I recommend you plan your own cake needs well in advance...but I found myself scrambling to put together a celebration for our parents' anniversary (We had to wait to settle everyone's schedules for this party). I'd reached out to a few vendors and only 3 were available on such short notice. I'd considered another bakery nearby, but I went with A Cake Life because Kristin was so prompt and professional in her emails and she was honest about what they could do for us with a few days' notice. I loved that she kept her focus positive...basically they could make our cake but they weren't able to deliver it so we picked it up the morning of our event. We went with a 6" and 10" semi-naked cake decorated similarly to their Rustic Green pre-designed style. It was perfect! I emailed Kristin told her I needed to pick up a cookie kit, she sent me an invoice via Venmo and told me the pick up time. I showed up at the specified pick up time and everything was ready. Simple, easy transaction. The cookie decorating kit came with 12 fresh baked sugar cookies. The shapes were cupcakes, popsicles, and donuts. Royal icing frosting, and sprinkles. It was $30, a great price for the kit. The cookies tasted delicious! The frosting was very colorful and the sprinkles were just plain fun! I recently celebrated my 5 year wedding anniversary. I bought a cake for my son's surprise 25th birthday because is friends were flying in for the party. I did so after trying their sampler pack because it was important that the cake taste as well as look good. Unfortunately, the cake was nothing like the sampler. The cake itself was beautifully presented but it simply tasted awful -- very dry, tasteless except for the heavy cream icing. We all know that batches can differ and this cake felt like it was not fresh, it was pre-baked and then someone pulled it out of the refrigerator two weeks later. I promptly emailed Kristen and asked if we could return the uneaten cake for a refund. She agreed and asked that we also bring back the flower toppings, which we did. Unfortunately, after that, she changed her mind. She emailed back saying that she tried our uneaten cake and that it was fine even though it was not. I've actually never had a business conduct itself this way -- take the cake and the flowers back and then not refund the customer? Who does that? Why not just take responsibility for a bad cake? So word to the wise - if you order, be forewarned that you're going to spend $140 min on a cake, it may not taste good, and she's not going to refund you. This place does amazing work. They were so organized. I asked for what I wanted and they were able to accommodate everything and create such a beautiful piece. After looking around town to see what's available, I wasn't satisfied in what I had wanted. My party planner, Tessa Gomes of Fred and Kate Events, came to the rescue: A Cake Life. A Cake Life opened in July 2009 by Kristin Kato, who is its owner, lead cake designer, and artist. She and her staff (Elana Geyrozaga, Communications Manager; Gina Yanigihara, Administrative Assistant; Heather Ogoshi, Lead Sugar Artist; Amber Ramirez, Lead Baker; Jessica Nelson, Lead Cake Decorator, and Liliana Hernandez, Cake Decorator) specialize in creating beautiful, elaborate, and delicious customized cakes for any occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, bridal/baby showers, corporate events, and special events. Their philosophy is "there's no life like a cake life." All cakes are custom-made; hence, they are not like a regular retail bakery with generic cakes on display to be sold. The cost is dependent on the complexity of the cake design, with 40% of the cake cost to be pre-paid and is non-refundable. As A Cake Life is in heavy demand for weddings, they are limited in the number of cakes they can provide each day, depending on their schedule of wedding cake orders. However, Kristin provided an option that they could make the cake the morning before, and that I would have to pick it up the day prior to the party date, refrigerate it on my own, and transport it on my own to the party site. A little inconvenient, but at least there was an option for me to have a Mickey Mouse cake. During the next few months, staff was especially patient with my numerous changes until I knew what I wanted in the end. Upon picking up the Mickey Mouse cake, I was amazed at the detailed decorations on the 2-tiered cake covered with a fluorescent pink fondant frosting with a handmade colorful rainbow atop the cake! They matched the colors from the invitation! I chose yellow butter cake with fresh strawberry cream filling (or strawberry shortcake, which is the most popular) for one tier, and devil's food chocolate cake with Oreo cookies 'n' cream filling (3rd most popular) for the other tier. I didn't serve this cake as it was a display cake only and instead, had a sheet cake for serving (easier to cut); the sheet cake was ordered elsewhere as A Cake Life was unable to take any more orders. We shared the Mickey Mouse cake with family, and all said that it was delicious and artfully/skillfully decorated. The cakes were moist, light, tasty, and not overly sweet. I picked up the kit the next day from their location in McCully on King Street across the Old Stadium Park, behind L&L. I called the business when I got there and they brought it out to me. The class was so much fun and exactly what I needed after being home for so long with the stay at home orders! Kristen explained everything very well, so even an inexperienced and non-artistic person like me felt comfortable. Kneading the frosting well, outlining with the frosting first, shaking the cookie to make the frosting smooth, allowing the frosting to dry for different layers, and making hearts, were all tips that I didn't know before this class! Emi and Kristen were both so patient and helped us all along. The cookie designs were so cute! The decorating was broken down in steps so it was not difficult, but it did take steady hands and some skill. It is easy yet challenging enough for both children and adults. We got our cake from A Cake Life for our wedding last year. We met with Kristin in June 2018 and had a cake tasting, and we decided on a 3-tier cake with different flavors of each. She drew us up a design, and we left happy with our choices. After some discussions, my husband and I decided to go with a smaller cake since we weren't sure that we would really need 3 tiers of cake. Kristin kindly downsized our cake and allowed us to use the extra money that we had paid for the bigger cake towards desserts that could be used for our bridal shower. picked up a cute cookie kit for $30 and decorated cookies with my neighbor. It was a fun couple of hours. We had lunch as we waited for the frosting to set. You order via email or phone and pay via venmo. They say you can find everything you need to know and order via their Instagram but it was confusing when you search acakelife there are apparently many....so is this a millennial thing, because I never heard the phrase a cake life before. Maybe there are a brownie life and a cheetos life out there too... Anyhow I give 4 stars because it was a bit confusing to find them online and get my order placed and they sound a bit busy on the phone...a little more patience and empathy would go a long way on the phone since you can't just show up at the bakery. Once I got my order in, it was also a bit hard to find them, google.maps insisted I was right there...but I included a shot from my car in the parking lot, it's hard to spot them if you dont know. So I'm helping y'all out now by saying you should turn in immediately at L&L bbq and they are between L&L and the Aloha Vietnam storefronts. If you miss, as I did, and pull into the adjacent parking lot, there is another bakery that is not the right place and the women there were very grumpy about being asked. But, once I got there, no problems at all, they knew exactly what my order was, it was ready, and when I got home the box was compact full with promise. My neighbor and I unpacked the box and began by tentatively filling an outline. You definitely get better and more creative with each cookie and there is plenty to fully decorate the cookies. The set comes with 12, of a lollipop, donut and cupcake shapes. We had orange, blue pink and white Royal icing and 3 different types of sprinkles. I think it's a great idea, and while $30 sounds like a lot for unfinished cookies, it is really less than $3 a cookie and you dont have any mess or fuss in baking or prepping the icing. You could even decorate more than the 12, so next time I may supplement by buying some extra cookies to decorate. They also offer a make a cookie lei kit and other kits besides their fabulous cake designs. read more

My husband and I now live in California but are both born and raised on Oahu and our wedding plans had us doing our ceremony in LA and our reception in Honolulu. Therefore I was planning the reception remotely and did not get the chance to sample any cakes! I browsed through yelp reviews and company websites and found A Cake Life! I loved their sample photos as I was going for somewhat of a rustic feel but also wanted to make sure the cake tasted great and could support our custom cake topper. Our dogs are our babies and we got married on Lunar New Year which happened to be year of the dog too! I corresponded with the folks at A Cake Life about flavors, size, pricing, colors, and they assured me that the cake topper would fit and would be well supported by the top layer. They arrived on time and quickly and easily set up the cake! It was perfect! It was also definitely the best photo spot for our guests and went so well with our other decorations! We already had 4 desserts included in or reception buffet so I was worried people wouldn't eat our cake but it was almost gone by the end! We had the strawberry guava flavors throughout and it was so yummy! My mom took just a few slices home as that was all that's left and I'm sure she's already finished eating it! 5 stars for service, quality, and peace of mind when it comes to planning a wedding reception from the mainland! Oh and also at the last minute I found that my best friend knows the owners and that made me even happier as she was so glad we went with this company too as she use to be in wedding planning! As for the photos, the one without the topper was the concept I was going for but our reception was small so we needed a cake just enough to feed about 60-75 people. Ours is the one with the topper! For my husband's 50th birthday, I decided to splurge and I spent $708.90 for 4 dozen cupcakes (2 dozen decorated and 2 dozen of their regular cupcakes). That comes to nearly $15 per cupcakes which I was willing to spend on good quality, special cupcakes...which is definitely not what I got. The cupcakes that we got looked like they were decorated by an amateur and not at all like the pictures we provided or the pictures they post on social media and their website. On top of that, all the cupcakes were EXTREMELY DRY and not at all the quality of the $20 sample we purchased. Honestly, I can make a better cupcake! I contacted the company to let them know how bad the cupcakes were and all they could offer me was 10% off with a comment that no one else complained that day....what a huge disappointment. And this was after they assured me that their cupcakes would be as moist as their cakes and the samples we purchased. I'd give A Cake Life zero stars if I could for quality, design and customer response to our honest feedback. Even the guests (some kids) were so disappointed that the cupcakes were so dry and some adults said it seemed like they were possibly 1-2 days old. Needless to say, we dumped more than half of the cupcakes in the trash the next morning after contacting the company. Even they didn't want their dry cupcakes back. I'm never coming here again. I am currently assisting my sister with her wedding planning. After hunting around for a cake vendor, we found A Cake Life listed on The Knot as one of the top wedding cake vendors in Hawaii. After reading all these wonderful yelp reviews, my sister was sold. I sent in the email and Kristin responded. Everything seemed great, she was helpful and also gave us tips. Since this is a rather large wedding, we were up front with the guest size. Not that it should matter, at least that's what I thought, we are a polynesian family. Compared to non-polynesian families, this is a huge wedding with just immediate family members. If there was a problem, we weren't made aware so we kept moving forward. My sister picked her design, things still going great. Now, considering the size of the guest list, we were already prepared to dish out some serious money...still no problem. I emailed twice about the cost to verify, mainly because what we were being quoted with was not what was advertised on the link that Kristin emailed. Both emails, she sent me the same link for their pricing. Then we get the invoice, naturally the cake is near $1500 which is what was budgeted (again, it's a huge guest list). Looking through the invoice, noticed extra charges we weren't made aware of prior but ok, that's what the bride wanted-fine. It was for a design and then delivery. On their website, the $200 range is for the west side and North shore area. The venue is in Waipio. My sister emailed questioning that charge and we were emailed the webiste charges, again. Due to lack of communication, my sister started to feel like she was being pressured to sign the contract that was sent with invoice because every time we had questions, we were sent the website link. Told her, don't sign anything until you try the cake! I'M SO GLAD SHE LISTENED! This is where things go bad and quick. We asked for a cake testing, they're still on covid restrictions, which is fine. I get it, not everyone feels comfortable with the restrictions being lifted. You have to purchase their bento to taste the cake. I buy the $28 bento box. I just want this to be a nice experience for my sister. After purchasing the bento box online, I got a receipt that says "PICK UP TIME AT 9AM". We live in Ewa and I am a mom, so I had to drop my kid to school and zoom straight to town. Traffic was light so I arrived at 8:45am. Walked up to the door and there is a sign that says "DO NOT ENTER! PLEASE TEXT 808-542-0131 WITH YOUR FULL NAME AND WE WILL BRING THE ORDER OUT TO YOU" I texted to let them know I was early. I had my 4 year old nephew with me so we stood outside because I'm thinking we'll get the bento box at 9am...like it says on the receipt I was emailed and the sign. 9am-still waiting outside. 9:10am-I text again. No response. 9:15am-texting my sis to email that I'm waiting outside because no one is answering the texts. 9:30am-still waiting, no text. Now I'm getting irritated, its been 45 minutes. I walk up to the side door and start knocking. This little lady opens the door and I told her "I'm here for a 9am pick up, I've been waiting almost an hour!" I called my sister and told her "don't use this company. If they're late for me to pick up a bento box that I paid for, imagine what will happen on the day of the wedding!" Another lady comes running out and says that she had to reset the phone and they didn't get the texts. My thing is, YOU said to pick up at 9am, NOT ME! You should've been prepared knowing that someone will be there at 9am to pick up a bento box! In my frustrations with the horrible customer service, I made a social media post about my experience WITHOUT NAMING THE COMPANY! A few people DM'd asking the name of the company. To my surprise, so many other brides had the exact same experience! Funny, they were all polynesian too! If the issue was that you could are not able to make that amount of cake due to staffing issues or that you just didn't want too...then say so! Don't waste anyone's time! That's what pissed me off, the time that was wasted! I'm glad it was me experiencing this and NOT the bride! Fast forward to the cake testing... I ordered: Strawberries N' Cream, Red Velvet, Marble and Raspberry, I Heart Chocolate, Lilikoi and Vanilla. The samples were awful. I don't know what that was that I purchased but it wasn't cake. The Red Velvet, Lilikoi and Choclate were so dry, there was an awful after taste. I'm offended that I had to pay to try whatever that was. I feel like I should get a refund. Thankfully, my sister found another vendor through another dissatisfied customer from A Cake Life. Do better, you're in a business that cater's to a very important moment in someones life. This was an awful experience, I would never recommend this place! I'm wondering if TheKnot actually tried the samples because I'm confused on how A Cake Life landed a top spot! read more

It's been a year since our wedding and I forgot to write this review until now. Kristin and her staff are cake artists and their flavors taste so much better than all of the other cakes I have had at weddings (and we have been to many since we are the last of everyone we know to get married). She made three cakes for our wedding, all of which were showstopping, but the one everyone raved about was the groom's cake. My husband wanted an anatomical heart cake. We met with her and gave her our ideas and she had us pick multiple pictures and took notes on what we wanted. We later found out that her staff made 3D models from the pics we gave them to be as accurate as possible - they really went above and beyond. My husband and our guests that are medical doctors (including cardiologists) were stunned with how anatomically accurate it was. So accurate that we had leftover of it and our driver told us we couldn't put an animal heart in his car, haha! We had to explain that it was cake. Our cake flavors were so good as well. We did the tasting and it was hard to pick, so we were glad we got five flavors total - orange dreamsicle, lilikoi, guava, coconut pineapple, and strawberries and cream with actual strawberries inside. Everyone loved the flavors. They set everything up so nicely day of and were also so accommodating with our pandemic rescheduling (twice!) I highly recommend A Cake Life - you won't regret it!
