I like to review places and the amount of stars based on the category in which they operate. Everyone in New England has heard of The99, a type of homegrown fast casual restaurant we can almost claim on our own, even as they have ventured down into the Mid-Atlantic. When you walk into a 99, you usually know what you are getting. Nothing on the menu is going to blow you away based on the ingredient list or inventiveness of how they are used. I love the classic feel of a 99, it definitely reminds me of dining out with my folks 30+ years ago. The dark woods, the hostess stand and the usually quite busy long bar. It even smells like you would expect, but in a good way. During the height of the pandemic, this location specifically had up a giant circus like tent for many months for people to dine out. We have finally felt safe enough to begin returning to indoor dining with two little ones, who also enjoy the menu offerings of places like the Ninety-Nine. Now you head on in and pick where you want to go....some nice high tops, a booth or the bah. Even though it's standard for fast-casual, the portions are nice and the prices are in line with what you would expect for the quality. And the service is what has bumped this up to the highest possible. They are attentive and really care about their jobs, which is becoming rarer in the service industry post-COVID world. You get exactly what you pay for here, and the tie-in with the Red Sox while having two kids, where they get a free mac n cheese with some veggies and a side of dessert all thrown in with our meals is a nice touch for families. After having a miserable experience at the North Andover 99 we decided to give the Wilmington 99 a try because it had much better reviews & we have loved the 99 for almost 50 years. We were not disappointed. Our server Becky was delightful and very professional and attentive. The 99 is a very reliable spot. The servers are very nice too. The place is kept nice and clean. The tables are always washed right after a group leaves. I love the free popcorn; it is so good! I also love the cocktails. The sangria is my favorite. The menu has something for everyone. They have a $9.99 section and the food is great with big portions. I love the New Orleans Shrimp. The menu has everything from steak, to sandwiches, to fish, to salads, and more. The prices are reasonable and the portions are big. The potato skins for an appetizer are the best! This one saddens me. The 9's has been one of my favorite restaurants since I relocated to New England 40 years ago. Always go for the prime rib. They don't have it on the menu anymore. Their house specialty. And it's not on the menu anymore. The servers have been instructed to say it's due to COVID. Really? Is there a prime rib shortage? Maybe. Oh, wait. Here's a short list of restaurants that have NO PROBLEM getting it: Jimmy's Arlington Franks Cambridge Redstone American Grill Burlington Cafe Escadrille Burlington So either 99's buyer is massively incompetent or they dropped it and are hiding behind the lame excuse of COVID. Not a fan. I know this is a neighborhood hot spot, but I can't for the life of me figure out why. Everytime I have been here the service is incredibly slow. Today, our server had 6 tables and zero sense of urgency. We were greeted and seated immediately, but waited a solid 10 to 15 minutes to receive our drinks... because (our server was trying to streamline tasks) she brought drinks for ALL 6 tables at once. So, get everyone's drink order, get ALL the drinks, & drop drinks/take food orders. Possibly a good practice in theory, but it was frustrating being the 4th table on that list and seeing your drinks on a tray a across the room, and waiting. So close and yet so far away. We only had iced teas to drink and they tasted funny. It could have been the tea, but I felt like the water they used was the culprit. They give you popcorn to snack on in lieu of bread. And, my God, it was the stalest saltiest popcorn I've ever tasted. Inedible. If you value normal sodium levels, RUN! We had the country fried Chicken which comes with mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, and a biscuit smothered in a white gravy. It was served piping hot and was actually the highlight of this latest visit. We, also, had a grilled steak flat bread which could have been great, but was a huge disappointment. The description said bleu cheese, but there was NONE and "a drizzle" of horseradish cream which was a HUGE understatement. I don't mind horseradish, but it severely overwhelmed this dish. Sadly, since this is a well established and super convenient small town spot, they get away with a lot that they wouldn't otherwise in terms of quality and service. read more

Prime rib weekend is back at the 99's and this is the 18 oz. one I got back on Oct 23rd, last time they ran the promo. Got a good size bowl of seafood chowder with lots of crackers to start and a nice little desert after for around $22. This is an absolute steal. The 99 Restaurant has consistent, good food and drinks and the Wilmington locations is one of the best. The staff is friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. They regularly rotate their menu items and offer specials. On Thursdays they offer bone-in wings, and they play trivia on Thursday nights. They have a good selection of beers and a couple taps reserved for seasonal choices, like Leinenkugel lemon shandy in the summer. I always look forward to lobster season. They have a great lobster roll. Other seafood selections like baked cod, Cape Cod seafood trio, salmon and seafood chowder are available year round. Recently they've been featuring excellent flat bread pizza appetizers, and their boneless buffalo wings and boneless gold fever wings are always great. I also like the bistro salad. My boyfriend and I love this 99. They offer a huge selection of food at reasonable prices. I have been to many other 99 locations and this one is near the top of the list when it comes to service. Always reliable. We've been to other locations before where they don't even offer you a dessert menu because they are trying to rush you out the door to get other parties seated. We always say that we've never had a bad meal here. I'm glad we stopped in to try the spring menu. The lobster roll was delicious and had plenty of lobster. Standard 99. Good food, clean, etc - but.... Five stars for food safety!! We came in with 7 adults, my 3 year old nephew and my 10 month old son. My nephew is allergic to peanuts and eggs and after letting the server know, she let her manager know, who then came to our table to assure my sister the best care would be taken so there is no cross contamination. Utensils would be swapped and cleaned to be sure everything was safe. I applaud them for taking it so seriously! I don't remember her name but she was working this morning on February 1st. We have been a regular at 99restaurants for quite sometime... mostly pickup. Earlier, the food was good though sometimes condiments like cranberry sauce or tartar sauce were missing, but the quality rapidly degraded since lockdown. Two weeks back , ordered original crispy chicken and the chickens were extremely hard. Yesterday, ordered Chickem Permigiana . One huge weakness they don't bother expanding or hiring enough people to staff the place so you can't get an order in via phone without calling an hour before at 11. My wife and I have been eating at the 99 in Wilmington for years. Of course they have changed the menu often and redid the décor but it's always been a friendly place for a quick meal. The manager knows us and if she is at the door will seat us at our favourite booth, #41. The food is always good, the prices reasonable and the service very attentive. Our server Beth arrived and took drink orders, gave us menus and told us about the new specials. Most of the time, we listen politely but then order our regular choices. Although it was passed 4PM, Beth said we could still order off the lunch menu. She then quickly returned with our drinks, popcorn and took our meal order. My wife always orders the Baked Scrod with mash potatoes and I just love the Cod BLT with a side of corn. I also ordered the Vegetable Beef Soup and my wife ordered the Creamy Seafood Chowder. The soup was quite tasty and my wife says the chowder can't be beat. Since I am on a low carb diet, I removed the bun from my Cod BLT and just ate the ingredients as an entrée with salad. The cod was flaky and done just right. My wife had the baked scrod which she never finishes and the extra piece always ends on my plate. Her side of garlic mashed potatoes were seasoned just right and tasted like real potatoes and not boxed. I have had many of the other choices off the menu (beef, fish, pork and seafood) and they have always been cooked just right and tasty. The change in atmosphere here seemed to signal a lesser quality of food, beef in particular. I used to love pretty much everything on their menu. They serve a wonderful Salmon on a Plank now, but I would be hard pressed to say anything good about much of anything else on their menu. On an upbeat note, Linda and Paul at the bar are great. They really know what service means. Sadly, it goes the other way with one of the other bartenders (Sue). She is unattentive and surly on occasion. Over-all, the 99 is a good place to eat. The Wilmington 99 has it's problems. I have been coming here 1-2 times a week for years, and they just can't get it right. If I ask for a well-done burger, that's how I want it, and I will bring it back EVERY time that it's not right. I have had so many free meal cards given to me because they can't make a well -done burger that I've lost count.....at least 8 times in the last 2 years.
