A Vietnamese friend from Vietnam said that this was her favorite Vietnamese restaurant in New Orleans and better than Vietnamese food in Vietnam. Seriously?? I haven't been to Vietnam and could not believe the hyperbole until I went. It is the best Vietnamese food I have ever eaten. I had the Bahn Xeo, Bo Nuong VI (BBQ beef similar to Korean BBQ but with very fresh basil, mint, cilantro, carrots and radish that you roll yourself with the beef on circular rice paper) and deep fried tilapia with ginger and mango. Visited this place three times in seven days in New Orleans. The food is well done and more choices than most of the Vietnamese restaurants in the DC metro region. Herbs are well picked with few flaws. Went to Pho Orchid which was ok, but I had some billing issues where they said a posted price was incorrect and charged me more. Banh Xeo-mmmm, so delicate and crisp. This is my new love. We also got steamed, pork dumplings that I thought tasted watery but the BF liked them so I happily ate the banh xeo and relinquished the rest of the dumplings to him. I wanted pho but I also wanted to try something new so I got the quail. It was fine but just plain roasted quail, which had me wanting the more complex riot of flavors in pho. But then if had ordered the pho, I would have still been wondering about the quail! I'm so difficult sometimes. We also got the ribs in fish sauce (Dorothy's recommendation), really tasty, the sauce is kind of on the sweet side but mix it up with greens and it is oh so good. Lemon grass beef vermicelli was fabulous. Our server was really sweet and attentive. It was REALLY cold in there, everyone was wearing winter jackets. But still very worth the drive to the West Bank and if you're still hungry, which I doubt, stop at Taqueria Sanchez right across the way! read more

I had the privilege of eating at Hoa Hong during a work trip to New Orleans. And man, I'm so glad that we did because it was DE-EE- LI-CIOUS! The Vietnamese hot and sour fish soup was the best I've ever had! I had a food-gasm over this soup... Must replicate it somehow at home (since Atlanta's restaurants aren't as good as this version). We also had beef, shrimp, and squid on hot plate. This was something new that I've not had before. It reminded me of Korean BBQ, but differently flavored. It was also so so good. Sigh... I'VE BEEN COMING HERE SINCE I WAS A CHILD! now, that i live in california, i have to say, looking back-- this is one of my favorite places to eat in new orleans. I have child hood memories of the CANH CHUA (aka tom yum soup or sour fish soup) here. the sour taste is just the right amount of tangy and the fish is cooked to a soft delight. my parents would always bring friends from out of town to this restaurant. it was always satisfying. now, i can't really remember what else i had here except for their soup. this place is a great family restaurant and has a casual upscale yet homey atmosphere if that made any sense. i've realized that they've added or changed some items on their menu and i have yet to try it again. but based on what i remember, this restaurant was definitely worth my four stars and was never a disappointment. i will definitely come back when i'm in town! see you soon 9 roses. read more

Best West Bank Vietnamese, just wish they had my beloved Banh Mi for lunch. However, their Bun (vermicelli & salad bowl) is excellent, I've had the Lemongrass Beef as well as grilled pork with imperial roll bites - fresh, light and delicious. Also their crepe appetizer is the bomb diggity. Super fast and friendly service, totally worth a quick hop over the CCC. Hoa Hong / 9 Roses is one of the best places on the Westbank for Vietnamese food. Seriously! I'm hungry when I arrive and can barely move when it's time to leave, and we still have leftovers to take home. FOOD? Lots of choices to pick from. Tons in fact. From Vietnamese to Chinese, they have it. While it doesn't say it on the menu, they will do special orders as well, which is very handy for me since I have food allergies. QUALITY? On every visit, and it's been plenty, the food is ALWAYS fresh. TASTE? One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the city. It really truly is. My wife and I eat here no less than once every 2 weeks. Be sure to try the Bi Cuon (Summer Rolls), the Tom Ho Nam (Hunan Shrimp), and definitely the Com Xao Thap Cam (that is a lot of food for only $7.95!) LOCATION? In Gretna, right off the Expressway. It's not the best location for those not familiar with the area, but it's pretty simple to get to. If you're coming off of the Expressway from Downtown, simply turn left onto Stumpf Blvd, go through the light, make another left at the McDonalds (Friedrichs), then another left onto O'Connor Street. Go down one block and it's on your right hand side. Also, using this way to get there avoids a LOT of the traffic on the lower expressway. PARKING? They have their own parking lot, and it's huge, so you can always find a place to park. SERVICE? They have some of the best wait-staff around. Not sure why others are complaining, as we've never had a problem or had to wait in all the years we've been eating here. The wait-staff here even goes out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful meal. CLEANLINESS? It's always clean on every visit. Never once have the tables been dirty or the bathroom unclean. As soon as a person/couple/family leaves, the bus boys and waitresses are cleaning the table instantly. SAFETY? It's in Gretna, (Gretna PD has one of the fastest response times in the state) right off the Expressway, so it's pretty damn safe. Haven't seen or heard about any issues here in all the years that it's been open. ATMOSPHERE? They are very family friendly, always busy, and it's never too loud. Two wide screen flat panel TVs on either side of the dining area as well. Mostly Vietnamese and Caucasian people dining here. PRICES? Damn good prices for the amount of food you get. The food is fresh and served quickly. It's also reasonably priced for the large volume of food so this was a good visit for me. I've only been here once and don't remember what it was that I ordered, but it was good enough. Also a good sign that you're eating in the right place is that medical professionals were there in their scrubs. This is a pretty good place to get a mix of asian food. I normally go here for their bun rieu (crab soup with vermicelli noodles). It is my favorite thing on the menu. Their Banh Xeo is also delicious, it's not too sweet. Eggrolls are real authentic Vietnamese eggrolls, not too salty and perfectly proportional. My boyfriend and I happened upon this restaurant on our most recent visit to New Orleans. We were both pleasantly surprised! The location is tucked away, but definitely worth it. The service was good, the portion sizes exceeded our expectations, and the flavor of each of our dishes was great! I had the Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce and brown rice. I have been coming here for over 15 years now. At least since 2000 or 2001. Can't quite remember. In all of this time. I don't think I've had one disappointing meal. I've had almost everything on the menu, except for the salad that had the jelly fish. (I can't eat jelly fish). I have noticed since they expanded to the French quarter that their menu has slightly changed emphasizing dishes catering to a more Caucasian pallet. When I first came here, it was almost exclusively Vietnamese customers. But like all good things, 9 roses was discovered by the pho-eating hipster elite. But 9Roses does have one of the most extensive variety of Vietnamese dishes I've ever seen. And this restaurant has introduced me to a different way of cooking and eating. Dishes like bo tai chanh made with raw marinated beef and different fragrant herbs such as rice patty herb and the spicy seafood-laden Thai delight salad have broadened my culinary horizons. I now go to Hong Kong market and other markets just to find these unique flavors to incorporate into my cooking. My only wish is with this new found success after all these years, they don't start changing the menu to suit their new clientele and forget their older customer base. read more

This place is ideal for family style Vietnamese cuisine. For a family of 4, one must order about 3 dishes and a soup, drinks too all rounds out to about $60. My family come out here and always order the hot and sour tamarind soup, with fresh vegetables and catfish -- very similar to TOM YUNG soup in Thai restaurants. It's fresh and very tasty! We live in SF, little Saigon specifically, and as fantastic as the food is in New Orleans, the asian options overall are pretty slim, especially at the budget friendly end. I haven't been there enough to try a TON of things, but the one dish that really stands up to SF Vietnamese is 10.06 - the Grilled Beef Rolls. I could drown in them. I'm thinking about it right now. This is my favorite place for several dishes. They remodeled about a year ago and that seems to have fixed the problem with the smell around the bathrooms. The new decorations are pleasant and even on off hours they always have customers. Recently the menu was re organized and revised and prices have gone up. They have a large vegetarian page. One of my favorite two dishes are the canh chua sweet/sour soup made with tamarind. It's a perfect blend of sweet/sour/hot clear broth, and has tomato, pineapple, lotus stem (sometimes only celery), okra, bean sprouts, rice paddy herb, and whatever protein you select. I've had the fish, shrimp, chicken and tofu ( fried pieces). The fish is a huge chunk of fish, bone in ( be careful). There is something about the broth which really sets off the flavor of okra for me and I always eat it first while its crunchy, before it cooks too much in the broth. Sometimes they serve it with rice, other times not, so if you want rice be sure to remind the waitperson. I think this is the most delicious soup there is and no other restaurant (IMO) that has it prepares it as well as 9 Roses does. My other favorite here is the grilled beef that you cook on a small brazier at the table. They marinade very thinly sliced raw beef, dust it with sesame seeds, on a dish, and serve rice paper disks, a bowl of hot water, and a basket of herbs, lettuce, cucumber, pickled carrot/daikon, rice noodles and chunks of butter. This is a dish for several people I would guess they serve about a pound of the marinated beef. You rub butter over the grill, then put slices of meat on the grill to cook ( a couple of minutes per side). Then you slide the rice paper disk into the hot water, drain it, and place it on your plate. You just need to slide it thru once-- it picks up the water and continues to soften as you roll. Put a slice of the (absolutely delicious) meat on the rice paper with a piece of lettuce, a small pinch of noodles, cucumber, carrot, and pull the edge closest to you up and over the mound, tuck in the sides, and roll it up. Dip it in the nuoc nam ( fish sauce with sugar and ?). HEAVEN! The meat cooked this way is out of this world. I've had it with chicken, but I think the flavor of the beef is my favorite. I usually cook all the meat first then pile it up on a plate so you can roll and eat quicker. That also means I can take left overs home ( if there are any) I've tried the banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe) but it's not as good ( crispy, flavorful ) as Pho Nola. Their Vietnamese fresh spring rolls are delicious because they put enough mint or basil leaves in them, but with the new menu the prices went up and they now offer ( small) two In addition to the (large) order of 4 rolls. The peanut sauce is a nice level of sweetness. The ( boneless) duck was delicious, crispy. I don't like the way they chop up pieces on the bone-in dish. With bone in, I always seem to end up crunching on an unintended bone, ick, so I always go with boneless. I've also had the minced shrimp cooked around sugar cane. You roll those in rice paper with herbs, too. The quail with little buns was interesting but not as tasty as some other dishes. I'm not sure it's a Vietnamese dish, but I like the way they do the vegetarian eggplant in garlic sauce. Oddly enough, I've never had pho or a noodle bowl here. With such a large selection of other dishes you can't get elsewhere I usually get canh chua, grill beef, or try something I haven't had before. read more

I've been eating at this establishment since I can remember. Sunday afternoons with the family after church is where you can find us the majority of the time unless we decide to eat Pho. Hoa Hong 9 (translated to Nine Roses) has an extensive menu so take time when ordering if its your first time, which I doubt for many it isn't. The best way to eat here is family style. My go to dish when I dine here is the Bo Nuong Vi which is a dish that can easily be shared with 4-5 people. A sizzling cooker that is kept hot with coal that comes out along with raw marinated beef and squid and shrimp (at your request) for you to cook it on. The one reason I order this dish is for the dipping sauce mam nem (vietnamese anchovy dipping sauce). But besides that everything else is great also. It's certainly grown and expanded and moved locations, but the food has always remained the same. Today we stopped in for the lunch, as usual we started with the house quail! Fantastic, if it's your first time, don't miss it. Then for the main course I had pork with Chinese eggplant in a clay pot (13.29). This is one of my favorite dishes here. We always get it. You won't be disappointed. And to mix it up we tried the pork spare ribs with pickled mustard greens soup, (16.07). I was pleasantly surprised at just how good this is. The veggies where pickled and had a good crunch to them. I have become a huge fan of Vietnamese food and outside of some places I've been to in Seattle and San Francisco, this is as good as it gets. Look past the obligatory faux-Chinese and focus on the good stuff: the Vietnamese menu. The pho is at least as good as Tan Dinh or Pho Tau Bay, but the Bun dishes - wow are those great. Best Bun in the city, hands down. Very good specials, goat curry banh mi amongst them, don't pass the Banh Xeo (vietnamese crepe). The list is endless. What is not is the fact that 9 Roses is the most consistent, reliable and well executed Vietnamese restaurant in the city. For some unknown reason all the great places in New Orleans are across the river but this is definitely worth the trip. Good vietnamese food, but with so much excellent competition in the area, it doesn't stand out as spectacular. The service was perfectly good. There's nothing wrong with the atmosphere, it's just that there's not much of one at all. My wife and a friend both had different kinds of pho - while good overall, we've had better elsewhere. I ordered a dish where they bring out a grill and you cook your own meat over it. I enjoyed everything from the meat to the sauces to the vegetables, but I don't know that I would go back there or highly recommend it to friends. I'd give it 5 stars, but since I'm no Vietnamese food connoisseur, can't say for sure this is the best, but it's pretty darn good. I eat here about once a week, sometimes more. They know the sound of my voice on the phone now, so as soon as I start to say, "Hi, yes. I'd like to place an order..." they say "beef pho." Yum. I think I could eat that stuff every day. No lie. I have tried other dishes (all very good) and want to get a little more experimental with this place in the future. Maybe average in flavor. Slightly above average in cost. The hot pot tasted exactly like tamarind soup and if noted as that, I would never consider paying over $20 for it. The crawfish fried rice had little crawfish. The seafood salad was too sweet. The two noodle dishes ordered by the children (special egg noodle soup and the bun Bo hue) were left largely untouched. The one plus was that portion sizes were generous. Will not consider returning. read more
