This is my second time going to Dong Phuong. The first time was for a King Cake during Mardi Gras season. Hands down it's the absolute BEST king cake I've ever tasted and trust me, I've tasted dozens. So, when I found out they were going to have mini king cakes for 4th of July, I had to get one. Made it there about 7:30 am, line was wrapped. By the time they opened at 8, they had already given out all available tickets. These are high demand. This time, the crawfish pies were just coming out so I tried one of those. The dough was a bit sweet but flaky. Inside.. was interesting. There was crawfish of course and there was a vegetable, I can't make out which one. The pie was a different flavor than I'm used to. Sweet and Savory and I tasted like there was a bit of Italian dressing or something in it. I'll try a meat one next time. read more

Located off a main road. There's a large parking lot to park. I saw a lot of reviews and thought to swing by to try out as I was in the area. The moment we stepped inside the bakery, we were greeted right away. Staff were fast and friendly. Staff help assorted us with any questions we had. Bought some foods to try. I tried the cold cut banh mi. It was good. Bread was crispy and lots of filling. Bought some taro, white bean, black bean, corn desserts (Che) and jelly to try. All were delicious especially on a hot day. Bought some pastries which were limited at the end of the day. Got some chaud pork with onion, crawfish pie, meat pie, baked bao which all had great pastry taste, but the filling wasn't the greatest for me I guess. This king cake generates the most buzz, and people wait early in long lines at Zuppardo's to get one. For me, it's way too sweet, although that can be said of many other popular king cakes....so to each their own. I do appreciate the strong cinnamon flavor and tender crumb. But I wouldn't wait in line for it. Still, Dong Phuong is one of the truly iconic king cakes of New Orleans as it looks different than anything else on the market. I only stopped by for a online pick up for my cream cheese Mardi Gras king cake. It was my first time finally getting my hands on one. For online pick up, super fast and efficient. The staff were sweet even though they were busy! There was a long line for those wanting to get one, so beware of that. This king cake is truly the best. The texture is soft and flaky. Cream cheese icing is perfection, and the soft cream cheese almost custard like filling is divine. Definitely my number one favorite king cake. So glad I was able to get one. read more

Came here to pick up our king cake and figured we'd grab some lunch while we were here. Did the same thing a few years ago and I wasn't a fan of what I ordered. I got a beef and rice and it was kinda fatty. This time I went with something they are more popular for the bún bò huế. The broth was rich and flavorful. It's listed as spicy, but I didn't find it so. I even added some sriracha to kick it up a notch. The meat was very tender and juicy. I'd definitely order this again. Also, got an egg roll order it was pretty good. They were smaller than I thought they'd be, but you get 4. My only knock would be they weren't very busy when we got there, but still took a while to take our order. I would need to do a whole different review on their king cakes. The grilled porkchop w rice was also very delicious! Loved their pickled cabbage. The spring rolls was ok and very meaty. The pandan soy milk from a can was very delicious! There is a bakery next door that sells different types of mini pies, bahn mi, etc. There is also outdoor seating with benches but there were homeless people asking for food or money during the time I went. This was my first time here, and overall the food was good--but the real standout was their meat pies from the bakery side! I came here with friends before our swamp tour, and they offer a solid selection of Vietnamese dishes like pho, rice plates, and vermicelli bowls--exactly what you'd expect from a spot like this. I ordered the Grilled beef Vermicelli with Egg Rolls and it was good. Afterward, we stopped by the bakery that is attached, where my friend picked up a mix of their meat-filled pies: Crawfish, Pâté Chaud Pork & Onion, and Char Siu Pork. Side quest while in NOLA. I've heard so much about their king cakes but my visit isn't for that. We had a late lunch here where I ordered their shaken beef. It was a little sweeter for my taste but all the flavor profiles are there. The beef was tender and very flavorful. The broth which came with the plate was also very tasty and comforting. We also visited their bakery where I had their baked bao. It was really, really good. I actually regret not buying more. The service on both sides were typical Vietnamese service. They ask for your order, make your food, serve you the. Just leave you alone to enjoy every morsel of it. After a few days of southern food, my friends and I were soo excited to switch things up and eat some Vietnamese food. Luckily, on our way back from a swamp tour, we passed through a bunch of Vietnamese restaurants and decided on Dong Phuong. They were incredibly busy (both the bakery and restaurant) but we (party of 5) managed to snag a table right away at noon on a Saturday. I tried their pho dac biet, some of their egg rolls, and Thai iced tea with boba. We also picked up some banh mis from their bakery while we waited for our pho. They were very generous with the meat in the pho and everything was tasty. The banh mis were also hefty, packed with ingredients and the bread was hot out the oven. Everyone we've interacted with at the bakery and restaurant were super friendly. I recommend stopping by! read more

Took advantage of the opportunity to visit this place after a long day of touring. We arrived about 30 minutes before 3pm and luckily they were still open as the time on the Yelp and Google says they close at 5pm. We managed to get a late lunch and picked at what was left from the bakery. We ordered a plate of shaken beef and BBH. Enjoyed those then we head on next door to get whatever what was left to take back to the hotel for snack. We ordered their Banh mi as well that we should've eaten there cause the bread were a little soggy by the time we got our hands on it. Updating my DP review from years ago and I still LOVE IT as much!! From the pastries my favorite is the pate chaud. This never disappoints and I always get a box to go every time. The king cake if you could get one is also wonderful. Out of all the king cakes I've tried in NOLA, DP has been the best. In this trip, we actually dined in (haven't done this in a while) and we got pho and the bo luc lac plate. The portions were huge and the food was delicious as pictured. I came here on a super cold morning to pick up a king cake. The line was long but since it was cold they were nice to open up a section that was inside and warm. The service was great after reaching the POS we got their signature coconut king cake and the pecan king cake. Price is pretty on point to most of the competition. And I love the flavors and fillings. The coconut king cake is amazing. The pecan was great too but cononunt puts the king in king cake. Made a trek here as we're heading back to TX coming from FL. This was actually my hubby's idea (props to him) on this find as I didn't expect it!! Driving here though was a little sketchy to be honest haha as we're driving some small roads near the swamp to get there but alas we made it. Outside was very well kept and noticed they sell king cakes which I had no idea about but it's apparently a NoLa thing and only made within carnival season and sells out everyday!! (Will need to try and order one next time we are in town!) Anyways, the food! We went to the bakery side as we just wanted to grab some banh mi's to travel along with us. I got their #4 Chinese BBQ Pork and hubby got their #5 Grilled BBQ pork and we also grabbed some their pastries and desserts to try as well. But WOWWWW that Banh Mi, we were REALLY impressed because that was definitely fully loaded with all the fillings and SO much meat! For $7, it was definitely worth it! Flavorful and packed with all the goodness and their pate, so perfect!! A lot of their pastries brings me back memories of my childhood of when my parents and I would go to the Asian bakeries to take home to eat whenever we were in the Garden Grove area back in CA. it was great nostalgia. Workers were so nice, friendly as well. Lots of parking at least when we arrived there. The middle side of the place is their restaurant which serves phó and other goodness. Knew I wanted to come here during my trip to New Orleans. We ubered 30 minutes just to eat here and it was definitely worth it. Had the bun Bo hue and it was so good, much better than the bun Bo hue I get back home in california. We also had plans to go to their bakery which is connected to the main restaurant. We got there around 11am on a Saturday and could tell most of the bakery sweets and items were sold out already :(, not sure if this is a normal occurrence or if it's because we came the Saturday right after lunar new year which was on a Wednesday. We still made our way over to the bakery, we grabbed a big bag of their fresh banh mi bread, a pate chaud to try, and a Pandan dessert. Their banh mi bread is the CLOSEST one I've found in the U.S. that is just like what I had on my trip to Vietnam. It was so good and if I lived here I'd be at the bakery every weekend getting a bag of the banh mi bread. Pate chaud was also delicious. Service was good at both the restaurant and bakery, friendly, took our orders, etc., pretty standard for this type of restaurant. If you live here or you are on vacation here I think it's definitely worthwhile to come here. THIS WAS THE BEST PHO I HAVE EVER HAD. HOLY CRAP. My expectations were incredibly low due to not having found a pho place in Louisiana that I have liked so far. My fiancé's family owns a Vietnamese restaurant and I constantly compare them in terms of taste, cost, and care. The portions are HUGE and fairly priced. If you know Asians, you know we like a good meal for a cheap price. We came to the bakery and found on Yelp that they had also had a restaurant. We got the XL pho combination ($18), and it was HUGE! Before any sauces are ever put in, we have to try the broth. The broth was savory, perfect amount of sweet, and incredibly rich (great for a hangover cure and when feeling sick). We ended up not using ANY sauces because the broth was just that good. They did not skimp out on the meat or the noodles. Veggies were all fresh and plentiful. We also ordered the Bún bò Huế and it was delicious. It was interesting that they added tofu to this dish, but that wasn't terrible of an addition. The tables were clean, the staff were fast, portions were huge, and plenty of seating. This seemed very hole in the wall and felt incredibly cozy. It felt like a place that I grew up in to embrace my Asian culture and meet up with family. I only wish this wasn't so far out of the way, but I can see this being a place I'll come back to and crave in the future. This review is solely for the Kings Cake. We stopped in on the Monday before Fat Tuesday to score the coveted cake. We arrived around 7am to find the line already about 70 people deep, the sale doesn't start until 8am so I have to assume the front of the line go there around 6am. You are allowed a max of 3 per person and there's no guarantee you'll get one and they don't tell you how many there are. By the time we got there the parking lot (which is large) was already full, we ended up parking on the street and walking over. The prices range but are roughly $35 each. By the time we got our Kings cakes it was 9am. I've had their regular, cream cheese and coconut- they are all great. My favorite is the cream cheese and then the coconut. I would love to try other flavors next year. Will I return? Yes- I brought our cakes back to MN and they lasted the flight and traveled well. They are heavy but no worries. read more

I tried cream cheese king cake and a slice of the praline one. I give them both a 7.5/10. The icing is really good. Almost like a whipped cream. Now what I didn't like is the way the filling is sprinkled throughout. Both cakes lacked filling. At first I thought it was just the praline because I only had an individual slice. Took a side trip to Nola on my recent trip to Biloxi. It's a little over an hour drive and I wanted beignets. I've been to Don Phuong before a little over a year ago. I've tried their meat pies, banh mi, and a few other bakery goodies. The meat pies have a filling similar to a pate chaud except it's very peppery. The sharp taste is balanced out with the slight sweetness in the dough that it's baked in. It's good but I like their pate chaud better. Their banh mi is pretty good as well. On this trip, we wanted to try the restaurant side so we stopped in around lunch time. It was busyyy. We were still seated promptly. Took a while for someone to come by to take our order. Just pack your patience. The food came out fast fortunately. I ordered the bun bo xao and it was really good. The meat was plentiful and so tender. The nuoc mam was good and had chili in it already. I was missing the chopped peanuts though. That would've made it perfect. We knew we wouldn't make it early enough to snag a king cake but it was still disappointing to see the sold out sign. They are currently only doing walk ups. Honestly I've never had king cake, but I was definitely interested in trying one from a James Beard awarded bakery. James Beard award winning Vietnamese Bakery? Nice! Dong Phuong located in a suburb area a 15-20 minute drive east from the center of New Orleans. Knowing there is a Vietnamese American community out in the area, it was interesting for me to visit and support my kin. They have a large building and it would be hard to miss. There is a private parking lot for their bakery, restaurant and what looks like a distribution area to the back. The bakery is at the front closest to the street side. Service was extremely welcoming and nice. The ladies working here were all super sweet and friendly. My boyfriend and I ordered a few items to share. We got a #1 Banh Mi Thit Nguoi aka the French Cold Cuts Vietnamese sandwich, a Crawfish Pie, an Egg Custard Tart, and a Banh Trung Thu Thap Cam Mot Hot aka Mixed Nuts Mooncake with One Salted Egg. The banh mi bread was not as warm and soft as I experience back home in Orange County California. I suspect it's because they do not have as much constant foot traffic. The interior had a really gelatinous piece of cold cut I could have gone without. The crawfish pie was interesting to try, a kick to each bite. The mooncake is inferior with the filling really loose and the exterior hard and lacking the shine. The selection was also really minimal when we came on the actual Mid Autumn Festival day. The egg custard had a decent filling but the breading was hard and tough. I prefer a flakey tart. Interesting to try and I like how this Vietnamese bakery is attracting folks of all ethnic backgrounds here. I even hear they supply a lot of the sandwich bread for the po boy spots in town. I wasn't expecting to find one of the best Banh Mi's I've had all the way in Louisiana. After being stuck in a work conference all day, my fiance brought me a banh mi and this was SO good!! One of my must stop ats when I come down to the city. The only issue is who closes a restaurant during the week and not open for dinner time? The first time we drove out there was on Thursday and Yelp said they were open until 5. But when we actually got there, the bakery was open but not the restaurant. We only wanted to eat at the restaurant. Prices are reasonable especially considering the portion size. I can NEVER finish the whole bowl of bbh ( bun bo que) they give you so many different cuts of meat and it's piled in. The broth is flavored so well you really dont need to add anything else in unless you like it spicier. The bbh here is my favorite in all the places that I have visited in various cities in the United States so I haven't even bothered to try any other dishes.
