Going through the drive-thru I ordered a chopped beef baked potato for my wife and a sliced turkey sandwich for me. I asked for the BBQ sauce on the side. Once I got home there was NO sauce! Stopped by later in the evening - I think I was the only one there to eat. Staff was friendly, but the BBQ was just OK. Serving size was good. I had the sausage and brisket plate with slaw and fried okra. I can't really complain, but it wasn't memorable. Maybe it was the time of day that I was tehre, but it just didn't give me the fully satisfied feeling when I was done. Service is barely okay but the food is god awful. Do not recommend not in the slightest. If you're hungry enough though, eat here and you'll be just fine. The Hinze family & all establishments are well known, respected, & usually desired. Been frequenting all locations for 20+ years. Today was not pleasant & hopefully mgmt will take notice & correct the employee problem. Our guy taking the order was very helpful, but didn't have an answer for what type of pork. He went to the young gal cutting meat to get the answer & this is where it went downhill & we were shocked. ... All I hear is I already told you & I'm not going to repeat myself. The male worker tried to get the answer, but this young Latina took a loud attitude with her co-worker. Not his fault, that he couldn't assist us. We didn't need to see or hear all of this. I've managed restaurants for many years in past & this behavior by any employee is a no no if you want a job. Was really looking fwd to having some excellent BBQ, but we exited the establishment to eat where we may be appreciated & employees are not being childish. The food is always spectacular & have never seen any Hinze establishment like this. Hope the one gal employee is dealt with, so the Hinze name is not tarnished. read more

An ode to my hometown. If you happen to be passing through the small town of Bay City, TX, this is the only stop you need lol. Seriously. I crave this all the time and cherish my yearly A & A stop. Come for the fully loaded baked potatoes, leave in carb coma heaven. I've NEVER had a baked potato this amazing before. Yes, the other bbq is pretty decent, but trust me and get the baked potato. It's massive in size and covered in butter, sour cream, delicious cheese, green onions, and topped with your choice of meat.. although the only right answer is chopped beef. Other notes: 1) if you are trying to really live your best carb life -- add a side of mac and cheese and the cobbler. 2) If you have a large party there's plenty of room in the restaurant to accommodate you. 3) You can buy gallons of BBQ sauce to go, a win for us Bay City has-beens. read more

I've given this place multiple chances. I come from an area with very high quality bbq. Lulling, Lockhart....this place is the McDonalds of bbq. Dry, rubbery, and almost no flavor. Pork ribs smoky but pretty tough for some reason Barbecue sauce not overly sweet actually very good flavor. . Pretty good size dining room to customer ratio as well as parking. Decent prices but you do not get top quality food at quality prices. Brisket not so tender as well but not tough like beef jerky. You do not have access to the barbecue sauce when you leave the counter you have to beg for it at the cashier and you get it in a 2 ounce to cup. Smoky flavor on my finfers an hour after leaving the barbecue place, pretty good smokey essence, even as you walk in through the door. Came here based on a yelp review and so glad we did! Food was so good there was very little talking at our table once the food came. The place is very popular locally and when we asked a diner for a recommendation she said it was all so could she couldn't pick out one certain thing. Between us we tried just about everything on their menu and she was right! The chicken is soft and smoky. The ribs a perfect bite and ask for burnt ends and you'll be a VERY happy diner The stuffed potatoes with it without a meat choice are delicious and enough for two. We really liked the rice salad, black eye peas, slaw and bacon and onion potatoes. Just like we were told you can't go wrong! Dessert is the only weak link. You won't have room anyway. read more

I don't think folks will really understand. It just doesn't make any sense when you really sit down and think about it. But I will admit that there is a lot of emotion in this rating and review. Bay City isn't home for me, but it always felt like it as that's where we went at holidays because the grandparents were there. There's not much to the town. It's not really close enough to the gulf to really be allowed the word "Bay" in its name. Furthermore, this establishment now resides in what used to be a Long John Silvers I believe. Prior to moving there it was in a very industrial steel building. But I suppose all of this talk about a not-so-fancy building in a not-so-fancy town simply illustrates the prerequisites of good BBQ. If it's too fancy, it's just not right. As such, A&A was first in my life. I think it was part of my life before I even knew what BBQ was. It must be the heredity. As such it is the flavor profile upon which I always compare BBQ and there are very few places that approach this expectation. This is why, while living in Yankee territories now, it is hard for me to comment on my friends' favorite places. It's not that I can't explain my position on the mediocrity of their favorite places, but that like politics and religion, the topic runs deep in everyone's hearts. To get to the food (finally!) the beef brisket is sublime. It's always perfectly smoked, appropriately seasoned, sufficiently juicy and just really damn good. You can take all of those words I just used and apply them with equal ease to the chicken and sliced pork. And I know that BBQ sauce can be an evil word, but their's is spectacular. They started to bottle it, but getting it warm straight from the counter is so much better (I think because it's had a chance to reduce and intensify a little). But my favorite item is their sausage. I've never had the guts to ask them how they prepare it or where they get it from, but I've never been able to find its equal. I always buy at least an entire ring and I could easily chow through it by myself in one setting. The spices in that sausage are just right. I've never ventured much into the sides but the rest of my family insists that the beans are really good. So if you ever look at a map and see Bay City a ways down south of Houston give a trip a thought. Just for kicks, tell yourself what you really want to do is to head to Matagorda Bay and then just keep that thought going... you'll need some lunch right? This place is so good! I only saw one table of people in the whole place but it was around 2:30 on a Sunday. The drive through was jammin' though- wrapped all the way around and moving quick! We pulled in because of the line outside. We just moved here yesterday and don't know where anything is. We had 2 hours to kill before dinner with a friend and we were already hungry. We decided to split the Deluxe Plate with ribs, chopped beef and sausage and for our sides, we ordered rice salad, potato salad and green beans with an added side of potatoes, onions & bacon. First of all- HOLY GREEN BEANS! Whatever they do to them, they are amazing. Taste like they were just picked from a garden and cooked perfectly. (I used to have to pick and snap beans for hours as a kid.) The rub on the ribs is delicious, the sausage was tasty and cooked perfectly and the chopped beef was good and fresh. I watched her chop it. I was a little worried when I walked in and saw the hot line that some things may be a little dried out but that wasn't the case. It comes with a really good sauce on the side but honestly none of it needed extra flavor! The potato and rice salads were good but we will prolly try something else next time. The potatoes bacon & onion was mashed (which I didn't expect) and super good! I saw that someone said the staff isn't overly friendly. I felt like they were helpful when I asked about gluten and they were nice when we picked up our food but I don't really need people to be over the top enthusiastic. A&A has been around for quite a few years and has always been the best choice for BBQ around Bay City. They have pretty good brisket along with delicious sausage and tender ribs. Even if you don't want an all out beef plate they have other options for you like stuffed baked potatoes that are a pretty generous portion bbq chicken and fried fish at the end of the week. The other good thing they serve is a large variety of sides. You normally get 2-3 option depending on the plate you buy and my go-to's are the pinto beans and potato salad. They are always so perfectly prepared. And hands down the best sweet tea and bbq sauce around. read more
