Today I went to Valvoline and was told there was an issue with the locking mechanism on my engine hood. They recommended I go down the street to Long Life Auto Repair in Waltham, and it turned into an incredible experience. The facility was actually closed, but one of the managers still took the time to help me unlock the hood of my car and educate me on why it was malfunctioning. That level of kindness and professionalism is rare these days. I can't say enough good things about this place. After two other mechanics failed to correctly identify an intermittent rattling sound in my engine, Mike and his crew deduced that it was merely a bit low on oil. My primary mechanic had wanted to change the timing chain -- not belt, chain -- for $2k dollars. He was "100% sure" from the particular sound that that was the problem. Another mechanic was uncertain what the sound was; he said to just keep driving until things got worse. After the oil change the sound was gone and I have a new mechanic after politely dismissing the one I had used for over five years. read more

I've been getting my family's cars repaired here for 12 years. Mike is wonderful, kind and honest. He's given terrific advice when I've purchased new and used cars. The first time I went to his shop, I asked him to replace one of the sway bars on my car since money was tight at the time and I wanted to do the second one a few months later. The technician replaced both of them in error - Mike only charged me for one. (This is the complete opposite of my experience dealing with the Subaru dealership in Belmont.). I took my car in because it was overheating. The reviews were very positive so I figured I'd try them out. They were very busy but offered to look at my car as soon as possible. It took some time, but eventually they were able to do so. Mike was very understanding of my situation and was very responsive to my calls for updates. When Mike finally saw my car, he called me in and showed me the severity of the issues that had to be dealt with and, unfortunately, informed me that it would be best that I went to the dealership as they may have better results in finding the problem. So why a 5 star review, you may ask. Well, I've had mechanics who promised the world only to deliver duds. I appreciated Mike's honesty and sincerity which makes sense why so many people go to see him. Also, this was a very stressful situation for me, yet Mike and his staff were all kind (shout-out to Lauren!) and patient. A great mechanic out of the hundred's of repair shops out there, A little relevant background that will be relevant for this review... I am a student, and I commute daily from Salem to Waltham (little over 28 miles) I already have a problem with my EGR valve, but that repair is in progress (waiting for a part to come into my Salem mechanic) EGR problems should be fixed, however, they are not a problem to drive with... So, here I am driving to school on the highway, and my engine starts misfiring (should not be driven on, especially if the check engine light flashes, and even more so if you have to drive on the highway. Anyways, because of the EGR problem, I started calling to find out if I could have it scanned (depending on the code, I would know if the misfire and check engine light were related). I wasn't planning any repair work, I just wanted to know what I was dealing with One Waltham shop said they would charge $20 to read the light. Then I called this place, they said they won't charge anything, so to them I went. They scanned it, and turns out my problem is not related to the EGR valve, but caused by something else... pending diagnosis When the guy scanning realized I not only have a severe misfire (flashing check engine light) but have to drive on the highway, he called the main mechanic here (don't remember the name) Who got under the hood, and said it is likely the spark plug wires due to the chalky coating on them (indicates arching) He very calmly, nicely, and patiently explained the problem to me. The repair would cost no more than two-three hundred something. Even more amazing was that their calendar was full, and it was the end of the day (I brought it in around 4:45, and they close at 6) yet they were still able to squeeze me in, and fix the problem. I love how I was treated as a customer, and how everyone was so nice in explaining the problem to me in a clear, simple, non-condescending way. I also love how they were able to squeeze me in despite them having a full calendar, and more cars being towed in. And I love that they have loaner vehicles for only $10/day plus any gas used (posted) And, I asked: if I were to take the loaner [late] one afternoon, and return it the next morning, they would only charge the $10. ***Keep in mind, however, this loaner should probably be reserved (call ahead) and only used if your car is actually in their shop, and not as a rental car service*** read more

The best auto repair in town! Why? Honest + fair charge. I was there 2 weeks ago asking for tires and breaks change, after 2 minutes inspect, they told me the tire is still good for at least 4 months' use and they need more time to inspect the breaks once the car is in the shop. Mike(I believe he is the owner) is the one I talked to. Super nice gentleman who can explain everything in the way everybody understands. This is the first time I've ever done a Yelp review, I was beyond impressed by the customer service I received, they went above and beyond to keep me in the loop, the work was done quickly and they were very fair with the prices. I have a 2013 Jeep Compass, never really had any issues in the past, I was driving home from work and my breaks started making an awful noise. I work in Waltham so I checked out Yelp to see some places in the area and Long Life Auto seemed to have great reviews. I called Mike the next day, he said I could come in that day, I dropped my car off... I was about to order an uber back to work and Mike offered one of the guys to give me a ride back. Mike called me while I was at work to let me know the damages, which were different than he originally thought. I know nothing about cars, he gave me a very thorough rundown to let me know what I needed. He said my back breaks were almost shot but I still had a few months (he was very honest/fair). By far the best experience I've had at a mechanic. Had a 400+ mile trip coming up when I heard a loud clanging coming from the rear of my car. Brought it in first thing in the morning (I actually got there a little before they opened). Expected to be told, 'leave the keys, we'll call you later' (and then going home to rearrange plans) and definitely wasn't expecting any work done that day. Instead, Mike didn't seem to mind I was there before he opened. Took it right out, with me, around the block to hear the problem. Brought it back, took a look at it, allowed me to help as this was before any of his employees were due in, and diagnosed the problem right away. Mike's explanations were clear - he not only explained the issue but showed me, too. Luckily, it was a quick fix and he got right to it and also took care of a minor leak he noticed, too (showed me this first as well). Whole thing took less than an hour and a half and the car sounds and is running great. Price was more than fair given he fixed everything right away with no notice. Can't say enough good things. Mike is excellent! I called to get a quote for two rear wheel bearing replacements and an alignment for my Lexus RX350 after my dealership told me I needed to get these done. The quote he gave me was fair and similar to other shops I called but Mike went a step further. Whereas other places quoted based on what I told them I needed fixed, Mike explained to me that it's usually one side that's the issue and not both at once. Additionally, he told me an alignment was not necessary for that type of repair- my dealership was trying to make me pay for things that wasn't even needed! He said to bring my car in so we could test it out on the road together. I brought it in and Mike drove my car to confirm that it was indeed a rear wheel bearing problem that was causing the sounds I heard at high speeds. Then back at the shop, when the car was on the lift, he had me listen with a stereoscope both sides and made me see the noise was only coming from one side. Anyway, it's been two days since Mike repaired rear wheel bearing for my car and so far my car seems like it's back to normal. I was looking for a good repair shop to become my go-to place for future issues, and Mike has won me over! read more

I've been going to Long Life Auto and working with Mike for almost 5 years since moving to Boston. I was recommended to give them a try by a local Valvoline Oil Change Branch Manager. When I went there they were able to beat any price from other shops I got without any haggling. They give you the best price they can when you walk in the door. They've saved me money countless times over these 5 years with items such as wheel replacements, A/C service, belt replacements, etc. Mike and his guys really know what they're doing out there and the front of shop staff are the friendliest in the business! Mike, Andy, Herbie, and the other guys at Long Life have taken care of me on numerous occasions. I purchased a used 2000 Jeep Cherokee a little under a year ago and was definitely prepared to have to put in some work. Just a little background information, while I was making the purchase I had a "pre-purchase inspection" done at the local Shell station in Needham to make sure I was not buying a lemon. I was given i diagnosis of a few things, none which were dealbreakers (brakes, sway bar links, and the check engine light was on due to a vapor leak) and I bought the car. I then took it in to Long Life, and Mike called me back to tell me that none of those things were actually issues, the brakes were fairly new, the links were in fine shape, and the vapor leak was something that I could fix by replacing the fuel cap. The guys at Shell quoted me $900 for all of this. Mike did let me know that my oil pan was severely rusted and it would be a good idea to get that replaced, and have my main seal done while at it as there would be access and I might as well do it while they were in there. I got it done with them and was very happy with the results. Fast forward a few months, after the brutal winter, I had to get my exhaust redone and was also hearing a noise from my front wheel area. They did a fine job, upgrading my exhaust to a thicker ply than stock and also figuring out my wheel issue (a worn down U-joint with dust/debris around the brake shoe). While I was there I noticed a leak coming from my oil pan. Before I even asked, Mike told me they would take care of it and perform the job even though it was pretty much negligible and would take them the greater part of a day to remedy. They even gave me a loaner car so I was not inconvenienced much, and fixed it for me under warranty. Mike and his team are awesome, I couldn't recommend them more. They are patient, they listen to you, and will explain exactly what the issue is, how it was likely caused and the options to fix it. They also do not BS which is rare in fields like this where the customer is often ignorant, instead saving you time and money by offering you choices in how you'd like to deal with your issues. The pricing is extremely reasonable for the high level of service and attention you get. Cannot recommend this place, I took a car there to have them check it out before buying it because they had all the service records. They said it looked good, that it just needed a muffler which I spent several hundred dollars for along with a couple other things. Leading me to believe that was it. Soon after purchasing the car I started having problems with it. It was really loud etc. I ended up taking it to two other mechanics and they told me the whole underneath of the car including the exhaust and the gas tank was rusted out. their advice was get rid of it as soon as possible. Thanks I am now into it for 3 times it's value. You would think maybe Long Life Auto might have noticed this when they had the car up on the lift or looking at their records or would've mentioned it to me before selling me an overpriced muffler and advising me it was OK to buy the car. read more

My first encounter with Long Life Auto was when my car broke down and Mike, the owner, rather than calling a tow truck, pushed my car a number of blocks to his shop. Fortunately for me, Mike turned out to be an amazing mechanic. He patiently listens to cars in order to diagnose problems that other mechanics would charge $1000 diagnostics for. Understanding some tricky issue can be as simple as going for a ride with the windows down and listening to the thunks, clonks and screes that your car is making. Mike knows cars, but he and his staff also know how to treat customers. They patiently explain the problem your car is having, and will often show you where the car needs work so you understand exactly what is being done. Ditto to what the other reviewers have said. Two more anecdotes: 1) The young woman that was working the front desk really knew what she was talking about when it came to details of the work being done, which made her much more helpful than many other front desk people at other repair shops. It's not uncommon at other shops to find someone that's disengaged and/or doesn't know a thing about car repair. 2) I don't wear my wedding ring when I lift, because I don't want to damage it. If I forget to leave it at home when I go to the gym, I'll often toss it under my driver seat. Unfortunately, my car has a crevice under there that's impossible to really look or reach into, and I accidentally tossed my ring in there. I mentioned this to the owner when I came to pick up my car for an unrelated repair, and he looked into it for me, and figured out a way to retrieve my ring. I was just asking him for advice, I didn't expect him to actually get my ring, but he was happy to do so, free of charge. read more

An honest mechanic is worth his/her weight in gold. Mike and his team are just that. I have had our 2004 Sienna and 2005 BMW 3 series serviced at Long Life for almost ten years. They are competent, honest, reasonably priced and good communicators. I always understand what is happening with my cars and what my various options are (cost, timing, safety, etc.). I trust Mike's advice completely. He doesn't recommend repairs that aren't necessary, ever. Long Life gets my highest recommendation! read more
