As good as it gets indeed. This store took me back. I don't live in the area but come up a lot and there really isn't any store like this in Los Angeles anymore. The new books are respected not just thrown in. The employees are knowledgeable and friendly. I found what I was looking for and books I thought I would never see again. They have figures and statues and older star wars collectibles. I'm a kid in a candy store. If I wind up moving to Sac I will make this my store. On my last visit the staff was nice enough to tell me "hi" as I entered and "bye" as I left. The store was clean with a clean bathroom open to customers which is always good. Comic selection is ok at best when compared with the A1 comics on sunrise. However, they do have a great selection on toys compared to the other location, so it kinda evens out. Prices are retail so don't expect to find great deals. Overall it was a good experience as I found the toy I was looking for. Will definitely be back. read more

I've been shopping at A-1 Comics since I was 12 years old, so...What? 28 years? Yeah. Since the day my mom took me in to buy me a copy of Wolverine #1 as a birthday gift, I've been hooked. The store has moved locations several times in the intervening years (and expanded to include locations in Roseville and Folsom) but has always been very clean and well organized with an absolutely stellar selection of comics, new and old. My dad actually designed the box tables they're now using for their back issue storage and display. And they had two copies of the most recent IDW book to feature some of my artwork, so it made for a fun sort of collaboration to find my dad's handiwork alongside my own in the same comics shop. The staff here have always been very friendly and helpful. On my most recent visit, James was very cordial and knowledgeable about the most recent releases and talked me into picking up a new book which I ended up loving. My only hiatus from shopping here was due to my living at the other end of the state for a decade and a half, but every time I'm in town to visit family, I always make it a point to drop in and pick up a few comics. read more

Terrible costumer service. Zero to none social skills. Took cards out of the hard plastic sleeves which is fine. But then took the cards out of the smaller sleeves, selling me cards with no sleeves at all ultimately ruining the condition of my cards. After I specifically told them to leave them in the sleeves. Will never return here to buy cards again. They need to just stick to comics! read more

I filled out a saver, but once I came in upon realizing one of the newest comics was in their shop, they informed me they did not have a saver for me. I proceeded to special order the comic. (Since for some reason A-1's only seem to receive 1 issue of the newest X-Files comics during each release) It's been weeks now since I ordered this comic...still no call or anything. Came into this store looking for Pokémon cards as my son is a huge fan. I don't know anything about Pokémon so I spoke with a young blonde girl who introduced herself as Jess in hopes of some guidance. Jess spoke to me in a very condescending tone as if I was some kind of idiot for not knowing anything about Pokémon.. but to be honest, she didn't really sound like she knew what she was talking about either. I ended up not buying any cards after all because of the way she made me feel. I continued to walk around the store and while looking at comics, I heard her yelling at employees from across the store. This is extremely unprofessional and made me as a customer feel very uncomfortable, so I left. 10/10 don't recommend. read more

A-1 Comics, owned by Brian Peets (played in the NFL), fulfills the comic book nerd's fantasy. Brian and his wife do a great job meeting the needs of newbies, casual fan, and hard core collectors like myself. I have bought from Brian at WonderCon, San Diego Comicon, and his bricks and mortar fortress. When I am up in Sacramento, I always drive by to see what he has. The old store on Madison was great, but I absolutely love the bank vault. One time, I asked Brian for a copy of Richie Rich #1, and he just happens to have an affordable copy. A-1 probably has more back issues than any other shop in California, especially Silver Age and plenty of Golden Age. Brian provides great service at a great price. The older comics are very fairly graded. If you want the new stuff, old stuff, action figures, expensive statues, A-1 probably has it. As a hard core collector, who has bought in London, New York City, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and annually attends San Diego Comicon (even before it became trendy), I highly recommend A-1 Comics as world-class. read more

A-1 is hands down the best comic book shop from San Francisco, to the East and South Bay as well as the Sacramento area - also the most massive collection. There is a reason there are three A-1 comic shops - this company is simply the best. Also, no store is more fair in regards to buying a collection. As I'm leaving the area and had to part with my collection of over 40 years in a rather quick fashion, I shopped many stores ASAP. More than a few owners tried to really low ball and take advantage of me. Some would give a decent price and offer more with the caveat that if I didn't bring in my collection within that day they would pay said price. Brian at A-1 was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and friendly. I don't give everyone a great rating, however, A-1 has earned it in spades. read more

I haven't walked into a comic book store since I was a child. I needed some superhero toys for my nephews and was a little overwhelmed not knowing what to pick. Thankfully, J.W. was there and incredibly helpful. He was so kind and patient and told me the backstory for all the characters we were checking out. In the Sacramento Area as far as comic shops go A-1 is hands down the best. Both locations have MASSIVE selections of back issues, new releases, and graphic novels. They are also one of the top spots in the area for Magic the Gathering, and Yu Gi Oh tornaments. All of the employees are alwas very helpful, and informative on upcoming events and promotions. My only negative is not really the fault of A-1, but compared to large retailers like Target or Walmart, the prices are a little high. The reason they dont lose a star is because the In-store experience makes up for the nickles and Dimes you lose. read more

They carry trades, t-shirts and a dazzling selection of action figures, statues and collectibles. They also carry gaming books and supplies, as well as cards. Prices are reasonable, especially for back issues, and the store holds frequent sales on weekends. I have always found the staff to be helpful and conscientious, and if they don't have something in stock, they will call their sister store in Roseville or recommend other options. I'm not your usual comic book nerd. I don't like super hero stuff, and I can't ever imagine doing anything related to comic cards/games/things-that-require-costumes. I like graphic novels that involve (usually angst-y) illustrative writing. This store is big. It's got a great selection. If you're into more traditional stuff - this is like a comic book wet dream place for you. But for those of us who sort of stand out like a sore thumb, it's almost as good as your going to get in sacramento. I found a few Top Shelf Comix here as well as some buried other indie comics/graphic novels. You're going to have to scan through the shelves of "traditional" comics, but they are there. read more

I like this place. I've been here many times and each time I go, the staff is respectful as well as helpful and they seem to had adequate knowledge or the store. I can spend a lot of time here if I want to, but usually I can get in and get out quick which I love. some times I just need to get a quick read. I'm not sure what days but they have card playing events from open to close. the store itself is large to me and they have comics as well as figurines, calendars, tees, etc. and it is neat and organized. read more

Easily the best comic store in Sacramento and the surrounding area. This place has such an tremendous selection it's incredible. They offer variant covers at reasonable prices and they always have a deep back issue selection. If you're into gaming, they also have a good size gaming collection from CCGs to RPGs. They offer bags and boards at reasonable prices and they have a good size kids selection of comics as well. They have a huge graphic novel section. Everything here is overpriced. I saw a lego set purchased from Ross with the original price tag scribbled out with a black marker. The price was even still visible through the marker!! It was set at 15$ and A1 was charging 40$!!! The set was selling brand new online for 25$ so I can guarantee by that example alone the person in charge is unaware of google. Literally never going back to this place. Couldn't believe my eyes. Check out eBay or amazon instead of you're looking for something specific. It'll save you the trip. Also the male employees (2) were flirting hardcore with the only female employee and had been doing so for the entirety of my visit (about 20 mins) terribly unprofessional to say the least. read more

The enormous selection of comics at this place is my primary reason for going. I stopped in yesterday, and they have tons of new, independent books, as well as the vintage classics, like the original Dr. Strange line. They also have a game room, with a huge selection, and a packed events calendar, which means the regulars have a reason to stay regular. Overall, great selection, great environment. read more

I've shopped at A-1 Comics since they opened at Manzanita & Madison in the late 80's - Brian has invariably been courteous, helpful, and informative in all dealings. He has engendered a considerate work force through the decades that tries to provide customer service in a dicey industry for it. Some of these "reviews" on here seem like they are confused about what industry we're talking about. Gaming/comics always has, and always will be inundated with questionable (at best) personality types and difficult purchases. The fact that they have survived longer than any other Sacramento-area Friendly Local Gaming Store (FLGS) is a testament to Brian's business and personal acumen. This is a fantastic comic/gaming shop. They have a huge selection of comics and gaming supplies. I love shopping for miniatures there and don't mind driving from Yuba City to do so. My first Saturday in Sacramento (I'm originally from San Diego) I was recommended to go to A-1 Comics for their yugioh tournaments they host. I arrived and asked politely if they still host yugioh tournaments and the guy went nuts... I understand some people should not be allowed to play yugioh but his explanation was off the charts. They cancelled hosting yugioh tournaments for good. His excuse was, "Yugioh players are loud, start fights and are messy..." Yeah, I totally get it, but saying that was a total turn off. I have high expectations, coming from comic shops that set rules down for players but welcomed them in like family down in San Diego. Honestly, his response to us could have been better. Also, his action towards players could have been ALOT BETTER. It's a shame really. read more

went to the sale at the roseville store had heard bad reviews on that store (not the main a1) but i was in the area for the day so i went to check out the sale. i was shopping and the clerk behind the counter started yelling at a big guy tryin to look at the magic singles? some binder anyways. he said the following "you need to be more clear what you r*ckin want which binder do you want to see, i want to fk in fight you right now out in the parking lot!, then swung at the guy barely missing him and hitting the glass counter almost breakingt it." if this is how they treat the people who try to buy their magic cards i would recommend noone EVER goes there and the owners should be notified at this behaviour. i am amazed that the cops werent called. other then that guy everyone was great i was rung up they all said thank you for buying . read more

Scammy & Scummy First off I grew up going to A-1 comics in Roseville and I have been to this location before and wow how things have changed inside comic book stores. It used to be about going to find the latest hot comic or in demand book at the time but this A-1 Comics discourages that notion by taking brand new comics and pricing them well above cover value because they know a book is hot and collectors will pay it. I noticed 2 comics I wanted to buy that came out within the last month one was 19.99 with a 3.99 cover price and another was 12.99 with a 3.99 cover price this simply is WRONG. I should be rewarded for seeking out a specific book and be able to buy it at cover price but instead A-1 is going to try and take the customers for everything they have just to get the book they want. Not to mention I brought my 2 daughters with me and they didn't have anything for kids under 10 like 0. There are 3 monthly Scooby Doo comics published by DC comics that are fairly popular actually and all they had was one single issue of a Scooby Doo Team-Up that was dog-eared on the rack and that wasn't going to work for my 9-year-old daughter at all. And to make matters worse they didn't have any Spongebob Squarepants comics either for my 6-year old that left her in tears, not even a single issue and it has been being published for years now and has almost 100 issues you would think they would have a few on hand to purchase. NOPE. So if you have kids and are trying to get them more interested in reading or comic books this is definitely not the place to take them. Most likely they will be very disappointed which in essence ruins any kind of trip out with the kids shopping. If you have children you will understand this sentiment. Additionally, when we asked for help the employee that helped us seemed clueless and just went and looked in all the same spots we did like I can't find a book? I was more inquiring what the hell was going on and why they didn't have anything for kids but the lack of customer service or willingness to put forth an effort was lacking in so many ways coupled with the fact that they are price gouging for brand new comics was when I decided to leave the store without buying anything and I won't be returning to this A-1 store not gonna call it a comic shop because they don't deserve that title. They seemed to have more trade paperback collections in the store than anything and I couldn't be more disinterested in TPB's even if you paid me to like them. They must get them cheaply at cost and are trying to really maximize those profits at this location. I would avoid this store if you are a real comic book collector it seemed full of employees who don't like/love comics they are just trying to push the bottom line which I can appreciate to an extent being a businessman myself but man talk about rolling around in the gutter to get where you want and obviously this attitude is coming from the ownership on down. For about 8 years i have been going to A-1 comics to pick up mtg booster packs.during the last few years i have noticed that the boosters always seem loosely packaged and when opened i notice glue marks at the top center inside the wrapping (a clear warning sign that a pack has been opened and re-sealed) not to mention i haven't gotten one good card in the last 2-3 years of purchasing packs here. But i guess it makes sense considering how extensive your singles selection is. You have lost my business, my respect and whatever will i had to be quite about this. read more

I've been a long-term customer having first purchased from A-1 at SDCC back in 2006. I recently made a purchase where they had shown a comic with an estimated grade of 6.5 on the front cover for several hundred dollars. I examined the comic in the bag and decided to make the purchase. Having purchased from them numerous times in the past I did not insist on examining the book closer. I trusted the grade on the cover of the comic after a precursory review. This time however when I got the comic home and was preparing to rebag the comic into mylar, I found that they had attached a very small note on the back of the comic that indicated it was restored, both color touched and multiple sides trimmed. At first I wasn't too concerned and contacted them to see about returning the comic and expecting to receive an in-store credit. Instead I was told they have a no return policy. I only purchase higher end raw comics from very few dealers who I've developed long-term relationships with that I believe are ethical. A-1 burnt me with a misleading grade estimate. My mistake here was trusting A-1. Don't make the same mistake I did no matter how long you've been their customer or how much you spend. read more

Things have changed for the worst at the A1 Comics Sacramento location. The reason for this updated review is due to the fact of the difficulty to purchase the more higher end comic books. Now I understand that books have to be processed and priced. Where the issue comes into play when these books are processed and priced, the people in control of the store quickly tell you that the books are only available in the live sales. Why I should wait for a live sale to purchase the book if I'm here now willing to pay the price? It brought me joy to buy books at this store but now it seems only the live sales customers only matter. The local people get treated like garbage. I really don't know what the reason why the local people are met with such resistance when trying to buy the higher end books but it truly disappoints me. I'm sure it makes no difference to them about losing a loyal customer but this needed to be said. read more
