Usually LOVE Fat Grass. Bright shiny spot in the mostly dim culinary town of Bay City, TX. My wife and I decided to meet my parents here for their 64th Anniversary/Mother's Day celebration. Drove almost two hours from Houston for their Saturday brunch only to find the doors locked! Big time bummer! Maybe some tragic event? Hopefully not calling it quits! Bay City NEEDS Fat Grass! Went to Waterfront in Matagorda for lunch instead. Really nice, but not Fat Grass. Upon returning to retrieve our SUV from in front of Fat Grass, we notice that, lo and behold, they are opening for evening service. Felt like walking over and asking why their website fibbed to us, but foot hurting from recent surgery, so just traveled on to my parents house for drinks and the Kentucky Derby.... Therefore, not really a review; just a comment on the lackadaisical attitude of management I've come to expect from lesser establishments these days regarding treatment of "valued" customers... Everyone, it's okay to season your meats. I PROMISE YOU a robust flavor of herbs and spices attract a lot more diverse customers than by playing it safe and under-seasoning. (Don't over do salt ofc, but the other seasoning - GO FOR IT) It's just that the Ribeye came out a little bland. The sear had barely any crust/crunch to it. My husband was frowning during the entire experience. Secondly, the Panko-crusted Artichoke Chicken needed more herb to its batter and a flavorful marinade (at least) before frying. Beyond that, the portion size didn't fill us up, and we left still hungry. And we're a small framed couple, so I would love to leave with a box of leftovers at our size than to leave with an empty stomach. This place has a lot of potential, but I think it needs to understand that fine-dining does not mean to lack flavor. read more

Atmosphere was great and the food was good. I went with a group of coworkers on a Thursday night and a DJ was outdoors playing some good music. I got the open face burger and fried calamari. The burger was good but the bun did get soggy quick from the queso. The fried calamari came with a Tabasco butter but was very mild. My coworker got the jalapeños and a Cajun pasta. He said it was great and was worth getting again. The service was great. Our server was super friendly and gave amazing recommendations. Pina coladas were amazing. read more

i traveled to bay city from rosenberg to see some family i hadn't seen in a long time and this is where i met up with them. the outside and the inside of the restaurant was super cute. the service was really nice and quick. i tried a peach mule and hated it (because of the peach flavoring but everyone else at the table liked it) and the waitress replaced it for me very quickly with no trouble. great service from her, i wish i remembered her name! the appetizers were great and everyone's food at the table was delicious..... except. i ordered the cajun seafood pasta. i took my first bite and it was delicious. i took my second bite and i realized that the amount of sodium i was tasting was going to make me sick. it literally made my heart rate spike! When we come to Bay City to visit my daughter, we always have to go to Fat Grass! You can sit outside or inside for casual or in the dining room for a little more reserved atmosphere. The old bar is amazing! Absolutely must try the Wedding Cake Martini, my favorite! Today we ordered the Artichoke chicken which comes with pasta - oh my! We were greeted warmly and we asked to sit in a booth to contain the grands. Our server was the best! Great manners and very attentive! Love this place! read more

Stopped by on our road trip because we needed lunch. My friend has been saying he wanted redfish so when he saw it on the menu it was a given. When the redfish came out it took up all of the large plate along with a side of rice and vegetables. He said it was the best redfish he ever had. That it was fresh and well prepared. We had redfish for dinner that night as well, at a different restaurant, and it cemented his experience at Fat Grass. read more

This spot is one of the nicer places in this little town. They have a full bar, Dining inside or out on the patio. We have been here for Valentine's day twice. I Love it! We have gone with friends and just the 2 of us. It is a great hang out spot too! The service is slow and the hostess was not pleasant but the waitress was super polite and very apologetic for the wait. The bar drinks are always on point here!! The Lobster Crab cakes are my Fav!! Not bad. I had the mahi thermidor, and the sauce was outstanding, but the fish was over cooked. Veggies on the side were pretty good grilled, and better dipped in the sauce. I'll start by saying the hostess a d our waitress Zan were great. However, there were several things on the menu that were not available, some beer brands were not available, and most importantly, the rib eye steak that they claim is 16 ounces and they charge $42 for was very disappointing. I have never had a ribeye that was less than a quarter inch thick. I was expecting a true Texas ribeye and got a horrible product. If you want bread you have to ask for it and pay extra. I asked for an espresso but they don't have it, however they offer an espresso martini. Kind of confusing. Not what I expected from the reviews. I would and will not ever go back. This a cool spot downtown and the place you want to be if you are looking for an upscale dining experience in a small-town. The whole staff is very attentive and well informed with the menu. If you are looking for a cocktail or cold beer, you will find it all at the beautiful bar. Outside dining has a water feature that really adds to the ambiance. Below are the menu items we enjoyed... Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos Fat Grass Ribeye Grilled 12 oz. prime hand cut ribeye, steak fries, sautéed spinach, red wine mushroom sauce. Chicken Fried Deer Steak Farm fresh raised venison steaks tenderized and lightly breaded, red potato mashers, green beans, homemade white gravy. Blackberry Cobbler Southern Style, Vanilla Ice Cream, Raspberry glaze. Everything was quite tasty, but my favorite menu item was the Chicken Fried Deer Steak. The Venison was extremely fresh and seasoned to perfection. The breading was light, and the cream gravy was thick... just like I like it! The red potatoes and green beans were fantastic. You know I am a dessert lover and this one did not disappoint. What really stood out about the Blackberry Cobbler we enjoyed was the fact it was not too sweet. I am on a very restricted diet due to chemotherapy. The Fat Grass is one of my favorite places to eat in Matagorda County so I brought in a filet of wild caught Flounder, in the hopes that they would prepare it for me. Turns out, they do something called "Customers Catch" where you can bring in your own fresh-caught fish and they will cook it up with sides and salad for $15!! The manager was SO accommodating about my food restrictions and went out of his way to come speak to us and prepare everything exactly the way I needed. My husband ordered the meatloaf and both of our meals were delicious. I can't say enough good things about this place, the food and the staff. My family from this area said the Fat Grass was the best place in Bay City to hang out and get food and drinks, so that we did on a Saturday evening. I ordered the Ahi tuna tartar and it was delicious! This is definitely a small plate/appetizer. I also ordered the Cobb salad. My salad was large and filled me up. I also had a variety of cocktails and shots with the family as we enjoyed Saturday night karaoke. Karaoke ended up being a blast! There some regulars you could tell that probably come every weekend and were fun to watch. Then there were some others too including us that weren't as great. It was quite the variety and so much fun. The karaoke host was great at getting people to participate too. All in all if you happen to find yourself in Bay City and you are looking for a good time I think this is the spot! read more

We stopped here after visiting the area for a wedding. We used to frequent another popular old steak house but the quality has gone way down so we figured we would give this place a try. Glad we did. The vibe is nice. A fairly trendy spot with a good outdoor area. It's also not soooo trendy that laid back and "older" folks wouldn't feel welcomed. There was a great mix of all ages of folks. The drink menu is on the wall. For some reason I was annoyed by this. My back was to the menu so I had to turn around to see what was available. The drinks were good. Not too sweet and you could tell you were drinking an adult beverage. No sugary adult juice. We had the stuffed jalapeños. They were pretty good. Maybe a little small portion wise but with inflation what can you expect. The chicken fried deer steak was so delicious. The wait was fairly long due to the kitchen being backed up and it was hard to find our server. But other staff did check in with us and apologized for the wait. A hidden gem in the Bay City area! First time in the city and we were limited to selection of eateries since it was late but they open till 3:00 in the morning. This place did not disappoint. The service captured our attention but the food was the main attraction! There was 7 in our party and everyone got to experience something different. The steak was cooked in a manner that just melted with every bite. The eggplant Parmesan was amazing and the deer chicken fried steak was sooo good. The red fish was fresh and flavorful. Went to Fat Grass for an early dinner today. I would rate the food but we were never served, in fact after about 5 minutes, no one came to our table to take our drink order or give us a menu. Empty restaurant with at least four wait staff at the bar and we were totally ignored. So we walked out and went to K-2 Steak House where we were greeted by the hostess and had a delicious steak dinner. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON SUCH RUDE WAIT STAFF. read more

I ordered the meatloaf sandwich w sweet pototor fries. Hubby ordered the Ruben. My fries were not even lukewarm and one side of my bread was soggy. Hubby Ruben bread was burnt but his fries were hot. He said his Ruben was just average and nothing to rave about. I sent my fries back and they were hot. Service was good but honestly the kitchen needs help. So a little disappointed in one of my favorite restaurants in Bay City. Don't think I will be returning. My husband surprised me with a reservation for dinner here for Valentine's Day. They gave us a choice of ordering off the menu or having their 5 course Valentine menu which included champagne. We chose their Valentine menu. The first course was Risotto Arancini, pancetta with lemon sauce(.3): they were quite big and so delicious especially with the lemon sauce. The second course was a Spinach Salad(Texas chèvre, candied pecans, fresh strawberries, with warm bacon vinaigrette) I am a salad person, I LOVED it, as did my husband! The third course was a Creamy Squash Bisque(sweet harissa oil, crème fraiche. I am NOT a huge soup fan BUT it was so creamy and soothing! My hubby is a huge soup fan and he couldn't stop saying how delicious it was! The fourth and main course was Marinated Beef Tenderloin, roasted potatoes, shrimp over sautéed asparagus. The tenderloin was so tender, grilled to perfection, the potatoes were amazing as was the sautéed asparagus with shrimp over it with a very creamy delicious sauce. The 5th course was the cheesecake. My Valentine date was really nice. The manager had the hostesses great us with complimentary champagne. I consider myself a foodie, and it was really great from our ahi tuna appetizer to my Chilean sea bass and crème brûlée. The best part of our evening was having Cici as our server. My boyfriend was in the restaurant business for 30 years, and was also impressed by her. He had the artichoke chicken and loved it. If you live in our neck of the woods, fine dining is difficult to find. On my opinion, they are doing it right. Cudos to a great manager. read more
