We showed up for lunch on a Monday. They did seem a little understaffed for a lunch hour but the one woman who was waitressing was literally running and still doing a good job. One guy from behind the counter did eventually step in to help her out. Overall we had a good lunch and everyone else who was there seemed to be enjoying their food as well. We did only have sushi...hubby had the rainbow roll and maguro nigiri and I had the lemon dragon roll and hamachi roll (which was fantastic) but I'd like to try the ramen or at least a couple appetizers next time too! read more

What a fantastic new restaurant! Best miso soup north of San Francisco by far. The restaraunt has a lot of little touches to it that add to the atmosphere and overall experience that are just lovely. And the staff are all so friendly and helpful! But of course, the food is the most important part and everything I've had there is amaaaazing. The batter for their tempura items is light but tasty, which is wonderfully opposite of the all too often mostly batter experience. The sauces are done so well and they cook their meats and tofu perfectly. My only less enthusiastic feelings are that they seem to be figuring a few things out still, which isn't too surprising being that it just recently opened. They've already discontinued a few things on their menus, they have a few random American things they add to their dinners which don't flow with the rest of the meal (potato skins???), and the rice to filling ratio on their sushi is a little off. But honestly these things are super minor compared to the excellent quality of the food and staff. Definitely coming back and recommending to everyone I know! read more

Best Japanese food within 200 miles! This place is clean, and the food is amazing. The golden miso sauce is THE BEST, and the sushi is to die for! Try the bento box! Amazing!! We went there for the first time last night. Very good. The only thing we do not like is iceberg lettuce salads but the dressing made it tasty. The tempura calamari was tender, tasty and the tempura was light and crispy. We had habachi salmon and scallops both served with tasty green beans and mashed potatoes, as well as fried rice. When this place opened I was a regular customer. I walked over at my lunch hour and bought lunch. Prices are very reasonable but the last 2 times I went I was not happy with the sushi. I ordered hamachi roll and the fish was very tough and full of tendon, to the point I had to spit it out and could not eat it. I returned again weeks later and ordered the Philadelphia roll with smoked salmon (Lox) and it too was inedible and terribly tough. Half of making sushi is knowing how to cut the fish. Instead of complaining I just stop going. It is family owned and the people there are very nice but someone is making sushi and doesn't know how. read more

The food was good! But our server Nicole was absolutely terrible. It was the rudest experience I've had dining in Eureka. She didn't even give us 30 seconds to take our drink order, didn't even give me time to tell her my order. and proceeded to take our orders as if we were bothering her by dining there, I never got the drink I ordered. I have been a few times, and would really love to like this place, but alas, it is just so so. Flavorless mushy steamed gyoza, oil flavored egg roll, uninspired teriyaki sauce straight from the food service size jug, you should stick with the uninspired sushi rolls. They could really do better but I think they are playing the "why do better? What do people around here know about really good Japanese food?" Card. Missing that well built flavor of killer Japanese food. Locals will like this place though and that's all that matters. Plain pays the bills in Eureka. Ate here for the first time tonight. First impression of the service is a very good one! Very attentive and cheerful, even when they were very busy. Refills were plentiful and one of the owners checked in about 5 times. The prices are pretty standard for the cuisine, nothing jumped out at me as being "too expensive". The FOOD! Taste was impressive! The portions were generous! The Miso Soup was top notch, full of flavor and refreshing. The sushi was well rolled and proportioned. The Chicken Katsu will rival if not beat all local competition. I am pleased to give this restaurant 5 stars, if able too I would give them more. The owners obviously have experience in the industry and with the food. It seems like this place has all of the good traits of the local sushi joints without most of the downfalls. A few friends and I were craving sushi for cheap so naturally, in Humboldt that meant going to Ichiban. When we walked in we were instantly treated badly because we were teenagers. Our waitress never seated us, never gave us drinks, gave us our food cold and late and barely catered to us while she catered to everyone else. She also laughed at us which we thought was quite rude. Every time she had walked by she gave us funny looks because of our age. The food ended up not very good and most spat back out. I feel like all that food wasn't worth the amount we had paid for. Been here a few times, since I'm always on the lookout for a good sushi place. While Ichiban's only opened recently, they've definitely cemented a place in my heart. It's a small little place with a nice feel to it, beautiful paintings on the wall and fairly comfortable and aesthetic seating. The menu is your typical Japanese food fair--bento boxes, sushi rolls, and a few desserts (they make a really nice mochi). They have a fairly wide variety of sushi, from nigiri to more contemporary rolls, and overall they're well made and filling. The waitress I typically get is a determined, helpful, and personable young girl who always does her best to make you feel at home. But there's another waitress who is extremely unfriendly, so watch out for that. Aside from the occasional unfriendly waitress, though, this is a good little sushi joint with surprisingly reasonable prices. read more

The tonkotsu ramen, and mine and my date's rolls were very dissatisfying. I haven't walked out of a restaurant feeling such disappointment in a long time. I don't even know where to begin with the ramen. The broccoli was practically raw when I bit into it; it literally looked like they tossed it in at the very last second because it was forgotten? The broth tasted like your basic chicken stock; it was completely unseasoned. The noodles were even less exciting. The chicken katsu was so tough and difficult to chew, I didn't even want to finish it. I've had katsu and ramen dishes hundreds of times by now, and I've never gotten anything like this before. The sushi rolls were, at best, okay, but not the least bit memorable. The wait staff was very sweet, but they either weren't around or were very slow to help us. Pretty nice atmosphere.
