I didn't expect to ever return here after my last experience, but after eating at a sushi restaurant across the street, I saw a truck with a sign advertising that the 99 cent store is going out of business so I went to check it out. When I asked the cashier when they would officially close she said probably June, but at the rate things are disappearing off the shelves, I'm not sure they'll make it that long! They still had some items and with the "up to 30% off", a lot of items are FINALLY under $1.00. I bought some basic needs like birthday cards, Purina Beggin' treats for my dog, make-up removal cloths, etc. The cute heart bag I bought there was filled up for $30. Looking at my receipt I just discovered I paid the regular price for a card - $2.99, though, so I think they made a error ringing it up. The staff was helpful scanning items to look up prices since a lot of their prices were ripped off the shelves and they allow me to put my items on a shelf that they would watch while I ran to the restroom because I ended up being in there longer than I expected. This is a small 99 Cents Only store with narrow/crowded aisles and too many off-shelf displays. It is convenient to our other shopping along Mira Mesa Blvd, but we stop here less and less. Produce is frequently placed behind the wrong price, which is an unpleasant surprise at checkout. Stock is frequently depleted, and many of our favorite items are gone. Checkout lines these days are long and strung down the aisles. Parking can be a problem. read more

Great store. Opens early at 8am everyday and has a multitude of items. This one also has a grocery area that I see a lot of people shopping in. I like that they have a lot of trinket items for my daughter's teenage events. As a team mom, I can find so many keepsakes that the kids live here. Party supplies and party bag items are stacked here. They also have a large amount of snacks, for those of you who are snackers. Check it out. read more

It's nice having a 99 cents store closer its super convenient. The store is quite large in size and has everything you need from groceries to home decor and everything in between. I wouldn't go grocery shopping here, I've seen some not so appetizing items. But I would defiantly purchase home goods and decorations it's such a great deal can't beat the prices. It offers a little more than the dollar tree. The items aren't exactly quality, but if you don't need to last long this would be a good option. I wouldn't recommend getting anything electrical related here. Overall can't beat the prices. Lots of deals on everyday things you can use. read more

Looks like the Dollar Tree in Mira Mesa has some serious competition, because the newest branch of the 99 Cents Only Store has just opened! Tonight was their soft opening; the store doesn't open officially until next Thursday. But that didn't stop people from stopping by and seeing what the store has to offer - including this bargain-minded shopper. Like its brethren across the country, the 99 Cents Only has just about anything reasonably priced starting at under a dollar. House decorations, cleaning supplies, small gifts, and even groceries... you name it, they probably have it! (Even if some of the items on sale are a bit outdated; who needs a 3rd generation iPod mini case? Unless you have a 3rd generation iPod mini...) On this visit, as I was browsing the aisles, I remembered I needed some tissue for my desk, so I bought that and a few other items for the house. Total price for everything I bought - $6. Is there a way to give 0 stars? Michelle, the short white/white-passing manager of this branch, embodies the very definition of unprofessionalism. Like another reviewer (Josh R.) has reported, she speaks to Asian customers as if we were her employees. Upper management needs take action about her classist and borderline racist behavior. Today, I returned a few items and received a store credit card of $6.47. But I wanted to buy a packet of Warheads, so I gave the cashier Susan this card, saying I wanted to purchase the candy. She took the card and swiped it, apparently thinking it was a gift card, despite the fact that I told her it was store credit and handed her the receipt saying it so. Susan's action froze the system, and she told me I couldn't buy this card. I clarified what I wanted to buy was Warheads, and she smiled, "You should have told me you wanted this then." I told her I did. I felt sympathy for her because all the cashiers present were Asian and couldn't speak English fluently. Susan called the manager, Michelle, whom this review is about. We had to wait 15 minutes for Michelle, who didn't so much look at me when came by. She shooed Susan away and after a few moments, glared at me and blamed me for the error in the system. I told her this card was clearly store credit and that I had clearly stated to Susan it was the candy I wanted. Michelle didn't so much look at me or apologize and spoke to me as though I were her employee. She had to call customer service to fix her issue. I told her my mother and I had to leave because of a medical appointment. Michelle said we couldn't leave the store until this issue was resolved. I told her I didn't need to buy the Warheads and said we were leaving. Michelle said, NO, and waved me away as she was on the phone. She apologized to a white man who was next in line who was buying lots of items. I suggested to her she could always transfer the funds to another card on another machine. Let us leave. She said no, we couldn't leave. This was 30 minutes in and we were late for our doctor's appointment. When customer service finally helped her fix her own system, she literally threw the card and receipt at us. There was no apology from her whatsoever. We finally left the store, never to return again. Is it coincidence that another review by yet another Asian also experienced the very same disrespect my mother and I did? When I read Josh R.'s review, I was appalled; Michelle had also treated him as though he worked there. Clearly, this is no isolated incident of Michelle's unprofessionalism, and upper management needs to confront her anti-Asian sentiment. on April 14th I was shopping at Walmart store on Community road in Poway with my sister and when we were leaving the parking area, I saw a car with a banner saying that 99 c store is closing, sale 30%. As the store was on my way home and I needed to buy some items that I usually buy there, I decided to stop at the store and shop. we spend almost an hour looking for the merchandise I needed and when we get to the cashier, I asked if all items were for the discounted price, she said, no, but she can't say which ones without scanning them and she started to scan the items, she was almost done with my two carts, when she told me that she can't continue as another customer was in the line waiting. I was surprised as no one complained about the wait, she was the only one, then manager came and she cleared the record and when I asked why is she doing it, she said they are closing the store and can't waist time on me and basically she pointed me to the door. When I complained, she said I can report her if I want, she didn't care. l guess she is upset as the store is closing, but is it consumers fault? They have misleading advertisement, they could even make an announcement at the store telling customers which items are on sale and on top of everything, they address the customers so rudely and insultingly as if we are at fault in this situation. My check was over $115 already and would have been more if they serviced us as they were suppose to. Is this the way how to treat the customers??? read more

Yes 99 cents is not 99 cents anymore!!! And whenyou try to call them to ask if they have a certain item, NO ONE PICK UP THE PHONE!!! Been trying to call them every 30 minutes before going there to see if they have it on stock instead of going there and nothing on the shelf. This store consistently has terrible signs for products that are NOT 99 cents. Sign says: "All candy is 99 cents unless otherwise marked" We grab a bag of candy, go through the checkout process, then find out the bag of candy is really 4.99. No signs around the candy. No sticker on the candy. No notice of any kind that this candy is a huge rip off until you're checking out. At that point it's not worth having to get out of line and pick a different product. It's better to go to elsewhere where they are able to accurately post prices and not get surprised at the register. read more

Can't go wrong with 99 cents right ??? Well, these establishments make you spend more than you plan to and buy things you may never need. Dammit my weakness ! I'm weary about buying fresh produce here..I mean if anything I am very anal about what I put into my body so I'm usually all about that organic, non-GMO life. The quality is lacking in my opinion, but I don't come here for the fresh produce. Costco, Sprouts, Grocery Outlet, and Trader Joe's beat this place in that department by far. Surprisingly, I did find a small 'organic' section. Price point is the same though. Some frozen foods are relatively cheap, but please check the expiration date. I also found some bags had punctured holes in it. Eew. No bueno. Now on to the good stuff: Affordable cleaning supplies, house décor, condiments, gift wraps/accessories, and random bathroom amenities. Improvements need to be made due to limited cashiers and limited parking spots. Just make sure you know when the best time to go. Customer service was also just ok. Overall, it's more that just 99 cents as advertised on items and you definitely will walk out of here wondering why the heck you spent so much ! CHECK THE PRICE AT THE REGISTER I cannot tell you how many times I have come home only to realize items marked 99 Cents on the shelves are 4 and 5 dollars. When this is caught at the register, even with photos to prove where the items are, they still refuse to charge the correct price. Per the office of weights and measures, they are required to to this by law and they still refuse. The managers at the store level don't care and have the audacity to become rude with the customers when they point this out. and their so called headquarters customer service does not follow through. You aren't really saving money when they are being sneaky about charging you more. I love the products that this site offers but every time I go, it's a hassle with waiting in line. Something with the registers or something with them trying to get you to join a membership program. Today I went in on my 30 minute lunch break and grabbed what I needed in 5 minutes. Then scrambled to find the end of a line and waited in line another 20 mins. It's close to my job and convenient most times. But things like this happen a little too often to trust shopping there anymore. This store is a bit of a haven for educators (I would know!) it has tons of stuff that kids love and i love to use for incentives for them throughout the year or just as little gifts. Today I bought a bunch of stuff for them for Christmas. Christmas erasers, some holiday sparkles for their Christmas projects, these adorable little Christmas bags that come with a pattern and markers so they can decorate it!! It'll be perfect for hen to put in the books I bought them for the holiday, too! I can't speak for the food they have here but they have FRESH food here....I'm talking asparagus and fruits like you wouldn't believe. It's interesting to me because it's literally an all stop shop. Schools supplies? Yup. Toiletries? Yes indeed. And for reasonable prices. If you need something and want to pay a reasonable price, definitely stop here to see if they have what you need! Wow! I'm surprised! This is a really nice 99 Cents Store LOL It's better than the Dollar Tree... Only this location though! They carry more stuff than other 99 Cents Stores and they're also a lot bigger and more organized. It's rather new, I remember when they were still building this. I think it's about 2 years old? They have name brand items unlike Dollar Tree that will mostly have unknown knockoffs. The shampoos they have here are Garnier Fructis, Herbal Essences, Tresemme! There's brand chapsticks like vaseline, lip smackers, blistex. They have an awesome beverage aisle with lots of name brand soda, not just the cheap generic Shasta! haha Some of my faves that I saw were the Mexican Coke Bottles and Pepsi. There's also the fancy Voss waters here! In addition to their 99 Cent items they also have stuff throughout the store that a little bit more but also dirt cheap. I saw they carry a Star Wars version of the game board Operation for $9.99! I even saw they had a Disney Princess pop-up tent for under $10! wow! read more

Pros: I liked that this 99 cents only didn't smell like old rotten produce like the other ones do. They have good deals on party supplies here. Cons: Customer service was lacking and employees were weird. One older lady with dyed black hair and tons of makeup was being crazy obsessive about keeping it neat. I was picking out stuff, and she damn near yelled at me for "messing up" her obsessively neat rows. Then she cut me off and wouldn't even let me look at the stuff to pick out what I wanted-crazy! My husband and I came here looking for the coffee in the cartons (other 99cent stores have them I'm told). Well this one doesn't stock it so we walked around and looked at things anyways. First thing I noticed: it was disorganized. We were here on a Sunday after church so I imagine it couldn't have gotten that trashed in the few hours they had been open. The Halloween section was just a mess. The produce wasn't fresh, we saw a few molded things. The bathroom rugs area was messy too. We considered buying a bath mat but the lines were long and moving very slow. We decided it wasn't worth our effort and we went elsewhere. Also, the parking lot is funky shaped and they share with other businesses. People fly through here, we almost got hit twice. In addition to that not everything is 99¢, which annoys me just because of the name. It's like the "Dollar Store" and how most of their stuff is over $5. I question how much money you could actually save buying groceries here as some things were priced much higher than say Walmart, Target, Hmart, or Trader Joe's. You could go slightly down the street to the Vinh supermarket and still get better deals. If 99 Cent Store is your cup of tea, go for it. Me personally I'll pass. read more

This is definitely bigger than the Dollar Tree down the street and it has a grocery section. I think it gets pretty overwhelming because I'm used to the Dollar Tree. Parking is great and the lines move pretty quickly. Stop by if you need something Made in China because they have a lot of random stuff. read more

Guess Mira Mesa has just gotten another "99 Cents store" I put in quotes because there are plenty of items over that mixed in with everything else...see photo of ground beef. The other discount stores in the area are going to have to watch out though, since not only does this place have everything they have, but they have a fresh produce and grocery section. You can buy eggs, meat, and fruits and veggies here too. Looking at the quality of that stuff it's not bad either. If you're already in the store, you're gonna pick some of that stuff up. Aside from that there's your typical plastic junk, party favors, canned and dried goods. They all have that though. What makes this place better is just the wide aisles, high well lit ceilings and well organized shelves. Aside from the recognizable color scheme, it just feels like a regular store. read more

I came here randomly to look for stuff. I picked up a few essentials and non essentials. I got toilet paper, toys for my daughter, blistex, snacks and other stuff. I definitely liked this location. It was clean. It had restrooms in the back. So much random stuff. Everything ranged from 99 cents to $4.50. Not everything in this store is 99 cents. It seems as if everything is rounded to a dollar because on my receipt it said .9999! Lol! They sell produce and other random stuff. There's plenty of parking around this location. I spent a good bit of time there looking for gift bags, Birthday cards, tissue paper etc. When I found what I wanted, I stood in line for quite a while. Then when I finally got to the cash, the cashier (who claimed she was the manager when I asked to speak to one) said the gift bags I had belonged to a pack of 5 and that she would not sell me them. I told her they were all just hanging loose and that there were no packages of 5 she said someone must have opened them and refused to sell them and I walked out empty handed. I really like this store, I spend so much money here. I had my first bad experience today with a store manager by the name of Michelle. She was extremely rude and unprofessional. She was talking down on one of the cashiers in front of a line of customers. And then she told me to not open something I had already paid for while the receipt in her hand. She needs to go back to training on customer service. I urge the owner of this location seriously have a talk with her. I have always been helped by a young gentleman by the name of Josh. He needs to take over as the representative of this store location and be placed as a manager, it would definitely be in their best interest. Only reason I'm giving this place a four star and not a five they could have a better attitude. Quality service goes a long way. Only reason it's a four star and not a three what near dollar store do you know sells actual groceries not just frozen food ? For the price it's definitely worth it. I come here specifically for the yellow apples my son requests weekly for smoothies and apple chips. Aside from the fruits and vegetables they have an excellent selection of canned food as well as juices even kitchenwares. I swear by my non-stick pan I bought here on a whim. I went back the next day and bought their matching frying pan too. If you love Langer's juice they sell the medium sized bottle for $1 that's so much less than having to buy a gallon anywhere else for $6/7 if not more. All in all definitely an ideal grocery store I just wish they would branch out to the Midwest too. read more

This location is cleaner, newer and very convenient. Produce is fresher than other 99 Cent store places I've seen. They even have those spicy yellow banana peppers you can put into sinagang. And they even have Dole brand Filipino style spaghetti sauce and Jufran. Not even kidding! I am such a condiment queen and I think that fries (and maybe even life in general) is better with lots of different dipping sauces. So...you can imagine my joy when I found....wait for it...Carmelized Onion and Bacon flavored Heinz ketchup there last weekend!!!! And it tastes so bomb. I will probably come back to get some more to stash before they are all gone!! Only thing that kinda blows at this location is lack of parking and usually longer lines (not enough cashiers). I come here often on a weekly basis for simple groceries, the lines are usually long around the afternoon and they're majority of the time understaffed. I only ran into ONE rude older male cashier here that gives off snubby comments about what you buy and the quantity of items you have. Like any dollar store this is a wide selection of cheap stuff. However the name itself irks me because the name is 99 Cents only and yet more and more stuff is more than $0.99. They should change the name. On top of that there a little bit gouge-y.. For example you go in to buy a helium balloon it's $0.99 (which actually it's really a dollar because it's 99.99) & guess what- they charge you $0.49 for the helium! And they don't even offer weights for the balloon. (Compare that to Dollar Tree where the balloon including the helium is actually $1. As advertised.) Products low quality. They do keep the place pretty clean. That is the only good thing I can give them. Their locks don't work on the shopping carts, so their carts are all over mira mesa, which is actually a legal violation. They are responsible for their own carts and can be fined for not picking them up within some number of days. (Unfortunately that isn't enforced.) read more

Where do I begin...oh I know, THE LINES, they are absolutely out of control. These lines tend to extend through the whole dang isle almost all the time! Some employees tend to be rude but almost everyone who has rang me up has been a very nice person. The cashiers work fast (as they have to with these lines) and give good customer service at the same time. Way too many items are not marked which leads to sooo much confusion, an item which was labeled 1.99 turned out to be 8.99! No way can you confuse customers like this. The produce tends to be very good for what its worth, but the people who work in produce are not the nicest to say the least. I see many delinquents shop lifting almost every time I go there but nothing seems to be done about this. Over all, the contents in this store is very nice and neat which I can`t help but buying, but the lack of people checking, the occasional rude employee, un-marked and non-marked items, is what brings the rating to such a low score. read more

If you want to go downscale you'll find a decent selection of low-priced items. It's likely you will find at least one item selling for 99 cents that you pay more for at some other store. During my visit the cashiers appeared to be totally clueless - lines were long and my cashier took forever to check out a customer while they babbled leisurely together in Tagalog and the line behind me grew longer and longer. Then she completed the checkout on the register for this customer and she hadn't even finished scanning all of her items so she ended up having to do two checkouts for this same customer. People behind me in line were groaning and getting frustrated and angry. Not to worry - another cashier appeared and opened a new line and invited people in the back of my line to her new line but everyone in my line tried to move, so those who had been waiting the longest in my line found themselves at the back of the new line. The management of this store needs to get their cashiers some training. Parking is extremely limited; the store shares a medical building parking lot that was already notoriously difficult to find a space in before the new 99-cent store went up. Finally, in the big picture, does our well-established increasingly upscale Mira Mesa community really need another 99-cent store? read more

Now this is one of the nicest Grand opening for a 99 cent location. There are hundreds of people in line waiting for there chance at a 99 cent steal today and for tomorrow. (t.v's, holiday tree, coffee makers, an can openers, etc.) All for just 99 cent REFERENCE THE ADVERTISING THAT WENT FOR THE GRAND OPENING. Now this store is oddly located nozzle behind the carls jr, Walgreens, medical center and library off of camino Luiz in mira mesa. The parking lot for this store is very tiny. You would have to look for it off the main roads but they do have a large sign just off of camino Luiz that do display the 99 cent only logo. The store inside is beautiful of course. Lots of off brand items and some name brands. So come check out this location for yourself. read more

I come here a lot but unfortunately after today I will no longer come to this location. There is a lady by the name of Donna that has the most awful attitude, always standing around gossiping instead of working. I asked her where I could find the tissue paper and she rolled her eyes and walked away. I'm tired of getting dealt her attitude every time I shop here and she checks me out at the register.
