I have been with A.B. May for over 25 years. They stand behind their work and always put the customer first. Recently, I had an issue with the Heating/AC system that was installed 3 years ago and regularly inspected/maintained by AB May. There was some some moisture damage in the house, as a result of a maintenance issue I did not discover until it was too late. A.B. May quickly came out and made some product recommendations on how to avoid this in the future and I quickly complied with those recommendations. Additionally, they took it upon themselves to make the wall repair. This is truly 'First Class Customer Service'. I would recommend them to everyone. Really just a company ran that looks to install the cheapest equipment along with offering some of the worst warranty packages possible. Had a warranty purchased by the previous home owners and it covered basically nothing. When the one thing that was covered, the AC unit, went down, it still cost $4000 to have replaced. A week after it was replaced the contractor went out so they came out and replaced it. Here we are a year later and the contractor went out yet again, but they were unable to come out and fix it so I had to spend another $400 to have Anthony heating and cooling (great people) come out and replace it. Loved how right after a year the same junky part failed and they magically were unable to help with a 90 degree house and a pregnant wife in it. Avoid this company at all costs, unless you're selling a house and want to saddle the new owners with a cheap warranty. read more

I have been a gold warranty holder for years with AB May. The service standard has dropped to being poor. This summer I had to wait months to get an appointment for AC to my children's area of sleep and it was over 85 degrees upstairs. I thought it was a one time problem and tried to ignore as they normally are good. Their delay of maintenance caused other issues. There was no concern that their delay was causing problems and more issues to repair. I pay premium prices but get put on a lengthy waiting list of months. Today I texted, called and waited with a spraying leak inside and could not be given any idea about service times or protocol. Next week is what they wanted for me!! No clue when to expect help or if it will solve issues. Because of the delay this summer, other problems occurred due to the delay and I'm obviously concerned that the lack of attention will cause more damage in my house today. They take their draw every month but there is no longer customer preference or help if you own a warranty. So disappointing!! I've tried customer support and got a ten minute hold if that tells you anything. Could be that they are so busy that they don't care about customer satisfaction. They've added classical piano music to the hold time so they are investing in music not more technical support. read more

CAUTION - DO NOT ALLOW A.B. MAY TO PROVIDE ANY SERVICE OR EVEN A QUOTE/ ESTIMATE!! This is wordy but worth the read because this is their business model! We woke up one morning in a cold house and realized the furnace was not pumping hot air, so I called A.B. May. The "repair" guy came over and ended up charging me $140 to tell me my heat exchanger was broken and that to replace it would be $5800 and 4 months lead time or get a new furnace. Shortly after he left it started pumping hot air again. (Hot air continued to pump the next few days as we navigated companies and options, and still to this day.) A service advisor came over the next day and quoted me double what 3 other companies had quoted me for a new furnace. All other companies told me that if a heat exchanger goes out, there would be no way for hot air to blow. When asking the service advisor about this, he didn't have an answer and continued his pitch. As I became skeptical that there was a problem with the heat exchanger, I called in the Lennox certified dealer to diagnose the issue as the furnace and heat had been working perfectly outside of the Sunday morning. Upon this further diagnosis, it is determined that the heat exchanger is indeed not the problem. Furthermore, there is not an issue at all. I sat alongside the service tech while he performed every test that checked out to be a perfectly running furnace. The only thing that supports a healthier furnace was a cleaning of the flame sensor rod. I was very disappointed to hear that this was not even inspected or cleaned by A.B. May. How can this not be part of the inspection/ "service"? I find it unethical to charge someone money to come into their home, not attempt to resolve any issues, and just flat out lie in an attempt to sell the homeowner new equipment. I was never told by the A.B. May service tech that the carbon monoxide levels were at 0. The carbon monoxide was tested again and had a 0 level which I found to be a clear indication of a crack and hole-free heat exchanger. Doing research, a cracked heat exchanger will emit carbon monoxide. This service tech didn't even tell me anything about carbon monoxide levels because he knew that would blow his story of a cracked heat exchanger and he would miss out on his referral bonus or whatever compensation he received from selling a new system. Not only is this a big fat lie BUT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to not be transparent to the customer, especially with small children. In speaking with other companies, some former employees of A.B. May, their service techs are instructed to do this exact thing. If there is an older unit, to diagnose it as needing to be replaced. All that was done was be told numerous lies, take advantage of someone with a cold house in winter with young kids, pitch them 10's of thousands of dollars for no reason, and absolutely destroy their reputation by someone who once looked to them to be an honest local company based on their catchy commercial jingle. In short, don't contact A.B. May. I wouldn't be surprised if other companies have a similar model when we're talking about equipment that the common person knows nothing about. Consult numerous companies before making a big purchase and do your independent research on the diagnosis. read more

Seek elsewhere! This company is complete disorganized garbage. I had a new water heater installed and it took 8 hours to complete and then another 2 hours to process payment as I wanted to finance (I'm a broke college student) and because he didn't have anything set up he had to download and do all of his training in my house. Mind you, this was 9:15pm at this point. It was another hour before my boyfriend asked him to leave and to resolve this later. Then I had to get it inspected and it was of course done incorrectly so there was still gas emitting from the valve. So they had to come back to get it to code. After my experience they wanted to send the same technician back. I said absolutely not but dispatch insisted. So I said if you must then please send his supervisor with him. Day of, I got no time frame, no notification the technician was on their way, they just showed up to my house and with no supervisor. If you have questions there is no phone number and if you need to reach your technician there is no phone number. I get AB May wants each tech to own their own business in a way but then hire more qualified technicians that have a business degree and now how to operate a business. This is insane. read more

Folks, this is a solid operation. And they do everything, which makes it super convenient to use them. HVAC, plumbing, appliance repair, they do it all. Their service techs are all friendly and knowledgeable, and their work is warranted for 30 days. Highly recommend a Bronze plan or better if you live in an older home. A.B. May doesn't care Hang on for a long story about a formerly decent family owned business that has been ruined by new ownership. I've been a customer of A.B. May for over 20 years, and maintained a Gold Home Warranty plan for the last 10. Despite paying over $80 a month I've rarely used them, but enjoyed the peace of mind the warranty plan and offered. I've noticed over the last few years their annual " inspection " calls have become opportunities to try to sell me unneeded service and add on's. Three years ago one of their "technicians" told me the heat exchanger on my furnace was about to fail. Three years later it's still working fine. Last week I had a bathroom faucet start leaking, it was the original faucet when the house was built in 1972, so I wasn't too surprised. I called A.B. May since plumbing was covered under my Gold plan. A day later they dispatched a plumbing technician, a Mr JT White. Since they charged a $75 trip charge I also decided to have him look at a couple other minor plumbing issues. After looking at my issues Mr White informed me none of the repairs were covered under my plan. He proceeded to pull out a brochure and pointed to some fine print that said damages from hard water were not covered ! And by the way if wanted to buy one of their water softeners it would prevent future's issues. Then informed me the cost for repairs would be $1638.00 ! Over $800 for just the faucet repair. I was incensed and called A.B. May's office to complain. it fell on deaf ears. Their "advocate" sympathized with me but said the company wouldn't budge on the estimate regardless of my longstanding relationship with them. Now almost everyone in this county has hard water....and although I blindly renewed my plan without reading the fine print exclusions, I've got to question the ethics and business practices of this company. The so called "technician" was more a salesman than a plumber. Their advocate wouldn't deny these guys get a commission on the work they sell. I sent this con man on his way and contacted an ethical plumber (thanks Mr Plumber!). The total cost for the faucet replacement was $270 including the fixture. Amazingly A.B. May even sent me a text asking for a good review !! So here's your review...you lost a 20+ year customer and in my opinion tried to take advantage of a senior citizen. My point to anyone reading this is that if this is the way they treat a long time "Gold" customer....think how they'll treat you ? I used to like this company, but things have changed. After a decade of business at two different homes, I'm calling to drop our warranty tomorrow. Each hvac servicing (2 per year) is little more than an attempt to sell us a new system (at a huge markup) or additional maintenance (Evap coil cleaning, blower cleaning) that are nearly $600. Electrical work was similar, an encouragement for thousands in work for a new box. Any service call you make is unlikely to be covered, just a chance to hard-sell you things you don't need as though you do, and at a wildly above market cost. I estimate I've wasted close to two grand in the last year or two... no more. read more

If anyone is thinking of using A.B. May Heating, A/C, Plumbing & Electrical DON'T. I've has a service agreement with them for 12 years. I've spent the last three months getting the run-around from them on a repair. Have not gotten promised update calls and today I was promised a call from a supervisor. Guess what I haven't gotten! If my existing service agreement wasn't covering the promised repair I'd have dumped their ass in the trashcan where it belongs and gone with a different company and probably had my heat pump fixed three months ago. I called AB May back. Still getting the same bullshit excuses. No ETA on a repair and I doubt I will ever get a call back. read more

Instead of fixing our AC, they tried to sell us a whole new furnace and AC for 20k,but if we acted today and paid cash, they'd do it for 18k. Give me a F'n break. I knew it was a scam. Priced their unit with two other local firms and both came in at $7700. Called another AC company. He came out filled the unit w leak filler, loaded up w Freon and said we should be good through the summer. He said he wouldn't recommend the system AB May recommended because it's quality rating was well below more well know brands. Even still he said he could install their system, if we wanted for 7500. I had home coverage for over 10 years the last 2 years was terrible. They took parts out of my in wall microwave and convection, then GE couldn't understand what to do since the notes and people who AB sent bubbled around. Then, with COVID and after they hired people who couldn't even find serial numbers ( they would come and leave without doing anything) something that a quick call with my over stove top air vent hood company could have easily answered ( did to me in 10 minutes) even though they sent someone who was supposed to know his job and repair the vent motor( he couldn't even l9cate that nor the serial number spent 20 mins of clueless looking). So no they aren't the company they were pre COVID. read more

In 2007, one of the A.B May owners answered the phone and quoted me a hot water heater for $1,800 !! - back at that time I got a quality install with a competitor for $800. Last year, 2023, I went to the hardware store and installed my own for $600. They are the highest price place - the owner told me at that time, they don't go north of the river so they add cost - yeah they rip off rich people in Jackson county. I had this company out when our AC went out. They diagnosed the problem and said I needed a new evaporator coil but no worries it would be covered under the warranty. They came to fix it and I was told I would pay only the labor, $336. But then they charged $2136!! I am beyond livid. read more

The service is OK -- nothing special, but they get the job done. I do wish more effort had been made to explain exactly what they were doing, why certain parts were required, etc. However, as noted elsewhere in some reviews here, it's their pricing structure that's outrageous. Labor is not charged on an hourly basis, but on an unknown flat-rate schedule. This can result in the highest labor rates in town. For instance, my furnace installation took about 3.5 hours but cost over $5200 plus another $2700 for the furnace! That's all fine if you've got a lot of money to burn (for fuel in your new furnace), but otherwise you're much better off to comparison shop. It's very obvious that the company is much more interested in profits than honest, transparent service. Final result was a huge case of buyer's remorse. read more

How has this company been in business for decades?!?!?!? NEVER CALL A B MAY! They can't communicate. They don't stand by what they say. I had HVAC out last Friday. They charged me $700 for 20minutes worth of work that didn't last a day and a half. I called them and they said someone reach back out to me. 6:00pm came and no one called. I called back and was told "Stephen" would be calling me THAT evening. 11:00pm, no one called. I had called for a plumber a week before and told someone would reach out to set up a time. No one did except I got a phone call 30 minutes before a plumber showed up. They didn't even check to see if I was available. That isn't his fault, thos company used to be legit, not now!!!!.  The disposal can be bought at Lowes for $399 you charged $1,186 The pressure value is $95 you charged $885.  And this is with a supposed member savings of $662. We recently had to replace both AC units and heaters. The system went out during one of the hottest weeks of the summer. We have a home warranty with AB May. They sent a tech out the next day. As we suspected , the 15 year old system wasn't repairable. AB May sent Steve Anderson out that day to help us sort through this situation. He explained our options in a professional and comprehensive manner. We were comfortable with him. We chose a heat pump manufactured by Daikin. It is fabulous and well worth the higher investment. We couldn't be happier. As with most projects, there were things that required attention. Our house provided some unique challenges that were all overcome by the team at AB May. I had previously been a customer of theirs in Shawnee. We bought a new Daiken HVAC system from them, was quite happy, and had their low end service plan. Moved to south end of O.P in 2021, and have not had the need for any service. I usually do simple plumbing repairs myself, but I had spinal fusion surgery 3 months ago, and my wife told me not to. So, called AB MAY. The kitchen faucet needed a new cartridge, and the nut securing a faucet in the master bathroom needed tightening. Things I would normally do myself. Anyway, let me separate out the tech, "John", from the company. John was super nice, helpful and informative. he gave us the quotes for the service charge, tightening the nut, and, in their terms a "kitchen faucet rebuild". In my 69 year old mind, I imagined worse case, $300. I could "swallow" that, but that would be about all. The estimate was for $875. I think this is because they are trying to steer older folks to get their services plans. For $70 a month, these types of repairs would be covered. I politely told John I appreciated his visit, paid him the $89 trip charge, and said I would take care of it. I believe, in the future it probably is best to find a small plumbing outfit that is not trying to support a large corporate footprint. AB May, you should truly be ashamed of yourselves read more

Our furnace 'died' and AB May diagnosed the igniter. The technician spent a lot of effort trying to sell me the warranty, but never took the time to tell me that my furnace and the intake pipe were full of leaves and debris from squirrels getting in. In addition, in my 'history' it said this had happened before. read more

Read before you buy a home warranty... AB May's home warranty is a huge bait and switch. If you buy a home, and an appliance (or HVAC, plumbing etc) breaks, supposedly after they attempt to fix it, they'll replace it. That is the most attractive part of their marketing presentation. BUT (and it's a big "but"... like they wrote a whole section into the contract for this to avoid having to do what they claim in their marketing materials).... if they can't get the part for the appliance that breaks because it's been discontinued, they only give you money for the part, EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO FIND THE PART AND HAVE IT REPAIRED BY ANYONE ELSE (because the parts are discontinued!) and they KNOW you'll be buying a new appliance. Even if they say they'll "cover up to $2000 in repairs per service call", they won't repair it if the appliance manager (Tommy Thompson) says it isn't worth it, at his personal discretion, and makes a decision not to repair it for you. So you end up with a check for a fractioof the cost of a new one. Their business model is to sell home warranties to home buyers/sellers and collect the cash, charge 75-100 per call, then pay as LITTLE as possible when it comes to actually taking care of the homeowner, which of course, would not actually involve "issuing a credit or check in the amount of a standard, builder-grade make and model," which is marketed as part of their warranty. This is how they make money. UPDATE AS OF 11/19/19: Within hours of social media posting, husband and I have a voicemail and a Yelp response from two different members of staff. One soft and communicative, friendly from Page, daughter of the owner (a voicemail); one patronizing response from Maria on Yelp that claims a refunded service fee (we should be excited about that 75.00... since the oven has been broken for 2 MONTHS... ladies and fellas, I have four kids and we both work full time, so *that's not exciting*), as well as a "significant amount of money" for a discontinued part that they know we cannot get... rounding up, they've cut us an undeposited check for $490 for a built-in double wall oven PART. A.B. May and their Yelp responder Megan M. know that we will have to replace our double oven for roughly 1400-2000 for a baseline builder-grade appliance BECAUSE THE PART THEY NEED IS NOT AVAILABLE AND THEREFORE THEY CANNOT FIX IT. Or will not fix it, based on the appliance manager's discretion... it would probably cost them too much to rebuild the motherboard on the oven (even though they promise up to$2000 in repairs per call). So if they can't fix it, they'll replace it right? Nope. Maria M., on Yelp, says we should be happy with the $490 they wrote a check for. Except their check means we have an inoperable oven, they have discretionarily decided not to fix it, and we have to spend 1000-1500 on a new appliance, even though we have a home warranty. But hey, said Tommy the manager on the phone, "You at least got SOMETHING." Side note: this is on top of a discontinued gas range they've already "paid for the part" for (we accepted that one because we didn't know any better)). Megan M. claims they have "worked hard to make this right".... what work? Ummmmm, after a couple of weeks of calls from us, promises to have a supervisor call us: a delayed and dismissive phone call with Tommy (appliance manager) to my husband Josh, then two calls with me, they have told us "we stick by our 490$ check for the parts" (for an oven that will cost $2000). "You can just cancel your plan if you don't like it." (That plan you paid $500 for... then $600 for additional service calls). Tommy made sure he told me he checked with Mike Green (plumbing and electrical director) and Sam Posladek (COO). So FYI... this isn't a mistake. It's standard practice. read more

Not worth the money for home warranty...response rates, trained employees and need to call over and over again. I'd suggest pay as needed and get a good heating, cooling, plumbers and electricians. Called to clear clog in basement toilet, they cleared clog after pulling toilet. Apparently they didn't put it back on properly as now I have water rushing from the base all over the bathroom and my common area. Called to alert of issue as not 2 weeks have passed, they sent a tech who didn't address issue but came ready to charge us more than what we paid to clear clog. customer service says no charge since work was done less than 30 days ago just for us to call back again and they say oh no charge to come back out. NO STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My family and I recently went to AB May to get a new furnace and it looks like we will be freezing for this winter. Ever since our installation on Oct 17th it has BARELY worked. They were just at our house 2 days ago and my furnace won't cycle on right now. Then to add I have mostly tile in my home so when it gets cold it gets FREEZING. To top everything off I have a 9 month old and 2 year old who I have to constantly bundle up because AB May installs faulty furnaces. Avoid this company. They are a scam. We paid in full for something that barely works. It's also really hard to get ahold of anyone. They treat their customers like crap! I regret sooooo much going with them. WE ARE FREEZING! Please, please use your money with another company!! In response to Maria: We will see on Monday when more of your management is here. Your technician is here now and even the technician they sent out had a hard time getting ahold of someone above him to ask simple questions. I will never go to you guys again. I told you guys at an earlier call that we had a downward flow furnace which is rarely seen. Why did you not send out someone who was more experienced to come trouble shoot the problem early on? We have a main line that needs to be snaked out on a regular basis due to tree roots. I called AB May and was quoted $89 because I told the dispatcher that when we use the washer and dishwasher at the same time the drain backs up. We also get an intermittent sewer smell. When the technician arrived she said it would be $600 because there wasn't an "active" backup. We are in our '60s and the snake is too heavy for us to drag into the basement, but at this point we'll rent the $45 snake and do it ourselves. This is VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. They could have had a repeat customer every six months if they had just been fair in their pricing. read more

Use at your own risk - Kindly read. A.B. May started off as a friendly company and they do pretend to value you as a customer , but it comes at a great cost. The value in their service is all but valuable. HVAC Inspections - They send a guy out whom will just sit there on their phone and make sure it runs and charge you $69+ for it. You can do that yourself. They won't inspect anything other than the noises. At the end, they'll quote you for a new unit if the age of your Furnace/AC is greater than 10 years old. Up-Sales Tactics - A.B. May will make 'all' conditions in your home sound worse than they really are and quote prices that excruciatingly high. For example, you could have an offset in your mainline and have no cracks, leaks, or backups. For 14" deep and 100'' out, they will quote you anywhere from $8,000 to $40,000 to replace the mainline; stating that this is a major issue that needs to be fixed. Just because you have to have your line rooted, doesn't mean that the line is a constant danger to your home. Even so, if you go to a non-biased plumber, they can fix an offset for less than $1,000; a service not offered by A.B. May. My suggestion is to always get a second opinion by a local plumber. Repair/Replace Warranty - A plumber will tell you not to go with Home Depot/Lowes/ Big box stores for a new Kitchen Faucet as they are 'cheaply' made. If they swap out your faucet under warranty, it will only cover a $60 faucet that is 'worse quality' than Home Depot/Lowes, etc, and ask if you would like to spend $200+ for a nicer faucet. Bottom line, they will only replace parts that are defective in your home with the lowest quality unless you pay extra. It's not like for like. Customer Service - They will quote you on the phone how much it will cost to send someone out. Sometimes, it will end up being multiple trips and you 'should' get pre-approval for the cost of one visit. Even if that is done, they will 'not honor' it. They'll apologize and offer a credit to your account instead of a refund of the multiple charges. If you reference this review with them, they might say "angry customer, not in good standing, etc." I assure you that I've had all the necessary work done to my home, and stand by my statements as honest, and not retaliatory to a single incident. Had AB May come out to clear a clog. We ended up with sewage in our basement. The refused responsibility for the problem and referred my wife to a cleaning company. $2000 later I called to file a claim with their insurance. Got a call back from a rude supervisor who insisted it was all our fault for having a clogged drain. I filed a complaint with the BBB. Received a call from a customer support person who offered to refund our service fee plus pay $1200 for the cleaning since "they cleaned the whole basement." I clarified for her that they did not, and that the only area cleaned was the affected area. She left me with the impression they'd compensate the entire amount. A week later I received a check for 1/2 the amount we agreed to. Three weeks later we had sewage back up in our basement again. Called Anthony's who I'd recommend. He explained the AB May tech likely only pushed the clog further down the line as companies usually only carry 100' of snake, and our clean out was 125' from the city line. Another $2K later after another cleaning, I'm out over $3K due to AB May's incompetence. Left a message for the customer support person but no return call. Given other recent reviews and complaints, it looks like the company was once reputable but no longer is. I'd stay far, far away! read more

Have had decent experiences up until recently. Had them come out to clean and service my AC unit and they did a terrible job. Leaves still in it. Mulch still in the outside radiator fin things. Called them to try and resolve multiple times and they never called back. Tried to charge back on my credit card but was found in their favor due to the language they gave you sign to release them. We spent 7K after a 2K discount on a tankless water heater. First, no one ever showed up within 30-45 mins after the call. Then there was a leak once the water heater was installed and another technician had to come out and fix it. While he was at our home he said some of the things that were done were illegal and he had to fix them. Instead of putting a vent cover on the outside of the building, they left two ugly pipes sticking out. We've been waiting to have the unit registered since Friday. The install also broke my dryer vent hose and then duct taped it together. read more
