Last week I called 3 Chimney Sweep Services. This is the only service that picked up the call. The person answering was the proprietor his name is Toby. He told me about his services. I needed a cleaning and a written inspection. He does not do repairs but I had a contractor lined up. He said he can do it. We set an appointment for Nov 20th at 2pm. This was two weeks ahead of the appointment. Today a week before the appoint he wants to cancel and make the new appointment for 9:30am. I already had a doctor appointment at 9am. When asked why he was cancelling he would give no reason other than a "Conflict" that did not concern me. He became belligerent , argumentative, and unprofessional when I want more information on this "Conflict." . When I asked him did he schedule another customer in my spot that angered him even more and rescinded the offer to come at 9:30am because he said, " I am not going to argue with you , and I was not the kind of customer he wanted to do business with. " I said " Fine , and I will make a very nice review of your behavior." When you make a contract to be at someone's home the professional thing to do is honor your contract or at least give a believable reason to bale out. . That's not asking too much. He would be just as angry as I, if he had shown up at my home and I blew him off. read more

I had a great experience with this company. The man who came out to clean and inspect our chimney (Toby) was very fast, efficient, and cleaned up all mess associated with the soot removal. He is also very honest, and inspected all aspects of the chimney from inside the house and from the roof, and said that everything looked great and there was no need for any repairs. Toby did a great job servicing the chimney. He was punctual, professional, courteous, and thorough. He was able to clean out a significant amount of debris that the previous company missed. He answered all of our questions and provided us with info about our chimney that we did not know. He also removed a piece from the original fireplace insert that should have been removed before that was preventing our chimney from working properly. He also adjusted the cable that is used to close the chimney cap for a tighter seal. This was our first time using A-Better Chimney. We heat our home primarily with a wood stove, so obviously a good chimney sweep is a must! We have complete faith in Toby at A-Better Chimney. He has been taking care of our wood stove and it pipes and pieces and parts since he started his own business in 2004. He does a GREAT job. He is prompt, professional, courteous, and he just left my living room cleaner than it was when he got here. My elderly father also hired him, and Toby could probably have sold him some extra services - nearly every service person who works for him seem to try that - but he didn't. He told him that he needed some work done to the exterior of his chimney, but that flue and chimney were fine. If you are looking for a good chimney service company, look no further. You've found it. Very unprofessional. Tried to blame water leaking through chimney repair for $450 on trees around house??? Plus we had trees cut down considerably. No trees are breaking through a concrete molding and crown. Then came unannounced in am after accusing us of not paying him since he couldn't locate our records. Don't use him...he is not reputable and doesn't stand behind work like he said!!! read more

Today Toby with "A Better Chimney" cleaned our fireplace chimney. I can't say enough good things about his work ethic but I will try! Most jobs take him 45 minutes; ours took 1.5 hours due to having never been cleaned in 46 years. We had all three stages of creosote buildup, including the shiny black tar looking stage 3. All three stages were visible from the fireplace opening. Some creosote actually dropped down two days ago while we were burning a fire! That is when I decided to search for someone to sweep our chimney who I felt we could afford and who would do a quality job. We watched the videos about how to do it. Even thou we are do-it-yourselfers and bought some of the brushes, we never got to that project. After seeing what Toby did, there is no way that we, or anybody else would have gone to the effort he did today to remove the creosote in all the hard to reach places. Toby used brushes by hand and at least 3 different brushes on a drill. I watched him use a small brush by hand around the top opening. My fireplace was getting the attention my teeth get at the dentist. Although we were initially concerned about the use of a drill powered brush, as it can be rough on the masonry, there is no way the creosote would have been removed without the drill. Having said that, I still would be suspicious of anyone else using a drill as they would likely not have the finesse Toby demonstrated in changing brushes to achieve the right pressure. There was so much creosote that dropped down from the two-story chimney that it lodged behind the damper and wouldn't let the damper fully open. Toby tried every conceivable contortion to direct his vacuum hose behind the damper which was very hard to reach. You could hear all the chunks of creosote being sucked thru the hose. At one point Toby, who is tall, climbed completely into the fireplace! The opening is only 27 inches wide by 18 inches high. When I told him he must have been a Ninja in another life, he said I was lucky to have found him because anybody else would have left the accumulation behind the damper. I am certain that is true. Regarding cleanliness: How-to videos show the need to cover the fireplace opening to prevent the dust and junk from getting in the house. The vacuum system Toby used kept the dust out of the house entirely without a cover. Even outside the filter on the vacuum didn't appear to release any dust. One of the last steps was to brush off the mesh curtain inside and out and clean the glass doors inside and out. Toby had to scrape the glass with a razor to remove the stains. The glass is now transparent and sparkles. The details I have shared could be considered Toby's trade secrets and give the competition an advantage. But I doubt Toby will lose any business. Honestly, what tradesmen have you met who would be as diligent as Toby for any price much less $125? That was the price he quoted and that was the price he charged in spite of the difficulty. How could anybody not give him a tip after all that, and yet he seemed quite surprised? And lastly, there was a crack around the top of the chimney that allowed water to enter and damage the masonry inside the chimney. Toby sealed that without any extra charge. My husband and I watched the effort he took to apply the material and smooth it out just right. Amazing finish to an amazing job! read more
