A-1 responded immediately, offered same day service, followed up with an email confirming my appointment time, and showed up on time. The technician was experienced and efficient. After the service was complete, A-1 followed up with an email which contained a link for payment, as well as a statement of all the particulars of the service provided, including pictures. These guys are professional, and honest. We had a crushed line due to tree roots, and they replaced the crushed pipe, removed the root, and fortified the pipe so that problem won't come back ( at least at that pipe- the tree is still alive). If you need work on your septic system, you may not be happy about the cost, but rest assured the job is done right. read more

Yikes, I had a sticky situation with our sewage extractor pump and asked my plumber who he'd recommend for tank services. He suggested A-1. I called immediately, spoke to Julian, and he promised to help me out. The truck showed up fast, took care of the job quickly and cleaned up afterwards. Their service guy, Voung, was exceptionally knowledgeable, quick, competent and polite. The results of A-1 Tank Services was critical to avoid an embarrassing disaster with our neighbors. I've put A-1's office number on my speed-dial list if this problem ever arises again. I wouldn't consider any other firm and highly recommend them. Our septic tank backed up over the weekend during all the rain storms. We called A-1 and Sarah was wonderful, helping us figure out the best plan of action. Early Monday morning, the crew showed up in the pouring rain (and thunder!) and cleared out the blocked pipe and drained the tanks, bringing the system back to normal. The whole time, they were smiling, keeping us informed and acting like it was no big deal working in a downpour! They did an excellent job and we can't recommend them enough! Caution- check the prices of other services before going with this company. This was our first time having a septic tank pumped and admittedly we were naive. It happened on a Sunday so we expected a higher rate. For 1 1/4 hours of service we paid $2430!! We didn't realize at the time that we had been ripped off until just this week when the exact same problem happened again, just four months after the pumping. We called around other companies and I consulted with my neighborhood friends who all have septic tanks, and that's when I realized that they had charged us at least 3x the average rate for emergency pumping. We also didn't know at the time that it is required by law in Santa Cruz county to receive an inspection report after a pumping. They didn't give us one at the time and only today did I receive one after I requested it. Not sure how they managed to pump 1800 gallons out of a 1500 gallon tank. They also failed to tell us when they pumped that we had a filter in the septic tank that needed cleaning every four months or so. This was the problem with the recent issues we had,, which could have been avoided had they given us that information in the first place and performed a proper inspection. Please do your research and call around to find out the going rate of other companies so that you are not ripped off like we were. read more

We called A-1 with an immediate unknown problem with our septic system. They were able to rearrange the schedule of one of their technicians and he came out that day. He was able to diagnose the problem, find our hidden septic tank and pump it out that day. He also pointed out a situation with the tank that would have quickly become a problem had we not decided to fix it. They were prompt, courteous and professional. I will use them again. read more

I originally came here for my business grease trap and had a great experience getting it cleaned out and sorted. However 6month rolled by there suppose to come here again to get this grease tank cleaned again. The service is no longer there. We schedule for 9am, my business doesn't open till 11am I had to sit in traffic during rush hour for over an hour to get there 3hrs before I normally would with no traffic to make this appointment. I didn't mind I needed anyways, 850am get a call sorry we won't make it to the 9-11am schedule can we come later, fine. 2pm nothing 4pm I had to call them and they said oh we will send out a truck right away.. 5pm I get a call that we need to reschedule. I spend the entire day waiting for you guys when I didn't need to, now I have to do this all over again. You guys are lucky your not a cable company making customer wait the entire day and not come.. At least other company will try to make up for their mistake by complementing something 50bucks be okay so at least my gas will be paid for. But nope all they can say sorry we have to come tomorrow because their truck is broken and hang up. I might have to bring this up to the BBB. read more

My family has been using this company for many years. We're the bocci's and I put this so they know who exactly this is. My grandma is 88 years old and this company took advantage of her basically looking to get as much money out of this job as possible. When explaining the issue they didn't ask the proper questions and just told us we needed a brand new septic tank. Sure that's the easy route right? Just tell customers they need everything brand new. Rightttt. Once they over quoted us we called for 3 more bids from other companies. Smart move on us! We ended up calling WH Dempsey. WH took the right approach. He said the issue was most likely caused from a leaky toilet and guess what problem was fixed! If you use this company do it on your own risk - get 3 bid always to make sure your not getting cheated! Amen! read more

Do not ever hire them, I hired them to do a flow test and they said I needed to replace my entire system. But then I got a second opinion and my flow test passed. They've been known to lie in order to get more business, Aaron's septic services is a better suggestion. read more

Got my residential septic tank pumped today. They came in a little before time slot given to me earlier. The driver was very caring and polite. He didn't want to harm my overhanging tree branches with his truck. After the job they hosed down any trickles. The driver got a few scratches from the surrounding rose bushes but he refused any band aid help. I am impressed. A big thank you. read more

This review is late in coming. A-1 Septic was wonderful. We had three visits due to our septic tank and the underground connection to the leach field not working. James Shane, the construction manager (co-owner of the business) was the key person who discovered that the line from the house to the leach field was damaged in multiple areas. He was fantastic as a leader, very knowledgeable, and an unbelievable hard worker. He and his crew dug out the septic tank outlet (thank you Carmalito especially as well as Patrick and Andre), cut through the driveway partially with a saw and then jack-hammered out the rest, laid over 100 feet of new outlet pipe and connected it to the leach field working tirelessly the entire day. James, one of the owners, came out to the job site before the actual pumping to make sure that we scheduled the correct kind of equipment so that I wouldn't be overcharged. He's extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. Ritu, who helped schedule all these appointments was very proactive about helping me understand all the different components of their pricing (which I thought was extremely reasonable given how difficult it is to find septic contractors in my area). I should have listened to the reviews. I don't know how this place stays in business. As a first time customer, the "tank policy" was not disclosed nor did I receive anything in writing stating it. I guess I'm supposed to magically know their pricing would be drastically different that what was quoted over the phone. Beware. The driver will come out with a 1/2 full tank and then let you know he has return to finish and it will cost you another tank service. The $650 tank service quoted will actually cost about $1200. Surprise. And forget about calling customer service, who was clearly annoyed that I would waste her valuable time. I waited on hold for about 15 min to be told to go pound sand. Her tone let me know that she certainly does have time for such stupid questions. Just completely unnecessary. I will say the driver was very pleasant and did not seem to represent what is obviously a sham business. read more

We have used A 1 on three separate occasions. (Shame on me). They installed a new tank for us which settled unevenly on the hillside. Could happen to anyone I guess. While we were on sabatical they called saying we need to have the tank pumped. They submitted a bill claiming to have pumped out our tank and charged us for "digging out" the tank access, which we had left uncovered. They later claimed they only had to dig up one access port but there was no indication at all in the yard when we returned of any digging. This January we had them pump out the tank yet again (with me on site) and requested a visual inspection of the condition of the tank. I was just informed by their staff that there would be an additional $175 charge for that information. Look elsewhere. read more

Our 30 year old septic tank needed replacement (fiberglass model with busted baffle). The tank site was in a difficult spot - little room to fit the smallest excavator. I received three bids; one was too expensive and the other (Acorn) was unprofessional (to say the least). James, the Construction Manager at A1, was professional, knowledgeable, friendly and honest throughout the process. The job was done quicker than expected and within the original bid price. This company will rip you off! Here is what I filed with BBB: On 7/9/2012 I noticed sewage runoff in my back yard. I called A1 septic to come and analyze the problem. I said I thought it was a leach field problem, and I needed help locating the valves. A driver was scheduled to come out and determine what remedy was needed. Over the phone I was quoted standard prices for pumping the septic tank, even though there was no indication the tank was the problem. No other prices or conditions were quoted on the phone. An A1 driver showed up, and upon a very short investigation, he determined that no pumping was called for, but rather, there was a blockage in the main line to the tank. I told him to proceed with snaking the line as he suggested, but turns out he came out without the necessary equipment, and needed to call the office to schedule someone else to come out for that. (so much for full service). I took the opportunity to get a quote for this and was told $125 an hour, minimum 4 hours. This comes out to $500 for snaking 10 feet of line. I smelled a rip-off and declined the job. But wait! this is not all! 30 minutes later I get a call from the office telling me they are going to charge me $250 since the driver came out and did nothing. They even left an invoice in my mailbox (with no postage - a federal offense)- addressed not to me, but to the previous home owner. I followed up with a call to A1, and asked to talk to the owner of the business, Jack Shain and explained the situation. He was very belligerent and insisted I need to pay. When I asked him to submit a signed work order showing I agreed to a cancellation fee so I can process the payment, he admitted there was none, nor did he have any transcript of a "verbal contract" he was trying to hide behind; in fact, he didn't even have my name. I consider the $250 cancellation fee totally bogus and am accusing A1-septic of fraudulent billing practices. read more

He went about servicing our tank which was not an easy task and, I'm sure, took longer than expected. Extremely bad experience. Had this company come out to inspect a septic tank on a property we are our purchasing. The guy that was doing the inspection broke the concrete lid to the tank, dropped a third of it into the tank and put a rock over the hole and left. It was obviously still intact when he went to put the lid back on, otherwise why would the broken piece even be out in a place where it could fall in (seems he basically dropped the lid on the tank causing it to break). I contacted the company and they refused to accept responsibility for breaking the lid (even after the tech admitted breaking it to the existing owner) and said it was old and it happens, the owner even said he's "broke hundreds of lids". The lid was just off 3 days before this inspection and no damage was visible. They told me they couldn't send us the report until we authorize the card on file to be charged, I was going to just have a different company come out and re do the inspection because I didn't trust a word they said by this point and didn't want to pay them anything. They went ahead and charged the card without any authorization from us. The inspection report that we received for $853.88 was extremely vague and had no pictures to accompany it or much info at all. I asked for a price on repairs and they said they would need to send someone out again and it would be another 175/hr with a $700 minimum, crooks. Very rude people with 0 customer service and no morals when operating their business. Now we have to spend more money to have a reputable company come out and do another inspection. Wow. read more

We hired this company to empty the septic system tank. The employees proceeded to miss the cover of the tank and put a big-fat hole in a copper water pipe. In order to stem the flow of water we had the water company turn off the water to the house at the curb-side. The owner of A-1 would not acknowledge the damage his employees caused, would not have a qualified plumber fix the pipe with the hole, and literally left us high and dry without water. Avoid this company at all costs! The owner has serious problems acknowledging responsibility for his employees mistakes, which are in fact his mistakes.
