I originally hired James about 8 years ago when we first purchased our builder-grade home. He extended our kitchen cabinets, added crown molding, and completed additional wood trim and detail work. They did an amazing job, and James was wonderful to work with. Because of that experience, when we recently had a horrible leak that required us to replace our entire kitchen island, pantry, and flooring, along with a few upgrades I had been wanting to do, James was one of the first people I reached out to. His wife was incredibly nice, accommodating, and understanding of our situation. James came out the following Saturday, took measurements, and spent time discussing the repairs and upgrades I wanted done. Then--nothing. I was completely ghosted. If he was too busy to take on the project, I would have completely understood. If the project was too small or simply wasn't something he wanted to take on, that's okay too. But after being a returning customer and taking the time to have him come out, measure everything, and discuss the project, I feel like I at least deserved the courtesy of a response. I called James directly and left a voicemail with no response. His wife had also confirmed my email address before he came out, so there were multiple ways to simply let me know they weren't interested or available. It's really unfortunate because I reached back out specifically because of the great experience we had with James 8 years ago. I would have happily continued recommending So Cal Woodwork to family and friends. Unfortunately, after being treated this way as a returning customer, I can no longer recommend them. This guy stretched my project of initially agreed one and half months project to total 4 months, claiming he "spent a lot of time on details". Third, he will use materials you paid to his other work. As most customers don't have the knowledge of the time needed to accomplish certain tasks, you need to pay attention to find contractors who are holding work ethics and standards. Most importantly you need to find someone who has the record and cares about his reputation. This contractor has none and cares nothing.

The other cabinet places I went to didn't seem like they had the time to talk to me or care about my actual layout but Cici made a free 3D rendering for my and brought up every issue to my attention. Everything was thought out ahead of time which I really appreciate instead of finding out during installation that a drawer wouldn't be able to open because of my dishwasher handle or something. The team made everything work even when I was difficult with a specific sink I wanted they altered the design to make it work. Highly recommend them. Poor Quality, Incomplete Installation & Lack of Communication…read moreVery disappointed with the quality of the cabinets and, especially, the installation. Unfortunately, what should have been an exciting kitchen renovation has turned into a frustrating experience. The workmanship and attention to detail were far below what I would expect from a professional cabinet company. The photos speak for themselves: Cabinet doors/handles were installed unevenly, with visible differences in alignment. Cabinet interiors were left with unfinished/incomplete work, including missing shelf-pin holes needed to properly adjust the shelves. There are visible holes, damage, and rough areas inside the cabinets that should not be present in a new installation. The backsplash/stone was installed without properly accommodating the existing electrical outlets, leaving the outlets without the necessary openings to install the cover plates. Several aspects of the installation appear unfinished and require additional work to make the kitchen properly functional and presentable. The installer had extreme difficulty communicating in English, which made it very difficult to explain concerns, discuss the installation, or have issues corrected as they were identified. What is particularly frustrating is that when I brought these issues to the company's attention, instead of simply taking responsibility for completing the installation properly, I was told that some of these issues were supposedly someone else's responsibility or would require additional payment. I paid for a professional cabinet installation. I should not have to accept visibly poor workmanship, incomplete installation, or pay additional money to have basic aspects of the installation completed correctly. The pictures included with this review are not minor cosmetic complaints--they show the actual condition and quality of the work I received. I strongly recommend that anyone considering this company carefully inspect every cabinet, door, shelf, handle, outlet opening, and finished surface before making final payment. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company. Very disappointed with the workmanship, communication, and the company's handling of the issues.

Owner Jim Zeffery was personable, friendly, and always available to answer any questions we had. He and his crew changed our outdated golden oak cabinets to a gorgeous cinnamon color that blends perfectly with the existing granite countertops. Another wonderful change was adding pullout dual trash containers and also pullout shelves under the cooktop and center Island. Ed and Jose are good salesman. That's about as far as it goes. We were told the 677 sq. ft. ADU…read morewould take between 4 to 6 months. Worst case scenario 6 months. It took 2 years. Just about every part of the build needed to be addressed from the mistakes that were made. The foundation needed to be moved because they said they didn't need the surveyor to stake it because they should be very close. When the inspector came out before the pour, they were of by an inch for the 4 foot clearance. The inspector made them move it. They fell so far behind they were doing drywall before the windows were installed. Only one window was in the right location. All the ruff openings had to be moved. The soffit for the kitchen cabinets was framed wrong. Just about every faze of the build needed to be corrected. We went through 7 project managers. Luckily I have some knowledge about construction and was able to pick up these mistakes before it became a bigger problem. Having my brother in law as the architect didn't hurt either. The only thing I can say is the ADU came out nice. If you think you can deal with this type of experience, by all means go for it. Oh forgot one thing. On the day of an inspection the inspector had to be escorted by the fire department because they hit my gas line. The next day they hit it again. Instead of following the line they started where they wanted to finish and hit it again. Think carefully in your disiscion.
