We went on a Saturday with no reservations (very risky!) and had about a 15 minute wait time, not too bad, BUT we did have to sit outside and the wind was crazy! So beware and check the weather before going and dress accordingly. It's nice on sunny days but then you have to be mindful of the UV. I appreciate our waitress getting our drinks and food out to us through the chaos of people being seated outside, then being reseated inside when room opened up, or like one table, just leaving! Their plum sake is very good, smooth and light. I also got a hot tea but that was only hot for a moment out there, the sake definitely did more to keep us warm. Their ramen bowls are now my favorite in downtown, the pork is DELICIOUS, the broth could be a drink on its own and the marinated egg has a perfectly soft yolk; it's a very pretty dish. I don't normally write reviews but this restaurant failed me in several ways. Food: tough, almost inedible calamari. I left with the worst heartburn and likely due to whatever they fried it in. Golden salmon "specialty" roll. Meh. I've had a lot better at the other locally sushi places. Service: horrible. The place was 30 per cent full. It's Humboldt so I don't expect service to be quick. But the attitude of the wait person was abominable. I felt like we were wasting their time. Like they had somewhere else to be. Mind you this was 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. We saw them once again when they slapped down the check. Then they came to get it a few minutes later and we felt hurried out the door. The bus person was seen whisking food and debris off the tables instead of wiping them down. Several tables. The waiter's attitude was hurried, impatient, and not even a "how is your meal". Rooftop Sushi easily has the best location in town--the rooftop setting is adorable and not something you see often around here. The guy who owns this restaurant owns other restaurants in Humboldt and the only two times I've had food poisoning were from both of his restaurants (Nori and Venicia) so when I started feeling a little unwell after dinner I was worried but so far so good. The wait time was long as usual. If you want to be done eating in under two hours don't plan on it. They have a very small kitchen so it takes insanely long to get any sort of food. It took almost an hour just to get seaweed salad which is already made I'm guessing. We came here on the night of graduation so it was packed but it usually takes that long to get any sort of food. I had lunch here a few days ago with My stepdaughter. It was my first time. She had been before. We opted for an outside table and then completely forgotten for about 20 mins. My stepdaughter mentioned that this was a review of her last visit. I ordered the salmon sashimi and the salmon skin salad. And a bottle of sake. I thought the food was great, very fresh and they have an interesting selection that sets them apart from other sushi places in Eureka/Arcata. I recommend the hamachi kama appetiser and the Naruto roll, their umeshu selection is lovely as well. The downside is the quality of service, which seems to have much room for improvement. When we reached the entrance to the Rooftop the host was a little unprofessional in how they did not greet us and simply asked if we have a reservation. My partner ordered a flight of plum wine, and they neglected to mention a substitution of one of the wines, as they had run out. This wasn't much bother to us as we liked the substitution. The most problematic issue is when we received our food- They had neglected to give us silverware so we had to flag down a waiter to ask for silverware and napkins. As they were busy we had to wait as our food sat in front of us. Lastly, they seemed to really want us to get going as our waiter asked if my partner was done eating when she was clearly in the middle of eating. A check was brought to us without us asking; we still wanted desert. We did not stay unusually long, we were there for a total of 1.5 hours. Overall, the food is quality and I appreciate their craft in that regard. The service is not up to par given the price tag, with us paying $155 after tax and tip- Two mains, one appetiser, two drink orders, and one desert (their yuzu cheesecake is excellent) I would like to come back with the hope that the restaurant will listen to feedback and improve their quality of service, also perhaps when they are less busy as I went on a Saturday night. I've been here a few times and the best time to go is between 12-3. During this time the food is on point and delicious, the staff is tentative, and the views are great on the balcony. Horrible service for a Monday night/not a full house by any means-no one outside - it was too cold. When food came, it was not worth coming back for.
