Sean is amazing. I have 3 dogs and they've all had sessions with Sean, at one point or another. He Trained our dog that we had to practically drag to go on walks.. she's so much better at walking. Sean's right , she's a spoiled diva and that's on me lol . I like that he not only works with the dogs but also with the owners because I didn't even realize I was contributing to some of the issues with one of my dogs. I do want to point out, Not all dog trainers are the same. we took our young German shepherd somewhere else and they scared him/spooked him with us in the room. Heck they scared me too. We had a home consultation with Sean and he patiently helped us through ALL of our highly-sensitive 2.5 yr old chihuahua/dachshund mix (Frida)'s issues which included: anxious tail-chasing/spinning at mealtime, rushing the door to play outside, demanding barking at us to get us to do things, not fully potty trained (still uses wee wee pads). I honestly did not expect that anyone could help us SO COMPLETELY, I would have been happy to have solved just one or two of her issues but Sean covered it ALL. Unbelievably, before Sean even left our house, Frida was a different dog. I know it sounds crazy. I honestly thought Frida was beyond help - I would not believe it if I didn't see it with my own eyes. Sean never put his hands on Frida, and he only briefly walked her on leash. In OUR CASE, the problem was US as her owners. She was responding negatively to US and how we were trying to help her. Sean taught us how to interact with her, in a way that SHE needed so that she could understand us and change her behavior. With the help of Sean, we learned that Frida responds best with non-verbal body language, a light snap of fingers, an approach with hands open -- its incredible. Sean helped us change OUR behavior and Frida's behavior changed immediately as a result. Immediately! He gave us homework to help her learn potty training and we are changing her feeding schedule to set her up for success. He showed us how to prepare for behavior trainings and the importance of a proper walk, and how to properly walk her. You have to be willing to do the work, and you have to be ok with the fact that the problem with your dog is not all on your dog - its a relationship - and we as owners have to make changes to do our part in that relationship. Obviously some of her issues like the potty training isn't going to be fixed overnight but the majority of her issues are now manageable and trainable. We are able to diffuse problem situations much more quickly and effectively. How do you put a price on this??? She's a new dog. She is more calm and we are less stressed. We feel equipped to help her in a way that actually helps her. Sean is a professional dog behaviorist. What he does for you is FAR BEYOND the typical sit/stay/down/heel dog tricks. I run a Doberman Pinscher rescue; we consulted and enrolled in Sean's services to assist with a Doberman Pinscher puppy who was with a foster family who had no experience with puppies of this breed. They were struggling as it was their first time dealing with typical unruly doberman puppy behavior (they're like baby sharks... if sharks lived on land and had no impulse control), lack of impulse, pulling, jumping, and most notably, fearfulness. Not only that, the puppy is also special needs (he is mostly blind in one eye, and the other doesn't see too well.. doesn't help with the fearfulness). Sean listened carefully and took notes of our concern; he also took the puppy's poor eyesight into consideration while coming up with a training plan. He was able to help the foster with most of the issues within one in-home training session. While Sean was there, he was also very attentive and noticed that the puppy was a bit flaky and itchy; he informed me of such, and made some food recommendations. As a rescue, I appreciate this very much, as there are a lot of dogs in our care, and sometimes its easy for us to miss details like that. In closing, we are a breed-specific rescue, and I personally own 3 personal Dobermans, two of which are behavioral. We are aware of the reality that not all trainers are equipped to deal with working breeds and even fewer are qualified to handle behavioral modification. So when we choose trainers, we are very careful. My son who has been living away from home for a few years came to visit us with his girlfriend and they have a very sweet, small dog. Their dog is a 10 pound dog and our dog is a 57 pound dog that is extremely sensitive towards other dogs. Frankly speaking, we were petrified of a confrontation between the two dogs where more than likely the larger dog could inflict a serious or fatal wound to the smaller dog even if the intention was to only give it a warning. Just the difference in size would be overwhelming. After a conversation with Sean, he juggled his schedule to make sure he could be at our home to teach us how to control the dogs, to facilitate the introduction of the dogs, and to show us how to safely separate and interact the dogs within the house to avoid any confrontation and allow us to enjoy our family. While they are not yet close friends because it'll take some more time, we are very comfortably coexisting in the home, and the dogs are not even paying attention to each other, and our family is together. Our dog had some bad manners like pulling on a leash, bolting out of the door, major anxiety when family members would leave, etc. Sean's group class helped with all of that. He is very experienced and was also one of the cheapest trainers that I found. We did his 6-week course and were excited that our dog passed her Canine Good Citizen (no extra charge to test) with him. Although our dog didn't have any "scary" behaviors, multiple other dogs in the group class did. My golden doodle is more shy/timid around other dogs. However, when the aggressive dogs attempted to get out of line, Sean had them under control in literally no time. Our Axel boy has attended 2 of the group classes so far, previously we've had issues with him being too invasive of other dogs & sometimes it has resulted in him getting injured. We've learned how to safely maneuver him to say hello hi and then move on. It's still a work in progress but we're extremely happy with the results so far. Sean also was able to get us the correct prong collar for Axel which has made a WORLD of difference. You can tell Sean is very knowledgeable with every breed, every age dog and every unique issue. I have a 5 year old Maltipoo (Daisy) and a 10 week old Bernedoodle (Cleo). I hired Sean to help make the puppy phase of Cleo more enjoyable. The second Sean entered the house, my dogs quieted down and I could tell they respected him. They obeyed him the entire session. It was amazing to watch. In one visit he showed me and my family how to deal with the normal issues puppies have like: biting, chewing on everything, potty training, etc. He taught us how to start leash training and recall training. We decided to contact A Breed Apart based on the great reviews on Yelp. We decided on the "In-home behavior consultation" after reading his service offerings. We adopted Freddie Frito Bandito from a Rescue less than a week ago and although he was having some behavior issues we also needed training! Sean came into our home and did not make eye contact, talk to or touch Frito. This allowed Frito the time to check Sean out and not feel challenged and/or fearful. He talked to us while we sat down at the table. As we talked, Sean took time to explain how dogs communicate in energy and not, of course, in words. He also explained that there are three types of dogs: serious (I forgot the other adjective), happy go lucky & sensitive. Frito is sensitive which means that he is prone to nervousness and anxiety but is also loving and gentle. He is naturally a follower and needs a pack leader. I, in particular, needed to learn how to be a pack leader. Sean showed us how to lead Frito on a leash, take back the territory of our couch and show Frito the crate was a safe and happy place for him. This all happened in our 3-1/2 hour session. For the first time, Frito slept in the crate and without incident. When we woke up he was quiet and waited patiently for us to open the crate. We did the "mental" leash training this morning as Sean showed us and he responded well. The couch is almost ours again. When Frito jumped up this morning we gently corrected him. Using bits of treats as rewards for positive behavior Frito is learning quickly. It is strange to say and it's hard for me to even believe it but Frito's energy has changed overnight - not his energy level, but his being territorial and nervous behavior. It is now our job to provide consistency so Frito can thrive. Sean's company provides follow up phone and email support included with the In-Home Behavior Consultation. Sean's knowledge, experience, compassion, demeanor and true love for all animals makes his services invaluable. I've been hesitant to outsource help for my 9month old Australian shepherd, but after trying everything I could to do it myself, I knew I needed help from a professional if I wanted to achieve my goals for my pup. I saw that Sean had phenomenal reviews so I decided to try. You guys... I was BLOWN AWAY. From the moment he arrived for the home consultation, his skills and knowledge were evident - and that could be seen by my dogs reaction to him. She has NEVER introduced herself to a stranger without jumping, and on occasion the accidental excited urination. His interaction with the dog allowed her to settle down quickly, and move on to preoccupy herself with a toy in the corner. This has NEVER happened. Having guests over has been a stressor for me because I could not control her behavior appropriately before. Over the course of the consultation, Sean educated me on the communication styles of dogs, my pup's personality type, and how to properly interact with them. He provided incredibly knowledgeable information in a way that FINALLY MADE SENSE. I feel like I'm finally able to understand and communicate with my dog properly for the first time ever, and it was so helpful to target problem behaviors with Sean and develop a game plan for training. I've implemented myself all of the practices he taught me, and when I tell you that my puppy is a completely different dog in the way she behaves, I mean it. After months and months of feeling burnt out and exhausted and drained from nothing working and having a disobedient puppy, this is the solution I had been praying for. I just needed the right tools. I'm a bit late writing this review, but Sean came to do an at-home consultation with us in March and it was an excellent experience. At the time, our then 8 month-old Golden Retriever Nala was having typical puppy behavioral issues such as leash pulling, jumping, counter-surfing, and just general over-excitement. Sean took time to understand what was going on, how we interacted with Nala, and then talk through why these behaviors were happening. He then spent plenty of time showing us different training methods and drills to correct individual behaviors. One of the most useful tools Sean introduced us to was the prong collar. I had very little knowledge about prong collars and of course was a bit wary at first, but he explained it very well and let us try it on ourselves first to show how when properly used, it would not harm our dog. We practiced loose leash walking using the prong collar and it worked instantly. The direct feedback was super effective for our dog and we've used it daily since. Walks are now so much more enjoyable and it has been a valuable tool when training other behaviors as well. I also appreciated how Sean interacted with us - my wife was a bit unfamiliar and unsure of herself when training and he explained things extremely well and encouraged her. Wow! Sean came to our home today for the In Home Consultation! Our 3 1/2 month Yellow Lab changed before our eyes! We also have a Senior Lady Mya, who is a black Lab and is 12 years young!
