Since it's a 26-year-old imported Nissan Silvia, I was expecting a headache trying to figure it out and find parts. Nope! This place is as good as it gets. A family-run business that provides excellent, timely, and honest service at a fair price. The place may not look like much when you pull up, but Steve and his team are friendly, professional, and do a great job. I have never felt taken advantage of, which is important to me as someone who doesn't know much about cars. Steve has even told me before when I really don't need to spend the money to fix something on my old 2001 car - or conversely when something is a safety issue and it needs to be taken care of. I trust their judgement and appreciate their customer service. I don't live nearby their shop anymore, but I go out of my way to go to A & I's when I need an oil change or need work done. I have been taking my car there for over 5 years and I have always left with a smile on my face - how many people can say that when leaving their mechanic?! They always get the work done right and charge very very fair prices. For instance, I went to the dealer to get an estimate on having my emergency break fixed and they estimated $650 for the repair. These guys did the front brakes (pads and rotors) on my 2011 Toyota Camry earlier this month. I waited to review them until I was sure that I was happy with the service, but I can say now that I definitely am. When I drove off the lot after picking up my car, I realized it was the first time ever that I had left an auto mechanic feeling good. These guys don't try to upsell you, and don't try to BS you into thinking anything except what's really going on. Their prices are fair, they work quickly, and their time estimates are on point. I paid half of what I would have paid at the Toyota dealer for the same maintenance, and just over half of what I would have paid at some other larger places in the area. I'll be back here next time I need something done, for sure. The only thing I wish were better (and this is tiny, and not surprising), is that they won't volunteer all the information I wish they would from the get go - I always kinda feel like I have to ask what is X about everything I'm not sure of at a mechanic - they don't just explain it as if I don't know from the start. I'm sure some people appreciate that, but I personally just wish everything were totally transparent. Luckily, I'm sure these guys would tell me anything I wanted to know beforehand. Took my 1996 Honda Accord in yesterday for a new radiator. I called them on Friday asking for an appointment, they told me they could fit me in on Monday and I thought that that was fair. Within an hour they called me back and told me to bring my car in the next day and they would fit me in. The shop is small, but they do a booming business and have a staff big enough to keep up with the demand. I picked up my car within five hours of dropping it off and was pleasantly surprised that the price was actually less than what they had originally quoted. They charged me $400 LESS than the quote the Honda dealer gave me. I would definitely recommend them, they have unbeatable prices and great service. Wouldn't suggest if you're a young woman. I scheduled an oil change and tire rotation. They told me on the phone it would be $35 for regular oil which I asked for and $20 for tire rotation. I was charged $80 once I got there after three hours. They said they ran out of regular oil and put in synthetic but charged me for regular oil, which I was confused about but just paid. I called later since that didn't make sense and they told me again $35 for a regular oil change was the price, and I asked him why they charged me $60 and put in synthetic oil when I asked for regular. They didn't have an answer, because the "ran out of regular oil" that the said earlier obviously wasn't true nor was the "we charged you regular price for synthetic". Their final answer was "you have a nicer car"... When I picked up my car (I have FWD), I asked where the rear left tire went (I have a slow leaking tire, and wanted to know where it was now), and he told me it went to front left and took a look at it. That is the incorrect tire rotation pattern for FWD. Later when I called he said he was mistaken in saying that, it went to the front right which is the correct pattern. After so many other lies how can I tell which one is right? I am also about to drive 3,000 miles to move across the country next week and now don't know which tire to check on before I leave. Maybe if I didn't have a "nicer" car or didn't seem like an ignorant young woman, than they probably would have not tried to double the oil change price and would have made sure to do the correct rotation pattern... I trusted them because of all the good reviews... learned my lesson there read more

I took my 2003 Hyundai Accent in because it was making some really loud squealing and sputtering noises. I thought I needed a new timing belt. They said I actually just had a leaky gasket and needed a few exterior belts changed. The total came to $300 and they had the car done the same afternoon. The next day the car seem to be misfiring and I thought maybe the new belts were slack so they told me to bring it back in. The belts looked fine but they replaced a couple of spark plugs on the spot and totally free of charge. We will definitely be back! read more

They are always able to get you in (within a few days) and give you a fair and trustworthy diagnosis of your vehicle. It's truly a novelty to find honest and dedicated mechanics in this day and age but if you've found them to assist with your cars needs then you have made the right choice. They stand by their work if something isn't right they will make it right. Neighborhood is a little sketchy so always lock your doors but that can be said for anywhere. They are willing to talk me through their diagnoses and go the extra mile to make sure all of my (thorough) questions are answered. Additionally, they will often take small- to medium-sized jobs on the same day you call and be done by the end of the day! It's refreshing to go to a shop with no frills and no sales pitches. A & I does what you need done at a price which should make their competitors feel ashamed. The parts they use are likely of lesser quality than you would get at say, a dealership or national chain. However, the 'risk' is worth the savings if you're on a tight budget and willing to accept a slightly shorter lifespan and/or higher failure rate on your new parts. That being said, I have never had to take my car back for any kind of premature failure. A & I rocks! read more

I love coming to this place because the pricing is EXTREMELY fair and I know that my car is well taken care of by the tech Steve. I am not an expert in the car fixing business, but years of dealing with different issues with my car have taught me how much parts usually cost. And boy, A&I doesn't even upcharge you much (or at all) for the parts that you need to fix. I am surprised by the price that they quote for me, and it's usually 40% to 60% cheaper than the dealer or other mechanic shops around the area, which says a LOT by itself. The great thing about A&I (or maybe Steve) is that he actually explains the issue to you if you are curious enough to ask, and gives you several options for you to choose if they are available. Steve would usually patiently tell you the pro/con for each option and let you decide what to do. He seems to me like a guy who just wants you to enjoy driving your car. Does money/the business matter to him (or his family? not sure if this is family-owned)? Probably. But I have been getting my car fixed/maintained there for over 3 years and the quote is so good that it's probably not even worth your time to DIY. Trust me, it's tough to find an honest mechanic nowadays, so if you are in Allston, you are lucky to have A&I around the corner! read more

How do I love thee, let me count the ways... this week, I count about 1800 of them -- as in the $1800 I saved by not using the dealership. And that's just this week! I drive a Mini that I love, but that is beset by chronic throttle body issues. It's just a known issue with that particular model and year. The first time I had trouble with it, Steve and his team replaced it for me with a used one for a very reasonable price -- and when it failed 29 days later, it was still under warranty, so they were quite accommodating about replacing it again. Everything was fine and workable for a year and a half, until the part appeared to be failing again. (Remember, this is a chronic, known issue with the car itself.) Steve was concerned that there might be something wrong besides the throttle body, so he said that while he could do diagnostics and would then credit the fee for the diagnostics toward whatever repairs would follow, he suggested I consider taking it to the dealership to have them do the diagnostics, just to be sure, because he doesn't do a lot of Minis. Based on the dealership's hypothesis about what might be wrong, he also suggested another competitor who might be better equipped to do the work they were suggesting (which it turned out I didn't need). I appreciated that he was willing to approach the issue that way. Long story short, my experience with the dealership means I will NOT be going to them again for anything EVER. It wasn't just the $2100+ estimate for repairs Steve and I both agreed were unnecessary... but I digress. I took the car straight back to A&I instead. Not only did Steve find the one part (throttle body) I did need faster than expected, he called me the instant it came in, and I was able to drop the car off immediately and had it back in time for work the next morning. Cost for the part and the installation? $350. Leaving another 5-star Yelp review seems inadequate thanks for the excellent work they do. They'll get your car handled in a timely fashion for the most reasonable price possible, and you'll never have customer service issues. As a woman, I'm tremendously grateful to find a shop that treats me with respect, rather than assuming I know nothing about the car I drive. Steve and his team are pretty much the nicest, most considerate and knowledgeable folks I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with regarding a car repair, and I know my car is always in good hands with them. The Toyota dealership had told me I needed new front pads and rotors and that it would cost, I forget exactly, but it was between $500-$600. I declined and, based on good previous Yelp reviews, picked A & I to go to. I did need the pads and rotors, but the price was $288, about half what I was quoted at the dealership. You aren't paying for a beautiful shop and waiting room here (and actually because of the coronavirus, there was no waiting room), but who cares when you save this much money!! On Wednesday, June 8, 2022 while driving my Acura MDX, I suddenly experienced a light on my dashboard that reads "Check charging system". My car stopped and I was stuck on the side of the road so I towed my car to A&I auto to be looked at. On arrival, the manager asked me to leave my car, it will be checked and he will be personally calling me to keep me posted. I didn't receive a call from him on Wednesday so on Thursday I called him and he stated that he was busy and he will call me later with updates. It was another lie, no call received on Thursday. On Friday at 1000 hours I went to see him, my car was parked on the same spot as I had left it on Wednesday that's when I knew I was dealing with a liar. The manager told me to take the car to the dealership to be looked at since he doesn't have time for me. Like I am going to listen to a dishonest mechanic. I towed my car three blocks away from his shop. Two hours later, I was informed of the problems and my car was fixed same day with a great price. The Manager at A & I auto cost me $500 in rental and Uber because the manager was in his feelings. That money could have gone to my kids for their needs. With the soaring inflation and the way we are all struggling this was highly disheartening and unprofessional. You're a good mechanic but you have no compassion and your behavior towards me was suspect. read more

I found myself in Boston last week, with my car feeling funny and the check engine light coming on. My car eventually dies (thankfully in a parking lot) and I'm forced to pick a shop out of my usual territory. Thanks to yelp, I decide on this place. This actually happened to me a week before (without the check engine light) and took it to a different auto shop and got 600 dollars worth of replacements done off of guesses from the make and model of my car (96 Honda accord) which clearly didn't work. I call ahead to make sure it was fine to drop my car off and get my car towed there. The guy was very fast and says he will call me later when he found out whats wrong with it. Later in the day he told me that the crank shaft sensor needs replacing as well as the timing belt. He quoted me 450. Later he calls me to tell me my water pump is slowly leaking and asked if I wanted to replace that. Now this is the part I really like: the fact that he asked permission before going ahead and replacing anything he wanted. He didn't lie and tell me it was urgent, he gave me the option of leaving it as is. I told him he might as well replace that and quoted me 100-150. After 2 days of work he calls me up to tell me my car is finished. The final bill was 550, which was on the lower end of the quote and a very fair price (after checking some prices online). My car is working perfectly fine again. They were fast, friendly, considerate, and cheap. Couldn't ask for more. I'd go back here in a heartbeat in the future. read more

I went to Steve on two separate occasions, once to fix a brake line on my 1999 Honda Accord and once for an oxygen sensor replacement in my 2002 Lexus IS300. I called a bunch of auto shops in the area for an estimate on the O2 sensor; most wanted $250-300 for the job. Steve and his team were able to do the work for less, and the work was completed in under an hour. I will definitely come here again.
