I've been using A1 storage to store all the crap I want but I don't want in my apartment since I moved to Los Angeles. I'm assuming A-1 Self Storage is a smaller operation than Public Storage. It's probably still corporate, but I feel like I'm supporting the little guy? Hmm... the more I think about it the less likely it is that it's a mom and pop operation. When I began my search for a storage unit, I had no idea what a range I would find. My experience with storage units was limited to a few grungy places that got the job done, and felt kinda creepy and dirty, but served their purpose essentially. Boy was I wrong! A1 is less than a block away from a Public Storage, so for added juxtaposition I got a direct, back to back comparison. At PS, I walked in a cramped, dark office, rang a bell, waited, waited...finally a woman came out who was friendly but far more interested in her computer than in me, took me upstairs to show me the units she had, all of which were pretty shoddy as I expected, but fine. She said they were open only during business hours because that's how they keep out the "vagrants" and was very cheerful the whole time, but the whole place creeped me out a bit. Then I went to A1. I pulled into their large, clean parking lot and walked into their brightly lit office, adorned with storage-related items for sale, a sweeping countertop, and a free coffee station. I was greeted by a woman named Alma who asked if she could help and offered me candy from a bowl on the counter. It felt more like a swanky car rental place than a storage unit building and for a moment I wondered if I was in fact, in the right spot. Alma showed me around and I was astounded at how clean and brightly lit the place was. The elevator ran better, everything was in better condition, and the hours were longer than the other companies I'd looked at, and the price was the same. When I pressed about after-hours accessibility, Alma said it's not in their policy, but they could occasionally make exceptions for business related needs, which mine were. She hooked me up with the manager, who listened to my needs and granted me 24 hour access, and they got me all squared away. Every time I stop by I feel like I'm part of something welcoming; the added touches like the candy bowl and the Toys for Tots and charity drives they do, along with the friendly staff and the clean, organized manner they present, makes me grateful every time I go there that I found them. They even have music playing in the hallways! I never thought storage could be a fun experience! As I've been there for a few months, I've discovered one drawback: the carts you can borrow to tote stuff around are only available during business hours. I take this as a fair sign of responsibility on their part, but sometimes I wish I could work around that rule. Also, as I've been around for a few months, I discovered another added courtesy. They'll call, email, and call again to remind me to pay rent, which is great, because I'm terrible about that. Their customer service is great, and the manager told me that A1 was started by a guy who was looking for his own storage unit, and, disgusted by the choices he saw, knew he could do it better. Amazing storage unit place with friendly and helpful employees who perform exemplary customer service

This is by far the nicest self storage I've been to in LA. It's super clean and Aleli is super nice! I recommend it to everyone! Make sure to stop by because I think they fill up quick. Other self storages are nice but this one puts customer service first and cleanliness as well. It's also really close to other attractions in North Hollywood so while you're moving in you can go eat or hang out downtown NoHo. There's also a really cool spot to eat Mexican food next door! If I could give them less I would. They were friendly at first. The day I went to clear out my unit it was trashed. Only other people that could have gotten in the unit besides myself was there staff. They ransacked my unit. And took what they wanted. And left it trashed. read more

Pros: Clean, safe, well lit, air conditioned interior, friendly staff. Initially affordable. Cons: Regular, frequent rate increases. Provided you aren't planning on storing your things very long, you'll have great luck at this facility. It is convenient, easily accessible, and the staff in friendly and helpful. However, it seems that every 6-9 months, there are sizable rate increases of about 15% or so. As units are all priced differently depending on their location in the facility it is difficult to tell if units are priced consistently or if these rate increases are aimed at those who using the unit long term because they know you probably won't want to move it. Either way, it feels wrong and unjustified. I can't possibly believe that business costs increase at the rate they raise rates, although I guess you have to pay for all the new customers first month half off. read more

know this may sound like i'm angry, well I'm very angry. Nothing is a lie and if I don't speak up they will keep being awful. DO NOT - DO NOT - I REPEAT DO NOT GO TO THIS FACILITY. It's a rip-off and your things are in danger of getting roaches,ants, smoke from bum(older homeless gentleman) that stays overnight and leaves during day. I asked why he does this why smoke where antiques and special mementos are stored, he responded "I do because I can" Place is a joke. I FELT unhappy with the customer service the lady gave me, I can't recall name but she was all attitude.Secondly the gentleman that took $500 payment from my visa and without my consent. I know they took my things and then took my money, then said they auctioned the rest. They took my visa funds, yet they auctioned my belongings? I was away on vacation I never got lien notice. Insurance is a joke, they make you pay $15 monthly yet when you are robbed they make it impossible to get your insurance claim. they deny insurance I feel violated. My experience overall was no good. They owe me way more than just $500. It will not be ok until they refund my money or approve my claim. They are nasty and should not be trusted with your treasures. SERIOUSLY DO NOT TRUST THEM! To the management please reconsider what you do to people, this is not ok. Please contact me if you wish to resolve this very personal matter. read more

We came to A1 storage after a TERRIBLE experience with another storage company, so while you think 5 stars for a storage place might be a little overkill, they really exceeded our expectations. We only had a storage unit for about 6 weeks- the first month on one of their "move-in" specials, which was very reasonable, and then they pro-rated the additional two weeks for us. We sprung for a "drive-up" unit, which was clean and spacious. They had excellent hours for access to your unit (from memory 6am-10pm) The customer service was excellent- they were really good about emailing and calling to follow up, and make sure we had a chance to call in and see the space before we actually came to moving our stuff in. If we are being honest, getting a storage unit is about as fun as having the flu. But A-1 makes it as pleasant as it can be. I called several places and they had the best prices in the area and the most friendly staff as well. The facility seems secure and it has climate control so that positive. I got a storage because unfortunately my new place will not be ready for a couple months. I made a reservation online and got a call not to long after to confirm the reservation. I had to cancel my first reservation (same day) because I wasn't sure what day I was going to start moving and they were really nice about it and let me know to make another one once I was ready. I made another reservation and went in to start the process. Valentin was AMAZING. He's so nice and professional answered all the questions I had , honestly felt like I was talking to a friend. When we found out that there would be a gap of time between moving our child out of the college dorms and moving her into an apartment, we considered our options. Hiring a moving truck to move her home and then back was quickly discarded due to the cost of truck rental and gas, as well as doing it ourselves. From the moment we called to make a reservation to the day we moved in, A1 staff member "Alma" has provided us with everything we needed for a successful move. I love my storage space! The load in area near the elevator is spacious enough that two trucks can unload without getting in each others way. It's covered so items are protected from the elements. The units are well lit, clean and spacious. I priced a few units in the area and this was the best deal by far! The check in process was easy and quick. I'm so relieved to have my belongings stored safely away. After my garage was broken into I was warned that the thieves would be back. I didn't take any chances and put anything I didn't want to lose into A1! read more

No one ever likes having to get a storage unit because of the moving that goes along with it. A1 makes sure that the process to get one is easy and stress free. Locked premises with gate entry ensures that my stuff wont be tampered with. Great employess with a great attitude about there job. i forgot to take my lock off after I cleared everything out and wasnt too sure about the whole checkout process anyway. I was gone for a few weeks, and had incurred some fines through A1 because of the lock. The employee that I called after explaining my situation was more than happy to work with me and waved to the fees and saved me over 100 bucks. I would highly recommend going through A1!!! read more
