I'm always here with my family on Sundays and it's a great place for traditional Vietnamese family meals. The wait time is a bit long for me especially at the rise of lunch and dinner hours but the food is so good it's worth it. Today I decided to try the bun cha gio rau cai (vermicelli bowl with vegetable egg rolls). It was only $8 for the bowl and it was so filling, I could barely finish it. The egg rolls aren't like other vegetarian egg rolls I've tried. The hot and crispy egg rolls are great with the fish sauce drenched noodles and fresh crisp greens. The staff and service are friendly and quick. The environment is perfect for families and there's so much on the menu that suits everyone. OMG, the food here is so good. They serve decent Viet food here. Especially the BBQ thing. Sorry I didnt take any photos of my dinner but we ordered some beef,shrimp to grill. They came with some veggie and rice paper so that we can do the springroll ourselves. I also ordered the claypot fish as well and a medium bowl of Vietnamese Hot and Soup. The fish was good but personally, I think the soup was too sweet for me. I've always heard things about this restaurant, but never bothered to try until this year. I love how well everything was taken care of despite how busy they were. Today, I went and they were very helpful with getting us what we needed. The staff are very nice and funny. All of my experiences here were wonderful! We heard about this place from a friend. They serve authentic Vietnamese food here! The menu is extensive. The most popular dishes are: - tabletop grilled beef (bo nuong vi) -- to make your own spring roll - caramelized catfish (ca kho to) - hot n' sour soup catfish (canh chua ca) My husband and I had the tabletop beef one night, and came back to try the caramelized fish, hot n' sour soup catfish, and snowpea leaves w/ garlic. Yes, it was so much food that we had to split the dishes to try over a span of two days. There are still more dishes on their menu that we'd like to try! My husband was surprised that we came twice in a row, but I was just really craving Vietnamese food. From what I understand, the restaurant is a locally-owned and family-run business. When it was first opened, the owner(s) named the restaurant after their nine children. When dinner is over, the servers offer a free yellow mungbean dessert w/ coconut milk. It's pretty delicious and kind of them! This is the first restaurant I've been to that has been generous with free dessert in this way, AND you still get complimentary fortune cookies. This place is super grungy. I'm sure they keep the lighting dim so you won't see how really grungy it is. First I want to say, this this place is not known for their pho or Kung pao chicken or general tso chicken. If you want that go somewhere else or your usual places are closed, then that's fine. Hoa hong 9 or nine roses is your traditional Vietnamese restaurant specializing in family style dishes were you order a variety of dishes and everyone shares. My personal favorites are bo nuong vi, banh xeo, banh hoi thit/Nem nuong, ca kho to, suon rim mang, and canh chua. I know this is not for everyone but most people I take and order this with usually enjoy the meal. Service is typical for a Vietnamese restaurant where they take your order, bring it out and disappear afterwards. If you drink a lot, order two-three drinks beforehand. My family loves 9 Roses! We have been going here for many years! The food is always very good and the staff is very attentive. Several times, since the pandemic started, we have ordered online and taken advantage of the curbside pickup. It's really convenient. If you order online, the wait time usually shows @45 minutes. That is not true though. You call them directly to verify the wait time and they usually will tell you it's only 15-20 minutes, even if they are super busy! 9 Roses is always my go-to for Vietnamese home cooked dishes. My friends even make the drive to the Westbank from Metairie, Kenner, etc, some visiting several times a week! You can't beat the flavor-filled home-y dishes! What I recommend: -Bo Nuong Vi: A tabletop grill for cook meats of your choice (beef, squid, shrimp) in which you can wrap into your own custom made springrolls. Served with herbs and vegetables -Bo Tai Chanh: A beef tataki dish, served with herbs, thinly sliced lemons and onions and a "mam nem" sauce. SO DELICIOUS. Probably my favorite appetizer here. -Suon Rim Man: Sizzled pork riblets in a brown sauce. This is my son's absolute favorite. It is eaten with rice. He loves to take the sauce and put it on his rice. -Canh Chua: a sweet and sour soup eaten with rice. It can be served with catfish (my favorite), shrimp, or with just the vegetables. The soup has tomatoes, celery, a sponge-like celery-like vegetable, bean sprouts, pineapples, and a couple other items. -Ca kho to: Vietnamese braised catfish in a clay pot. It has a brown sauce, a LITTLE similar to the Suon Rim Man. They're similar, yet so different, and both so delicious. This dish is also eaten with rice. Every dish here is really good. I haven't had a dish I haven't liked, but those above are my staples, that I get at almost every sitting. It's a family-style restaurant, so groups will easily be accommodated here. There are booths as well and smaller tables, so a dinner for two is fine too, but you just wouldn't be able to order all the dishes to try! Love this place, since I was a kid. Still a regular. Potential for eternal love includes: - the vegetarian menu that's located a few pages in (and even though the pho has a broth that's meat-derived, at least they note it on there for you. I know of places across the country who do not and I found out after delving deep into the Yelp reviews). -the spring rolls (incredible. But truth be told, I rarely meet a spring roll that I do not like). -dreammmmy peanut sauce that comes with -nicer ambiance than Pho Tau Bay and other more... bare bones and fluorescent joints. -overall selection. That menu is huge! -good smells from the hibachi-type grills they bring out for some entree that I know nothing about but it really looks cool. Potential deal breakers: -I dunno, I don't trust that "Chinese" portion of the menu. -the only red wine available is Cabernet. I passed. A bad Cabernet is like death. -the lemongrass tofu dish I ordered was *just* tofu and looked unappetizing (chunks of tofu swimming in a curious yellowish-brown oily sauce). I ate one or two pieces, but couldn't get past the way it looked... the flavor wasn't all that great and would have had to have been to get past the appearance. I just felt it was really really greasy. Not a deal breaker, but something to take note of: it appears that the dishes are all kinda singular on veg menu (with the possible exception of bun)-- just vegetables like spinach or just tofu. I'm sure it's how it's traditionally served. Hey, if you're hungry enough... I've never ordered a vermicelli bowl again since there are just so many other choices to love here so I can't say if they've improved in size and flavor. I've always heard wonderful things about Vietnamese fare on the West Bank so I was actually quite excited about trying about this place occasionally known as it's translated English name - "Nine Roses." We arrived here around 12:30 and I noticed that the restaurant seemed mostly empty. Then again it's a rather large facility (awesome for receptions and parties, eh?), replete with tropical-esque fish tanks. The wait was a little extended for us to receive our entrees for whatever reason, but hey, they have televisions to distract you a bit from that. And if you have good company with you like I did - all the better! Let me just say the tofu vermicelli bowl was glorious and massive. It's not the most complex Vietnamese dish, I know, but it's usually safely vegan if you substitute the carrot fish sauce for peanut sauce. The tofu was plentiful and nicely fried - the veggies were fresh and crisp, although it wouldn't have hurt to amp up the veggie ingredients . . . I definitely ate myself silly, then again later for a snack, and the subsequent day for lunch. Again, did have to insist on having my water refilled, so service wasn't super awesome. We went here for a family dinner of 10. I'm giving this a slightly lower rating due to their service. I understand we are a big table but it took a very long time for food to come out after ordered. We did family style so it wasn't like there was 10 individual orders. 1. Canh chua was awesome. Although, I will say it is a little too sweet for my tasting but the overall flavors were there. 2. Quail were tender, flavorful and HOT. It came with bao buns so you can peel the meat and make it a sandwich! Shaken beef was solid as well. Banh xeo was very crispy & tasty - I'd give it a 3. In my opinion, home made is the best. Yellow noodle soup-2, wasn't all that special. Hieu tieu- 4 tasty and filled with a variety, which is how I like it. The nem nuong -3. Walking in, the place was kind of dark but easy to adjust to. The place very packed which is always a good sign. The waiters & waitresses were quick to get our drinks & orders. The service was great. terrible now since the renovation/ new owners. i used to love it before they made changes. food was very good and reasonable prices. now quality of food went down and prices are higher. i was looking forward for them to reopen. and when they did i went. its just chaotic in there. they don't know what you ordered, bunch of people keep asking what did you order. then they can't find bill when you try to pay. they asked again. I went twice since they reopen and both times, same thing. also ordered to go recently. they said 25 minutes, drove out there, they don't even have it written down. then they said it will be ready soon. asked again 20 minutes later, they said they will go check in the kitchen, then they came back and said it will be ready soon. now i know they forgot and are going to rush cook it and they did. It's not really fair to judge on one dish, but the one dish I had was excellent! I had the egg foo yung, and it contained huge, fresh Gulf shrimp! I am so used to every other restaurant cutting corners and using frozen stuff, that this was a pleasant surprise! Now it did have frozen peas and carrots in it, which were not good but I was able to pick them out, I didn't let it ruin the enjoyment of perfectly fried egg patties with succulent chunks of pork, chicken and fresh Gulf shrimp, topped with a tasty sauce. The downside was that they didn't serve Thai Tea or Bubble Tea, and the service was kind of abrupt, they didn't ask if everything was okay, didn't offer a to-go box, didn't ask if we wanted anything else before they brought the check. Since I didn't get my Thai Tea I had wanted to try one of their desserts, but since he had already brought the check without offering, I decided to skip it this time. Been here multiple times, and was very surprised that I have never reviewed or had any pictures for this place.. But we always come here with a group of friends and eat family style dining! We had the following: - Bo Nuong Vi - beef on hot plate - normally you have to cook this yourself, but you can ask for them to cook it in the back if you choose not to, especially because the smell will stick to your clothes, very delicious and flavorful, we normally use this meat to roll our own spring rolls, but can also be eaten with rice - Suong Rim Man - simmered spare pork ribs - caramelized with sugar and fish sauce (don't let that scare you away, its actually really tasty) this dish was delicious, a little bit of sweet and salty, delicious with rice! - Muc Xao Ca Ri - curry squid - very aromatic with a hint of spice, squid cooked to perfection, and not overcooked and rubbery - Banh Hoi Thit Nuong - pressed vermicelli squared with chargrilled pork - this alone is a meal on its own! The pork is well seasoned and cooked so perfect!
