I give this hardware store 5 stars for being the "David" against the Goliath big-box stores. The owner is very nice and helpful, and the best thing is it's walking distance from the neighborhood. Yes, it's small, but the owner has maximized the shelf space with an amazing amount of inventory. It's best just to ask for what your looking for, rather than searching on your own. I came here to get a few keys duplicated. One key was already a duplicate but the other was an original. The duplicate keys produced did not work. I understand that a duplicate of a duplicate key may not work but the other key was an original. I paid $10 for keys that didn't work. Parking is also pretty terrible- no private lot and street parking is nonexistent. read more

Mixed feelings. The owner can be helpful in finding things in the crowded store, and the location is convenient for me. BUT, we went there today with our screen door (which was a pain to transport) after my husband had talked to the owner who said he could fix the door. My husband had told him the spring was broken. Instead of doing what we needed, the owner put on a new wheel (and we already owned some, at home) and did not put on the spring, which was what my husband had specifically asked for. We could have done the same half-assed repair job ourselves, for free, but the guy charged $16, and when my husband said "What about the spring?"the guys says "They don't make them anymore." Really? Every screen door now has to drag across the threshold? I don't think so. :-(. Boo! No stars for that trip. Will think twice before going back. read more

This well stocked hardware store has been a great asset to our neighborhood. I've had window screens fixed, keys made, bought brooms, and even vacuum belts. You need it and they have it! By any chance they don't, they will order it. This family owned business has that personal yet always professional touch that is always a pleasure to do business with. If you're tired of the Home Depot lines, go here! This shop is a a great local find! The owner is very friendly and he has a surprisingly vast stock of goods. Super friendly, helpful. This is great owner run store that carries tons of stuff, given its tiny size, is happy to help, to best of their knowledge and availability. Is everything perfect, nope, but given limited alternatives (lack of helpful friendly assistance at home depot, querying online or Amazon, driving many miles to friendly chains) it's nice to have a neighborhood store that has the missing piece needed to finish the home project. Particularly for those of us without a garage full of hardware and supplies. Does the big chain save us money? Sometimes, but not always. Only if you believe all advertising. Wake up to reality... recognize that convenience doesnt mean wandering around for 10 minutes trying to find the item you're seeking or someone to ask ( who often doesnt know). read more

Small store that utilizes every inch of its retail space. I tried looking for what I needed on my own (safety goggles) but basically couldn't find anything in the store because it is quite overwhelming inside. However, the guys that work there are very helpful and it's quite apparent that they know the store and where everything is located. As soon as I asked for what I needed, the man working behind the counter immediately pointed them out to me quickly and without hesitation. I appreciate the honesty and candor of the gentleman behind the counter. For me, it was a service request rather than a merchandise hunt. My service request: cut a steel bar (shower, towel rack), in order to fit the dimensions of the door. I called several places: Home Depot, Orchards, and Anawalt, unfortunately without success. Called A-1 Hardware, confirmed that he would be able to complete the objective. His only request from me, the customer, is that I mark the location of the cut exactly. No prob. Upon arrival, he greeted me, asked me for the steel bar, proceeded to cut, and charged me an agreeable amount. I left satisfied. I agree with other reviewers that the store is packed with merchandise - however I think overall this store and its owner are great. read more

I discovered this gem when I was looking for some one to do some re-screening for me. I, for one, love neighborhood hardware stores. When I lived in Glassell Park, my dad and I often went to Verdugo Hardware because even if we had to pay a few pennies more, what you got back in knowledgeable help was well worth it. This is how I feel about A-1 Hardware. It's a tiny shop but you will find almost everything you need and the service and the knowledge makes everything worth the try. I hate going into Home Depot where most of the help don't know the difference between a hammer and a screw driver. The MAIN thing I hate about the larger hardware stores like Home Depot, Lowes, etc., is that you have to ASK for help....no one ever asks you if they can help you first. Kills me. I always feel like I am bothering them, after I've chased one of them down. A-1 Hardware is a one stop shop. They even make keys! The owner is a very nice man and I love how he tries to get his teenage son to help. Makes them all the more normal. I love family owned and run businesses. I went during a weekday afternoon. They have a parking lot in the back but that's about the only perk. Pretty big hardware store for a mom and pop type place but I went through every aisle and couldn't find what I was looking for. Another smaller store had it. The front facade is deceiving, the store is stocked from floor to the very ceiling with hardware and other home-related accessories. The aisles are so narrow that two people are barely able to get around each other. Service is prompt and knowledge-able. Why run to one of those "chain" hardware stores when you can give a local business your money. Shop local to support family run local businesses. read more

I purchased spray paint from them, and the first can was defective. I took it back to exchange and the owner insinuated that I was lying. So I exchanged the spray paint and got another one....same problem, it stopped working. I took it in, and yes the owner gave me my money back, but wasn't very nice about it, again, insinuating that I was lying. Never again, I'll stick to home depot. read more

Small store, with everything you need hardware wise! They have metered parking in front of the store. Walked into the store on a Saturday evening and there was one person working. I needed to get some keys duplicated and he did his job, took about 10 minutes. We were in and out pretty quick, the store is pretty messy though, But other than that my experience with A-1 Hardware was great. Small local store, good vibe, plenty of parking available in parking lot. I was looking for nuts and bolts hardware and they have a wall full of it. I took a decent amount of time (5-6 actual minutes) to find two bolts, two washers, two nuts, and three screws. While I prefer shopping without assistance they were attentive but not annoying at offering help. I only give four stars as they charged me $3 for what seems like .85 cents worth of hardware, but that's the price I pay for not having to deal with the zoo that is the Home Depot. Realistically I probably only would have saved a dollar traveling all of the way over there though. read more

I had a small project for a friend I was helping in Culver City and needed anchor bolts and screws and some paint for a repair. It was so nice to walk into a place that hade about 8 customers and about three employees available to help out. I got directed to each item, picked them out and paid within 10 minutes. Try that at Home Ditzo or one of the other big messes. The amount I paid above their price was insignificant to the gas, time and sanity I saved by going to this local family run place. Super friendly and helpful man behind the counter. Took care of my key copies immediately. Even took the time to learn me a lil' bit about how key duplication only takes a few hours to learn but the true learning is in the experience of understanding only gained over time of the circumstance of why keys may not work and how to think beyond the key in one's hand to know how to cut it properly. Not a well-stocked store, and it's very disorganized. At first glance it seems they have a wide selection of screws and small hardware, but all of the wood screws are stainless steel, which aren't ideal for projects requiring more discreetly colored hardware. They have a few cleaning products, but they didn't have Murphy's oil soap or any finishing oil. I'm restoring an old chest of drawers, so all in all this store had none of the items I needed. read more

I needed help with a Delta shower head I purchased recently. I called ahead and the gentleman on the phone said he could take care of it for me. I drove down, and in 10 minutes, and for less than the price of lunch, he adjusted the shower head exactly how I wanted it. Awesome service, very friendly. Will come back. read more

Delurking to belatedly give props to this small operation. Ron B. hits the nail on the head: The service here is eager and genuinely helpful. I came in looking for a replacement long screw & bolt for a vacuum; obviously not going to be a big-money sale. The counterman could have just pointed me toward the wall, but he pretty much did the trial-and-error for the right size himself, with no pressure and a mellow attitude. I have mixed feelings about this place. It's packed pretty tight and items can be difficult to find. I was looking for some medium and candelabra lamp sockets and even with the clerk's help it took over 10 minutes going through jumbled and disorganized boxes to find what I needed. They did have them though and since these are sockets that aren't available at Home Depot, I was pleased. I purchased 2 medium bulb sockets, 1 candelabra socket, 1 candelabra bulb, a toggle switch and a 6ft 2-prong extension cable and before the clerk rung me up he told me that all the prices marked on the items were old. I said "OK" but when he rung me up all of the prices were more than double what they were marked and a couple were almost quadrupled! As I mentioned, Home Depot didn't have these bulb sockets, though they had all the other stuff, but I didn't have time to make another trip there so I paid the "revised" price. Later when I calculated it out, I had ended up paying over twice what I would have paid by going to Home Depot and then ordering the light bulb sockets on Amazon. I'm all for supporting Mom & Pop businesses but it's painfully obvious why they can't compete with the Big Name stores. On the other hand, the clerk did give me a quick practical demo on how to wire everything together (I'm a complete noob at electricity and stuff) which was nice. Employee advice at Home Depot has always been hit or miss for me. Will I go back? Probably. They're just down the street from me so if I need something right away then I suppose it's worth paying the premium. read more

One of the smallest hardware stores I have ever been in, but I see that as a plus. There is no problem finding staff because because the place is so small. You simply ask where you can find "x" and then the staff takes you to it. There is no endless trips walking up and down store aisles as would be the case at Orchard Supply Hardware and especially Home Depot. read more

This is a good, solid local hardware store, perfect for when you just need a few items and don't want to make the drive to the big orange store! I have a small contracting business, so it is very handy for me to stop in here. No lines, no waiting, and helpful, friendly staff. Sure the prices might be a little higher than the big-box stores, but gas is over $4.00 a gallon - so for me, it's worth it to not have to make the drive. read more
