    Jerk Chicken Meal(small)

We were looking for some good Jamaican food and had a feeling that Violet's would be the right place! When we arrived, there were a few other customers in the store but the line moved along pretty quickly. We each got our meals within a few minutes, one jerk chicken and one curry chicken, both served over rice & peas with cabbage on the side. We ordered smalls but still received very generous portions. I didn't expect to finish my whole plate, but the curry chicken was amazing, especially with their pepper sauce. The rice was great with the gravy on top. The cabbage was perfectly cooked. The sorrel was very nice and we also grabbed some patties to go. The service was also very friendly! As we sat and ate we saw a lot of customers coming in and out, it's def a popular option in the area, and the kitchen kept bringing out more and more food so that they didn't run out of anything.

Place was clean and service was decent. Really had a craving for some Jamaican food and this place popped up on Yelp. I had stew chicken & rice and peas, rice and peas had parboil rice , which I dislike but it was cooked really well, flavorful but not salty, the stew chicken in my opinion was mediocre & cabbage was meh. Chicken patty & coco bread might be Caribbean delight brand but it's def better than golden crust and I would buy that again.

Stopped in randomly for some lunch. The place was not packed so I able to get food to go quickly. Upon entering the staff was friendly and greeted me. There were a few places to sit however the space is more of a takeout place. The menu wasn't obviously present but the food was laid out to be seen by patrons. I opted for the curry chicken with rice and peas. I liked that they had 3 different kinds of rice to choose from. I will have to say that I was not a huge fan of the curry chicken. The sauce was a little thinner than I'm used to and lacked flavor. Also as I started to eat I noticed that some pieces of the chicken were not completely cooked all the way through. I ended up cooking it the rest of the way in a pan at home. The rice was good and so were the plantains and cabbage. I was turned off by the chicken not being done so I'm not sure I would go back.

So this was lunch this afternoon. Violets Jamaican Restaurant...I think it's the best I've had here in JC since living here and gives me Brooklyn Atlantic Avenue West Indian Day Parade family feelings!!! The Pattie's are what I'm going to dare say better than Tastee's in Jamaica and if you know then you know that's a big up to this chef at Violet's!! This is as close to the Caribbean as JC is gonna get!! And there's a lot of us here but this restaurant is my 1 right now next to Harry's Daughter then the commercial of Golden Crust. Here's the chicken, spinach and lastly beef patty...the flakiness on these patties is lighter than Tastee's and dare I say BETTER!!! Golden Crust can't hold any candle next to Violet's!!! There I said it and I'm not sorry...just telling my truth.

I would give them a zero if I could. It clearly says close at 11 pm we drove for 30 minutes through traffic trying to get here. And the cage was down I called to make sure they were opened and said we close at 9 pm and she hung up in my face, we got here at 9:36 pm So annoying bad business

The service was awesome - our server was friendly, attentive, and helped us make a few decisions in what we wanted to order. They had a special that night for a $10 burger and fries, so we ordered that, jerk chicken mac & cheese, and plantains. As an appetizer we ordered coconut shrimp. Everything was great, but I think the coconut shrimp and jerk chicken mac were the stars of the show. The plantains were cooked perfectly, I just probably could've done without the sweet glaze. The burger and fries were great, and best of all a great deal. It seems they have different deals on other days of the week too. We also ordered drinks. They have a few Caribbean classics like rum punch and pina coladas. I got the rum punch which was super strong and delicious. I will definitely return in the near future to try their classic jerk chicken dish :)

A whole moment. The Salmon Pie empanadas were addictive, the Jerk Chicken Egg Rolls had the perfect kick, the Stuffed Crab Cake was rich and satisfying, and the Sticky Spicy Sesame Wings don't sleep on those. Every single bite hit. They picked up right where they left off and somehow made it even better. If you've been waiting to go back, this is your sign. Some things are worth the wait.

Dishes…read morein general are well-flavored, though less spicy than you'd expect I was at this small Jamaican restaurant and rum bar with a smaller group than usual a while ago. The service was friendly enough, and the music was audible, but not too loud, though this was also probably because there weren't that many people there. Along with another person, we each had a cocktail while waiting, with them ordering one of their rum punches, while I went with the Island Time, I believe. The drink for $16 contained rum, which was presumably Wrey & Nephew, along with lime, and coconut water, and judging by the cocktail menu, this was likely the drink I got, as I tend to avoid cocktails with a lot of fruit juices. Whatever it was, it was balanced nicely as I could taste the rum, but there wasn't too big a kick. We got two appetizers. The first to arrive was the 'Stamp and Go' Plantain & Saltfish Fritters for $17 served with a scotch bonnet garlic aioli dipping sauce. There were plenty of fritters, and they were crispy on the outside with a soft middle. The aioli had a slight kick to it, although not as much as I expected for being made with scotch bonnets. While I liked the texture, I do wish there was more flavor from the saltfish, though I am more used to that being present during company parties, served with the more traditional ackee. The other was the very tasty $19 Jerk Goat Ribs, served with a jerk BBQ sauce. The ribs had a great texture with the meat tender, but not completely falling off the bone. There was also a lovely extra crisp on the outside, reminding me a bit of bark from BBQ. The sauce had a mild sweetness with a little kick, and the side pickles added some extra spice and texture. It was also very tasty. All of our main dishes were good as well. My favorite was probably the Sorrel Glazed Lamb Chops for $37, served with a side of our choice. The hibiscus flavor was there, but it wasn't too sweet or sour. Just like with the ribs, the meat, which consisted of four chops, was perfectly cooked. Our side choice was the festival, a fried dough that was new to our host, though not to me. It had a mild sweetness as expected, and for those who haven't had it before, you can compare it to a sweeter youtiao. There was also a pleasant side salad, which was served with the other main dishes. Also very good were the $18 Jerk Mushrooms, with sauteed portobello mushrooms served with rice and peas. The jerk flavor was what you'd expect, though with less of a kick, which was similar to the other dishes, with the mushrooms being cooked down properly while retaining some texture. The rice and peas had a nice texture with a bit of sweetness. There was also the Coconut Curry Oxtail & Spinnas for $36, consisting of braised oxtail cooked down in a coconut curry sauce with spinnas (small boiled dumplings), rice & peas. The oxtail was tender and fell off the bone, and the curry had a mild sweetness. The spinnas reminded me of mini gnocchi in terms of texture with some plumpness. This was again tasty. This might be a pricier Jamaican place, but I can't complain much at all, outside of maybe the food lacking a bit of heat. The price and lack of heat reflect the neighborhood, though, and I guess I could always ask for their hot sauce or similar. I would go back and try more things.

They had a special of curry chicken which I ordered which was delicious as well. All dishes had huge portions. Service was interesting. Our waitress was not the most attentive and we had to flag her down a number of times. The combo platters alone are around $22 each. The jerk chicken is really tasty but definitely has some heat. The portion and seasoning are very generous. It goes really well with the sweetness of the yams. My favorite curated bite is chicken skin, yams, and mac and cheese. As for the oxtail, it is very tender and very flavorful. Keep in mind that these oxtails aren't the sweet kind. They do have some spice and are savory but not sweet.
