This review is based off of consult services with Clayton. I reached out for a consult regarding my Japanese Maple. Clayton took his time to look at the tree and recommend the best course of action to best prune the Japanese Maple and restore its natural shape. I asked if it was okay if I observed them whole they did the work so I could learn more about pruning and he said that was fine. We also walked around the whole yard and he agreed with me that I have two trees that sadly need to be removed due to where they were planted. I was also able to talk to him about planting more trees in my yard and he gave me good advice regarding planting and watering. Per Clayton's advice, I will be reaching out again in February 2027 so we can begin pruning the Japanese Maple. read more

Can't say enough good things about this company. I checked around for tree services but didn't get a warm fuzzy for any of them. This service was recommended by our lawn service gent who said this company is the only one he would ever use and that he has been using them for many years. Clayton was the one who came out to look at our tree situation and give us a proposal. Our tree hadn't been trimmed in a couple of decades and was in big need of attention. Clayton's knowledge and attitude gave me a good feeling about having them do the work, so we accepted their proposal and scheduled them. First encounter with Jeff was truly an experience as opposed to a "one and done" transaction. After many years, I *finally* gave my front yard redwood trees some love. After a recommendation from a trusted friend, I hired A Better Tree Service to prune my two *massive* Coastal Redwoods in my front yard, and I am SO GLAD THAT I DID. Not only did they show up on time, and were transparent about the work needing to be done, but they went so far above and beyond with regard to respecting my property and wishes. The work itself was amazing, but they were so attentive to the details of me requesting certain branches to be set aside and cut for firewood uses. Their attention to detail with regard to clean-up was fantastic. I called the owner Jeff with A Better Tree Service to assess the health of my trees and give a quote for some crown cleaning and cutting branches away from my house. Let me be the first to say - for Jeff, it's not a job, this guy genuinely loves all trees. And that's exactly the type of person you want working on your property. He is very knowledgeable and respects your time and money. For the actual work, the crew showed up on time, were wearing all the proper protective equipment, conducted a pre-job safety meeting, and executed the job professionally. They were respectful of the neighbors, cleaned up the work area and even offered to help trim some other plants in my garden which were growing a bit wild. I would not recommend for homeowners who want a well trimmed and shapely tree or bush. They told me verbatim,"We don't shape them." Biggest waste of $1,000 I've ever experienced. I've owned this house for 39 years and have trimmed my trees and bushes many times. I got no value from this job. The excuses made are mumbo jumbo. Jeff will talk your ear off for sure. I trusted him but something was off on this job. He does what he wants. Not what the customer wants then he defends himself with so much technical talk it makes your head swim. It was a pleasure to deal with this company. I contacted them because I wanted a large river birch removed from my backyard. From the man that came to give me the estimate, to the crew that came to remove the tree, everyone was nice to deal with and professional. The crew managed to completely remove the tree in less than an hour. Their planning and well-thought-out line rigging enabled them to bring down all the limbs without causing any damage to the nearby fence. They also cleaned up all the loose branches and leaves that fell off as they transported the branches and tree trunk to their wood chipper. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone in need of arboreal services. We have a HUGE sycamore tree in our backyard. The people who have trimmed it in the past haven't always done a great job, which causes it to drop branches. When it dropped a big branch that got stuck up in the tree, I knew that it was time for another trimming. We had two arborists come out and give us estimates - they were almost exactly the same price. I appreciated that Jeff clearly knows a lot about trees and was helpful in explaining what hadn't been done correctly in the past, what needed to be done now and also gave us some tips on the best watering method/schedule for our tree (all before we selected him). Michelle and Barbara in the office kept us updated on scheduling (we needed a permit due to the size of the tree and it took a bit longer than usual to get the permit related to City staffing during COVID). On the scheduled day, they called to let us know they were on their way. They checked in with neighbors if they were parked close to their driveways. The guys who came and did the work were very respectful of our property and our neighbors' property. They laid plywood on the side of our house and fence to protect it. They cleaned everything up well at the end. They didn't hack at the tree like some have done in the past. They took care to determine which branches were most likely to break and cause damage to property (ours and neighbor's). They thinned the tree overall. At the end they explained everything they had done. They wore masks whenever we were near them, which I appreciated. For payment, we just called the office at the end and provided our credit card info. I checked in with my neighbors on both sides and they had no complaints. They're licensed by the ISA and a 4/5 star business like every other company I've contacted yet their fees are significantly more. An arborist located in the Midtown/Elk Grove area charges around $75 per hour with a 2-hour minimum. This company charges $150 for 30 minutes. I have personally contacted 10+ arborist company and their fees line up around $75. Apparently, the "better service" is $300/hr better. There are other companies with the same licenses and great reviews. Do what you will with the information. read more

This was my second experience with A Better Tree Service and it won't be my last. 15 years ago I had some Monterey Cypress trees that needed some serious life saving measures and Jeff was just the Tree Doc to perform such a miracle. So fast forward to the present, throw in a different property with many trees needing love, and you guessed it, Jeff, Michelle and team to the rescue. However, when I got home after the crew left I was a bit disappointed with the mess that was left. Our large ash tree became top heavy and a very large branch fell in our neighbor's yard. We are grateful that no one was hurt nor was there any serious damage to their property. These guys are phenomenal! Every interaction I had with this company, from getting the estimate, to scheduling, to the actual tree trimming, to the payment, was exemplary. On the day we had scheduled the trimming of my two trees, the crew called on time to let me know they were on their way. Just after the call, trucks from the City of Sacramento pulled up across the street to replace a few sections of sidewalk. Sadly, this meant that A Better Tree Service wouldn't be able to work on our trees that day. Jeff came out and gave us advice on all our trees. He took a root sample of a root near the porch and told us which tree was encroaching. He talked about how to cut roots that are too close, how to trim trees, and what the problems were with the trees I had. (Too little watering by the previous owners and now me.) Jeff explained what the tree's physiology was doing. Deep watering on a slow trickle is what was needed and my grapefruit tree is recovering now. So it was worth the time and effort to know that I don't have to cut trees and there is some hope for my very large maple. read more
