Ikura sashimi and the crazy hamachi roll.
    Heather M.

The sushi is good, honestly I was just going to get ikura because it's my favorite, but I love hamachi as well so I tried the crazy hamachi roll. It was ok, the hamachi/yellowtail was fresh and delicious. The seaweed was a bit gooey, and the furikake was a little overpowering the delicate fish I would forgo any of that, avocado would be better than the onions as well, they're slightly overpowering the fish. The mango was excellent actually, like a half a mango thrown in there, not easy to eat with the sushi itself because of the size it falls off I'd make sliced mango instead, maybe just wrap it in mango. I made my own wasabi honey to go with it. Was pretty good. I would definitely do the ikura again, honestly I would just eat a giant bowl of it if I could order it. . I would probably have gotten the negihama sashimi but I was hoping for a fusion of flavor with the hamachi roll, it's very delicate and buttery and I do think it could be done better but it was the best sushi Ive had around here. Actually fresh and tender.

BLUF:. Tasty food, but in a noisy place Four of us went on a Friday evening. Started out with some steamed dumplings and crab Rangoon. Both very tasty. Then two pieces of tako (octopus) sushi. The octopus was good, but placed on a skimpy portion of rice and not assembled well. Fir enterees:. Mooshu pork, tasty. Shrimp Lo Mein, excellent. 9 Dragons seafood XO, also excellent. Cocktail with dinner was mediocre, tasted like a weak pour. Water glasses were never refilled. I'd go back if I was at the casino because the food is good. But it's quite noisy, and they need a little more attention to detail

Hour wait..... They simply don't care about customers! Not sure I understand why wait when at least 10 tables are empty! Just close your doors Hollywood!

This Chinese restaurant inside a casino in Charles Town, WV offers authentic Chinese food. For dinner my hubby and I had broiled Chilean sea bass, Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce, and 5 Spice Beef Brisket with Tofu. Hot tea was complimentary and served in cast iron infuser teapot. The Chilean sea bass was my favorite among the 3 dishes we tried. It's tender and flaky with a light gingerly taste and subtle onion flavor combined with bright, crisp greenness from the scallions. It was delicious! Our server/waitress was very attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant for great food and service!

Good sushi and fast service. The only complaint was they accidentally doubled my order and then expected me to pay for it. Lol

Kanpai is in a prime place along Rockville Pike, but depending on when you go you may find easy parking. (If you're not bothered about where to park, ignore what I just said.) Out front there's something that looks like a tuk-tuk or rickshaw. Tbh, don't know if it's theirs or the business next door. The restaurant itself is clean and elegant. Also, not as loud as some Korean BBQs (thinking of KPOT off of Randolph Rd), which is important if you don't like being overwhelmed by everyone else's noise. That is one big '+' in Kanpai's favor. The waiter was cool and very helpful. Because of him I now know what the thin meat slices are meant for (which is for the soup), before then I had no clue. The food itself is good. Like, why wouldn't it be? I actually prefer the shabu-shabu (soup), makes me wish I knew how to do that myself so I wouldn't have to go out as much. Yes, the grill meats were great, as was the kimchi. These places are not cheap, but it was enjoyable while I was there. If you're not in a rush you can go a few doors down afterward to an import store selling everything from K-chips to puzzle-kits. So I would say...take your time. But don't warm your seats for more than 90 minutes, as Korean BBQs tend to kick people out (nicely, nicely) if one overstays. P.S. I'm sure they have some great drinks there, but even if I wanted to I couldn't loiter. That's what Bethesda is for. (Or at least how it used to be.)

I liked the addition of panko breadcrumbs for crunch, but I wish the imitation crab meat had been shredded more finely for better texture. For my entree, I ordered the Spicy Basil Crispy Duck (added $1 for Thai spicy). They definitely delivered on the spicy level, but the duck itself was not crispy. It came with rice and bell peppers and basil. The sushi tasted fresh, which was good. Service could use some improvement. We had to ask for small bowls for soy sauce, and when we requested a dessert menu to celebrate the birthday, we were told the kitchen had already closed. It would have been nice if our server had given us a heads up before the kitchen closed. The ambiance is cozy. It almost feels like dining in someone's house. They had Halloween decorations up and murals of historic Frederick painted on the walls. They also have a private parking lot, which made it convenient. Overall, food was good, but a little more attentiveness from the staff would've made the experience even better.

One of the highlights of the night was meeting the owner, Jason. We bonded over our shared Cantonese backgrounds and even got to meet his aunt, who was visiting from California and happened to be sitting next to us. It made the whole experience feel incredibly welcoming and personal. We ordered the Dynamite Roll, which was a solid choice with 8 generous pieces, and the Szechuan spicy wontons, which were juicy with just the right amount of heat. If you visit, definitely grab a seat at the bar. The bartenders are friendly, engaging, and really add to the experience. We were treated to a complimentary shot of Jäger with Jason and even got to sample their Lychee Pearl cocktail because the bartender had made an extra. The cocktails really stood out. Instead of masking everything with sugary juices, they use extracts and creative techniques to build balanced drinks that complement the flavors beautifully. Jason also mentioned that their cocktail specials change every month, so we already told him we'll be back regularly to see what new creations he comes up with.

Her verdict: Modern Asia's was "OK", and she told me I could eat the leftovers for my lunch. I did. My verdict was the same: OK, but nothing to write home to Mother about. (My comparison, BTW, is to a restaurant we enjoyed in Ithaca New York that made Kung Pao with peppers that would flay your face from the inside if you dared to eat one. Modern Asia's didn't even tickle, making it a let down). I ordered Seafood Combination Chinese Yellow Curry, a new dish for me. It was yummy. Described as one-pepper spicy on the menu, it had less heat than the Kung Pao, but the curry sauce had layers of flavor. It featured shrimp, scallops, and calmari plus a wonderful mix of peppers, onions, and other veg. All were nicely (crisply) cooked, even taking into account the Door Dash delivery time. I really enjoyed it. Next time I may ask for a bit more heat, but as it is, I hoovered up every morsel. Try it - you'll like it!
