My go to spot for Pho. It always quiet and has a great ambiance. A hidden gem for sure!

Well the Vietnamese food pickings in this region are pretty slim, but I have to say that the beef phô here is very good. It is better than several phô restaurants I have been to in Montgomery county. The seating was quick, and the service was great, refilling my water thrice. There was a good portion of meat in the soup, all the side condiments (mint leaves, bean sprouts, lime, hot peppers & sirracha sauce) were all well portioned & very fresh. Most importantly the noodles were at the perfect consistency. To me, there is nothing worse than overly done soft noodles. All in all a very good meal, at a good price in a cozy quiet & small (dozen or so tables) restaurant. I see myself coming back regularly & exploring the rest of the menu. read more

TL;DR: Average Americanized Asian-inspired food; quality control is a bit spotty, but the people mean well. When She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO) and I were looking for a decent Chinese place west of Leesburg, we happened across the Yelp listing for this place and decided to give it a whirl. The restaurant is a storefront in a somewhat run-down section of Martinsburg, but is clearly marked and visible from the street. It too seems very grey and tired on the outside, but the inside was clean and well-kept. We were seated promptly, and menus and tea/water were quickly provided. The menu contains a mix of Asian foods from different areas, and is unexpectedly large for a place this size. We eventually settled on pineapple fried rice with chicken and kung pao chicken (extra spicy), with soup. Here's where some wires got crossed: SWMBO had ordered egg-drop soup and I had hot-and-sour soup. We both got hot-and-sour, but SWMBO didn't want to make a fuss, so we dug in. The hot-and-sour was OK: no major fails, but it wasn't the best I've ever had either. The bowls were fairly large, so we felt like we got our money's worth. Our entrees arrived about half-way through the soup. The kung pao was a little burned, and I suppose "extra spicy" in Martinsburg is scaled for West Virgina tastes, aka tame -- if this was hot, I'd die of boredom with the usual spice level. Even with the burned bits and tame spicy level, the dish was fairly flavorful, nothing special but not horrible. SWMBO's pineapple rice was a bit sticky; not a lot of pineapple, but pretty much as advertised. They seemed to be good about extra rice on request, and fortune cookies were included. Service was personable and reasonably alert; no major issues other than the mixup with the soup, and the check came quickly. Price was about $25 for two; I guess Chinese is a bit exotic for WV, so it's a little above what you'd expect for Chinese, but not excessively so. Overall, it's not the best Chinese I've ever had, but it wasn't horrible. I probably wouldn't object to a return visit. read more

So this place is an absolute gem. Everything from the ambiance of the restaurant to the food feels like home. Her food ranges from traditional Vietnamese to your average Chinese takeout. However, the thing I keep coming back here for, is her pho. I have tasted pho from many restaurants, in wv, in Maryland, in virginia, etc. and I have yet to find anything comparable to how this restaurant makes their pho. It's served in a gigantic bowl and you are given all of the toppings to make your soup delicious. This is by far the best pho I've tasted. The broth is incredible and the broth alone could probably cure you of the flu/cold on its own. She uses great cuts of meat to put in the beef combo pho including brisket, tripe, eye round, and meatballs. The Vietnamese and noodle soup dishes seem to shine here. I had the pork chop with spring roll over vermicelli and it was great. Flavor you don't find elsewhere in this area. Tofu with veggies dish was okay. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing spectacular about it. Just average. Service was tough - seemed like one woman was trying to do three jobs. Food came out slower than we would have liked and drinks not refilled quickly. She was just too busy! We'll be back for sure when we're in the area! read more

We were looking for Vietnamese Pho soup and this is probably the only place in Martinsburg that offers it. Agreed, we showed up at 2 PM and just one other table occupied and one person came in for carry out, but the food was better than average. I had the chicken pho soup and wife had the seafood combo. That had imitation crabmeat (she's OK with that, I'm not). Her noodles and mine were both supposed to be rice (whitish-clear). I got the rice noodles, she got something else (yellowish, skinny, not flat wide egg noodles that they offer). The spring rolls were good-sized. I only finished half the soup (about 32-oz portion) and wife finished less. Only problem is if you let noodles sit they soak up water and don't have the same texture and flavor a few hours later... We'll be back and try out some of the Chinese offerings, too. read more

Diamond in the rough for Martinsburg. We always get the Pho. The beef pho ia excellent you can clearly taste the lemon grass and star anise. Spring rolls are good too. A little pricy for Martinsburg but average for the general region. Pad thai was good, only had lunch. Owner nice, they do a lot of take out. read more

The shrimp toast has no shrimp in it, only pork. It was so salty and not the shrimp I paid for. The wonton soup was made with unfiltered Martinsburg water, smelling and tasting like sulfur. Wow. What a tasteful little gem. I am a huge fan of hole in the wall 'Chinese' restaurants. As I get older, I have come to recognize that the blanched out ingredients in many cases have likely lost their nutritional value, but I can't help myself. I love the genre. This place was exceptional and a cut above the rest. Tasteful diner decor in the appropriate theme. Pleasant inside. The food was of a better quality ingredient. Had the king pao chicken. Could have had more fire, but real chicken, and the vegetables were nicely caramelized - especially the red and green peppers & onion. Broccoli and garlic sauce, with crispy vegetables, baby corn, carrot and bamboo shoot. Spring rolls were nicely done with mushroom bamboo shoot and cabbage. Would have preferred the skin a little crispier and less spongy. But folks, I would order it all over again, and there were no leftovers. As hole in the wall family owned dining goes, this was an easy and solid five. I'll stop by again on a future road trip. read more

This place was not good at all! I ordered wonton soup (way too salty) and boneless spare ribs with shrimp fried rice. I specifically asked for no bean sprouts but they put them in anyway. Very greasy food and probably loaded with MSG! Stay away! read more

This place has the best Asian food in Martinsburg. I ordered the pho, lemongrass beef, and crab rangoons. The pho was delicious the first night and just as good when I heated up the leftovers. The lemongrass beef was nice and fresh tasting. The crab rangoons were savory instead of the sweet ones some places make. Very good and I will definitely be going back! read more

Easily my favorite restaurant in the eastern panhandle & one of the best places to eat in Martinsburg. Like previous commenters stated, this is a hidden gem - it is in a strip mall that has seen better days & has a common strip mall chinese restaurant ends but once you are inside it is warm and cozy. The owner is always working and she will always stop to talk to you for a little. If you come back and become a regular she will remember your order the minute she sees you. Very friendly and welcoming Everything I've eaten here has been delicious: pho, pad thai, and their general tso's chicken are personal favorites. Hands down my favorite thing to get here is their goi cuon (vietnamese spring rolls), they are to die for. You cannot skip this appetizer. read more

Don't let the name put you off! They have Vietnamese food as well. Located on Winchester Avenue next to Whale of a Wash, Empire China is an unexpected treasure. I went in to get take out several weeks ago and it was empty. The lone woman (likely the owner) greeted me warmly and took my order. While I waited, several families arrived and were greeted with equal warmth. After about 15 minutes, my food was ready. I took it home, and enjoyed a hearty dinner of pho and spring rolls. The only downside is that they don't have my favorite pho (Pho Tai Nam). I opted for the Pho Bo Vien and was not disappointed. read more

Definitely one of the best Asian restaurants in town! Visiting from San Francisco, where Chinese/Vietnamese foods surrounds me everywhere, I was surprised to see Empire China live up to the caliber that we have here on the West Coast. What's even better is how affordable and high quality the food is! I came here with a few of my folks and got the Pho and we all agree that it's as good as the ones from Vietnam (if not better). I would also recommend getting the traditional Vietnamese coffee. There's actually a certain way to drink it, so be afraid to ask! And don't worry, the customer service is PHO-nomenal. Kieu and the workers there were so sweet and attentive to our requests. I think what makes this place unique is its variety of food! I was surprised to see so many different dishes on the menu!!! This place used to be delicious. Their standards have gone down and I am sick now. We ordered a feast well over 1/2 of the food is old... It smells old! This is the second time. Th first time I called and the owner wanted to argue with me that the food wasn't old... I told her I am not calling for a refund. I was calling to tell her the food is old. Months go by and I try to order again. Now I am so sick. We ordered orange chicken, pad thai , combo fried rice, dumplings, and sweet donuts. The dumplings were not fully cooked and pretty much all dough. The Orange chicken was not spicy at all. The fried rice smelled bad and tasted funny. The pad thai was not good at all. The sweet donuts were over cooked. We only ate the orange chicken and spent almost 50$. It was painful to through a box of food away but not as painful as how sick I felt after just tasting the food. read more

We stopped by on the way from Harrisonburg, Virginia to Hershey Park. My kids love Vietnamese food so my wife used Yelp and found the Empire China based on the reviews (she would normally be pretty skeptical of a restaurant that cooks more than one cuisine). It's a couple minutes drive to I-81 and although it looks a bit run down on the outside the inside is much nicer. My my wife got a Vietnamese dry noodle dish, my daughter got pho, my son got a couple spring rolls, and I got Vietnamese seafood soup with egg noodles. All the food was really good, and a lot better than many purely Vietnamese restaurants we have eaten at. The service was very friendly, and we especially appreciated how nice the waitress was to our son, who is mentally disabled. The prices were a couple dollars higher than than they would be for similar portions around Harrisonburg, VA (as I recall the basic beef pho was $10 and the other entrees were $12), but it's certainly par for the course for being somewhat close to DC. read more
