We had an 18 foot dead liquid amber tree in our backyard and I called A Better Tree Service because of the amazing reviews on here and because I knew Jeff from a previous job. Jeff came out to do a free estimate and he spent an hour with me reviewing my yard going over the importance of hiring a business that can show proof of liability and insurance and reinforcing the importance of the safety of his men. He is so personable and professional!! The men showed up at 8 and finished at 1145. Due to the size of the tree and that it was dead, there was a little collateral damage to our fence which they fixed right on the spot!!!!! Wow!!!! The crew removed a huge liquid amber from my front yard. They did a wonderful job including a complete clean up after they were finished. Besides being hard workers, the crew was professional, polite and very entertaining. You can tell they enjoy working together. We met Jeffrey, their arborist, at the California State Fair this summer and we set up an appointment for him to check our 23 year old Valley Oak tree that has a number of dead small branches. He arrived on time and gave me some good advice on how to care for that tree and some others in the yard as well. As it turned out he suggested that we NOT prune the oak tree and let nature run its course as the tree and animals that live on the tree can use the dead branches and since the tree is healthy and not in distress he told me to call him back in a few years to see if something would need to be done at that time. there was no charge and I got some good information. This business never showed up for their first appointment for a simple bid. Not only that they had set up a 2 hour time frame and they still didn't bother to call and let me know what was going on! And, this appointment was set up 1 week in advance. There are other places to get better service, try them! Edit: Soon after this review was posted, the owner called and posted (see below). It's his wife/receptionist who answered my call and made the appointment. Either she failed to tell him about the appointment and didn't admit it to him, or he knew about it and put a potential more "profitable" estimate in place of mine. Another local service wanted to cut down all my trees but Jeff the certified Arborist explained how they are still in good health and I was able to save them and add value to the property. I was having a large tree removed and he was the only bid that suggested a plan for also treating the roots so they won't send up shooters later. The crew showed up on time and got the job done in less than 2 hours. They brought a tree chipper and they did a great job cleaning up after themselves! Jeff came out to look at a large eucalyptus tree in our backyard that had turned golden within a matter of weeks. Jeff assessed our tree and advised it was definitely drought stressed, and was pretty far gone. But, with his knowledge and expertise he wanted to take steps to still try and save the tree and gave us a soaker hose to help aid in the process of saving this 60+ year old eucalyptus. I believe that says a lot, and he is not just one to want to go around cutting down trees. He took the time to explain the process of tree life, which is incredible for someone so busy to take the time to do. We have 11 trees in our backyard alone, plus 3 fruit trees in the front yard. We called Jeff about a large tree in our backyard that had a good number of dead branches. Rather than recomend removal right away, he took the time to explain to us naive recent Portland OR transplants hat you actually have to water trees here in Sacramento (he was very kind, patient, and respectful). He outlined a plan over a few months to try and save the tree with a strategic watering plan to see if we couldn't get the health of the tree to return. We were not able to revive the tree, and contacted Jeff about removing it. We were already impressed with Jeff's professionalism, knowledge, and friendly manner, and the work crew was just as amazing. They were efficient and very careful to make every attempt to avoid damaging the many plants on the ground surrounding the massive tree they were tasked with removing. The tree was boxed in on two sides by electric and phone lines , as well as a large shed, and they expertly cut and lowered each branch with perfect control avoiding any damage. They promptly removed and chipped all branches. They also ground three stumps for us and gave us all the wood chips at our request for use in the garden. Since the initial job, Jeff has evaluated the health of another of our trees at no charge and gave us advice and consultation for close to an hour with recommendations for keeping the tree healthy. He even gave us advice on plants and small trees we had recently put in to our yard. During the inspection of our front yard tree, he set up a soaker hose for us (from his truck, given to us free), to help us in revitalizing our front yard tree. Jeff not only gives information, but makes you enthusiastic to learn more about your trees and garden. You may not start out caring too much about the trees in your yard, but after talking to Jeff you can't help but get a little excited about the natural processes at work in your own backyard. I have a 35+ year old fruitless mulberry tree that was in need of some TLC. Jeff came over and shared his thoughts on what was needed. I wish I could rate their actual tree service but we didn't get that far. After a very pleasant experience getting my estimate from a very knowledge person I scheduled the job. This is where the breakdown began. I do not want to recount the whole story but the person who is "in charge" of scheduling is not an empowered employee. After my appointment was moved there was no communication until I contacted them and was informed the crew would be arriving much later then originally expected. When I called a second time on the day of my appointment the arrival window was pushed forward again. On my second phone call to see when the appointment would start the scheduler was only able to offer excuses and as she was not "in charge" of the crew, the schedule or the quote. Compensation for my time was offered but it was too little too late. The reason timing of an appointment for a home service is important to me is I have to coordinate with my work in order be home to keep my dog indoors during exterior work otherwise this shifting of start time would not be as important. So half day gone with nothing to show. read more

I had this tree company out to my house 2 or 3 years ago after a great deal of looking around--- getting estimates, checking on insurance with the Dept. of Consumer Affairs, etc.. I found A Better Tree Service on Google looking for tree trimming. I needed some limbs cut to allow sun to penetrate my garden. Jeff came out and gave me a bid. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He was very willing to hand over valuable information he acquired over the years for FREE! They came out and cut, but there was still too much shade. His guys came back out, cut the tree to my liking and threw in some landscaping on my garden for a great price. That was last year. This year I needed some landscaping done. Jeff came out once again and was very helpful with sharing his knowledge. They no longer do landscaping but he referred me to someone. On the way out he noticed a dead tree in my yard had some red fungus growing on it, and he advised me to get it removed ASAP to avoid potential problems. Great customer service! We were considering purchasing a property, but noticed that some large trees didn't look so hot. I called a few other arborists about potential fees for trimming/removal and the ranges were all over the place (and rightly so since they could only go off my description). Based on the Yelp reviews and their website, I called A Better Tree Service and spoke with Michelle. She was extremely knowledgeable and understood exactly what I was looking for; she recommended that her husband simply stop by the property and take a look at the trees. I was impressed that she offered such service, especially since it wasn't a property we even owned. She assured me that he could just view the trees from the street (they were all in the front lawn). (The property was vacant, so no worries about disturbing the owners.) That SAME DAY, she called me back with his report. He could easily identify the issues and had recommendations and price options. We used this valuable knowledge in our negotiations with the seller. We didn't end up getting the property for other reasons (the trees were just the tip of a very expensive iceberg), but I would not hesitate to contact and retain A Better Tree Service. Jeff explained in great detail what needed to be done to keep the tree healthy and safe. Two days later I had an estimate that was very reasonable for the amount of work needed, One day after that Michele had us on their schedule.
