The Butterscotch Den in Oak Park fast became our go-to bar in Sac and is on the shortlist of places to go when friends or family come into the area. The Den embraces the 70s lounge feel and does it well! The decor with their dimly-lit, amber-hued lighting it makes for a great date night spot. Sidle up to the bar and the staff is incredibly kind and patient even on a busy night. At the bar top, the den has a daily drink cocktail special that has yet to fail me. They are also known for their freezer box martini's that you can also add a "bump" of caviar to for an additional $5 (I've done this before and it is indeed silly, but the briny burst from the caviar is an excellent addition to a gin martini. Do it!). I have not eaten dinner here beyond grabbing a couple of their hot dinner rolls with house made compote butter, but Butterscotch Den is also known for their communal grill-it-yourself experience. In the dining area there is a large grill to cook your protein of choice from the menu whether it be a steak, hot dog, or burger. More often than not when we go to Butterscotch Den, there are multiple people grilling their food. Overall, Butterscotch Den is a hidden gem in the Sacramento/East Sac area but we're doing our best to bring as many people there. So the wifey and I are day drinking our way thru Oak Park on this particular Saturday and as we were kinda walking aimlessly after a few beers at a local brewery-we ran across this simple unassuming door with the name The Butterscotch Den written across it-it's kinda crazy because I had no idea where this bar was and for sure didn't know it was in Oak Park-I couldn't have been happier as this bar has been high on my must visit list for months. When we walked in I knew I was in the perfect spot-this bar has those low lights that all the bars in the 70s and 80s had-giving off a both romantic and mysterious vibe to it-I was in love with the place from that moment on. The music that day was awesome-I heard they have live music at times but at the time of my visit they did not-they were instead playing 90s and 2000s R&B and Hip Hop-it was wonderful-one banger after another-so yeah I was vibing. Our waitress couldn't have been cooler-she was as friendly as can be-suggesting drinks that were both on and off the menu-her and I were sharing tequila stories based on our shared affinity for the Fortaleza tequila they had in stock -which is super rare and it's how I judge every bar-whether or not they have Fortaleza tequila on hand and The Butterscotch Den had multiple bottles on hand. We ended up going with a few drinks that day. -Strawberry Negroni-($13.00)-This one blew my socks off-my favorite drink in the works is a Negroni but this bar makes a Strawberry version of it and let me tell ya-it's dynamite-10/10 rating -Old Fashioned-($12.00)-This is my go-to order at most bars because it's pretty reliable and most bars can make a decent one and I'd say they make a very solid one here-8.2/10 rating -Cucumber Gimlet with Tequila-($11.00)-This drink was made with lime-sweet vermouth and tequila-it was very refreshing and went down way too easy-rating 8.4/10 -Mezcal mystery drink-($12.00)-This was a drink the bartender made that after we declared our love for the smokiness of mezcal-I wouldn't be able to ask for it again unless I got the same waitress but if your a mezcal lover like I am-this drink was top of the line-smokiness intensity off the charts-9.1/10 rating So a little about the place that I picked up during my visit-I guess they serve food-I didn't know that but after my 2nd drink I looked back and saw this entire dining area with table side grills-so I guess the customers cook their own meats and such-pretty cool concept-my visit was strictly a drinking visit so I didn't partake but it looked pretty cool. I guess they are opened most days from 4p-12am and until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. They do not have a dedicated parking lot for this bar but they are located near 34th and Broadway-so unlimited street parking is available for those who drive here. My husband and I visited Butterscotch Den for Valentine's Day for a date night and to say that we were blown away from start to finish would be an understatement! It is located in Oak Park (which I love) right near Licked and Oaxaca on Broadway. Street parking is only available so that can be an issue at times. Butterscotch Den has been on my list for a while and we decided to make a reservation for the holiday. I absolutely loved the interior - it was so cozy and was the true definition of their motto - "fine diving." They have a huge bar when you walk in that is open seating plus cozy booths throughout. They also have a stage, but they did not have live music when we were there. The whole interior was decorated for the Valentine's Day holiday and I was in love. We were given a cute booth in front of the grilling area and decided to take advantage of their Lovers Lane menu (which runs for the whole month of February)! The Lovers Lane menu consisted of 2 glasses of wine, 4 dinner rolls, 2 side salads, 2 baked potatoes, a 12oz Ribeye, steamed prawns and chocolate fondue for $100! We added on their Pretzel from their Happy Hour menu and I opted out of the wine and upgraded to their infamous Frozen Gin Martini with a Caviar bump! I actually had 2 of these martinis and tried their Two's a Pear cocktail from the Lovers Lane menu. My husband also tried their Old Fashioned and ended the night with a Fernet Branca. The entire meal was incredible - compliments to the Chef AKA my husband who cooked a mean steak! Our server was great and very attentive even though they were very busy on Saturday! She was very personable and every employee that approached our table was great at explaining how to cook each item. We took our time with our meal which was the beauty of it - cooking at our own pace and never feeling rushed. I really loved the intimacy of just slowing down and cooking our own meal - it felt very romantic especially given the day. They also have merchandise that you can purchase - we took home 2 of their branded martini glasses for just $20 and their Happy Hour is every day from 4-6pm and 10pm to close as well. Our latest trip to The Butterscotch Den was during their Miracle on Broadway holiday drink experience. We made reservations weeks in advance so we could enjoy dinner with my husband's parents on a Thursday, which is one of their Jazz nights. The whole restaurant was decked out in decorations, the walls and ceilings were covered with festive decor. Along with the decorations they had their Miracle menu of drinks that included a variety of options with different alcohol options. They all came in cute cups and most of the cups were also able to be purchased to take home. We ordered a variety of drinks that ranged from $14-$17 depending on the drink. They also had mocktails available for $12. They all had festive flavors, and the fun glasses made it even more special. We also ordered food, they had regular menu items like the steaks, veggies and portabella mushrooms, and then some special items like fondu and chili. I shared chili, portabella mushrooms, and fondue for two (with a pretzel and top sirloin). They have the chili, fondue, and pretzel cooked for you, but the veggies and meats you grill yourself on the big grill. They have tools for you to use as well as seasonings and sauces. The fun thing about grill your own experiences is that you get to cook it to your taste, so with the high quality ingredients they offer it should taste great. The items they cooked for us were delicious too- the chili was really flavorful, the pretzel was cooked well, and the fondue was flavorful and the perfect dipping sauce. The staff was so friendly and were working very hard with the Miracle crowds coming through. They did a great job of taking care of all the tables while navigating a packed restaurant and bar. The musicians were also great, they played jazz versions of holiday music and it was a nice change from the classic versions of songs you typically hear. This is one of our favorite date night spots, so I know we'll be back again soon. read more

Despite not being a big drinker, I am a sucker for holiday pop-up bars and Butterscotch Den's Miracle on Broadway is no exception. My coworkers and I stopped by for an impromptu visit on a Friday night and completely lucked out squeezing into a table for dinner -- we were informed that tables are booked out for the next several weeks, so getting in after a 15 min wait was a true holiday miracle :') I've been here before for the grill-your-own-burgers and steaks when they initially opened but I barely recognized the place with how completely transformed they were for the holidays, with festive decor, holiday cups (available for purchase) and an adorable (and delicious) selection of themed cocktails: try the Christmapolitan, Reindeer spritzers and Run Rudolph Run! You can grill your own burgers/steaks at a communal grill instead of tableside (a plus to avoid that smoky meat smell on your clothes for the rest of the day) or if you aren't in the mood to work the grill, they also have Fondue for Two ($30) and Den Beef Chili. A great opportunity to impress your date with your grilling skills, but instructions are also included for novices like me (noob tip: the buns toast much quicker than you think!) * My only gripe is that I've frequently seen inadvertent mixing between the grillware for raw vs cooked, so there could be more emphasis on signage to distinguish between the two to avoid cross contamination. Service was friendly and accommodative-- I was so incredibly appreciative of the staff for squeezing us in without a reservation and even bringing us complimentary wine spritzers! A perfect casual hang-out or date spot for dinner and drinks, complete with cozy holiday vibes (+live jazz/music on select nights). if you're coming with a big group, make sure to plan ahead and get reservations well in advance for big groups as it can be a 1-2 hour wait (there's a standing waiting area at the bar where you can get drinks but no food). Went to this little hidden gem for date night with my guy and was so pleased with our choice! We went on a Monday evening, and the service was amazing from the jump, we were greeted at the door and taken straight to a big, cozy booth that gave major romantic vibes. For a late night meal with a fun twist - cooking your own steak, we enjoy it, but it isn't a place that I'd recommend if you are seeking a gourmet steak experience. The meat cuts are ok, which is as much as you can expect at that price point. Baked potato with sour cream bacon cheese and chives for under $6. Good luck finding that elsewhere. Salad $5. Yes please. So yeah the food comes out super fast because you grill it on the communal grill in the middle of the restaurant. Tons of seasonings (ketchup mustard steak rub, steak rub (vegan), a1, bbq, tapatio, and many more). So you grill your food. All stand around the grill socializing which is such a lost thing these days. You can interact with others and your own people and overall just have a blast. Ice cream and cake for desert? Sign me up. Non alcoholic drinks? Yup they have those too. Alcoholic drinks? You betcha. Their speciality. We ordered fondue (beer cheese), steak and pretzel. Full size hot dog ($4.50 only)? Really amazing vibe here. I haven't been back since it was Arthur Henry's Supper Club. The bright sign remains! The hostess/waitress was amazing! An incredibly sweet individual who went above and beyond for our party of four. She explained the restaurant and the menu and had tailored recommendations based on our preferences. At the end of the meal, she also provided postcards we could fill out and they would stamp and ship out for us. How cute! We ended up with a mocktail that was raspberry forward, really incredible. I had a French Pearl, recommended based on the gin and the fact that I don't mind anise. We also had a bourbon cocktail and a beer. This really isn't the place for beer, smaller selection and I don't believe much is on tap. Their menu was simple but so good. This is a grilling place, where you are provided the raw materials and can cook to your liking. We especially enjoyed the burger, made from end pieces of their steaks, and the sausage which was very flavorful! The NY and ribeye were both great and the restaurant had plenty of seasonings on the side. We also ordered seasoned shrimp which were extremely good, cook time about 10 mins. The garlic bread was a little underwhelming, likely from being cooked in foil in the grill, but covered in fresh garlic! Overall, this is a very guy place, the grilling, the vibes. It was a very very busy Friday night, so I understand that it was a chaotic night for the restaurant and staff! We did not have a reservation and put our names down on the waitlist, in which they said it would be 30-60 min wait time - we were completely expecting this. The wait ended up being 2 hours long and when they finally called us, they said we could come in then and had to be out within an hour, or wait at least another 30 mins and maybe have more time. We decided to go in for the hour and that was okay with us. We got our drinks, and ordered the beer cheese fondu with the pretzel and steak. A recent visit was pure joy! Do you want something casual and festive? The Butterscotch Den seems to hit both of those sentiments, which is not that easy. It's a steakhouse that skips the pretension and goes straight for the fun. Enjoy an ice cold martini done right, a beautiful baked potato with all of the trimmings, and a steak or burger grilled the way you want it because you are the chef. While the 'cook-your-own' concept could easily feel gimmicky, the DeVere-White family pulls it off perfectly. It feels simple, satisfying and genuinely fun--especially with a few drinks among friends. Service was straight forward and attentive. The menu is slim, but what they have is a perfect complement to the red meat. The ambiance is pure 70s lounge. We had a live jazz band the night we were there, which added to the fun. This is not a place for large groups. Most of the tables max out at 4, but make a visit happen. Oh, and did I mention they have custom Freeport cake flavors for dessert.
