This was by far the best barber experience I have had thus far. I've bounced around a couple of different shops and none of them got my haircut the way that I wanted it. It shouldn't have been hard since all I get is a high fade, maybe a beard trim every now and then. Alex did a phenomenal job with my hair cut. He asked questions as we went along, and was even able to fix some mistakes made by past barbers. My wife and family loved my look for mother's day weekend, so I'll definitely be coming back to sit in his chair again. As for the vibe and overall esthetic of Off The Top, it's actually pretty awesome. Modern lighting, blacked out walls highliting the gold accents, professional ring lights at every station, and a custom epoxy floor that impressed this veteran Floorlayer. You can tell the clientele are loyal because while I was sitting in Alex's chair, several patrons said their hellos/goodbyes to him and several other barbers as they left, giving the impression they retain a lot of customers based on their work. In the end, Off The Top Barbershop will be my new go to place to get my hair cut, and Alex will be the one to do it. You should give them, and him, a try as well.

My son has settled for his cuts but I have been quietly searching for a new barber for him. As we were leaving another store, Jacob came out and gave us a flyer. Like a blessing in disguise. Very nice, respectful and my son was down to give him a try. He didn't disappoint. When you walk in don't be alarmed by the cute puppy welcoming you. WHAT A GREAT FIND!!…read more I rarely trust anyone to cut my son's hair but I came on Yelp and found Proper Gents and I'm so glad I did. We booked an appointment a few days out with Jose late in the afternoon for my 4 year old and we luckily had the shop to ourselves. My son has had his hair cut before by a barber, but both Jose and the owner went out of of their way to make sure we both were comfortable - offering to put a kid-friendly show on the tv, asking if we needed water or any other refreshments and Jose offered great conversation! As a black woman in OC, it's hard to find someone good to do our hair and Jose put all my doubts at ease! My son was laughing and smiling during the whole cut (which took about an hour because we were chatting too). I appreciated that Jose was very kind, thorough and willing to go the extra mile to make sure my kiddo left looking great! While we were there the floors were being swept immediately and the place maintained a very high standard of cleanliness. They do have a restroom in the back that we didn't utilize but I appreciate them having one! The decor is awesome too, very LA/Long Beach punk with a twist of guns and roses. They had some great music playing while we were there .. think Santeria/SKA. One of Jose's regulars came in just to say hi and chat with him which just shows the level of respect his customers end up having for him! After showing photos of my son's haircut, I've had a few people reach out being interested to visit.
