We went for breakfast: the pancakes were good, but the American Breakfast wasn't, and the potatoes were undercooked with a flavor that was almost too earthy. The pastries were just okay; we tried a few cake slices that were fine but unremarkable. The cinnamon roll was dry and hard, the malasadas were forgettable, and the haupia-filled malasada was surprisingly tart. It's possible some ingredients were locally sourced and just unfamiliar to our mainland palates, or maybe we simply caught them on an off day. We have been coming here for years; food is always good, not great. We came on a Thursday morning around 9:30 am; and figured we wouldn't have to wait, oh, were we wrong, there were 10 people in front of us. The wait actually wasn't that bad, maybe 15 minutes. It is a typically diner, counter seatings only. The service wasn't great, but not rude; they take your order and they bring you the food; no pleasantries or small talks, I guess they need to turn the tables (counter seats) quickly. We had the loco moco with fried rice and hamburger steak with multi-grain rice and toss salad; they didn't offer a choice of dressing, but the default asian dressing was delicious. The food was good with very big portions; I had a hard time finishing my loco moco. They served it with lots of yummy brown gravy, the way it should be. My wife enjoyed her hamburger steak as well. Yesterday I was surprised with really good news, so although I had been trying to be good diet-wise, I felt like splurging and indulging a bit. This morning I waited outside Liliha Bakery for its 6 am opening, then went in and asked the woman at the counter if there were any custard pies. She said she would ask. When she came back, she said yes, but they were still hot. I told her I would take one, and that I also wanted a few other items. I ordered two each of the Pepperoni Pizza Rolls, the Hot Dog Rolls, and the Poi Mochi Donuts. I want to add that the young lady was really nice, unguarded, which I like. It was easy to talk and joke with her. I took the boxes to the office and had some of everything (I "indulged"). There are five locations in Honolulu, but if you want the true old-school Liliha experience, this is the definitive place to go. Even though there were locations closer to us, Jamie W and I took the local bus, the 13, for well over a half-hour to get to Kalihi where it sits on Kuakini Street. Here it was pretty busy between the bakery and the long diner counter. We were surprised there were no tables and chairs, but we managed to sidle into two open spots in front of the grill. The menu was classic diner fare with the typical Hawaiian signature dishes. But first, we were served their house bread rolls, grilled, soaked in melted butter, and accompanied by a florescent strawberry syrup (Photo 10). They were devoured quickly. For our meal, we succumbed to local favorites. Jamie ordered the $18.95 Mahi Mahi & Eggs, a hearty portion with three grilled filets topped with scrambled eggs with mixed greens and rice (Photo 8). Flattened for easy grilling, the fish was tasty and more tender than we expected. I went even more classic and ordered the $17.95 Loco Moco with Garlic Fried Rice, a large hamburger patty grilled and topped with a runny fried egg. It was laid on top of the rice and drenched in country-style gravy (Photo 9). It worked for me. Our veteran server had an edge, but she eventually warmed up to us. Meanwhile regulars were rotating the counter like clockwork. Our visit wasn't over though. Various YouTube vloggers encouraged a perusal of the bakery, in particular, the $3.19 Coco Puffs, chocolate-filled cream puffs topped with Chantilly frosting. We bought two and added the $3.59 Green Tea version, the $3.19 regular cream puff with powdered sugar, and the $3.19 Chocolate Cream Puff (Photo 7). Hey, we were on vacation. We waked over to Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden and devoured them easily. Gotten more expensive in the past few years but what can you do. Classic bakery, famous for a reason! I ALWAYS get the poi doughnuts, SOOOO yummy. But i always forget to take pictures of them. Service is very quick and efficient. Workers are usually very kind as well! Glazed and twisted doughnuts are also basic but still good. First of all with how busy the Liliha location is I wasn't thinking about parking since the lot is quite small but with great timing I had no issues and went in happy and filled with hope as everything went well so far...sadly to no surprise I didn't find what I needed but did pivot since they still have so much to offer from grab items like butter mochi and decorated cookies along with display case filled with various baked goods I wasn't leaving with some treats. When I went we decided to get the coco puff as well as the loco moco and share. And hands down I would recommend the coco puff over the loco moco. The pastry was flakey and light with just the right amount of rich cocoa deliciousness filled inside. The loco moco on the other hand while solid lacked depth in flavor and felt a little bland. Wonderful Saturday morning breakfast at the Liliha Bakery counter where we indulged in several of their specialties. We fortunately only waited for about 5 minutes and nestled in among the rest of the breakfast patrons. After ordering, we enjoyed their toasted buttered rolls with the syrupy sweet dipping sauce. Next came out the loco moco which included two beautifully charred meaty beef patties topped with correctly cooked over easy eggs and a rich brown gravy over hot fluffy rice. An OG loco moco in the best way! Even though it was a large portion, we also grabbed a side of potato Mac salad which was creamy and dill-flavored -- not necessarily a traditional version but tasty for sure. We also dove into a plate of Hawaiian sweet bread French toast -- so succulent and topped with a stick of whipped butter and plenty of syrup. Total island sweetness on a plate. And we couldn't pass up on getting a side of their corned beef hash which has a crispy top off of their flattop grill and lots of beefy, salty goodness. This Liliha Bakery is a nice old school diner/bakery. You can either order the pastries at the bakery section or grab a seat at the diner section. The seats are all bar seating facing the kitchen. Its well maintained and very clean. i love watching what goes on in the kitchen. By observation I saw that their coffees were freshly ground from beans. They were using Lion coffee brand for both caf and decaf. I believe it was the premium gold flavor, 10% kona beans. The coffee tasted strong. The grill their burger patties on a grill and get that nice charbroiled sear on it. I could appreciate that flavor on the loco moco. Although the bakery is no longer owned by the original owners - (Roy & Koo Takakuwa were the original owners, but they sold the business to Peter Kim in 2008). Liliha Bakery remains the same with great food & AWESOME bakery items like their FAMOUS Coco Puffs! Mr. Kim has certainly "modernized" the original Liliha Bakery location, and has even expanded his bakery business with new locations like in - Waikiki, Ala Moana Shopping Center, Nimitz, & Pearl Highlands. Recently I had to do a medical procedure at Saint Francis Hospital, and after my friend picked me up, I told him that I like buy him breakfast at Liliha Bakery. Took The Bus away from Waikiki Beach to eat at this location, hoping it would be less crowded with tourists. There's just a counter with stools, but we were able to find two available.
