The place looked nice and clean, the staff was friendly, and it was busy for a Tuesday morning, so my guess is that if you get the right barber, this place may be really good. The reason for the 3 stars is my specific situation with a person who seemed to be pretty inexperienced. She didn't listen to my directions and screwed up my hair by cutting it way too short. It's so bad that I will be wearing a baseball cap every day for the next several weeks. Also, after the haircut she informed me that she did not take credit cards, even though the Yelp page says this barber shop does.

Very nice, respectful and my son was down to give him a try. He didn't disappoint. When you walk in don't be alarmed by the cute puppy welcoming you. Nice music playing, restrooms available, vending machine. All the barbers seems very chill, haircut was sharp! My son enjoyed his surroundings. I'm hoping Jacob will be our new barber. WHAT A GREAT FIND!!…read more I rarely trust anyone to cut my son's hair but I came on Yelp and found Proper Gents and I'm so glad I did. We booked an appointment a few days out with Jose late in the afternoon for my 4 year old and we luckily had the shop to ourselves. My son has had his hair cut before by a barber, but both Jose and the owner went out of of their way to make sure we both were comfortable - offering to put a kid-friendly show on the tv, asking if we needed water or any other refreshments and Jose offered great conversation! As a black woman in OC, it's hard to find someone good to do our hair and Jose put all my doubts at ease! My son was laughing and smiling during the whole cut (which took about an hour because we were chatting too). I appreciated that Jose was very kind, thorough and willing to go the extra mile to make sure my kiddo left looking great! While we were there the floors were being swept immediately and the place maintained a very high standard of cleanliness. They do have a restroom in the back that we didn't utilize but I appreciate them having one! The decor is awesome too, very LA/Long Beach punk with a twist of guns and roses. They had some great music playing while we were there .. think Santeria/SKA. One of Jose's regulars came in just to say hi and chat with him which just shows the level of respect his customers end up having for him! After showing photos of my son's haircut, I've had a few people reach out being interested to visit. I really appreciate how he cuts my hair and he does a good job of articulating what I'm looking for. He is very down to earth and I enjoy our chats while I get my haircut. He also does a great job with children's haircuts. My 4 year old son enjoys getting his haircut with Anthony and playing with the pool table while he waits for his haircut. I appreciate the vintage aesthetic of the barbershop and the customer service. They have water and coffee available and that's always nice during an early morning haircut on the weekends.
