Ordered takeout from Black Horse Tavern and it landed squarely in the realm of "acceptable." I had the swordfish with asparagus and a side Caesar. Portions were noticeably small for the price--nothing scandalous, just enough to make you wonder if this was the warm-up round. The swordfish itself was as middle-of-the-road as it gets. Edible, cooked properly, but carrying the energy of someone doing the bare minimum at their job. The salsa on top, however, was genuinely excellent--bright, balanced, and almost confusingly good compared to the rest of the dish. Asparagus was asparagus. The Caesar was exactly what a takeout Caesar tends to be: resigned to its circumstances. I can't comment on the dining room, but the server who handed off my order was polite and efficient, which I appreciated more than I should. Overall, worth trying once. I'll give it another shot, but next time I'll stick to something they're actually known for--and I'll eat it in-house instead of letting takeout do its usual sabotage. read more

Ordered take out on the Fourth of July from their web page. Order was taken, paid with a a credit card, included a tip. Website told us the oder would be ready at 7:15 pm. Drive to the restaurant to pick up our order and the restaurant was closed. They were closed on the Fourth of July, no mention of it on their we site. Had to call next day to get a refund. No apology offered by the manager. Terrible customer service and bad business. read more

A go-to for us in Winchester. Black Horse Tavern has it all. A lot of great seating inside (and outside in warmer weather months), solid bar menu, great food and ambience. The service has consistently been friendly and welcoming to us. The cobb salad is my favorite as far as food goes and my husband has enjoyed the reuben sandwich. We enjoy bringing our dog to side with us when we eat outside. If you're in Winchester and are looking for a bar to pop by, this is the best one to pick. Upon arrival for a party of 4 plus a baby we were seated at the first table outside and ask to have a high chair and two chairs and were told they couldn't give us two chairs in that spot. My daughter is 8 months pregnant and preferred to sit in a chair versus a bench and she was told no. We were given one menu for 4 people and the menu was very dirty. After waiting about 20 minutes the waiter who was inattentive ordered our drinks, then we needed to ask to order our food. The food arrived and every Plate had large chips on it. The chicken, artichoke and pasta dish was disgusting. The chicken appeared to be boiled and was white and rubbery. The Lamb burger was overcooked and rubbery. The kids pasta was elbow macaroni with just butter no cheese. (cheese was not offered for the pasta dishes. The filet was also overcooked. The waiter never checked in after receiving food to ask was everything ok. Son in Law went and told waiter about the quality of the food and he said he would speak to manager and discount. That was never received. My husband on the way out told another waiter that the plates were all chipped and she said ok I'll tell them. Our bill was over $250.00 and not worth a penny. This was one of the worst meals were have had. Also another new policy is to run a credit card before ordering. A bit tacky to me for a restaurant in Winchester. read more

Good lunch at Black Horse Tavern! I started with their Essex Clam Chowder which was really tasty. It's thinner than most chowders and has a unique buttery flavor, which I really enjoyed. I then ordered the Steak Tip Wedge Salad. The blue cheese dressing on top was so tasty. The steak tips had a good flavor too! Only thing that was a little eh was underneath there was a bunch of older yellow lettuce. Still edible but I was surprised they included it. However, the portion was good and it filled me up! I came to downtown Winchester before and saw this place but went elsewhere that day. Always wanted to come back and try it. I did today for lunch and am so glad I did! They have a variety of food on the menu, from sandwiches, chicken, steak dinners, meatball and spaghetti, Shepards pie, even pizza. I ordered the chicken tavern, marinated grilled chicken, with rice pilaf and vegetables. Carrots in a glaze sauce. My chicken came with a sauce. I have to say I really enjoyed it. The chicken was tasty, cut in 3 slices. The sauce was warm on top and the glazed carrots were good. My friend had the cob salad with steak tips. It was iceberg lettuce with onions, tomatoes and a blue cheese dressing. My friend liked it a lot. It was a full lettuce, not cut into slices so a bit hard to eat but was good. All in all, a good experience. Glad I came. Would come back for another lunch or dinner. The restaurant is cozy, with big TVs to watch sports. The owner's behavior was bizarre and off-putting. He came over and nearly took my glass of non-alcoholic beer, even though it still had about 2 inches of beer in it. I asked him to please leave it. Minutes later (still an inch of beer in the glass), he walked across the restaurant and took it without saying a word. My best guess is he was worried my kids might knock it over, which I can understand - kids spill things. A friendly request to move the glass would have been fine. What bothered me was the passive-aggressive way he handled it. It's his restaurant and he can run it however he likes, but his behavior made our family feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. read more

Last night which was Valentine's Day they had a special menu that included a surf and turf and a lobster ravioli!!! While Black Horse Tavern can have long waits at times, we tend to come here at off peak hours on the weekends or early on weekend nights. They will take down your name and give you a call when there is a table available. There is plenty of parking further up the street in the public parking lot (free 2 hour parking 8 am - 6 pm Monday through Friday, unlimited otherwise). We are big fans of their pizza - specifically the meat lovers. The crust is very thin and crispy with a good amount of sauce and meat. We don't love the burgers and find that they are not well seasoned and a bit oily. Be warned that this place gets LOUD. It is quite nice to visit when the weather is nice as the windows all open and lets in fresh air. read more

If you want to go here on a Friday night expect an 40-60mins wait. We were told 30mins and they do take your phone number and contact you when a seat is available. The space isn't very big which I think is one of the factors of the long wait. The menu has a lot of great sounding meals - ended up just getting calamari as an app (came on lettuce which was strange and some aioli sauce not marinara) and a pizza with two toppings but everything on the menu is a little too pricey for me to consistently come to and spend when theres other places for less. I was visiting Oak Grove Cemetery (both parents there) and someone took the shot glass I leave there as when I visit I take a shot and leave a shot. To put it politely I was upset. I look for a pub close by and Black Horse popped up. I went there explained the situation as I needed a shot glass. Not only did they give me a shot glass but the said my drink was on the house. I saw a lot of reviews about poor service which we did not receive at all. In fact, our visit was very positive and the food as well! I met a friend while passing through and we were looking for some bar food. The burger I had at the Black Horse Tavern might be one of the best I've had in a long while. I got the Gorgonzola burger with bacon. The food came out piping hot, which I loved. (Fries are best when they can burn your mouth). I asked for my burger charred which they obliged and the bun was not overpowering. Honestly I don't have much to say. It was completely the experience that you'd expect from a bar/grill. What a nice spot. We had the chance to visit with the entire family on Saturday night, 7/10/21. Beautiful setting with outside seating and inside seating with wide-open windows for the summer breeze! We started with appetizers (coconut shrimp and wings). Both were fantastic and plentiful. Our server was fantastic....around and ready to help but not overbearing. Main meals included fish & chips, Sachem Burger and two fish taco's. All meals were awesome. Portions were great and served on time and with a smile. Our first trip to the Black Horse Tavern was for a quick dinner before our main event. We arrived at 5:30 pm and the place was already rocking. Although we were informed of a half hour wait, we were seated in 15 minutes. We were impressed by a big menu of apps, salads, burgers, and a variety of main dishes. Oh yeah, and some flatbreads and pizzas too. You can easily find something to fit your taste. We just ate burgers, that were juicy, tasty and cooked to order (medium rare for me). Here is a switch, we had no drinks, as we were headed to a bourbon tasting, but I did observe that they had a decent beer wine and drink list. The place has a cool vibe, but being totally full was a bit noisy, but it isn't a dealbreaker by any means. Pub fare you will enjoy. Have fun and go there. read more

The ambiance and service of this place is stellar. I love the patio and the overall atmosphere. The food was okay and the drink selection was also okay. I would say it's definitely worth a try but it definitely wasn't mind blowing. I got the prosciutto, fig and caramelized onion flat bread with a blueberry ale. I wish the flatbread had more fig and maybe even a balsamic drizzle to tie all the flavors together. We had truffle Parmesan chicken wings and you couldn't really taste the truffle. The pesto pizza my friend had was good and my friends seemed to enjoy their entrees. Maybe I just made a wrong choice! Definitely worth checking out and making your own opinion tho. read more

We stopped in for a an early dinner and we wanted to try a new tavern. The place has a nice vibe and the staff were great. The food however might be some of the most exceptionally mediocre pub food I've ever had. I wish someone prepared us, a lot of the reviews said it was good. People are either trying to be too nice or are lacking taste buds. The calamari was probably from a frozen bag and was tasteless rubber. The buffalo chicken was ok but not great and the clam chowder was boring and odd tasting. We had a a ravioli which was the high point of the meal but at this point the bar was quite low. I love pub food and I think this place should up their game. If you go then I would recommend you spend the money on cocktails and fries, I assume the pizza might be ok but not go for the rest of the menu. Very poor service. Told it would be a 30 minute wait, ended up being about 90 minutes. Absolutely no urgency from any staff, 2 hostesses spent the entire time gossiping or otherwise on their phones. No visit from a manager or anyone. While waiting, multiple diners came to the podium to ask how much longer for their food to be delivered. Seemed to only be one waitress working on a Saturday night, and she wasn't too bothered to check on our table or the others near us. Food wasn't worth the wait in the slightest. I like the ambiance here. On a cold night you can come in and find a warm place to sit and have a cold Guinness. On a warm night you can come in with windows open for a breeze to sit and have a cold Guinness. Either way you win. I'd actually give it 3.5 stars if Yelp allowed - a good place to meet up with a friend or two. 3 stars is typically a place I thought was decent but wouldn't run back to. 4 stars is a place I like and try to get to. I like BH enough to always recommend it as a meeting place but needs a certain something to get to 4 stars - maybe expanded plant based apps or a craft stout on tap? hmm not sure. The food is decent - actually I think the menu has improved dramatically over the past 2 years. I of course often review from the plant based vegan angle and will drop some comments with that in mind. The veggie burger isn't bad. The cauliflower app, which I think is a take on a Nepalese dish that I'd eaten originally at the Indian/Nepal restaurant in Ball Sq Somerville, would be good if they made that all vegan. I think they toss egg batter in there from what they told me. We make a version of this at home which is fantastic. If they could make it vegan, then it would be another menu item that would appeal to everyone and expand their customer base further - hey why leave out 5-10% of the people (and a growing number?). Service is always ok when I go. I noticed some complaints in other reviews. Maybe it varies based on the server but my experience has been solid on this front. Bottom line, it's Winchester, there aren't too many places to go (though that's changing) for a casual meal and drink at 8pm.
