Ordered: Doubles (~$4) Curry Chicken (~$14): with rice & peas and cabbage Aya's take: A&J Caribbean Taste is located in downtown Newark and offers a good variety of Caribbean dishes that are displayed on their buffet. We started with one Doubles which was honestly just average. The chickpeas were well-cooked but overall, it lacked depth and flavor. It was even lacking chutney/tamarind which I usually love and the fried flatbread wasn't crispy or as fresh. Not bad overall but nothing to write home about. The Curry Chicken was a great portion with delicious and comforting flavor but honestly, I wish we got the oxtails. After we finished, the owner said that was their bestseller. I wish he mentioned that earlier! The rice & peas and cabbage were good but lacked some seasoning. I will say it's super filling, shareable among 2 people, and a steal at $14. I haven't had doubles in YEARS, so when I saw them on this menu, I was so excited. They have their Chana (the filling for doubles) clearly marked as vegan on the menu. Great! I went in today like an hour and a half before closing to grab myself some food. Got 3 doubles, and a dozen pholourie (which is also a vegan thing), and it came to LESS than $20 (it was like $18 and change). That's a really good price for that much food. They gave me plenty of the tamarind sauce and hot sauce to go with my food, and a stack of napkins, because anyone who's eaten doubles knows that your hands will get messy rather quickly. The doubles are so good. They have coconut, the cucumber stuff, the hot pepper sauce, and the tamarind sauce. You can customise as you like, and they'll make it for you. The chana is soft without being mushy. It's perfectly cooked through. The seasoning on the chana is that exact flavour that you expect from Trinidadian chana. The bara is chewy and soft, while still having a nice texture. Not greasy at all, even though it's been deep fried. I personally prefer a touch more salt, but that's because I like everything super salty. Adding a bit of salt to my food at the table is fine. This is good for those who don't like their food super salty. Pholourie is round and fat, just like it's supposed to be, and if you prefer to heat it up at home (as I do, because this was a to go order), they'll just throw the sauces into the bag, and hand you the pholourie to heat at home. (I use an air fryer for best results. You want them to be heated through with a slight crispness on the outside, and the pillowy chewy insides). Again, not too greasy even though it's been deep fried. Also, they sell roti if you want, and chana and aloo. It's been ages since I've had good Trinidadian food back in South Florida, and this place hits all the comforting tastes that I love. read more

First time goer and I had their jerk chicken over rice and beans, and not gonna lie, it was pretty whack compared to Golden Krust. First they didnt have the option for white meat (only thighs and legs for jerk chicken), pricey ($18.84 for a thigh and leg with rice and beans) for the pretty terrible taste. I dont like to talk crap about a restaurant but this was just bad compared to other legitimate carribian/jamaican food. I doubt they let the chicken marinate or slow cooked long enough. I have to say, I'm so glad this place is here. I needed to pee, and I needed to eat. Once I saw that they have Oxtail, I knew I'd be there in the next minute or two. The place is nearly arranged, and I ordered the oxtail with rice and beans, and they offered shredded cabbage as well. I really couldn't understand a single thing the gentleman behind the counter said to me until he repeated everything, and while I felt like a thoseJackass saying "what? What? What?" over and over, he got out all some for me and pointed me towards the bathroom, which was clean and had hot water and soap. I paid about $21 for the oxtail, which is pretty reasonable at this point in time. I prefer Cuban style oxtail, as it's more salty than sweet, so this oxtail wasn't a favorite of mine. However, I could tell that if I was more accustomed to those flavors, this would be an excellent oxtail. And in the end, back in my car, I demolished it. Finished the whole plate in one sitting. The gal who rang up my food was really personable, and I don't know if she's an owner or just one of those really special employees, but I give this place 5 stars. read more

Can't believe I am just Christopher Columbusing this place. lol, little take out spot that seem to cater to the commercial /office scene downtown Newark, went there on a late Friday evening. Was feeling for some Indian vegetarian but didn't want to go to Jersey City & I remember seeing this spot pop up on yelp. Place look like it was winding down & everything in the trays looked dried out, they didn't have any saltfish to go with the bake so I got the talapia & two doubles & took them back home. I was pleasantly surprise & impressed how good they tasted. I will definitely try this place earlier in The day when the food is fresh, pretty sure it will be 5 star. read more
