to the men's section. I say something like, "You never know what you'll find...", and I await their response. Oscar's? "Ok!" And he chilled behind the counter until I was ready. Many thanks to the team at Westway for nurturing such an inclusive and safe medical and retail environment. Spread the word, consider bringing them your business, and help keep this gem serving customers for years and years to come.

If you need glasses and can get to this part of Manhattan, the only place to be a patient and a client is Kips Bay Optical. From the truly evaluative, real time spent, thorough, thoughtful, and all questions answered you leave with no stress or agita (Italian for heartburn and anxiety) appointments with Dr. Soto, to the honest recommendations regarding vision insurance (because not everyone's policy includes that (ahem, Anthem)), to the wide ranging in styles and price choice of frames, it is truly a pleasure to be a patient at Kips Bay Optical. Let it be said that eyeglasses, like jewelry, is an emotional purchase. When my prescription changed and I needed to get new near-sighted lenses, Paul and Stephany were as patient and honest with me as the best bespoke personal shoppers as I tried on easily 20 pair. She's extraordinarily patient, professional, knowledgeable, insightful, pragmatic, thoughtful and fun. The first time I visited her shop, I wasn't even looking for new glasses. I was accompanying my wife, who'd been referred by a co-worker. It was while listening to Charlotte work through options with my wife that I began wondering if I should purchase new glasses, myself. She spoke so naturally about eyeglasses beyond function, but as accessories, an expression of personal style. She went on to speak about the quality of lenses, and more. It was a bit of a master class. It didn't matter how many frames my wife tried on, Charlotte's patience never wavered. It wasn't long before I began asking to try different frames, myself. With my wife satisfied with her very stylish choice, I kept vacillating between two pairs of frames, one of which I preferred, the cost of which was more than I would normally pay for eyeglasses. We left it at that - no decision. My wife made her purchase and we left. Days later, with Charlotte's philosophy of eyeglasses as accessories and an expression of personal style ingrained in my mind, I returned to purchase the more expensive option. I'm very happy with them, and have since returned and purchased yet another style. Prior to working with Charlotte, I've never even thought of having more than one pair of glasses. Even if you weren't thinking of purchasing new eyeglasses, visit Charlotte Jones Opticians. You'll learn what a good optician is all about, and know exactly where to go when you're ready.
